I decided to participate in Individual Video category.
I will be creating a movie trailer.
Working name for the movie is "Agent Kowalski".
Idea for plot:

People take electricity for granted. Its in every home, every socket, everywhere around us. An evil genius decided to send the world back to steam age (previous CG Challenge) by firing an electric Impulse that will deactivate all electrical power on the planet. He has built two satellite navigated "electric impulse pylons". Pylons are located on 2 different parts of the world. One in London UK, another one in Chicago USA.
There is only one man that can stop his evil plan - polish secret agent Kowalski.

I will be posting more info on character design, locations etc.
Good Luck to all participants.

As you can see I am working on storyboard.
Yes, I know.. my drawings are very crude, but that's the way it is at the creative stage.
I am still working on it therefore it can go through huge makeover.
I am arranging it, and rearranging it.. Adding more and more ideas.
At the moment there are some ideas of agent being briefed, entering skyscraper through the window, car chase, all can do briefcase, shoot up, explosions etc.
Most of this will be sorted out while working on animatic. Then I will know exactly how many shot I can put in.

There is a MI6 HQ building in London, close to where I work so I might use that in the trailer.
I have more and more story ideas every day. Not sure if I will have time to pull it off.

Technically speaking I have decided to include some live action. All actors will be shot on green screen.
I am building a green screen studio at work. I will be posting updates of what I bought etc.
There will be a lot of keying, camera tracking and matchmoving. All of which I have never done, therefore I am treating this competition as a great opportunity to learn new stuff.

I have decided on the budget which is 200 GBP at the moment.
So far I have bought some green cloth, green tape, and green spray paint.
I have ordered 48 ping pong, some markers, 1 lamp with barn doors, 1 fluorescent lamp and some white nylon to create soft box and 8 Red Bulls :)

Also I have ordered video game for my wife too keep her busy at least a little while I am spending hundreds of hours on the trailer.

I will be working on the trailer only after work and at the weekends therefore I need to start fast.
Hopefully I will be able to render at work.

At the moment I am looking for someone with HD camcorder that I could borrow.
Also lights.. I need good lights for green screen.

Second part of my crude storyboard.

I went for a walk around London to look for some inspirations and references. First with my brother than with my wife.
We have take bunch of pictures that shoudl be usefull for modeling and perhaps some camrea projection.

06-22-2009, 08:16 AM
I can see alot of work going into this already! Looking forward to seeing the progress!

06-22-2009, 12:48 PM
The next two images show some of the bits I have for shooting green screen.
Whant you can see in the first one is the place where green screen will be and objects listed in my previous post.
Today I have ordered 2 pistol replicas that I will use for shooting. Replicas are blue, but I will paint them black.

Second image shows huge roll for boubble foil that I managed to get for free form instalation company. I will need that to do the stunt :) which will be a somersault when agent crashes thorugh a window to enter a building on high floor.
I have started working on animatic :D

06-22-2009, 02:33 PM
Good news.
I got hold of green screen stands (tripods) :)
I will be able to hang that green muslin cloth properly and have less wrinkles while shooting.
I still need more lights and softbox perhaps.

Also I am looking for someone that I could borrow HD camcorder from.

06-22-2009, 03:31 PM
Cool I'm doing live action too. Remember that lighting is what will separate the good from the bad. Take the time to figure out how to make each shot light well. and be careful with that stunt, lol, that thin pop packing stuff isn't a crash pad. Looking forward to seeing the footage! good luck shooting.

06-23-2009, 10:58 AM
I wish I can take a walk around London for some inspirations and references :)

Looks interesting :)

Good luck!!!

The green screen cloth that I bought on ebay has finally arived. It is a bit wrinkeled, so It needs ironing or steam ironing.
The work is in progress... :)
Tripods are borrowed form the company I work for.

Meanwhile I have asked my friend with very nice diction,if she could do a bit of voiceover for my trailer. She hasn't confirmed it yet so I am keeping fingers crossed for that.

I am still looking for camcorder.
Two of my freinds have HD camcorders. I haven't spoken to them yet. I will do that once I have finished animatic.

Good stuff, good stuff...

06-23-2009, 01:04 PM

tip on green screen. Try to stay as far away from the green screen as possible for shooting, and try to light the screen with as much light as you can w/o it spilling too much on the actor.
That green isn't the right green, meaning it won't be as easy to key and it won't be light very well. The green you see in green screens is trying to be as close to video green (0, 1, 0) as possible. So think about the colors that the actor will have on, and try to get as far away from the bg green as possible. (if the story alows it)
If you want to do a quick test, take a picture of that green screen with the actor into photoshop and try to magic wand select the green. See what else it will select, and that will be similar to what will happen in comp.

Another tip, if you can have the actor wear a hat, you'll be able to fudge a lot more, since the hair details won't need to be kept (the hardest part of green screening)

good luck! I'm watching and waiting :D

06-23-2009, 08:00 PM
Thanks Staszek and destruct007

In reality that green cloth is greener and less blue.. It think that my camera captrued it incorectly.. I know it because my shirt is also greener in reality.

Green screen was one of the reasons why I decided to wear a hat :). Lets make life a little bit easier. My actor (who would be myself) will be dressed prominently in black to avoid color spill. Also light is easier to mach on the black cloths because shadows are less apparent.

I need to sort out lights... that will be difficult becauce my 200 GBP budget is almost gone.

Most of the shots in my trailer will be night shots so hopefully it will be easier to light.

