Could someone explain the practical implications, for gamers and developers and such?

Oh great, yet another language to learn!

Seriously though this is great news, can't wait till 2.0 comes out. Soon we'll be doing everything on the graphics board!

DaJuice: Implications are prettyness for gamers, ease and range of possibilities for creating prettiness for developers (think HL2 trailer).

Hurray, Finally all of the ARB's and the Shading language in full force. While we have had some of it for a while it will be nice to get a better handle to its power. But I still can't wait for 2.0.
But in hand with this is the very long awaited alpha release of OpenML, the new Open Media Language!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now people can use shading languages that are not vendor specific. SGI also announced that they will be creating bindings between java and openGL, so now people wont have to own an nvidia or ati graphics card to take FULL advantage of high level shading languages. Looks like theyre targetting mobile devices and such.

Thank you. :)

will the geforce fx and quadro fx support this?

07 July 2003, 07:40 AM
They just announced it, so I think it'll take a while before 1.5 spec cards come out.

07 July 2003, 02:18 PM
I don't think it will be as long as you think. The spec sheets and details for 2.0 have been out for over a year. I would not be suprised if must manufactorers di not already have things set and pretty much ready to go for v1.5 as they will for v2.0. Graphic card manu's usually do really good at keeping up with these things.

This quote from the press release lets you no how soon we will have hardware for this new specification.
"OpenGL 1.5 enables techniques that make rendering faster and will be supported by graphics card vendors in products being released later this year."

This is great news ,I for one am way excited by this news.
The future looks bright and colourful.
