A first concept for the spy.

06 June 2009, 01:27 AM

Looking forward to more...

06 June 2009, 09:00 AM
nice looking concept. It has the post apocalyptic feel :)

06 June 2009, 02:00 PM (

A first concept for buildings and structures.

06 June 2009, 04:55 PM (

A first idea for a bad guy (not final).

06 June 2009, 05:01 PM
damn you're good at drawing, love the style. Nice concepts. I like the spys mask, simple but interesting and different enough from other similar robot heads.

06 June 2009, 12:15 PM

06 June 2009, 04:35 PM (

Just a funny concept of a enemy robot.

Absolutely awesome work!
Beatiful concept and color mood!

07 July 2009, 03:43 AM
Cool style Aurelien! :)

I'm looking forward to seeing what that boxy enemy robot does; those laser sights are a great idea!

Best regards, Varun

07 July 2009, 09:48 AM (

I still work on it.
I will upload animated render soon.

07 July 2009, 05:35 PM
looking really good! Are you animating yet? or just getting things into place first?

07 July 2009, 09:46 AM
I've started animating characters but i'm not used to do this kind of work. It's the first time i rig a character so i work slowly.

07 July 2009, 08:08 PM
Looking good, I like the color pallet.

07 July 2009, 04:12 PM
Yeah I wanted to add that. Your color palette is really good! We should work together on the next one. Just so great stuff, really like it, looks pro.

08 August 2009, 08:17 AM
Looks good, really fine lighting work plus concepts are so cool. Need to see more

08 August 2009, 09:00 AM
ValenUA is right. Your entry started good but we haven't heared from you in ages. What's up?

08 August 2009, 01:19 AM
All looks great... just want to see more! What's the story?

08 August 2009, 09:56 AM
looks good. I like concept.

08 August 2009, 11:25 AM (

WOW... I did not think that my work was so esteemed!
So here is the storyboard, maybe it is not really understandable so i give you the script with the third page.

08 August 2009, 11:28 AM (

here the second page.

08 August 2009, 11:54 AM (

here the third page.

In a not so far future.
An alien artifact has been found in the Siberian desert, and it's now stored in a military base in the middle of the frozen desert. A member of the EU special forces have been sent for steal this alien technology, but it can't be so simple...

I know it looks like the script of a Steven Seagull film but it is not serious. I try to mix humor and action, that's why i use old action movie cliche.

08 August 2009, 12:30 PM (

Software: 3ds max,After Effects,mental ray

Here the two firsts scene of my movie.

The introduction have to be changed.
Some part are previsualisation and some part are not finished, there is a lot of things to fix.

All critics are really welcome.

08 August 2009, 12:34 PM
Wow, that's some update!

Your cinematography is excellent and I love the mood / atmosphere of the lighting. Some of the walks and runs could use a little more weight but overall it's looking superb, and there's tons of it!!

Well done...

08 August 2009, 02:02 PM
Very nice. It is the most completed entry so far.
You have put a lot of work into it.
That agent is very cute.
You still have a lot of time to finish the story.

08 August 2009, 03:31 PM
You know what wanders me... is that you made it so fast... its a bit weird. I mean... looking at your forum and when you submitted concept art.. than no updates or animatic...and than after 17 days almost final renders seems very very fast... too fast... I am not saying that you haven't done it yourself or that you had it started or partiality done before competition started, but it just surprices me a lot.. and it is with sound fx also... sth smells wierd in here.
Lets not think about how much time it would take to design ,model, animate or even set up lighting... only rendering could take more than 17 days... all different passes, vfx etc. Unless with renderfarm
Tell us the secret please.
Your work looks very good and it has very nice story and design.
Well done.
Looking forward to the finished piece I am sure that within last weeks you will create at leest twice as much as you have done so far.
Good luck :)

08 August 2009, 04:37 PM

I can't believe it either! Not that I smell foul play but there is a whole hell of a lot of work in that. The fx of him hitting the snow, has a lot of subtlies in it. I can't believe you didn't add more updates as shots came together! The explosions, etc. I'm freaking happy when I get one shot half done! Yours is so long, SO long already and basically done.