Oh man... than there will be keying, tracking, matchmoving .. all that on top of 3D scenes.
Sometimes I think.. What have I got myself into??.. :)

06-23-2009, 08:19 PM
Oh man... than there will be keying, tracking, matchmoving .. all that on top of 3D scenes. Sometimes I think.. What have I got myself into??.. :)

hahaha man I know it! Good thinking about the black no spill. I hadn't thought of that as a spill suppressor before.

06-24-2009, 10:48 PM
a lot of work!

06-25-2009, 01:06 PM
If you are planning to do some camera mapping you could use some yellow stickers on the screen, when keying it out with the green channel the stickers shouldn't be seen, and for tracking use the red channel.... you should see a black background with bright white spots (Red + Green = Yellow)

06-25-2009, 08:40 PM
Thanks Isk. That is a good point. I have bought various colors of stickers. I will have some for foreground and some for backgroud to get good paralax. I also bouht green tape which is on one of the pictures above. Hopefuly that will work. :)

I have contacted company that sells bb guns, and asked if they have any broken ones and they send me those two blue replicas (broken and with no magazines).
The reason why they are blue is that in UK by law all bb guns on sale need to have bright colors.
I have bought a black matt spray paint and painted them over.

I will use them in one or two scenes.

06-29-2009, 01:33 PM
I love the briefcase gun! And the shot where the grappling hook is fired into the building is gonna be pretty cool when finished. :D

06-30-2009, 01:53 AM
I feel the need to stress Destruct007's point about the distance from the actor(s) to the green screen. The spill can be a killer. Two work lights on the screen do a nice job. Keylight in After Effects can pull a good key even out of marginal footage. Set the view to Screen Matte and play with the "Clip Black" and "Clip White" Settings. You'll be amazed. If you don't use AE, sorry to have bothered you. Not that it's much but you can see the evolution of my no-budget green screen experience here...

06-30-2009, 04:34 AM
looking nice..like a small james bond short..but i will wait for more cause there are some parts that are a little confused rigth now...but good job

06-30-2009, 08:31 AM
Thanks lunar1369. I appreciaty your comment. I have purchased additional light to lit green screen. Also I have borrowed light reflecto from my brother, so I will have a bit of flexibility to play around with lights.
I want to have animatic 100% finished before I start shooting.
I was thinking of cuting few animatic shots shorter to give it more pace.
Also I will talk to my friend who is good with cinematography, perhaps he can give me some tips. I am hoping to borrow camera form him.
Meanwile I have started modeling London :) and Chicago for aerial shots.
Exciting stuff, althought I need to get used to going to bed at 3 am and waking up at 7-8.

Thanks melkao. I am still working on animatic. If you have any tips or comments, I would appreciate that a lot.
Which shots are little confusing? Perhaps I could change camera angle or change those shots to make it more appealing to the audience.

07-01-2009, 01:42 PM
the challenge up loader is fixed/back. I did what you did, a link outside, anyhoo, just fyi.

07-01-2009, 09:08 PM
Thanks man. I will upload something soon :)

07-01-2009, 11:04 PM
Thanks melkao. I am still working on animatic. If you have any tips or comments, I would appreciate that a lot.

Well...maybe couse the animatic is still very basic, and the animation is still raw....mybe is that....but for example when the character is at the edge of a bridge at 1:27 the is lookin an explosion..is not clrea that transition....but all that is maybe for being basic. And perhaps tos smooth the camera movements...

07-01-2009, 11:40 PM
Thanks melkao.
I agree that it is not very clear. On that one character is actualy at the edge of the building. That part of animatic is a sequence of random shots that doesnt have too much in common :)
Its just different action shots not realy telling any story.
I think that bridge shot is too confusing, I might add something to support it

I was just working on the shot of London.
Above you can see the test frame.
I think I might add a bit of fog as it sometimes gets foggy in London.
Soon I should have that shot animated.

Another update. This is the lamp that you can find at Westminster bridge in London.
I tried to make it as close to the real one as I could without going into extreme details.

Today I have modeled pistol.
I will have closeup shot of it in the trailer, although it is not in animatic.

This is the WIP of two shots I am working on.

Both shots are combination of 3d and camera projection.

For Chicago shot I will add lake Michigan in the background.
For London I will add car or cars on the bridge.

Perhaps a bit of fog... but I am not sure about it.

Please let me know what you think.

Looking really nice! I love the first shot. :D

07-08-2009, 09:04 AM
Yeh! This is looks really great!

07-08-2009, 09:17 AM
Well Well..that's getting somewhere! Nice job there.
Besides, maybe you would like to tweak the camera movement in the 2nd shot. It feels too CG.

Keep them coming

07-08-2009, 01:05 PM
Thanks guys.
Its motivating to hear a good words.
I am getting on with modeling etc.
Still plenty to do... but geting there :)

07-08-2009, 05:07 PM
High quality work. I would add some fog in the London shot. That and more natural camera movement would make it feel more real. This is one I am keeping an eye on.

Cheers and God bless.

07-08-2009, 07:17 PM
That's really cool. Nice work on these first shots. Maybe tone down the glow a touch, It's blowing it out in spots. Keep up the good work though, It's looking great.

07-08-2009, 09:11 PM
OMG...thats amazing!,,,how you did that city?...tell us about the procces!

07-09-2009, 09:01 AM
Thanks BlenderFan, Richard3d and melkao. :bounce:
I think I will give more love to camera movement.
Nightime fog is quite tricky because all the lights need to glow thorugh it and it doesn't fade to white like during a day. I will have gave it a try but I wasn't sayisfied with results.

melkao city is a just an photography (I took form Sears tower in Chicago in 2006) projected on quite a few boxes or box like buildings modeled to match photography. There was also a bit of matte painting going on :). I wanted to keep buildings as close as I could to real positios, therefore I took few screengrabs of googlemaps to know aproximately where buildings are. I have few pictures of Chicago during a day, that also helped.
I am going to Chicago for a week hollidays this month therefore I might take better photography. I will upload a screen gab for you tonight

Thanks.

