Any Robotech fans here?

05 May 2002, 03:17 AM
Call me square but who or what are Robotech?

05 May 2002, 03:30 AM
Ahh Robotech.... Yea i like it. I remember watching it on TV in the mid 80s i think.

dzogchen, Robotech was an anime TV series. Set in the future, humans have planes that can turn into robots and the aliens want to kill all the humans... yadda yadda yadda it was a lot of fun. ;)

05 May 2002, 05:01 AM
I might even have one or two of the ships laying around somewhere. (the toys from the 80's) :)

05 May 2002, 05:41 AM
huge fan...
that, and battle of the planets were amazing... i used to get up at like 6:30 or something in the morning, before school and watch it. unbelievable.

05 May 2002, 08:06 AM
Oh yeah!!
I still talk about that show sometimes.
I actually just bought a couple of the CD's!
Sad to say, I've grown old I think. The battles don't seem as galactic as they once did.

05 May 2002, 09:13 AM
Oh yeah!!
I love Robotech, and the whole MACROSS saga!

Mike, Isaw on your webside some Invid pics, they look great!

That's give me an idea, all Macross and robotech fans, why not posting some pics you did?

Facial Deluxe
05 May 2002, 09:22 PM
Yeah why ?

Mike RB
05 May 2002, 09:01 PM
because I'm modeling one of the little troops from it. :)

05 May 2002, 02:55 PM
Hey Mike, great, will you make the transforming Cyclone motocycle too?

05 May 2002, 04:03 PM
Ok, ok , forget about my last question, I just saw your WIP thread, hope we could see the cyclone soon!
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Mike RB
05 May 2002, 04:30 PM
do you happen to have any good reference drawings of it? Front side? All i can find on Mr. Internet is 3/4 action shots

05 May 2002, 08:16 AM
Woooooow! Awesome!
It reminds me of the wonderful toy that I had when I was a little boy!:applause:
The legs are fantastic!

I will search for good ref pics, see ya later.

Mike RB
05 May 2002, 03:05 PM
belt and legs pretty much done....

05 May 2002, 05:56 PM
I never had the pleasure of enjoying Robotech as a kid. Not that I'm not old enough :scream: I guess it was just a fluke that they never got it on whatever I was whatching.
Looking at your model does seem to bring back memories though. And I must admit I still love that clunky kind of armour/suit.
So when is the animated feature finished then?:bounce:

05 May 2002, 08:07 PM
Damn Mike, if I ever have enough money to build my own house I would want you to design it for me. Nothing short of Wicked!!

Is this related to the parachute?

Later Ben

Mike RB
05 May 2002, 06:22 AM
Sorry Ben, i didn't design it, its based off of the model sheets for the 80's cartoon.

Model Sheet:

helmet still not done....

And maybe its related to the parachute......

I suggest you write MRB, instead of MB on the shoes...;)
Appart from that, this is coming very well... As usual...

Oh, one last thing, Lukasz Pazur seems to have trouble with MM2 (sdplug mail list), perhaps you'll have an idea...

05 May 2002, 08:09 AM
Good modeling,
could we see a wireframe plz?

Thanks! I added some trinkets:

08 August 2002, 05:46 AM
celshading? :)

(i dont like this series at all, but then i dislike most anime from the eighties. im a pure he-man and turtles guy myself. still, nowadays there's just too much good anime) :)

Mike RB
08 August 2002, 06:56 PM
I finnally got started on his transformable motorbike. For now its just roughed in with primitives to get the right proportions and volume.

08 August 2002, 10:17 PM
-----> flashback <------

great job !!!

keep it comin'

08 August 2002, 01:28 AM
Looking great! I love the Macross series and Robotech and Mospeada!

Can't wait to see it finished! :)

08 August 2002, 03:18 AM
That is looking great! I have always loved techie anime. The attention to detail is amazing. You have captured that feeling. On the edge of my seat waiting for more.

Mike RB
08 August 2002, 04:43 PM
well, heres more! :)

08 August 2002, 10:35 PM

You know Mike, sometimes I think we've chosen LW rather because of who we are, than for what it really is as a great tool. It seems like a chicken egg dilemma. Robotech was and still is one of my all time favorites. And It's amazing to see how many of us waveys have the same passion for the series. I still keep some tapes for those nostalgic unwinding sessions. It's good to have a window on your younger days. Love those Invid models.:applause:

Keep it up,:wavey:

08 August 2002, 11:25 PM
Ahhh yes 1988. My introdction to the entire series all at once.
man I may be getting lder but the younger days was kickass or what. Growing up from 2d to 3d.