Is this a team entry? Are you all by yourself? It's great work really. Either you are a huge talent or you are a team. Either way the entry is really good. Where do you work? How long have you been doing this?

If you are doing this by yourself I am 100% serious I want to hire you right now! (well $$$ depended lol)

08 August 2009, 04:45 PM
the only thing I found on you was this:

I can see the similar styles. I don't think it's crazy impossible. I'm just skocked and impressed even if you were a seasoned pro. No joke. I can see why someone can be suspicious. that early rendering was already final, in no time.

the description says in english
work d' student carried out in 2nd year, by Aurélien Rantet and Cédric Launay, it is also necessary to thank Laura Marqueyssat and Jerome Perez (nonfinal version the sound recording are not made yet)

So you are a student working hard on this (just you?). possible. you have a bright career ahead of you.

08 August 2009, 05:59 PM
I bet this is a team entry or sth like year project at the university, pretending to be an individual.

08 August 2009, 06:01 PM
Sweet, nice job. Going to be a really nice final piece. You show a lot of mood and character, everything goes together nicely. For me, up until he gets into the base could use more refinement but for a WIP it's looking really great.

08 August 2009, 06:02 PM
LOLOLOLOL...seriously that was something...can`t wait for the whole movie :)

08 August 2009, 06:13 PM
I can only agree in saying that the hours can't add up. And for a student/jr level guy it's astounding. Probably has to be a team, and just didn't say that yet. And you're right that first image shortly after entry was basically final with even the fx of the coffee in there.

by 7/10 you already modeled, textured, light, rigged, animated (motion blured frame), matte painted the BG, ALREADY did the fx on the cofffee cup, the laser from the robot eye, all the atmopherics. All the office modeled minutiua... to final render! ...that's true. It's like you already had THAT clear a picture of what you wanted to do? Every one else was still story boarding.

Maybe you have some 'esplaining to do

EDIT: Just for reference:
by 7/15 Staszek Marek, probably the best all around guy in the competition, has
done his previs + animatics, and modeled a head!

08 August 2009, 08:14 PM
I work alone on this project, it's not a team work. If i work that fast is just because i work a lot! Maybe too much! I wanna work seriously on this project, to make a good film.
When i work, i target one objective ,i leave nothing to chance and i stay the course, i don't spend time to setup things randomly and i get along to use only tips i know. That way i can work faster.
My render time are not very long because i don't use advanced effects like indirect illumination, hair&fur or things like that. Maybe that's why i work faster than people who use plug-in or things which takes a lot of time to setup correctly.
If i have not uploaded animatic on the precedent scenes it's just because i was thinking no body care about it! But apparently not. So, for the next scenes i will up more previs and animatics, i sweare.
To answer the questions of Destruct007: I'm studying in France, I'm now in 3rd year and i study 3D since last September but not full time, i also study web-design and advertising. The video you have found on youtube ( is a team project we've done a few month ago. If you don't recognize tmy style i's just because, on this challenge, i try to do something new, and also because it was a team project, i wasn't alone.
So i repeat myself, i work alone on this CG challenge.
Thanks for all your comments, i read all of them attentively.

08 August 2009, 08:20 PM
well props dude. awesome work!

08 August 2009, 09:29 PM
So did you have your first sequence completely done in one month? The first render was posted on July 10th and It's obviously screen grabs from the final animation. People are taking note because the entry is really strong, there are a lot of professionals who know how long things take as they have been working in cg for many years. Maybe you could elaborate on a time line breakdown of your shots to help clarify your entry.
Really great work though, you should definitely be proud of it.

08 August 2009, 09:56 PM

That looks great! Colors, camera, humor, sound .. everything seems to work perfectly here.
Looking at your storyboards I assume you are done with 2/3rd of the film. That's some speed dude!

Would be following this from here on.

If i have not uploaded animatic on the precedent scenes it's just because i was thinking no body care about it! But apparently not.

