Latest Update: Work In Progress: Big Bad 001 (

06 June 2009, 04:45 AM (

So I think I might go with an Inspector Gadget type entry. And here's my casting for the Inspector and the Gadgetmobile. Obviously it's a modern take on the idea

06 June 2009, 09:22 AM (

First bit of progress on the GT by Citroen which will be transformed eventually into my Gadgetmobile of sorts...

06 June 2009, 09:27 AM

The dude looks a bit like you, how funny. : )
Nice car.

06 June 2009, 11:03 AM
I would have said brothers.

06 June 2009, 02:24 PM
lol...i guess i do look like him a bit......although at the moment i look a bit more like him as tony stark after several weeks in an afghani cave (ie unshaven and messy hair)...little update in just a sec

06 June 2009, 02:34 PM (

Just a bit more done on the front of the car. Will start to flesh out the sides tomorrow I think.

06 June 2009, 04:53 AM (

Filled in a few more details on the front and started working on the sides.

06 June 2009, 07:06 AM (

Added a roof, mostly finished off the sides and started on the rear of the car.

06 June 2009, 01:05 PM
Can't go too wrong with the go-go-gadget inspiration!, good luck!

06 June 2009, 05:25 PM
Beautiful work so far! Best of luck on the contest

06 June 2009, 07:19 AM
Hey Rob. Just thought I'd stop by and leave a note. Quick progress as usual I see :D. Man that is one sweet car. Can't wait to see that thing as the gadget mobil. Keep us posted!

06 June 2009, 07:55 AM (

starting on the back now

06 June 2009, 07:57 AM
@JHarford: thanks, it's quite lucky that I'd just watched some Inspector Gadget clips on youtube when I found this new

@Kerem: thanks

@RageOfAges: thanks, i can't wait to turn it into the gadgetmobile...

06 June 2009, 11:04 AM (

06 June 2009, 11:08 AM

06 June 2009, 11:48 AM
Wosh ! you run fast paul !

The citroŽn looks already cool !
It's gonna be a great entry !

I stay tuned !

06 June 2009, 11:57 AM
Great start! Nice car and nicely modeled. Looking forward to more updates :)
Thinking about having a car in my scene too :P All awesome super agents must have a car at least:P

06 June 2009, 01:31 AM
@nandlaskar: thanks

@gpepper: i always tend to start fast and the slow down to a point where i don't'm going to try and change that this time around though and push through tuill the finish...

@dboydesign: thanks, the thing is i'm making this car but i don't really know how i'm going to incorporate it into a scene

there'll be some more updates today, i want to get the main bulk of the car finished and maybe start on Mr RDJ's head.

06 June 2009, 01:48 AM
going fast indeed - best of luck :)

06 June 2009, 03:20 AM
Nice progress on the shell of that there automobile. Looking perfect so far. We missed you at the end of the HMC. Looks like you've moved onto this, we all understand. Anyway, good luck, I look forward to following this.

06 June 2009, 10:48 AM
well this sucks....

somewhere in the last 2 hours of working on the rims for my car I have unknowingly deleted my car...and had been saving several times without realising...

*dreams shattered*

so after about an hour of swearing and moping I'm about to go and start all over again....maybe this time i'll do it better...who still sucks....

i'll put up a pic of the wheel in a minute, it's quite cool and was a tricky bugger to model...

back to the drawing board now to redo over 20 hours worth of work...

06 June 2009, 10:51 AM
Ahhh Paul that sucks, mate. Good thing it's now, though, and not a month from now. Let me be the first a$$h@le to suggest you save incrementally after every solid piece you model. It's happened to everyone, but keep your chin up and you should be back on track shortly.

06 June 2009, 11:08 AM (

the wheel that caused me to accidentally delete everything else....hmph

06 June 2009, 12:17 PM
Oh man, bummer! So sorry to hear it. Also, and sorry if you've already done this, check every folder near your scene files folder. I have no idea how but sometimes I will apparently drag a file instead of open or something. I don't know, but I know that the past 2 or 3 times I thought I lost 5 or more hours of work, I found the file sitting in the "data" or "fur" folder.