Oh Slick Models You have, Mike.

Mike RB
08 August 2002, 03:43 AM
Yeah, Robotech rules, they are apperently working on a new series, still 2d, picks up where the last one finished... So that may be interesting.

For the little animation I want to do I don't need many assets, just the guys bike, one spaceship, a few ground sets, one interior of the spaceship..... But we're so busy at work that finding time for personal stuff is difficult. Piece by piece I get little bits finished....

08 August 2002, 12:51 PM
Mike, what ever happens in the animation, just make sure a whale jumps up in the end and saves the day! :)

Mike RB
08 August 2002, 04:35 AM
nah, I don't think so, no Moon Warriors ending here. :)

08 August 2002, 04:47 AM
Great stuff! But, you do realize we're all expecting some great IK rigs that will complement the great modeling. Just a standard that you've set for yourself now :p

Neat stuff, I'm looking forward to future updates!

Mike RB
08 August 2002, 08:26 AM

Size comparison

of course I have to rig them.... I'm as eager to see them moving as you are. :)

08 August 2002, 03:00 PM
Great Job!

08 August 2002, 08:55 PM
Great stuff Mike.

BTW, what are those last things u made?

08 August 2002, 09:28 PM
Sweet images man........I love Robotech. Still ranks as one of my favorite animes. I just started collecting the series on DVD.

Now I am inspired to go build some of them myself.

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 04:07 PM
what do you guys think of the direction im taking the texturing so far?

Michael JL
09 September 2002, 04:25 PM
Looking great Michael !
My only suggestion would be to darken the texture, and increase the contrast between the colors in the camo. While this would not be as realistic perhaps, I think it might look cooler.

Facial Deluxe
09 September 2002, 04:26 PM
The camo is so perfect that I can't see his head:cool:

09 September 2002, 05:33 PM
Really really cool.

Love RoboTech and even played the game.

Makes me want to take a stab at it -- oh yeah, time. Free time.

What the heck is free time???

Facial Deluxe
09 September 2002, 05:43 PM
DigitalDeuce, FreeTime was a fastfood restaurant (McDo like), but it doesn't exist anymore;)

09 September 2002, 05:55 PM
Ahhhh -- that's right.

Thanks !!

09 September 2002, 11:25 PM

the texture looks great. Can I ask what method did you use to map the texture onto it? If you used UV map, did you have stretch problems when mapping it? Or not? thanks

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 02:25 AM
heh, for exactly that reason its all procedural so far. :)

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 07:24 AM
heres is a quick update.

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 09:33 AM

09 September 2002, 12:46 PM

Handpainted or procedural grunge?

Either way, very cool. Now, finish his Motorcycle!!
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 01:21 PM
The only actual bitmap so far is the number on his chest

09 September 2002, 02:13 PM
That is way cool. I love procedurals.

You should enter the Procedural Competetion of NewTek's.

Are you?

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 09:36 PM
Nope. I don't find the prize too interesting. And If I have any free time to spend on LW it will be my personal project. Some of the work people are doing with weightmaps are great though. Good stuff..

09 September 2002, 09:40 PM
Mike, that's very nice!

Make him move around and destroy stuff!!

09 September 2002, 09:43 PM
That's cool Mike.

Really is lookin good.

Battle scene -- we needs a battle scene!!

09 September 2002, 10:00 PM
I'll have to come up with a contest that Mike is interested in....Mike is a LW guru....

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 10:08 PM
Thanks, but I don't think so, I just have a very visible web presence. :) If you want to chat about promotional ideas or contest stuff drop me an email:

09 September 2002, 10:11 PM

Sure sign of a master.

:xtreme: :xtreme:

09 September 2002, 10:21 AM
i like macross.
it's affected all of my sci fi space concepts of what space travel might be like.

Huge ships, massive space fleets

there is another series that you may like as well if you like macross.

Legend of galactic heros.

this is 120 episodes or so, and a few ova's
and it's amazing fleet battles.

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 03:43 PM
added some chipped paint speculars.

Macross was cool too, I just liked the style from the New Gen / Mosepeda series.

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 04:22 AM
starting to rig....... still lots of problems....

09 September 2002, 04:50 AM
wayyy cool!

:applause: :applause:

What kind of setup issues? Just joints and such? Using weight maps at all? Sockmonkey?