LOL that still gets me. "I didn't think anyone cared." You're new to cgtalk but damn it's in the directions of the challenge, show your work, people care.

also you call your final render "first render" on 7/10 post. You should see everyone else in cg's first renders, lol.

The issue is this too, we don't see a HUGE chunk of work in progress. Infact we see 0 work in prorgess. Concept art to litterally final animation. very litterally final animation screen grabs.

When I model a lot in one night I'm even nervious people will say "no way!" you already had that model! so I try to show as much as possible every step of the way. You have a lot of buildings, sets/locations, lots of models that we never even saw in progress or at all until the final. What are we supposed to think?
No work in progress, none. That's in the rules, you HAVE to show work in progress. Final animation screen grabs are not.

Edit: I'm unbiased in that you're solo, I'm in a team, we're not even competing. I'm just saying... pierzak has a point.

08 August 2009, 10:52 PM
what stinks is that when you show your work and progress is protects you and makes others see how you did it what you learned what you did right and wrong. Now that you have shown no work in progress, there's no way for you to prove that you haven't spent the past year + on this project. You can go back to old files and show that, but that could be from 6 months ago. At this point there's no way to show or prove that this was done for this competition not school work.

Good news is that this will look good on your reel, bad news is it might not qualify for this competition. I don't doubt you worked on it and you are talented. I doubt you worked on it for only 5 1/2 weeks.

You say you are not using plug-ins? How did you do the explosion? It looks a LOT like afterburn for MAX. We don't even know what software you are using! We know nothing, except it looks too good to be true, and you are a student. What do you think we should think? I cannot do what you have done in that amount of time, people I respect as very good I don't think could do it.

08 August 2009, 01:40 AM
I'm really disappointed. I'm new on this forum, this is the first serious competition i do and the first critics i receive says I'm a cheater.
I work practically full time on this project.
I'm sorry, i have not upload a lot of work in progress. And now you say I'm cheating and i can not prove you're wrong just because i wasn't thinking it was necessary! If i not upload plenty of works, it's just because i think it was not good enough ( when i see work like that, i just try to show the best i can do and if i do not explain a lot of things it's because of my bad English. So if you want to kick me for that, so do it.
But give my one reason to cheat like you say i do! I'm not here to winning prices or to say I'm the faster CG artist, I do this challenge for know what is worth my work.

08 August 2009, 01:53 AM
I think everyone needs to take a breath and a step back. destruct007 and pierzak, you guys are not the judge and jury here. The challenge judges will be the ones to decide if the provided backup work is sufficient or not. We will not tolerate users hijacking an entrant's competition thread because you believe he's not being honest about his work.

Aurel0988 HAS provided some WIP images. Personally I'd like to see more WIP images, but that is not up to you guys to decide. He's not broken any rules as yet.

Just take it easy people.

08 August 2009, 01:55 AM
thank you for the clarification Kendhar. you are faster than me.

i am sure Aurel0988 will show us an amazing making off.

let's go back to the Challenge guys !

08 August 2009, 04:44 AM
Dude don't listen to us. We're not haters. Try to think of it as a big compliment. We think your entry is so good, we can't believe it. Keep it up and blow us away.

08 August 2009, 09:52 AM
Thanks to khendar and Visionmaster2 to calm things down.
I promise i will make a big making of. And for the rest of the challenge i will daily update the forum thread.
And i swear, I'm alone on this project and i haven't started working before the competition. Just tell me how to prove it to you.
Now i go back to work.

08 August 2009, 10:56 AM
Just upload making off and what you are working on next and we are all good.

08 August 2009, 08:31 PM
Aurel0988 nice work!

I like directoring work most. Editing is realy close to finish in those shots. Rendering is simple and nice , fits to this style. Fx are realy good.Animation timing ect are very good. In general you did great, all process of compose all elements, plan - lot of done in short time.

Crossed my mind the same as destruct007.. but like other say its not our call.

There is realy some nice entrys, but remmember that some of are begginers wich want to learn something and not beginners too. Its also filozofy of contest like this.. So if you could show some process of creating before than maybe someone could learn something and do better entry and than is more fun!