07-09-2009, 03:26 PM
Well...let me say that is a real nice job, i couldn't imagine how you did it!...i will keep in mind that technique in the future!

07-10-2009, 03:01 PM
Whoa pierzak, very cool work so far! It's very inspiring to see an individual video entry that's also integrating live action and striving for a high standard like you are!

Best of luck with your work, sir!

I'd agree with the suggestions on the camera and the glow, but looking good nonetheless. Keep it up!

Best regards, Varun

As I have 2 shots with the Jet. I have modeled F14.. or F14 alike :)
Hope you like it.

BTw. Aniamtic is a bit out of date... I have added, altered and deleted few shots.. but overall is pretty much the as it was.

This was a long long night but I managed to finish one shot.
Here it is. I call it "F14 aerial"
Please let me know what you think of it.

Needs few more tweaks and perhaps motion blur but I would say it is 95% Done

Play Video >> (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/secret_agent/player.php?entry_id=103622)

07-12-2009, 03:22 PM
I think the last shot definitely need motion blur, but I also think it is too short and static. It is unclear that the plane is really moving fast. Perhaps if you had it fly into the shot? I can't judge very well as I don't know where this will fit in the overall trailer, so I will reserve judgment. Still, it looks really good.

Would you mind sharing how you did the smoke trail from the rocket?

Cheers and God bless.

I have added that missing 5% just to have this one finshed.

BlenderFan. Thanks for your comment. There is a fine room for this quck shot in my trailer. There will be one more shot with F14, but to do it I will need to shoot green screen first.
BTW smoke all smoke is from AfterBurn.

07-12-2009, 10:24 PM
I'm really likeing this one still cant beleive you have done so much all on your own way to go and good luck with the rest of it

07-12-2009, 10:38 PM
Thanks Grazy81.
Its another long night tonight :)

07-13-2009, 10:37 PM
that's pretty good WIP rocket trail for being a character modeler/animator. If you only used maya I'd have a bunch of tutorials for you on the water and fx :D (not that you need them per-say)
The rocket trail could almost be done in the hands of a good comper. The billowing, burning smoke is always harder.
The tip I have for water rendering is the no matter what the sun has to be opposite the camera, so it reflects along the water into camera bringing up its details.

Overall looking cool, reminds me of the shot from True Lies, the harriers that shoot the bridge.

07-13-2009, 10:44 PM
Thanks man. I might change sun direction on this one, although I also need to rush other shots.
I am working with 3ds max. I know FumeFx and AfterBurn quite well therefore I am hoping to do a bit more of smoke fire and exploions.
I am not so good with Maya though :(
Thinking of doing a shot of plane flying through the city.
Should look pretty good.

The best shots are still to come :)

Here is the preview of it.

07-13-2009, 10:58 PM
Thats pretty damn good again lol

How did you model the stitching?

07-14-2009, 12:44 AM
Modeled every single one :D hehe

I have modeled one and instanced it around.
This one is actualy based on the briefcase that I physicaly have.
I will switch between real and CG one.

07-14-2009, 02:53 AM
This is looking like a movie!

07-14-2009, 04:58 AM
Really nice progress!
Best to you!:applause:

07-14-2009, 05:07 AM
Good work with the F14! The camera movement and plane animation are very cool!

I don't know how you're getting any sleep at all, but keep it up! http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon13.gif

07-14-2009, 08:49 AM
Thanks guys.
Your possitive comments make my day at work fly faster because I can't wait to go home and do work for the trailer.

saeDubai, I think that over the years I learned to require less sleep than a regular human :). Although I do tend to fall asleep waiting for a render hehehe. Huge mug of coffee and 90% dark chocolate helps a lot :)

There is still so much to do on this one....

BTW I am seeing Transformers 2 at IMAX today. I will feast my eyes with the best vfx and hopefully come back excited much more motivated :)

After few long nights I finally have something I am happy with. Seriously... I am happy as hell with this one.

I have quickly modeled 3 buildings and created good textures for it.
A lot of matte painting on the streets and park.
And best of all I have rendered it with no GI to make it faster :)
All put together in AE over about 5 hours.

Its after 2 am and I am falling asleep. This was jet another long day.

07-17-2009, 08:51 PM
Great view and composition... the small alley, smaller buildings, ... Maybe the park can have some more lightning, or some benches, ...

Am curious about the other shots

07-17-2009, 11:37 PM
Thanks guys.
I have just aded few more cars at the bottom street.
I am having week hollidays so there will be fewer updates within next week.
While on holidays, I will do a photoshoot in Chicago for Chicago shots.
After holidays I will be finally shooting green screen as I have sorted out professional camcorder that is supposed to give good key. :) can't wait.

07-18-2009, 06:56 PM
have nice time,

shot from top looks good - exept park, needs to fit more to rest of envirnoment. Try to make some simple alpha textures for trees from top view (one by one on top - few will make feeling of full objects.) that way you will rescue details and some better lighting and colors in park area. Also you can use trees included in max , and mix stuff. Its simple way for making this shot better, i guess. Just advice;)

07-18-2009, 08:15 PM
I really like this shot a lot. Share with us your work on the texturing of the buildings. They look great!