09 September 2002, 05:02 AM
Er, when runin' the right hand swing with the rising of the left leg. :scream:

cool muspeada!:bounce:

09 September 2002, 05:04 AM
good eye -- I figure that he was posing it to look at problem areas in extreme poses. I'll do that alot -- so as to only have to look at one side at a time.

09 September 2002, 12:50 PM
So when do we get a still image for the LW gallery?

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 04:00 PM
im still just posing him to check my rigging. heres another, most of it is finished, I have only the head left..

09 September 2002, 04:12 PM
Neat! For some reason I'm hearing that Bee Gees tune "Staying Alive" playing in the windmills of my mind.

Michael JL
09 September 2002, 05:00 PM
I was wondering how you could rig the ankle with those boots and still look cool when the foot's twisted around. Well... it looks cool from this angle whatever you did !

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 03:18 AM
quick pose test....

09 September 2002, 05:43 AM
Great images!

Facial Deluxe
09 September 2002, 09:48 AM
That's excellent Mike, do you plan some set or perhaps an image with those big robots ?

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 06:14 PM
i plan to do quite a bit more with these guys. :)
Heres a quick run to test deformations.

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 12:05 AM
almost done rigging him....

09 September 2002, 12:09 AM
I like how you've got the shoulder armor animated.
Do those types of robo characters have stiff hips?
I'm guessing the tweaking is still a wip.

09 September 2002, 01:24 AM
This project has really come a long way....I'm curious as to what your end goal to share it with us?

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 03:15 AM
Not yet. :)

09 September 2002, 03:30 AM
Even better....:bounce:

Hi mike,

Nice run, was wondering if the whole body shoudn't be more rotated though...

Love those colors...

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 01:03 PM
Probably. :) You like the washed out colors? I'm using the HDR expose filter with a white point of 1.0 and a black percentage of 70%.

Dan Dixon
09 September 2002, 04:14 AM
looking good mike. I like that you post often so that we can see the progress. cheers. Also on another note can you send me you email again I switch internet providers and want to keep in touch. Thanks

09 September 2002, 11:37 PM
woh, that is coool :) so are those endomorphs or do you have a bone setup with that? maybe both?

09 September 2002, 01:17 AM
Good expression. He looks sneaky!

One thing I noticed is that the nostril wings' top border is stretching up while the lower portion is stationary. I'm not sure that they're supposed to stretch in length from top to bottom rather than shift up or down in whole without much stretching occuring.
(maybe mine are just atrophied and stiff!)

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 01:18 AM
endos for the face, and bones with weightmaps to rotate the eyes.

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 01:20 AM
your right about that. I may tweak that one a bit. I'll use it mainly for breathing....

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 02:42 AM
Baked in some vertex lighting to add nice soft shadows that render quickly....

very nice!

*jaw drops*

this thread has come along way cant wait to see more. Whatever happened to your daemon mike he still getting any attention?

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 06:17 AM
Nope, The little free time I have has been going into this guy. I've finally gotten a low rez standin setup so that I can actually animate him. I gotta say thats the one thing im most frustrated with in LW, the IK calc speed and opengl redraw. But then again you can just set your poly threshold to 0 and it flys along... but thats dosent really provide decent feedback.

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 07:22 AM
here he is with his standin animation version:

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 06:03 AM
here is a quick environment test, this isn't exactly what I'm going for but its cool to see them on somthing other than the white floor.

09 September 2002, 06:16 AM
Nice Mikey. And when does the kick ass Moon Warriors bad guy entrance happen?

Oh yeah, always impressive.

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 12:40 PM

Cool as always!

Mike RB
09 September 2002, 03:06 PM
another quick render....

09 September 2002, 05:13 PM
Good but the lighting really looks flat too me, I also think that snowflakes are too big and bark textures resolution too low.

I don't know Robotech, is there a site where I could see what It looks like or some pics that you used as references?

Keep on. :)

Mike RB
10 October 2002, 02:38 PM
the rig can pretty much do everything it needs to. And he renders pretty quick with the baked lighting as well. At 640x480/low AA/p3 700/ 17 sec per frame.

Ripper: I'll see about finding some reference stuff, its the same design but as 2d animators would go insane redrawing camo its all birght flat colors in the show. I agree about my test fog lighting.

10 October 2002, 02:40 PM
Very nice!

I bet you can't make him do the hula or the moon walk.

10 October 2002, 04:42 PM
I see a music video in the worx:eek:

Mike, you always post cool stuff for us!

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed at first as you haven't been able to get the bot dude dancin the moon walk or the hula dance.