08 August 2009, 10:15 PM
Aurel, I really enjoy your concept design, lighting, and composition...your animation needs a bit work but overall good stuff. Feel like you need to be given a break. This is a competition not school. Last time I checked......there are prizes to be won. For all I know you could be a grinder. I had friends in school that where absolute beasts. I mean, they would grind like no tomorrow spitting out shots like nothing. It's possible to do what you did in 3 weeks, if you had the time. Hold your head man. Good Luck.

08 August 2009, 04:01 PM (

Here is the the factory.

08 August 2009, 05:41 PM
i have no bloody idea how you managed to do it! it's a huge project and you did it perfectly.. I hope you will finish whole thing on time! I keep my fingers crossed, one of my favourite here!
good luck

08 August 2009, 09:59 PM (

here is a first preview of the lightning, i still working on it.

08 August 2009, 10:24 PM
Looking good.
What software are you working with?

08 August 2009, 10:33 PM
I working with 3ds max 2009 and render with Mental Ray.

08 August 2009, 09:08 AM
Everything looks awesome, the only crits is about agent walk animation, it looks a little bit weird more like he is sliding rather than walking, imho. Anyway good work .

08 August 2009, 10:33 AM
OK, thanks for your help, i'll take care of that.

08 August 2009, 01:52 PM
Hmm, all the purported "issues" put aside, this really is a great entry. The animation is a bit strange, in that the agent's motion when he's actually covering some distance seems a bit odd, while his other movements and the overall timing seems quite spot on. But seeing as this is pretty consistent throughout, it kind of melds into the agent's personality and seems to actually work okay overall... I think it'd be far from ideal to go back and tweak everything at this stage.

Great job with the camera work and concept and rendering styles, all looking very cool. The scene with the huge robot sparing only the agent and attacking the soldiers was truly hilarious. Thumbs up from my end.

Keep it up and look forward to updates.

Best regards, Varun

08 August 2009, 09:05 PM (

here is the alien artifact and factory robots. I still working on the animation and lightning.
seaDubai, thanks for your comment. I'll try to keep that in my mind for the animation of the next scene, but i don't really know how to fix it. If I've got the time i will try to work on the animation of the previous scene.

08 August 2009, 04:53 PM (

Here a preview of the 4th scene, it's 3ds max render modified with photoshop, i use it for found the right colors.

08 August 2009, 11:47 AM
Hello to all.

Really nice work Aurelien !

Now, some words for all people who have doubts and questions about Aurélien’s work :
I’m one of Aurelien 3D teacher. I know him well and I can swear on whatever you want that his NOT a cheater !

All you can see here is his work, all made by himself, alone. He would not be betray by his fellows during a party, I would believed he just disappeared during summer. In fact, he was working on the spy project.

Aurelien is not able to handle a job at just 50%, not even 100% ! 300% is his way, no less !

He was by far the best of his class last year, and the points he loose were not due to his work, but on the way to present it ! But I think you already understood that it’s his main problem ;-)

Aurelien, I said it to you many time ‘L’argumentaire est aussi important que l’image ! Et c’est souvent le seul moyen de comprendre ton travail’.

Indeed, I’m a little bit disappointed by your silence. You could send just a little mail to say you were doing this challenge. I would tell you how to handle it. A good competitor for CGChallenge have to post at least once a week at minimum, and for every step of the project. And a very good competitor has to help other competitors by posting comments on their works. I’m afraid you lose points by forgetting this rule. CGtalk is a forum, not a battle field.

Last little thing. I would love to see Aurelien directly in Master Degree instead of 3rd year. I’m going to ask director of school monday. If it’s not possible, I would like to talk to you, Aurelien, about what you should do now.

And again : Really nice work ! I love it !

08 August 2009, 01:03 PM
Looking very nice. I think this one will probably win.

That being said, some of the animation of the main character is stiff and blocky. I think mainly when he takes footsteps his animation looks unpolished...mostly the character doesn't look balanced and the animation is jumpy. But I really like the design of the whole thing and the story is intriguing.

Best of luck finishing your project!

