Latest Update: Work In Progress: UAV- First Shot (

These are stills from footage I shot the other day. My Previz will go up soon, but wanted to get these up to get started. In this sequence, my secret agent is literally running for his life. This is the last shot of the trailer, but the most difficult to pull off, so I shot it first.

I'm actually using this trailer for a web blog I'm developing. What better way to gain exposure?

The web blog is called Hokum, and it's about a videographer who documents everything. He then posts what he documents online in a blog for the public to see.
Turns out what he is documenting is all connected in some way.

The format is basically the fictional character (the person filming and writing on the fictional blog) is using a blog as his public diary.......for all to see what he has been documenting.
The blog and videos will be formatted in such a way, so that viewers will ask...."Woa, did this stuff really happen?"

Heavy influences on the trailer and the web blog are Cloverfield and Bourne, as you can tell from the purely handheld shot.

I'm using an HV20 to film.
Mainly going to do heavy compositing and some matte paintings. Very little 3d, I think only 2 shots will have 3d elements.

The web blog will premiere after the challenge is complete.

Fantastically dynamic. :D

I did more filming over the weekend. 5 or 6 shots. Unfortunately my actor pulled a muscle, so filming will be postponed for a few weeks. Really though, only have one more action shot to film.

Really need to get my previz up, so I can talk about what I did, otherwise it won't make sense.

Alright here's my previz.

As you can tell, no drawing skills.

But this previz is for me anyways and I get what's going on.

To clarify, since I can't draw.....

1-4 is a UAV attack.
5 is some quick dialogue with the trailer's tagline "Document Everything"
6 is a classic "meet contact" scene
7 is a shot of a massive facility built within cliffs. This shot I will also submit for consideration for a matte painting
8 Fires a gun. We actually go get to fire real guns. Yes, safety first
9 A gadget shot. Will have a CG generated UI which will show a glimpse of the antagonist.
10 Looking down a street from a building with a huge rifle. Another matte painting
11 Running on a sidewalk next to a highway. Already filmed this and my actor is recovering from an injury sustained during this shot
12 A car bomb goes off
13 The final shot. Let's say tons of explosions. Already filmed and actor got bruised up a bit doing this. But he's OK! He is going to post here shortly I believe.
After all this will be the title with credits, etc
Depending on the edit I may re-arrange some items, and add a shot or two. Really don't like having 13 shots........

Hi Everyone,

I am Frank, the one playing the agent in this contest. Just wanted to stop by and let everyone know I am still alive. After the first scene we filmed I got all bruised up. I'm sure Timmay will have those pictures online at some point. On our next set I managed to pull a Quad Muscle while I was running. We did still manage to get a few more shots done. After a few more days of rest and vacation we will start shooting again :-D Im sure Timmay will update the post and keep everyone in the loop.

Till next time,

Frank B

Back from a weeklong vacation, and some rest for Frank.
We filmed a quick shot, guerilla style on a local business street.
Some production stills below.

Yes. I'm filming with an HV20.
I've incorporated my equipment limitations into the story.........such as all of this is being captured via handheld camera.

07 July 2009, 01:41 AM (

Here's another.

This is the shot where my agent jumps away as his car is blown to pieces. The camera is sitting to the right, out of frame at a slight Dutch angle.
Frank, who posted above, is back in action, still with a sore leg. But he performed this stunt in 90degree heat while wearing winter clothing. He threw himself to the ground scraping up his hands.
So all, please give props to Frank.

We have one or two shots left to film. We are using REAL guns, in an isolated area, so we are taking time to plan out the shots for safety. Should film those in the next week or so.

I'm not sure how to upload multiple images into one post so I've started a flickr set as I go along for filming.

Cool. Looking interesting although not much of CGI so far.
Do you have sth like a rough edit of all that stuff that you filmed.. or perhaps some sort of animatic you could show?

Ahh finally. Some CG work.

Render of a UAV Reaper, straight from Max and plopped into AE. Need to do some touch up to really set it in there. As the shot goes along, the Reaper flies away. The camera zooms into it as a missile is fired at the structure across the river. An explosion and black smoke ensues. :D
The plate was filmed ontop of a cliff overlooking the Potomac River.
Pretty much all my shots will be in different locales to try to capture that "secret agent travels to hundreds of locations in 2hrs" feel. ;)

The model is from Google's 3d Warehouse. The rights on there state that models are royalty free. I would've modeled it myself, but just don't have enough the time with all these shots I need to complete.

I do have an edit, but I still have a bunch of slugs to fill in with unshot footage. When all the footage is shot, I'll post an edit.

Well I was hoping to have that shot done by today.

But last night I spent all night trying to get missile smoke trails. I tried in Max and with particular. I can get the material looking great, its just how it comes off of the missile that looks horrible.

I looked at some footage and there are times when you can barely see a missile fired. It's just a streak. I may go that route since it's more realistic.

07 July 2009, 03:31 PM
Hey! this is looking really great... be careful with stunts, they can be a little painful :argh:

And with the guns... wouldn't it be safer to do all the exhaust fire in post??

07 July 2009, 04:02 PM
Yes it's safer. But we get to fire real guns and film it. Awesome.

Every precaution is being taken for safety. We have supervision. The camera will be all by itself recording on a tripod, I won't be anywhere near when the gun goes off.