10 October 2002, 08:47 PM
This is really coming together....I can't wait to see what you show us next!

10 October 2002, 08:54 PM
Mike you rock!!:airguitar

I to love Robotech! Used to watch it on tv back in the days!
But now to see in 3D!
And those cyclone riders where one my favorites.
You talk about front and side views did you find some good ones on the net? If so could you post the link or send it by email please.
I'll try to find some go front and side for the transform ones. So cool! They have to be modeled.

Keep it up man!

Mike RB
10 October 2002, 10:54 PM
Chewey, dont worry, after defeating thier alien foes they always do a hula dance followed by a quick break for lunch then some breakdancing in the afternoon. Maybe some more 'killin in the evening, then dinner and they head off to a techno-euro-rave-dance party until about 3am. They work hard.

10 October 2002, 12:01 AM
lol!! I'm relieved to hear that, Mike. Looks like they actually lead fairly normal lives after all.

Killin and ravin, that's pretty well balanced!

10 October 2002, 12:05 PM

thats all I have to say right now :)

10 October 2002, 06:23 PM
Hi Mike, I'm really enjoying watching the progress on this project.

One question. I've seen the same sort of knee and elbow pointers that you are using on other rigs as well, but don't know how they are working. Any tips ?

im new to lw Actually I’m kind of new to 3d so this stuff gives me a hint of what can be done :)

10 October 2002, 08:34 PM
Cool Mike... I'm loving this thread...

10 October 2002, 11:35 PM
Hey Mike,

Or anyone who can tell me this..

Are you modeling the body mesh in one layer, then in a second layer making the armor objects?? then parenting the second layer to bones of the body mesh..? I hope you understand what i'm asking ya.. I haven't tryed to do anything like this, but it is pretty useful to know what techniques you use... Thanks

Mike RB
10 October 2002, 01:12 AM

Are you modeling the body mesh in one layer, then in a second layer making the armor objects?? then parenting the second layer to bones of the body mesh..?

Yep. Almost exactly that, Except that I put them in seperate object files instead of layers.

10 October 2002, 01:40 AM
Wow Mike,
I've stayed away from this thread for a while and you are rockin' it!!! :buttrock:

That is great! :)

10 October 2002, 02:19 AM
Helo Mike RB,

I must say, you are one very organized dude! You follow through in the modelling, it just so happen that i watch muspeada 2 nites ago (in japanese). I hope the texturing is not the current ones right, because it looks plasticky and clean.

Hmmm... looking at your trooper i guess you haven't started on the bad dudes yet (texture i mean).

Say, can you maybe post your models on a real photo of a forest and render it at 1600x1200?

My Desktop needs a goooood pic!

Facial Deluxe
10 October 2002, 09:38 AM

10 October 2002, 06:02 AM

10 October 2002, 07:00 AM

I really wish I could do that too! (Scratches head and opens modeler...:hmm: )
Well done, can't wait to see the results, keep it comin!!!

Mike, you are too cool man.

10 October 2002, 05:08 AM
Mike RB

Do you mind sharing your texturing techniques on the red crab? What texture technique did you use (Procedural? Painted?)? What are the surface settings in the texture editor you used?

I really think it looks really great.

Mike RB
10 October 2002, 02:35 PM
I'm using a veins bump map, and a gradient on diffuse and color based on incidence angle.

10 October 2002, 09:34 PM
Thanks for the screenshot MikeRB! Glad to be able to learn from your techniques, the result looks very good.

Mike RB
10 October 2002, 03:25 PM

Nice work Mike!

10 October 2002, 02:46 PM
Mike I'm so glad you're going this far. This is turning out to be the best thread in a long time. I'm actually going to rate it a fiver.:D

I wonder if you have any plans to release some tutorials on this experience. If not, I'd encourage you to at least preserve enough data for possible ones in the future.

How do you add the black marks on the purple robot in the exact positions that you want?

Whenever i apply an image map it turns out all wrong and is not what i want.

Mike RB
10 October 2002, 03:31 PM
I just change the surface color of those polys.

10 October 2002, 06:01 PM
Nice work Mike. I like the red one a lot.

10 October 2002, 08:17 AM
Oh o.k you just sub patch to smooth it out right? i love the

moving image of the purple robot, it's movement is so fluid like.

Mike RB
10 October 2002, 09:12 AM
Yep. Sub-patch is great.