Regardless, good luck, very sorry to hear about the loss.

06 June 2009, 12:28 PM
Aww man, that sucks, your car was shaping up great! You'll probably do better the second time around, but it sucks to loose all that hard work... :surprised Incremental save is your friend! :D Anyway, keep at it!

06 June 2009, 01:40 PM (

Okay so I've started the rebuild, and I think it is actually coming out better than before, it just seems alot sharper and cleaner than before....i dunno...

maybe some higher power was just telling me "do it again!"

06 June 2009, 03:29 AM
barring any more disasters, i want to try and get my car back to where it was yesterday, before the 'incident' (as it will now be referred to)

so look for several updates over the next 8-10 hours....

06 June 2009, 04:30 AM (

Starting on the sides

06 June 2009, 06:10 AM (

more progress

06 June 2009, 07:28 AM (

added the roof and windscreen/windows...which i didn't actually do last time...

06 June 2009, 07:38 AM
Lol Paul. Be wary of Bionic implants and Developmental drugs which enhance the body and mind to super-human properties. You still need sleep. Where are you getting all this time? do you live in a pocket dimension where time has a different meaning? Hehe. looking good. You're almost back to where you were.

06 June 2009, 10:41 AM (

Almost completely recovered now....and after working on this for around 7.5 hours straight I'm going to stop for don't worry guys i'm not losing sleep, its only 8:40pm here...

06 June 2009, 11:16 AM
Too bad you lost your files, but look like you recovered that pretty quick, and it looks better. Good job. Some sick rims on that one, looking forward for more updates ;)

Turns out my car didnt make it in the scene ;) So instead I will be watching yours :)

06 June 2009, 12:03 PM
Nice! It's great at least that you had the free time to make up for the 'incident'! ;) It's looking great now! Hope to see some wheels soon, it looks kinda weird without them! ;)

06 June 2009, 12:11 PM
even james bond didn't have a car like this one ! amazing design love it :)

06 June 2009, 05:14 PM
Looks beautiful, its setting the bar high for your agent, but its gonna be a good entry if you finish. :)

06 June 2009, 06:13 PM
Some nice modeling there. I hope you submit a turntable to qualify for the modeling award.

06 June 2009, 02:41 AM
@dboydesign: thanks, i wasn't sure if my car was going to make my scene either but I'm pretty sure it will now...

@warpv: thanks, I'll be sure to add some tires onto those rims today

@platernity: that's cos not even james bond is as cool as gadget

@Airflow: here's hoping i finish

@Spyndel: I'm certainly gunning for an award, which one i don't know...i just really feel like I need a win right now...

more updates to come today, will hopefully get the bulk of the car finished and add a few details...

06 June 2009, 05:36 AM (

Finally added some tires...doesn't look so strange now...

06 June 2009, 05:51 AM

great modeling and great car design.

Man you're fast, in the time I made half a car you made 2!

Keep going!

06 June 2009, 10:00 AM (

some more progress

06 June 2009, 10:05 AM
Going good bro... I love the car design...keep it up...!

06 June 2009, 03:38 AM (

I've scrapped my idea to do 2 comic book covers because it would have been too much work and i always try and take on too much and then i don't finish.

So instead I'm focusing on one image. It'll be some sort of daring escape, and the setting for that escape will be none other than Oia in Santorini.

It won't be like a 1:1 copy of Oia, but more a townscape based on the look of Oia...

06 June 2009, 04:29 AM
Well.... if you can put a street around the Santorini-type location you can still use the car....
Even if it means using an angle that obscures unfinished parts of the car.

The combination of both the Citroen GT and a fresh Mediterranean type port town would be very nice.