08 August 2009, 03:34 PM
thanks for the replay François (Youpi),
I was wishing one of his teachers would write on here. I felt like it was possible for him to be working like he has... but he's fallen back into his old ways again. Posted an animation of what he was working on, posted a few models, and then again silence. Well hopefully he listens to you. I feel like we might not hear from him again until another huge update or the end. At least we know more about his story. Thanks.

Aurelien, you have such a great sense of color, I hope you are able to finish all that you want in the next 2 weeks. Good luck.

08 August 2009, 10:49 AM
hi everyone,
I don't really know how to reply to these comments, I don't used to show a work until it's perfect but maybe it's the wrong way to work.
Sorry, I don't have post a lot of update this week, it's ibecause i still working on the animation, as Ivanisavic says, the main character motion is still weird.

you're a funny guy, next time make it you plus an animator and you'll rule the world. I'm really happy with your progress, 2 weeks left, is there only one more sequence? The one with that big robot or ship thing?

08 August 2009, 03:15 PM
Hi Aurélien,
I'm really impressed by how you skill fast in animation! I can't wait to see the final result and speak of your work with you, maybe at the next "Jeudi bordelais", I'll be there with François and other people you know :)

To other member,
Hi, I'm Sébastien, the other 3d teacher of Aurélien and I can confirm that he do all this himself, all impossible to do this could look like for you.

So keep up working, Aurel, I like it :bounce:

Ryo Aka Sébastien

08 August 2009, 06:20 PM
There is 2 sequences left, for the one with the alien ship, i start the animation, and the last one will be the punchline of the story, so i don't want to show it before the whole movie is complete, i have already modeled, textured and lighted this one.
And i will redone the introduction, it will be a kind of slide-show with picture who mix photo, 3d and 2d.

How long are you planning to make your entry?

09 September 2009, 08:50 AM
Keep going man - perfect mood and atmosphere! Everything feels exactly right, like it belongs all in the same world - that's not an easy thing to achieve, well done!

09 September 2009, 09:43 AM
Thanks for your comment Duncs !
And sorry Pierzak, but i don't really understand your question. If you want to know how long is my film, it's 4:25 . If you speak about when i will finish it, I'm now rendering the lasts shots, so it will not be so long. If i don't have answered correctly, just tell me.

09 September 2009, 09:57 AM
Thanks my question wasn't clear. I ment how long is the animation. So it is 4:25. Thanks.

Not sure if you meant to spell it that way or if it was a mistake, but I think you meant
Run for the Artifact

I don't think you are supposed to use commercial music. Anybody correct me if I'm wrong.

Looks really good though. Animation could still be smoothed out some. Needs more weight to things. Not that there is time now though. Really like the lighting and colors you used.

Well done.

09 September 2009, 08:29 PM
Thank for your comment Richard. In fact, "artefact" is the French way to spell it. But you're right, i think I'm going to write it like you said.
For the music i'm not sure too. I've seen people who use commercial music on the previous challenge. I hope i haven't got to change it.

09 September 2009, 08:32 PM
gosh that was awesome! Amazing job you did there! Some of the character anim could use some work, but the amount of overall work largely compensate! The lighting and visual style is simply amazing.

Good job!

I don't think CGSociety or specifically the CGChallenge is a recognized venue for the disregard of copyright law. Check the Collab forum for posts by musicians willing to help with your music needs. Or find some music that is usable without having to hire a lawyer.

This was taken from the FAQ forum. link is at the top. Not trying to make it hard for you, just trying to help you out, so you don't run into issues later on.
As for the title, maybe just spell it all in English or all in French.

Again, really nice job.

Next time, I should read the FAQ.
Thanks for your help Richard.

This is very strong and cleverly made! You made a strong entry this. I'd use last 7 days to work on editing. There are moments you could realy improve but I'm guessing it's not a final word from you.
Keep it up and good luck

I like the idea, modeling, rendering and compositing. But the animation seams to be a little stiff. You need to make it flow.

Good luck

need to register, but it's free.