Dude you are doing so much work so quickly I can't believe how far you've already gone! Your getting modeled, textured and light freakin' fast! Nice work so far. I'd like to see it all edited together to get the big picture. Keep it up! ...er slow it down! lol.

I Just came back from holidays in Chicago where I did great photoshoot for some of the shots I am working on. I also decided to add few new ones.

I am modelling car. Not a particular one but more like concept car. Kind of combination between few that I have seen during British Auto Show in 2008. I have spent few nigts modelling on my laptop during hollidays... I have to say my laptop is 5 years old and it is slooooooow.

07-29-2009, 01:38 AM
I have just noticed that seats are a bit out of scale :).... I think I need to give it a bit more love.

As I mentioned in previous posts. I have modeled a car. It is not based on any particular brand, but rather build up referring to few. I find it easier and faster not following any particular model as I can design it on the go... it also leads me into few problems where I had to remodel bits over and over again until I am happy.
Well.. I am happy with this one.

In the original idea I wanted to do Mini Morris but I realised that it would be too boring.

I have played around to create rather realistic burning piece of paper.
This scene shows the notice or rather plan of killing the agent. In the animatic this shot comes after agent blows up a car that chases him.

This one is still WIP but at least it is something I can show moving rather than posting still frames or modelling previews.

Today after work I started ironing cloth for green screen. Ohh my god... 2 cloths 3 meters by 6 meters is a lot of ironing. My friend took a picture with his mobile so I will post it soon. :)

Other good news, my friend Brendan agreed to lent me his camcorder to shoot green screen. It is a professional equipment therefore I will need to learn how to use it.

Excellent work, man !! You are faster than lots of teams.

The burning paper is still a WIP, but the base of the flames is not that good for now ( compared to the rest of your work). Should be darker I think.

Good luck, I'll follow this thread closely

07-31-2009, 11:31 AM
Thanks Pangloss.
Yeah it is still WIP. I need to burn some paper and take a close look what it looks like in reality. I think it looks OK. Fire took over a night to simulate and another one to render so it is a little pain in the back to redo, but I can alter it in post a little.

I still have soooo much to do with shooting green screen etc. Other people have done it already, therefore I don't really think I am so much ahead of other.

07-31-2009, 04:08 PM
Hey nice job on the FX! Your a pretty damn good generalist.

07-31-2009, 07:58 PM
Thanks man. I am doing pretty much everything.... I enjoy some things more and some less :)

08-01-2009, 07:32 AM
Yay, pierzak blazing the way forth (literally, :p).

As I've said before, your work ethic is really inspiring and it's great to see how much you're accomplishing single-handedly.

I like your car design; a nice mix of the old and new. It partially reminds me of some die cast car toy designs from the old days. :)

Keep up the work man!

Best regards, Varun

Friday after work was very productive... With the help of my wife we managed to iron two 3m x 6m green cloths.
Yep... I am Iron-man.

In the picture you can see myself (red t-shirt) and my wife (dressed in black)

my impression.,

its no dramatic sene, the f14 dodging a missle not a seagull...

good luck

Thanks CGFred,
yep, I know that the jet can move its wings... I did that at first but it looked like a scared brid :) flaping it's wings.... I wasn't convinced with it. I thoguht that, if it doesn't look good for me, It will not look good for the others.
I might try it again.. because I haven't been looking a that shot for a while so I maight get a different impresion.

I have finished shooting green screen... turned out to be more difficult and time consuming that I expected.

I am working on a few shot at the time.
One uploaded here is a briefcase gun. Gun is based on a gun that is in the video game Team Fortress 2.

I have finished rigging the gun. Luckily it behaves just as I want it.
Here is a preview of how it will be animated.

Hi man, I saw your suitcase/weapon animation test and everything is cool except one thing, is my opinion of course, I think the bullet must go out from the gun when the gun is in back position and not when it goes back to its position. The sensation now is that the gun throws the bullet like a baseball player the ball, he goes back for to get impulse and then goes forward for to throw the ball, but here is an explosive reaction and the bullet goes out the barrel from the energy of this explo, in fact the case of the barrel goes back just for to throw the shell outside the barrel, no shell no need to pull back the case and also is more shocking and energetic to the eye. Try it.

08-12-2009, 09:00 AM
You are right about that. The bullet should leave the barrel earlier.
The thing is that it is not a bullet but sth like a grenade.. I am not good with weapons but, I am thinking of it as if the bullet would explode once it reaches its target.

Hey, cool stuff! I like the idea of the briefcase gun. The animation feels a little overly mechanical on it though I think. Maybe a bit snappier, with some recoil as the parts lock into place (and the whole briefcase could rock slightly as each part finishes moving?)

The camera move is a little distracting too.

That overhead city shot is sweet!

08-13-2009, 02:28 PM
Wow, very cool gadget. I sugest that you make moving camera, I think that the camera should follow transformation of the gadget, it will look more interesting. Also as mikebot said, you need some graph playing with those animation curves.

Im very impressed with your ideas and progress.

yeah I agree. I was thinking the other day, you know if the animation is fast enough and enough moving parts no one can tell if it "tranforms" right, like transformers. Basically add in a few exrta flips and rotational pieces, that do nothing other than that. It'll add detail and could be done quickly, if you don't over build it.

I am working on the shot that is not originally in animatic, but I decided to add it. It is a bathroom with the body inside adn bathtub full of blood. Body will be an image that I will camera project onto simple mesh or just use image. I am thinking of doing a version with blood everywhere.. but I am hesitating as bloody scenario is not realy what is going on in the trailer.

In the end this scene will most likely end up as a single flash series of flashes.

Hope you like it.