10 October 2002, 05:57 AM
Mike: WOW!!! I had forgotten about this thread for a while and was completely blown away when I just read it all again. That vein map looks great on the robots. The coloring on the red bot is great, the grey turrets look just like strange insect eyes. I agree with Shadow_link, the movements are great. Since you are dealing with mechs, did you model the different body parts seperately or something else? Great work!

Mike RB
10 October 2002, 06:37 AM
Thanks for the animation thoughts.... this is the same animation dropped into the forest test scene.

They were all modeled in one file, but a lot of the parts arent really attached.

10 October 2002, 08:52 AM
Really like the new animation. Like proton, I am really looking forward to the end product.

I guess I wasn't really clear with my question, sorry. Since you modelled it all in one file, did you seperate out each moving part into a different layer or did you use weight-maps and bones?

Mike RB
10 October 2002, 10:10 AM
weightmaps and bones.

10 October 2002, 11:50 AM

Did I say you are DA MAN!?

10 October 2002, 08:32 PM
Yeah, that scene is great! I don't yet understand the weightmaps and bones, but i'll eventually get there.

Quick pose to check scale.... The bike looks a little small... but then again I think most bikes are.... hard to say...

10 October 2002, 03:49 PM
IMHO, on first brush it does look a little small, but I'd have to check some reference images to be sure.

10 October 2002, 04:05 PM
Okay, I found some info on the net:

A. Motorcycle mode
Total Height: 1.09m
Total Width: 0.50m
Total Length: 2.05m

Here's the link:
Robotech Technical Files (

Seems to depend on the 'era'. It can be a long as 2.4m

Here's a pic!

This is cool stuff!

10 October 2002, 08:19 PM
From the images it looks as if the bike needs to be longer horizontally.. Looks awesome though...

10 October 2002, 09:28 PM

Mike RB
10 October 2002, 04:34 PM
I fixed up the size issue and some of the proportions...

10 October 2002, 04:57 PM
This stuff is really inspirational.

One comment on the bike though, if you don't mind...

The image posted from the animation shows a gas tank section that is missing from the bike in the model. This gas tank behind the handle bars would give it the appropriate length. Also the spokes in front should be farther from the body(adding the gas tank would fix that too...)

Wow... some tutorials on how you did this would definitely be awesome!!!

10 October 2002, 05:28 PM
I also think the pics I posted, of the bike, are stylized to have wide-lens distortion - so the front may not be as long as it directly appears.
All in all, Mike rocks.

MikeRB, could you want/need assistance in modeling other items for you anim? maybe, I dunno, boulders or blocky trucks or something to get tossed around! :)

10 October 2002, 06:49 PM
*Lifts jaw from keyboard*
the model really rocks!
can't wait to see a full action vid ;)
i'd work a bit on the run animation though, it seems a bit... unnatural.. other than that, keep up the stunning work!

10 October 2002, 07:27 PM
i really like the color of the bad guys but why not make it a bit like this new flip flop colors on cars that changes with viewing angel would be look cool on the purple bot i think

10 October 2002, 08:54 PM
Wow! You did a great job on this guy! Congrats with him! Im glad to see you got him to look really good with perseduals.. er can't spell. but UVmapping SubD is hard with all the nastyness happening, but what you did looks really good. I guess i should start playing with those more and relying on my photoslop less. :curious:

Hehe keep it up~!!!! :applause:

10 October 2002, 08:55 PM
Ohw!!! It is cool, very..very cool!!! :applause:

10 October 2002, 09:09 PM
Absolutely wonderful........this is some great work with a great subject.

10 October 2002, 09:20 PM
lovely, just lovely. i used to be crazed by roboteck when i was i think 10-14. recorded episodes, made figures with plastisine to the exact nuts and bolts. bad them movable by putting some wooden matches inside joints.... but had to keep the figures in the freezer coz it was plastisine :)
cool stuff, sertaintly reminded me of good times

11 November 2002, 01:26 AM
OMG! I always thought LW was a very good modeler, too bad i can't release it's full potential like Mike has. Sniff sniff! :D But really awesome stuff coming along here, gives me real inspiration to model mechs... wouldn't it be cool if the animation consists Robotech like war then suddenly you see the Autobots jumping in. LoL! It'll be like a war to actually see who will conquer the cartoon era. :applause:

Anyway, just a teenny winsy suggestion there. Everything else on this topic... *till my keyboard is soaked*

11 November 2002, 03:39 AM
Mike should get a prize for this being the longest thread ever, and it still isn't done yet... I check it everyday just to see what Mike has in store for us..