I agree about the animation, but I don't think you should change that now I only got three suggestions that would make you film a bit more awesome than it already is.

1. In the beginning of the movie, when we see the spy in the woods, looking up at the fort/castle/whatever-secret-base-it-is, I think it would be good if you removed or turned down the sound of his feet touching the grass. It seems a bit unatural.

2. Near the end, when the spy has just lost the artifact, you could make the clip a little bit longer and shorten the fade-to-black-effect. it seems a bit too fast to comprehend what is happening.

3. In the ending. It would be awesome if you make the vacuum-sound stay troughout the credits till the ending.

Hope this will help you!

Software: 3ds max,After Effects,Photoshop

I haven't really worked on this since the last post. I know there is still a lot of things to improve but, i just can't work on it anymore, it's gonna kill me. This year gonna be really busy, i must have some rest. I know the animation look still unpolished , in fact it's the first time i animate a character like that, so i don't really know how to improve it. I know I'm going to disappoint some people but i think I'm done with this project, maybe i will rework on it when i will have more experience with animation.
Good luck everyone!

I love your work !

Despite what you mantioned "unpolished animation" this is a very strong and well put piece of animation.

09 September 2009, 12:19 PM
By far the best. Good luck in the competition.

Looks like a winner to me!

Congratulations on finishing - good luck with the judging

Nicely done. I really like it.
Your timing is really good, story has nice mix of action and comedy. Some things are rough around the edges, especially the character anim, but still this is really great.
Congrats on finishing.

Really great animation! Looking at it again, I think that the characteranimation actually contributes well to the style of the movie, which is kinda cool. The overall design and especially the lightning and texturing is quite professionally done. Good job!

HI Aurel!
Very compliments! Amazing and funny job!!!
Beautifull color palette and beautifull concept sketch also!!!

Hi. I realy like your animation. It was pleasure to watch it. For time given it is great piece of solid work. Perhaps some moments are predictable (error during hacking walker, ending), but I think it is impossible to do something completly unpredictable. Damn - even on Pixar movies sometimes I know what happens next ;). So, great work - again. Good luck.

Complete and funny, your work is on my top! good luck for the last stage!

09 September 2009, 12:13 AM
Well done. Congratulation on finishing on time.
I wish you could tweak some of the animation when dedline was extended (for example when character walks down the stairs or just before that or when he gets error message, or aliens at the end are a bit robotic) Still it is a nice animation.
I think that If you would have made it half as long, but polish the animation and some other bits, it would be better that sacrificing it ti show the whole story.
I would like to see the alien robot unfold like transformer rather than just appear.
In the end it is nice to watch as a whole.

Fantastic job!!! one of my favourites for sure. The character and his personality are great, the sense of humor is very important and you did it very good, great ending. The look of the animation sometimes remember me to the CLONE WARS animation, with some tricks for not to take too much in render but efficienly solved. Animation award is yours man!!!

Everything seems to work perfectly here. This is by far the most complete work in this challenge. Good luck with the judging mate.

As usual my favourite entry comes from France. Love your movie. Amazing how one person can do this much by himself? I think what stands out is that talent ends up showing in your work, and a team isn't even needed. Better alone than in bad company? Colours, style, animation, humour (Very funny!) storyline, camera shots. Congrats.

10 October 2009, 10:04 PM
I loved this piece, especially the witty twist at the end. Bravo.

10 October 2009, 03:51 PM
Wow! Excellent story. Excellent animation and design. Great ending. My fav!

Thanks for the inspirational work. Brilliant!

10 October 2009, 11:36 PM
Thoroughly enjoyable. There wasn't a bit of this I didn't like, I can't believe it. I am so critical of things and yet I had a rush of happiness that I was not in the least disappointed by this. Even the ending was not totally predictable, and made me laugh out loud.

I loved the seeming ineptitude of the main character, though he finally got the job done. Seeing the things that he didn't see was hilarious. He was almost like the Inspector Clouseau of the robotic agent world. (btw, is he a robot, or just wearing equipment?)

Great work, hope to see more from you!

Oh yes, Congratulations on the win! Well deserved!!