08-15-2009, 03:55 AM
Whhooo really nice scene, Looks awesome. Some minor notes, maybe make the lights on the wall a tad brighter, the actual geometry not the amount of light, and for some reason the base board catches my eye, maybe just extend it behind the tub.
Really nice though, having blood all over it would be sweet. It would create quite a dramatic visual. If you don't want to do the entire scene with blood, maybe you could give a little splash somewhere so it helps us clue in that the tub is filled with blood.

At least YOUR showing work in progress ;)

nice job man

08-15-2009, 04:10 AM
Thanks Richard3d. I was thinking of a puddle of blood on the floor :)

08-15-2009, 04:41 AM

08-15-2009, 10:25 AM
damn, it looks like you're real agent to cope with all this on your own. Really great work, I hope you will push it to the end. And yes, more blood :)
good luck!

08-15-2009, 10:37 AM
Really Nice! Keep it going!

08-15-2009, 01:28 PM
Thanks guys.
It was a long night last night. I am currently working on few shots at the same time. One with car... pain in the back to render, and birefcase gun shot also renders slow...wrrr. there is a shoting harpoon shot that I shot green screen for all comming along nicely. I will upload some images tomorrow.

This is the birefcase gun test render. As you can see I am recycling quite a lot form the bathroom. This shot is where the animated curtaing will go to.
It renders slooooooow, very slow. Fortunately I am rendering it on separate PC so in will not influence me a lot.
I am not 100% satisfied with this light but... we will see.

08-15-2009, 02:24 PM
hey pierzak, nice progress. i like your interior rendering - if i can help - try to use a fallof in diffuse for cloths shader - it will give more soft look - now its a bit rubber

08-15-2009, 09:16 PM
Its a good day today. I have 6 PCs available for rendering at work. 4 are already rendering bathroom and briefcase shtot. :)
2 more wainting for sth to render.

Uploaded images shot a bit of how was the green screen shoot done.
On 2 images my wife Ewa is putting the make up on my... it wasn't real makeup.. it was just to make skin matte so that it does not shine in the light and reflect green.
Two images with the camera which I have borrowed for 2 days from my friend Brendan. As I do not work on MAC or Final Cut. it than took the whole weekend to convert 25 min that I shot into the usable format. My wife was very helpfull. She was pressing rec button when needed and helped me move the stuff. I didn't have people to help me with the shoot because the shoot was very unexpected. I got the phone call that unfortunately I can't use camera on weekend, as I originally planned, therefore shoot was movet to the next day.

08-16-2009, 03:40 AM
Hey I didn't know You are the agent! :D Curious to see the live footage. Great going.

08-16-2009, 09:01 AM
redCigarette - Thanks :) Yes... I am the agent. It was my plan form the very beginning. There are few reason for that. One is that as animator it is good to do some acting in front of the camera (as I did in school plays). It does help to get into character. Another reason for it is that I have limited access to camera.. and arranging few people and camera on the same day turned out to be a problem.

08-16-2009, 03:05 PM

I know that it is a bit blury, but this is a fast and rapid shot.

Last weekend was one of the busiest weekends ever. I managed to almost finish some shots and others I got rendered.

What do you think?

car explosion looks awesome, keep it up.

08-18-2009, 07:53 AM
What kind of explosion is it - what you wanted to achive ? Becouse in my opinion it doesnt look like a rocket or tank explosion. It's too slow and too short , it has to be more dynamic, and ball of fire should be bigger, fire itselve should live longer.
Have you seen some movie references ?
good luck!

08-18-2009, 08:02 AM
It is just a part of the whole explosion.. here will be huge fireball comming from the inside of the car. I am working on it just now before work :). It is a rocket explosion.

I could imagine it as two explosion one after another with 2 frame offset.. like first rocket blows up and than car's tank.

08-18-2009, 08:36 AM
the way the explosion occurs i thing the car should fly more than it does, in this the car seems like its really heavy for sumthing that small, otherwise the explosion looks great. adding more details to the blast would definitely help, which am sure u'r gonna add later. its getting there.

08-18-2009, 09:10 AM
Looks good, how did you created that explosion? Particles, AfterBurn, FumeFX?

08-18-2009, 09:34 AM
This is in FumeFx, about a year ago or more I did the Workshop on FumeFx with Alan McKay here at CGScoiety. I have used FFX only few times since than.. It is a bit of a recap now :)

I was not sure what look I was after but it became clear after few tests.

The last one ( test 8) is the one I decided to go with.

if you're not feeling 100% on your fume skills. I say go for animation speed of the sim, meaning make it explode at the right speed for the timeing you want, over gettting the "look". Faster is easier to look good harder to sim. If you go faster, what I'm recommending, you can get away with a flash frame explosion (meaning blown out clipped whites for a frame or 3) then you cut it into more smoke. I'd paint touch up those first 3-6 frames anway in photoshop if it's just one explosion.

Also you can go heavy on the debris, which will add detail and cover up the sim somewhat. Debris is easier than fluids, and will give you automatic detail in the fx.

another thing, camera shake on the explosion blurs the sim for the first few frames bluring the true detail anyway. If you're going to do that, do it early to see what you'll need. Also test from the start with the camera angle you plan on using (unless that is the angle already, which is a hard one) a few good forground elements can also help you out, like a well roto'd tree or something, not covering it up but maybe part it a little and it then reacts to the explosion light etc. I donno, what the shot will look like or is planned to be, just some ideas.

08-18-2009, 03:47 PM
Yeah, last one is the best. But it will definitely look better with some smaller flame parts and sparks and longer main explosion time.