06 June 2009, 04:33 AM
@CGIPadawan: yeh i'm definitely still using the car, just need to work out

one idea i had was having the car breaking through a barrier and going over the cliff with some goons chasing behind. Up above would be gadget who has just ejected from the car and is flying away using his helicopter in his hat (which i have a really cool idea on how to do).

I could also perhaps have the car starting to convert into a submersible version so that it can get away safely...

06 June 2009, 04:40 AM
Or the car can be parked, and the RDJ-agent (RDJ is still the agent, right?) can be meeting with some beautiful woman.

I mean.. why else would a suave, sophisticated, secret agent be driving a Citroen GT in a Mediterranean tourist spot?

In fact, the POV can be the woman's. Remember that gag in True Lies? How girls like the "Man of Adventure"....

But there can be that "Dangerous Invitation" thing to it.. She could be saying to herself: "Oh I know you.. Girls for Dinner, Death for Breakfast...."

It can be like a still-life..... and RDJ's type is perfect for that role.... When that guy smiles.. Girls know it's trouble. But they won't be able to stay away.

Just a thought I had..... I mean.. I just don't want to see Santorini in flames that's all.

P.S.: Just read a few posts back and remembered this is the "Inspector Gadget" concept. Sorry... went off topic.

06 June 2009, 01:18 PM
Ah man, Santorini is such an amazing place! Although I don't remember there being any Citroen GTs when I was there! It would make for such a great image! You have the exotic car, now you have the exotic backdrop as well! I like the action shot of the car flying off the cliff with the Santorini style village going up the side of the hill behind it, could be really cool! :) Anyway, let us know what you decided to do!

06 June 2009, 03:50 PM
You recovered from your calamity quite well. Repetition is good for the soul eh, just not for the nerves. :D

With that kind of hill country a winding road up high would look great to have a high speed chase around.

06 June 2009, 07:07 AM (

My approach for my Santorini-ish city will be to create a whole bunch of building blocks and then just build up the town block by block. I've also worked out a good way to use the standard max stairs to make all my steps.

06 June 2009, 08:46 PM
The GT turned out sweet! I think you're making the rest of us look bad with your speed!!

06 June 2009, 11:06 AM (

Most uninteresting WIP update

it's a nose! it will hopefully be Robert Downey Jr's nose....

06 June 2009, 07:05 PM
Most uninteresting WIP update

Lol, well at least it's a good nose. :D

06 June 2009, 07:13 AM (

just trying to find a good setup for the scene

06 June 2009, 11:42 PM
Nice! I'm not that great at composition/framing, but it seems though that it could still use a bit of have such a cool scene to put through I'm just not really feeling it completely with this camera setup. Maybe try a few tests and post them here? I'm sure someone else can further help you with the composition...

06 June 2009, 10:13 AM (

had some time off from this the last few days but I'm getting back into it's a model of the inspectors hat

06 June 2009, 11:00 AM
lol u know what they say every characte begins with a Hat :wise: ..........looking great I like how it is going so far ...........keep going

06 June 2009, 11:38 AM
Still a nice work !
Keep the good job !

07 July 2009, 03:19 AM
@thebest: thanks, i figured the hat would be a good spot to start with his costume as well....

@gpepper: thanks

I'm toying around with a few more ideas in my head for a scene as i want to do something that I know I'll be able to finish by the due date for the challenge, and I'm not sure that's the case with my current scene.....

07 July 2009, 07:44 AM (

just a few inspiration images for the look of my agent. Need a bit of help though...

can anyone identify the gun? i found it in the header of a gun sales website but i can't make out any markings other than '5.7x26' on the side

07 July 2009, 08:58 AM
I'm not into guns, but after a little google search it seems to be a FN Five-Seven (5.7x28!).

Hope this helps!