You've recieved the spanking new CGtalk choice award, , you're still up on frontpage making you 1 or 3 to recieve it so far. Please feel free to display this image anywhere you like :) congrats

P.S. if you need a different background, please send me a PM with the RGB values.

11 November 2002, 04:07 PM
w00t! great stuff Mike, I have been following this model for a while now, you sure have your stuff together, congrats on the award!!

11 November 2002, 09:06 PM
  two thumbs up...... really amazing!

11 November 2002, 10:17 PM
Absolutely awesome. As a fellow Macross fan it's great to see some work like this. I also thought I would mention the new Macross OVAs that are going to be released in japan in December entitled Macross Zero this takes place in the earlier days of the macross universe. I think shortly after the Zentradi encounters. (possibly prior I only went over the article breifly) It looks like it'll be great I have a clip of the promo video it's 13mb and good quality if someone wants to host it I'll hook ya up.

11 November 2002, 11:34 PM
Thanks for all the comments.... progress is ongoing but slow..

11 November 2002, 07:19 PM
wow, just wow, this thread is so great. Really impressive work, Mike, great job. Every page in this thread has something on it that is just awesome. I wonder what your preferred rigging technique is for the soldier, tried to pick the pic apart, but man, there's just so much there. Your tests of the rigging work on every level, and I really can't wait for the final scene, whatever it may be, keep up the great work,

Mike RB
11 November 2002, 04:45 PM
preferred rigging technique? Most of the soldier is just objects parented to bones.

Its not hard... if you put a bone in each part of a hydralic cylender and target the bones at eachother, with weightmaps to keep them from grabbing the wrong stuff, you get a pretty good hydraulic piston...

11 November 2002, 05:23 PM
Great work mike. You are really knocking it out!

Mike RB your bike rig is begging for a tutorial.
Good job!

04 April 2003, 08:58 PM
OMG this is the coolest thing I've ever seen, I'm a Robotech fan and I've always wanted to see 3D models of a Cyclone etc. This is the sweetest thing, damn good job man.

I'm starting to get into 3D modeling now (100% newbie) and I've been considering several programs, after this thread I think I'm going to go with Lightwave.

I went to your site but I couldn't find any Robotech stuff, can you post the link to wherever you are storing the .avis on the net? Are you planning to do more with these models? They are begging for their own short, I know I am :)

04 April 2003, 03:23 AM
U can do TV series already.:bounce: :bounce:

04 April 2003, 02:43 PM
Everything youmodeled so far rules and all (:buttrock: ). However I am not a happy camper till I see some Veritech action! :airguitar

05 May 2003, 02:19 PM
When's the update coming on your project, Mike? Keep on keeping on!

08 August 2003, 04:31 PM
Hi Mike, really good work man :buttrock:

This is my work, made in TrueSpace Caligari 1.04

Gun Pod 11

08 August 2003, 09:06 PM
just saw macross zero - episodes 1 and 2.

some kick ass 3d veritech fight scenes in that..

impressive stuff!!

basically this is set pre macross space armadas.

roy batty is flying the "NEW" veritech, and cleaning the clocks of all the "obsoltete" aircraft in the skys.

hehe very very cool.

02 February 2004, 09:32 AM
Hey I'm thinking about modeling the cyclone charater to. Not sure though. I've been looking for reference pics and I came across this. This is pretty cool. Are you going to animate the transformation of the bike onto the man. Thats what I would like to do. Tring to find good references of the transformation. Probly have to buy a book for that. Do you got any good ref pics I can use?

Can't wait for more updates to.

02 February 2004, 04:40 AM
Hope this inspirates you to make more cyclones

02 February 2004, 12:51 PM
I prefer the meca-airplanes of the first part of the serial...
did you know robotech in japan didnt ever exist and that thr us version was made by cuttin'&pating three different series?
anyway your work kooks good!
go on end tel us see!

02 February 2004, 05:09 PM
The new Robotech videogame coming in fall 2004 features Robotech cyclones. So do the new Robotech series and the new Robotech comics, but there arent pictures of it yet. (today a cyclone should appear in the issue #2 of the Robotech Invasion comics)

Robotech cyclone 3d from videogame (

They arent as cool as Mike´s one IMO, but a good reference I suppose. You also can see the cyclone in armor mode. I have a tiff file which shows at least partially the cyclone transformation in a toy if someone is interested in modeling it, I could email it. I have a bigger picture of the 3d cyclone from the videogame too.