08-18-2009, 05:29 PM
Thanks for feedback guys. I will definately not do a slow motion explosion. I am strugling a little bit with few render that were done over the weekend, but mi might have a good update tomorrow morning. I just need to spent another night working on it.

Good luck with your entry.

Thanks man,
Modelling is not that great... I mean it could be better.. I am working a lot after work.. my average bed time is 3 am. Drinkinig a lot of coffee and red bull. Also I am trying to spend as much time on this during weekends. Thank god my wife is OK-ish with that. I have worked during hollidays in Chicago.. and decided that Chicago will be in the trailer and in the end I have taken a couple of days off at work to work on the trailer.
3 months of intensive worki, but I love it.

After it is finished I will be looking like a zombie :)

Forgot to mention that I am using computers at work to render. we have remote access therefore I can set up my renders form home any time.

Hopefully it will not be noticable in animation.

Try using hdr reflection maps instead of raytrace calculations. Works good especially for metals) Turn off soft shadowing ( shadow maps are your friend) lowering sample range in A&D materials (I guess you're using them) makes animated sequence messy and you will want to remake it on higher sample. there are some tricks how to achive blurred reflections with scaline renderer or in editing.
and one more cut off all lens effects in software - put it during editing

And (in 3ds max) keep "scaline enabled" and "fast rastarizer" ON - when making MB can decrease your render time 50%

As I mentioned some time ago. I am working on the car shot. Something like a car chase. Almost like the one in animatic although animatic is quite early and I have changed it quite a lot.

Uploaded image will give you w feel and quality that I am going for.. at the moment it is a bit too dark, althought it is a night shot. I was staring at it for the last 6 hours. Shot is almost finished but not ready to be revealed. It will be followed by the huge explosion if FumeFx.

Everything will be done in 3d apart from the driver and some sparks and muzzle flash.

For the city, I used all the building from the previous shot where camera pans over the streets. Although this time I haven't render in Scanliine renderer. Also applied different textures and put position them facing different direction, added some neon lights (bitmaps) etc.. very low poly lamps and garbage bins as mr_proxise. And 2 sample trees from TreeFarm website.

All creates quite low poly but good look. car goes fast therevore environment is blured.

It is 4 am and I am starting work in 5 hours, but it was worth it :).

Please let me know what you think.

MAN!!! this is looking great!!! the bathroom looks fantastic, and the frame of the car. I like it a lot. I think the explosion of the car looks a bit fake but I know is just a test, more energy is required in the animation and sense of gravity and weight, very important..... Congratulations!!! this will be awesome.

I will now spend most of the time in After Effects. Some of the shots will be all done in AE.
I should have some more updates soon.

08-24-2009, 05:36 PM
very impressive stuff you've got in here. The briefcase is especially great!

The car shot is look good, but one thing catch my eyes. The little flares you've got in there are really 'generic'. I'd try tweaking them to make them more subtle, or tweak their shape to get a more anisotropic shape (altho this might be also 'cliche' because of transformer and star trek :P )

Can't wait to see your upcoming updates! Good luck!

This is a single frame from the shot with the agent and his briefcase. This one is followed by the shot when briefcase opens and the gun comes out.

Agent is shot on green screen. Environment is 3d, rendered with mental ray.

I am working on few shots but there is not much time left, and I will have to loose some of them.

08-28-2009, 05:41 PM

They keying is a little off... slightly jagged around the top. And his colors / focus don't quite match the environment. (picture on wall is more in-focus than character.)

That said - it looks like it's gonna be a cool shot, and my guess is none of those issues would be noticeable at 640x360 in the CGtalk flash player! Hehe. That's what I keep hoping for some of our shots anyway : )

This is the "harpoon shot" as I call it. It will be followed by sliding down on that rope which is WIP

Please let me know what you think.

I think that the tether should be a little bit straighter near the grapple especially after it hits the wall. Right now it looks like the frequency of the tether is a little bit too uniform as its flying through the air. Since it is spinning and flying at high speed, the wavelength and amplitude of the tether should increase slightly over the length, as well as slump very slightly in the center.

Other than that I think it looks pretty good.

08-29-2009, 12:00 AM
Cool, nice dynamic shot. I would get some yellow haze in the sky from all the city lights. And some DOF on the close-up would help.
Look forward to seeing an edit.

08-29-2009, 03:29 PM
Hey looks good man, I like the cracks and debris after it hits the wall. Good work.

08-31-2009, 11:58 AM
Thanks for feedback on the "harpoon" shot.
I am tweaking the shot with a little bit of haze etc

08-31-2009, 11:37 PM
I'm ok with the harpoon's animation, sure everything we all do can be tweeked. I think the main thing is the lighting on the buildings and the sky done.

Sky looks blue/purple on my monitor. I'd go just black, sky photo.

real light has a strong fall off, the buildings feel light with little or no fall off. Can you do a HDRI of a city at night? or something with global illumination? The buildings look textured and modeled well enough. if you dial in the lighting on the buildings & sky I'm move on to the next shot.

Love the collision hit/cracks and fx, nice timing and scale.

08-31-2009, 11:40 PM
just went back over the posts I missed, The suitcase gun looks good! add a little ambient occlusion and done!, right?

Car model looks AWESOME! I want to see more. Looks great, so bad ass! Keep it up!

I can see that people are uploading their final entries. I am still working on mine but everything is going according to the plan so far.

Image above is a title image for my trailer. This is also an image that you will see all over the world on the day of the premiere when this movie gets made... hehe just joking :)

Style is inspired by trailers for Call of Duty World at War, trailers for Rocknrolla, Green Day 21st Century Breakdown cover and the T-shirt I was wearing to work today.
I wonder if some of you can recognize the landmark building.