07 July 2009, 09:16 AM
thanks for that, that's exactly the to get to making

07 July 2009, 09:31 AM
As extra inspiration, allow me to mimic Major Boothroyd from the classic Bond films to let you know that the FN Five-Seven carries the largest possible munition for a pistol that straddles the border with what should be considered rifle ammunition: the 5.7 x 26 (or 28) round. This round is able to penetrate U.S. Army PASGT Vests and Helmets if within operating ranges and resembles miniaturized 7.26 (AK-47) style ammunition. Such is FN Herstal's pride in their invention that the "5" and the "7" form the name of the weapon.

The same type of ammunition is used in the Herstal P90 Personal Defense Weapon. FN Herstal's logic was that troops carrying the P90 can also carry the Five-Seven without having to carry different ammunition.

As "Q" himself once said of another formidable weapon: "Light as a feather but with a delivery like brick through a plate glass window."

Definitely no spy should be without one today. An excellent choice for your secret agent. ;)

07 July 2009, 02:55 AM
@CGIPadawan: hey thanks for that info, seems i did luck upon the perfect gun for this....

i'll be modeling the current USG model of the Five-Seven but I'll keep the shaped trigger guard instead of using the current squared off one. The extra curve is supposed to aid in gloved use, and Gadget will be gloved so it makes sense....

will have some modeling updates on the gun later today....

07 July 2009, 07:20 AM (

First bit of progress on the gun, got the slide done.

07 July 2009, 06:13 AM (

Started working on the body of the gun...

07 July 2009, 09:39 AM
i'll be getting back to this tomorrow...i've got a new laptop coming later this week which is about 10x faster than my current i hopefully will be able to handle all the rendering etc involved with the challenge...

07 July 2009, 12:07 AM
Just a quick reminder only in case you haven't noticed it. Pistols do not have Discharge Slot on the left side of Slider. They only have them on the right.

Best of luck! Love the gun! :)

07 July 2009, 12:50 AM
@CGIPadawan: lol i was hoping no one would pick up on was a mistake by me for rendering purposes. Because i wanted to show the back of the gun closer in the same pic i just flipped it instead of rotating

but rest assured there is only one discharge slot and its on the right

07 July 2009, 01:02 AM
@CGIPadawan: lol i was hoping no one would pick up on was a mistake by me for rendering purposes. Because i wanted to show the back of the gun closer in the same pic i just flipped it instead of rotating

but rest assured there is only one discharge slot and its on the right

So that's what it was!

I was wondering why I couldn't see a "pit" or "valley" in the silhouette if there really was two discharge slots! Because such a big depression should be visible even from the other side.

I couldn't see it... because there was none! You just flipped it! Lol!

07 July 2009, 04:55 AM (

I've made the decision to swap out Robert Downey Jr for Hugh Laurie. Mostly because I already had a model of Hugh from the last Hardcore Modeling Challenge, but also because I wanted to have a slightly more rough looking Gadget...

I presume this is said in the rules you could use pre-fabricated models, so yeh...hopefully this is allowed...

This is just the base mesh, I have a version I ran through mudbox which I'll post in a minute...

07 July 2009, 04:59 AM (

And here's the mudbox'd version of Hugh. Still need to work out what I'm doing for hair....probably just geometry as the hat will be covering most of it...

07 July 2009, 09:26 AM (

was just playing around with some lighting and found this look which i quite like...with the eye's concealed by shadow and a little glimpse of that Hugh Laurie smirk...

07 July 2009, 09:39 AM
Nice head, mate. Good convincing eyes and wrinkles around.
But your face is stretched more than it's possible, it's easy to fix, move the jaw a little bit higher, like on the picture.

07 July 2009, 02:05 PM
@germanager: i can see what you mean about the stretching (love the avatar modifications too but i think that might just be how hugh laurie is...i remember i checked it several times against several photos of him when i made that and from memory they matched up...

i'll still take a look at it tomorrow cos I appreciate the feedback but i think that might just be how his head is...he has a long face...