02 February 2004, 10:40 PM
Hey Daidalus I would like the tiff file please. I'm not sure if i'm gona model it yet. If I do It won't be in awhile. Cause I'm gona finish 2 other projects I'm doing right know. Maybe I'll start it soon and do 3 projects at one time. And can you send any other reference pics to please. I been looking in the internet and can't find any really good pics. And I can't find any tranformation references.

Here is my email address

02 February 2004, 08:03 PM
Already emailed you links with info and files. I dont want to turn this thread off topic, so if I do and since its Mike´s topic feel free moderators to erase the post.

May be this other guy cyclone in 3d also will help you.

Also check

Cyclone (

More cyclones (

Thing is, no one has modeled the cyclone transformation succesfully or even tried. The first cyclone transformation in 3d we will see its going to be seen first in that new Robotech videogame to be released in fall of this year.

02 February 2004, 09:58 PM
Thanks alot man the refs will work good. I might even buy the action figure. Thats if I can actually find one. And I can't wait for the game. That would be cool to take control of the cyclones and transform in to the motorcycle.

02 February 2004, 11:01 AM
wow, I like how you did that Dai.

02 February 2004, 11:56 PM
I didnt do anything here. If you are talking about the cyclones in the former post, they are from Brian Westgate, and a reference for modeling cyclones for DgAPc.

02 February 2004, 12:48 AM
My mistake sorry. Still looks good though.

02 February 2004, 04:24 PM
Evangelion Owns Robotech :scream:

02 February 2004, 08:59 AM
I don't have a cyclone but the Alpha.

02 February 2004, 03:47 PM
Alpha rules

These following models where made by a chilean called Miguel Angel Troncoso "Mike Hawk" to be used for a cover for a Robotech fanzine called "El legado de Zor" we are going to show here on tv in an anime program to be seen in part of several Latin America countries thanks to the Robotech fan club "Herederos de Zor"

The cover will feature a third Robotech new mecha called " VF-X-6 Genia" thats an Alpha prototype.

BTW, just for the record, the creative director of the new Robotech series was yesterday in the chat, chatting from Japan. He has a meeting with some of the creators of Mospeada and Southern Cross, and he told us what they are making there as storyline for the new Robotech series, is going to affect the direction of the Robotech comics they are making here.

02 February 2004, 11:30 PM
very good work every thing just great
ur work amazing

02 February 2004, 04:44 AM
Hey Beansmith, just in case you want to complete your Alpha team with the Alpha prototype :)

02 February 2004, 11:14 AM
This same model but in 3d by Mike Hawk (Miguel Angel Troncoso)

02 February 2004, 06:22 PM
Daidalus - The prototype looks cools, but my next robot mecha project will be the beta. That way I will get A, B, and maybe C (cyclone).

02 February 2004, 07:54 PM
That´s very cool. I havent seen any good Beta cg mecha in internet yet.

02 February 2004, 02:33 PM
I started my beta, will post my wip in the wip forum
and on my web page.

02 February 2004, 11:28 PM
Hi guys,

I am new to the forum. With that said, here is something I did last year for the Robotech GBA game, this illustration ended up getting canned last minute.

I actually ended up modeling most of the mecha for Macross (except the battle pods, someone else did those) in a super deformed style.

And yes, the colors are whacked. It was necesary to render that way for the gameboy to show the colors properly

It was a fun project

02 February 2004, 02:25 PM
That SDF-1 looks sweet. Its cool to see people involved with official Robotech cg like cover comics or videogames. The starter of this thread indeed was offered to work in the now almost finished PS2 Robotech videogame. It was really a shame he couldnt accept cause I like Robotech: New Generation models better than the videogame ones :(

Do you have more pictures of Robotech: The Macross Saga to see?

02 February 2004, 02:10 PM
Hey Guys, I remember watching Robotech back in the day. I LOVED it... I was working with some guys on recreating some scenes from the original series.

I never quite finished this one.. but I am revisitng it once in a while..
I have yet to find a shader look I like on it but here are 2 different examples.

There are more renders on my website,

Mostly more mecha, including the 2 unused boss mecha (the client preffered to go with mecha from the show as bosses not something new).

02 February 2004, 05:25 PM
Looks very good. I also saw at your webpages you have some Invids, do you have some pics of that? BTW, have you ever tried to make a new Robotech designs inspirated in other Robotech designs? I saw a 3d modeler that after watching the Robotech dvds came up with a design with part of the battloid Alpha, Hovertank and VF-1.