Agent Kowalski was my first idea for the title and I mentioned it in my first post that it was a wroking title. Now it is final. Like MJ once said "This Is It".
I am hoping to finish my entry tomorrow.
I have few small suprices for you in that trailer :)

09-09-2009, 11:35 PM
we're working at the same speed, in that we're both done with about 0 time left (give or take a day), lol. Well you and I were one of the few entries that tried to show all our work. I got too focused on finishing shots in the last week here with little update but yeah, hope your stuff turned out to your liking. The best part so far has been learning SO much about all these different areas in the process. I know I normally don't finish projects I start if they are too big, this is a first for me of a project of this size.

3 months of solid work, countless sleepless nights, a bit of traveling around the world and hundreds of simulation and rendering hours, lots of coffee, but most of all a lot of great fun, learning new techniques. It all comes down to this video.

This is it. This is really it.

I have finished it and I am super happy with it and with the fact that I made it on time.
I wish making of section was longer because there are few shot that are very good to break down (last shot for example).
It was fantastic time and I hope everyone feels the same.

Please let me know what you think of my trailer.
Good Luck..

Really great work dude! Lots of awesome shots, and action packed! Good luck in the judging.

09-10-2009, 05:38 AM
Wow, That was mind blowing work pierzak. I bacame your fan. I really mean it. I am very new to any forum or contest so far. Now i feel i missed a lot in my carrier. This challenge gives me lot of motivation. All the best you deserve top.

Regarding my upload issue, I have downloaded latest java and installed,
first time i entered the command C:\>java -jar challengeuploader.jar , it was giving some message. when i click ok, it goes to challegeuploader page, but uploading was not completed, even though it says 100%. I tried next time same command, this time without any message it goes to challegenge uploader page and the upload completed.

09-10-2009, 01:21 PM
Haha I loved your full length trailer so much. "Even more explosions," I laughed so hard. Excellent work man, glad you got it done.

09-10-2009, 01:39 PM
Thanks ivanisavich and dhesing. :)
I am glad that you like the trailer. It is good to hear that the last three months turned out to be something people would enjoy.

It is a very good expirience.
I was thinking of making an additional making of video.. just for people on forum. As there was only green screen charcters and the rest is 3D matte painting and photo retuch.
I might just do it for my reel.

I would like to hear what other people think of Agent Kowalski trailer.
What they like or dislike about it.

Now then dude, looking quality! Well pleased with your finished article.
Action good! Explosions good, voice over good, VFX excellent. :) good luck.

Im avin a right pain getting my last shots done. But the extension is a god send  gonna still try and get most of my work done today though i reckon, did you see my first trailer draft? could you check it out and gimme some feedback maybe? cheers.

09-10-2009, 02:48 PM
Hey that's an awesome entry man! You can be really proud of yourself. A lot of neat looking shots. Sorry that I didn't reply to your thread earlier.

Good luck on the judging! It's looking great.

09-10-2009, 02:53 PM
Very cool Dariusz. Congratulations on finishing it with such high quality.

By the way, di you all notice that the deadline just got extended? They are giving everyone, including those of us that already submitted, three more days. Read the FAQ thread for more details.

Juan Carlos

09-10-2009, 04:00 PM
Juan Carlos thanks for telling me about the deadline. It is wierd because if you look when I uploaded my final video... well today at 5 am. ehh... I am going out for the weekend therefore I don't think I will do any work on my animation... there are few areas where I could tweak this or that.. so perhaps I will do that tonight.. but I can't do anything major.

Shout out to every one on forum... Please support my entry and convince judges that it is the best, as I really really really need a new workstation to do more awesome work.
Thanks :)

09-10-2009, 05:45 PM
Really nice work, watching your making of, makes me realize that's a better making of then me just talking over some of the pre-viz.

I hate when they extend deadlines on things like this. It helps people who wouldn't finish and basically punishes people who did finish on time. Lame. There's already stiff competition hard to say what the judges will be looking for. I doubt we'd convince them one way or another.

One story point, your agent throws the suit case in the other room but there is no one in that room/no reason why he didn't just walk in and shoot that door in. Loved the timing, I don't have any of those ramp timing shots. Looks bad ass.

With your skills you put that effort into a freelance gig you can buy yourself a computer easily, with half the energy. Good luck, great job, and thanks for your comments on my entry!

09-10-2009, 05:48 PM
Spisales sie! wyszlo naprawde super!
Coprawda mogles sie wstrzymac jeszcze te 3 dni i cos podopieszczac ;) ale i tak jest naprawde kawal dobrej roboty.

masz duze szanse

09-10-2009, 09:51 PM
Cool! Cool!!
Very good job Pierzak!!!
I like very much also the "freeze" graphic!! very well done!!

09-11-2009, 02:23 PM
Nice work men! Congratulations on finishing. I like your editing and comic-style camera work.
Audio and voices are perfect.

09-11-2009, 03:22 PM
I really like your entry. You have some really nice scenes. I don't think you should have done the true lies scenes as I feel like your own stuff is a lot better because it's more original. I do think you should credit the movie as your scenes are very similar. I really like the style that you have given to the whole thing. Overall It's really well put together and fun to watch.

09-11-2009, 04:02 PM
Thanks of all kind comments.
Juupiii. My entry reached over 10,000 views. That is a lot of views... I have probably veiwed it 9900 times myself.
I am very happy that you like the trailer. It was a lot of fun to make as it is to watch (hopefully).