07 July 2009, 02:37 PM
agree with germanager, the eyes are at middle
it's all about perspective and angles, take a deeper look at photos
if he has skull inside his head, the eyes should be in middle

good luck

07 July 2009, 11:18 AM (

i'm thinking i'm going to go with something like this....

gadget is cornered by a bunch of goons but has that knowing smile on his face as he busts out a myriad of gadgets...

07 July 2009, 06:52 PM
Ha! That scene is just plain awesome! This is going to be amazing when you're done.

07 July 2009, 03:00 AM
@Terraplex: hey thanks, i was quite pleased with how it lets just hope i can get it

07 July 2009, 05:56 AM (

Another update on the gun, all the bumps on the grip are bump maps for fun...

even if i only do one thing today i'm going to finish this gun....

07 July 2009, 06:30 AM
Nice modeling on the car and gun, that texture on the is sweet you make that?
Like the character/agent too reminds of woody haroldson with a lil of Jason Statham
from The Transporter

07 July 2009, 06:48 AM
Great modeling. the character face is pretty cool too but be careful on the size on your previz ...

Keep up the great work ,

even if i only do one thing today i'm going to finish this gun....

:D ...

cheers ,

07 July 2009, 07:32 AM (

made the trigger and the modified trigger guard, not long now till the main body is done, then its on to all the little switches etc...

07 July 2009, 11:17 AM (

finished the main body of the gun....onto the details now...

i must say this is the most challenging thing i've ever modeled, all the shapes and curves and details that you've got to work hurts my

07 July 2009, 01:05 PM (

Larger Version:

well after a 9 hour modeling marathon today i've finally finished off the gun....and i couldn't be happier with the results

07 July 2009, 01:18 AM
@A3DLover: if you mean the texture on the gun, its nothing special, its basically just a standard phong material in max with a little bump and some specular

@Zapan: yeh i thought it looked a little

don't know what i'll work on today....i might try and get some of gadget's outfit done...

07 July 2009, 02:18 AM (

The last renders didn't really show off the modeling much so here's just a plain grey version of the gun...

07 July 2009, 08:07 PM
Seriously dude, the gun looks amazing! :buttrock: But what 15 hours plus on the gun?? :argh: I've barely even found that amount of time to put on my entire entry yet! :surprised Haha! Anyway, I'm also loving the new idea with the thugs. But you put so much effort in that gun, you better make sure you see it real close to the camera! Maybe have one of the goons be more of a boss figure and he's standing with this particular gun to his side (maybe a cool silver or gold gun for him?) That way, you can put him in the foreground (from behind) and we can get a real nice view of that awesome gun in the final image! Btw, it's still set in Santorini, right? Anyway, keep it up!

07 July 2009, 08:18 PM
Great modeling, Bro! The scene has a lot of action ready to start...very kool moment:thumbsup:

07 July 2009, 03:10 AM
@warpv: thanks a bunch, you've given me a few ideas that i'm going to try out for scene setup and composition....stay tuned....

@digitalinkmind: thanks

07 July 2009, 06:21 AM (

ok so the new scene (which will be mostly the same as the last one with a few changes) will now have a bad guy

this is my reference for said bad guy...we will only see his hand...

see where i'm going with this?

07 July 2009, 07:03 AM
Yes. Dr. Claw can be watching the action from a monitor while stroking Mad-Cat.

Note however, that if you've given Gadget a post-modern Gadget mobile.. then everything must reflect this new style. So the Monitors will be something like flat-screen Samsung HD TVs...

Good luck.

07 July 2009, 07:11 AM
whew those are looking great :D :buttrock:

08 August 2009, 04:06 AM
Really good modeling and attention to detail. Its great you chose Hugh Laurie as the Inspector because he actually has the right blend of humor and acting ability to pull of the role. Good luck with the challenge sir.

08 August 2009, 02:53 AM
hmm... 4 days to final image...hmm

lets see if i can throw something together before the deadline....

why must i always leave things till the last minute....

08 August 2009, 07:18 PM
So? Were you able to make it in time?! I hope so! You had a real great image going here! Best of luck!