02 February 2004, 06:28 PM
This is very interesting,

but your client was right, fans dont like too much they change parts of the show we´ve seen adding mechas we havent seen in that part, unless you are making a videogame from an untold part of the story (or in other words, if you make a videogame of Robotech: The Macross Saga go with the designs we saw, but if you make a Robotech The Sentinels videogame new designs are welcome)

I started re-doing the invid just for old times. I made that like 7 years ago.. I will make an updated one, one of these days when I have some time..

I have never tried to make new designs.. I am not all that great when it comes to design.. I can build and rig like anyones business.. but designing has allways been a weak point for me.

02 February 2004, 01:07 AM
Why dont you try a new one too for the new times? The Robotech people along with the Mospeada people are using and re working the unused Robotech: New Generation / Mospeada designs for the new Robotech comics and series. They are making new ones too.

This is for example an Invid we never have seen in the series

And this is a couple of human mechas we havent seen

Soon or late Robotech will have to feature cg. Not only in comics and videogames as now, but in television series too.

02 February 2004, 10:24 AM
would love to see more !! :)

02 February 2004, 01:52 PM
I swear I replyed to this, but for some reason it didnt go thru :P

"Not only in comics and videogames as now, but in television series too."

Thats why we were redoing some scenes, to show try to show them what it could look like ;)

02 February 2004, 03:35 PM
In fact they tried to make a 100% based cg series with an american cg company but it sucked. But it was due to the bad script and because the cg was everywhere also in the human characteres (people doesnt like to see cg in characteres but in mecha only, for human characteres is better traditional animation) Now they returned to the japanese company which produced the 3 chapters of Robotech to animate it, and to the japanese creators of Southern Cross and Mospeada to help out. So most of the new Robotech series is going to be new or Mospeada (see the links I posted above) based.

BTW, noboby tries to model a Veritech Hovertank

(A lot of this stuff is in )

I don't want to hijack a thread but I was pointed here from by someone who knew of Mike's awesome models. I am expanding teh original Freespace2 Robotech mod and also doing a sequel called ROBOTECH II (REF). IF ANYONE who loves robotech , and can model, is interested in helping out to make this mod the best it can be then I implore you to please let me know.

I have had some modelers donate their models but they do not have the time to tweak them to make them fit the requirements (ie remove intersecting polys) divide the model into 3 or more subobjects. ect.. The game requirements are: no model over 5000 polys (the lower the better, good textures can do wonders), no object making up the model can be over 850 poly's (limit of 80 sub-objects so this isn't a problem unless the ship has a LOT of multi-part gun turrets). So I need help with some minor work on a few models.

So far what I need the most are INVID!!!! can't have a REF mod without the main bad guys! Good news is I have several REF ships (with textures) that should work fine once tweaked. As well as teh red, gree, blue, and shadow alphas (but we still need all the battloids!).

As for the original Robotech mod we have all the basics, I have been giving the blessing of the original team to expand it officially and have added non cannon stuff like the V-X-04b ect..

BTW I am NOT a modler, just a converter, and that is the limit to my skills. I'm just a urber-dedicated fan who has loved anime since 1976...

Finally not relevant BUT I am doing a side project where I have already combined Robotech, star trek, star wars, B5, BSG into one game. I hope to add Gundam, Buck Rogers, Nadesico, Star Blazers, and all other sci-fi shows, or related spaceship/mecha animes to make the ultimate cross-universe space combat game!

People say I am crazy to try this with a 6 year old game but I don't care! I WILL have the super robots from teh 70's making cameos, and maybe someday if I learn how, live action cutscenes with people acting in costumes in front of a home made blue screen for backgrounds (no matter how cheesy!)..

Some quick screens

ref ships

Star Destroyers vs borg cube

Temp sdf-1 firing at borg cube

my Gundam Whitebase attacks a Zent cruiser ( quadrano armor used as Zakus till we can get proper gundams!)

Finally the BIGGEST DOGFIGHT EVER! all the evil races band together to defend ZaHaDum... The Zents, Empire, Shadows, Borg, and Cylons each have 5 cap ships and 20 fighters each (total 125ships) versus equal number of good guys (20caps +100ftrs) for a grand total of 200 fighters and 50 capships all duking it out and YOU are in the middle of it! Can one pilot make any difference in this killing field? (HELL NO!) but it was fun to be a part of!!! Of course my computer performance crawled but it could be done...

I hope you enjoyed my screens and don't think my request/goals are too impertenant.. Thank you if you read this far!
( if I don't see you here...
