View Full Version : Deforming Legs, I need help

07 July 2003, 08:16 AM
I've been trying hard to get nice leg deformations without much success.

Right now my current set up is a weight mapped character using endomorphs for the elbows, shoulders and knees. I have very ugly results for the thigh leg joints. I've tried endomorphs as well as weight mapping.

May I ask for some help if anybody can spot what i'm doing wrong from these four images?

The left leg has been set up with endomorphs. These work fine until you move the foot left and right.

The right leg has been set up with weight maps and its just plain ugly.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Try out the plugin Weight Map Blur to smooth out transition areas.

You mgiht also try weight normalization.

It looks like your transition between your weighted zones is too severe. Try blending the values out a bit more so that there's less of a jump from 100% to 0%. You could also try setting up a few holder bones to preserve volume in areas like the buttocks and the backs of the knees. But I would start out with smoothing out the weight maps and then tweak from there. :)

lfgabel -- Thanks! This plugin is helping a lot! It still looks unsightly when the legs are moved outward and up, but I'll try what triple g says -- adding a few more bones down there.

I don't quite get why a few more bones is a good idea though, I'm useing weight maps, so as long as the weight map is applied correctly, it should be ok right? more bones is only for a non-weight mapped rig isnt it?

Anyway, more on this soon once I play with the rig some more!