GerR I am glad that it made you laugh. I was hoping for that reaction.

destruct007. Thanks for your feedback. At first agent was to use Xray Glasses to see enemy behind the wall like I did in animatic. I decided not to do that shot and polish others.

Staszek. Dzieki. W dodatkowym czasie zrobie pare malych zmian i poprawek i podkrece dzwiek tu i tam. Nie moge sie doczekac waszej animki.

Richard3d thanks for reminding me about it. You are the life saver. I totaly forgot to list inspirations.
In the rules you can read "However, failure to correctly credit all inspirations, third party works, team members, actors, etc will result in automatic disqualification."

Thanks for putting up screen grabs from True Lies becasue I realy didn't know if you mean those two shot or shots with Arnold Schwarzenegger riding a horse in the lift. :)

I will credit that at the end of the video along with other films and cartoons tshirts and music albums that I was inspired with.. It will be quite a list I suppose including Juan Carlos's entry :)

At first I wanted the agent to fight on water, land and air, but while rewriting storyboard I ended up deldeting water shots. True Lides shot was to be combined with boat. Someone shoothing jet form the boat.Than it just didn't make sense to have boat out of nowhere in the trailer.

09-11-2009, 08:35 PM
I forgot to tell you that the last shot of the trailer is inspired by a movie "Wanted".
I just wanted to make that clear before someone remindes me about it. It is the last shot of DVD trailer for "Wanted".

09-11-2009, 08:53 PM
Well done, Pierzak! That's a ton of great work for such a short period of time. Congrats on finishing a great film.

09-11-2009, 11:58 PM
Yeah, congrats man! It's a fun piece. I'm digging the motion graphics.

"From the creator who works when everyone else sleeps"

Anyway congrats again.

Thanks saeDubai, adib, mikebot and rsluman.
I am very happy with the general response to the trailer.
Yes it was a lot of work and sleepless nights. I did enjoy bed and pillow a lot last weekend. :) I am sure everyone did :)

nice short...Kowolaski eh?....form the madagascar squad?

nice short...Kowolaski eh?....form the madagascar squad?
Yes and No :) I was watching a lot of Pinguins of Madagascar when competition started, althought it was the fact that Kowalski is the most common surname in Poland that made me go with it. It is as popular as Smith in US.. remember "Mr and Mrs Smith"? :)

09-15-2009, 12:33 AM

oh i get it...i didn't know that....still...is a cool name

09-15-2009, 01:39 AM
nice work man, i like your areal city shots, i know how hard those are to make good.. think some of your explosions/car flip stands out a bit unfortunately, rest looks sweet, loove the suitcase cannon, sweet shot!

09-15-2009, 02:09 PM
yeah...your work is just perfect...but you could do this and that...also you can do that...and I think you can do this but anyway I think you deserve the prize!!!

09-15-2009, 03:00 PM
yeah...your work is just perfect...but you could do this and that...also you can do that...and I think you can do this but anyway I think you deserve the prize!!!

Thanks man, I appreciate that.
Yeah I agree that I could do bit of this and that and even more that, but with the time we had, even I am pleasantly supriced with what it ended up to looking like. I seriously don't think I could make it better than it is and meet the deadline. I would probably have to quit work, instead of taking days off :), but I like my work.
If you break it down into single different shots, you will see that technicaly there is a lot going on. All the green screen, cameras, lights and than keying and than 3d scenes, rendering, simulations camera matching.... ooh man. It might have been easier to do it all in 3d, half of that toruble would be gone.
I am glad that you enjoyed watching it. :)

09-15-2009, 05:14 PM
Hey Dariusz, you did it and did it very well man!!! The London bridge shot is great, the renders of the room with the briefcase and the anim of it are very good too. Very good job man, congratulations, sure you had a nice time doing all that stuff, that is the most important thing, to have fun and I can see you did. Hope to know from you in the near future, I will follow your path.

09-15-2009, 05:43 PM
impressive job for a man alone! Good luck in the contest :) !

09-15-2009, 07:38 PM
good job ,it looks good enough
I see a lot of work done here ,some things doesnt look convincing but overall its zajebiście (translation - good) ..
I really like that "high" shot of the city and its box modeling-texturing !:applause:
Wish that you used some tuned polonez car

09-17-2009, 09:47 AM
Thanks for all the good comments.
I have created extended Making Of for you guys (and for my reel). I have added few new cool shots like panning above the city or hotel explosion. Hope you'll like it.
Here is the link:

PeterR. I am glad that you like it. I didn't think about Polonez, although I did consider good old Mini for UK shots.

JsGuillemette. Thanks man. It was a great learning experience. They were quite a few techniques that I tried for the first time.

CGIsrael. I am really happy with what you said. It was a lot of fun to work on. I hope that there will be more cool stuff coming form me after this competition. Hopefully more vfx.

09-17-2009, 02:51 PM

Hey mate. That's alot of work you pulled off! Congratulations and best of luck with the judging!

10-10-2009, 01:15 AM
Congratulations to the winners.

10-11-2009, 12:05 AM
Hey Mate,

It was a great fun challenge with you and whatever happened please continue the great work. Your entry was honestly good. Hope to see you soon. :)

10-15-2009, 04:55 PM
Shit man, I hope you are not too sad, and for sure you will be a serious opponent everytime in the future. You did a wonderful job, nobody can tell you the opposite because you did it with all your heart and soul. That's what I told you about to have fun doing it, that worth everyting.

A big hug!

10-16-2009, 11:41 PM
Thanks CGIsrael and redCigarette
I appreciate you guys saying that. I am working on some great stuff at the momet. Hopefully I will be able to post it somewhere online.
