Kirt Stanke is entered in the "Secret Agent" update: View Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Work In Progress: I'm soo far behind (

06-12-2009, 06:19 PM (

Just getting warmed up with some character sketches. No idea what I'm going to do yet (which always seems to be the case). :D

06-12-2009, 08:33 PM (

Maybe too much Venture Bros. ???

06-12-2009, 08:36 PM
Sorry, not going to see much color until after the weekend.
I should have brought my Wacom to work today.

06-12-2009, 09:45 PM
No need for colour, looks more mysterious and agentsy like this :)

06-13-2009, 05:52 AM
 best of luck to you Kirt and have fun! ;)

06-15-2009, 05:18 PM (

1 of 2 set of reference images that I'll be using.

06-15-2009, 05:20 PM (

2 of 2 set of reference images that I'll be using.

06-15-2009, 05:26 PM
A bit more info ...

I'll be working on a Spy lab type of illustration. I always thought Q was the coolest character of all the Bond films and he didn't get nearly enough screen time. It's hardly arguable that without the gadgets, Bond and all the other Spy-guys would just be average Joes. So I'm going to focus on the makers rather than the secret agent (just to be different).

Also, this will be a tribute to one of my favorite spy movies, Top Secret. Now on with the show ...

06-15-2009, 05:54 PM (

Here's a little peek at what may be on the chalkboard in the background. Should give you a good idea of where I'm going with this. :D

06-15-2009, 06:31 PM
ITS A TROJAN COW! I LOVE IT. looking forward to the finished thing :applause:

06-15-2009, 06:43 PM
"Ninja Spies! YES!" That is good stuff. Good luck Kirt.

06-15-2009, 06:49 PM

the guy of the front seems to be very passionate...

06-15-2009, 07:58 PM (

Some VIPs visiting the lab.

06-15-2009, 08:02 PM
I forsee myself purchasing a new Wacom before this challenge is over. It's acting funny.

06-15-2009, 10:08 PM
This looks really very fun. At first I thought your drawing with the VIPs was of John McCain and his handlers.

06-15-2009, 10:15 PM (

So ... the pieces are being composed together now. I'll probably open up that cow so you can see the insides a bit.

06-15-2009, 10:18 PM
Cool stuff man! Love your character styling so far, and seeing how you think makes me laugh! :) Love the chalkboard sketch - priceless!

06-15-2009, 11:04 PM
Kirt, you're awesome.

Now you just need to put in more machine guns and jiggling jubblies and it'll be complete.

06-16-2009, 12:23 AM
Interesting to see your process. Original concept. : p

06-16-2009, 01:10 AM
ahhaha brilliant idea there! Will certainly be following this thread...If the cow doesn't work you can go for a large wooden badger ;)

06-16-2009, 04:32 AM
Trojan cow is pure win. Love the idea, Kirt!

06-16-2009, 06:04 AM
Lol I saw the Cow in the thumbnail and thought "OMG this guy is influenced by Top Secret, for sure!!". I`m really glad I wasn't disapointed. IMO the best spoof movie in history, hands down.
I`m subscribing to this thread. I can't wait to see this develop.

06-16-2009, 07:52 PM
Nice touch on the Chalkboard.........this is going to rock  keep going :wip:

06-16-2009, 09:03 PM
Cool, original concept and great sketches - even with a dodgy tablet - atleast it is a good excuse to get the new Intuos4!

Good luck

06-16-2009, 09:05 PM
great idea there Kirt... looking forward to seeing more. Hope the tablet holds out.

06-16-2009, 09:19 PM
Dude, this one is very funny, and certainly an unexpected twist on the theme. Love it.

06-16-2009, 09:58 PM
Thanks everyone.

Yeah, my tablet is definitely going out on me. The width of my brushes are painting only a couple of pixels wide when using pen pressure settings. I have to continue with hard round brushes because this is the only setting that seems to work consistently. It's a shame, I've had this tablet more than 10 years and have used it on everything going back to my first 486DX PC and an Apple (which I forget the model of).

It has a lovely crack running vertical on the top center header and the tablet plastic cover is well worn in the center. The stylus is my second (the first one got lost in a move) and the COM port plug seems like ancient technology today. It's been dropped more times than Elizabeth Taylor, but damn it - the thing worked (until now  )! This thing should be the poster peripheral for Wacom.

Wacom = Quality

(did that sound too much like a commercial?) :D

06-16-2009, 10:49 PM
(did that sound too much like a commercial?) :D

Yeap, yeap.

06-16-2009, 11:46 PM (

Didn't get much done today other than some quick sketchy stuff in the background. I've decided to put everything in a warehouse rather than the small room. It'll open it up more like a spy lab should be and give me a reason to put other hidden goodies in the background.

I doooo love to add little hidden gems.

06-17-2009, 02:21 AM
Kirt, you've gotta get some power cables attaching to those udders.

06-17-2009, 03:11 AM
now thats very interesting.i look forward to see how this develop:)

06-17-2009, 04:49 AM
Kirt! Perfect example of how an agent should come out! YOu have very good ideas and its coming a long nicely, can't wait to see this one in color, keep up the good work!!! love it!!!

06-17-2009, 08:25 AM
yup the new Background gives it more life .......keep going

06-17-2009, 08:33 AM

love all your ideas and your style fits the brief perfectly :)
greta stuff.

06-17-2009, 03:39 PM
Hi Kirt,

I like a lot your idea, and the sketches are great:thumbsup:
keep it up:beer:

06-17-2009, 07:47 PM
Bummer on the Wacom Kirt. I had to retire mine recently after 12 years of faithful service because Wacom isn't making 64-bit drivers for the serial models. :D The thing still works great, best piece of equipment I've ever bought.

Anyway, have you changed the pen tip... ever? I never had to change mine but maybe thats the problem. Good luck working it out. The picture is shaping up fantasticly, love the concept.

06-17-2009, 10:35 PM (

Yeah ... I think I'm going to try something different and block in a background using Valve's Hammer editor. I could use XSI but I can work quicker with Hammer. And I think it'll be suitable to get my background elements in place without much fuss.

06-17-2009, 10:40 PM
Hehe, what an insane concept :))))

Cool stuff

06-18-2009, 12:29 AM (

Had to get a scientist in the driver's seat before the end of the night. :D

Off to Scouts! See ya tomorrow.

06-18-2009, 12:48 AM
Looking golden.

I love the kind of 50's /60's feel you've captured even at this early stage.

06-18-2009, 12:52 AM
Ahahah you never fail to make me laugh with your illustrations Kirt. Love how this one going so far! :D

06-18-2009, 02:45 AM
Well crap, just when I thought I had a chance to win I see this thread!:) Your idea is the best I've seen so far. It really comes together by putting an agent in the cow.

06-18-2009, 03:29 AM
This is definitely the coolest thing I've seen in quite some time--
can't wait to see how you develop it!
Good luck!

06-18-2009, 03:45 AM
lol, the story looks interesting
like ur drawing style:thumbsup:

06-18-2009, 05:04 AM
Well crap, just when I thought I had a chance to win I see this thread!:) Your idea is the best I've seen so far. It really comes together by putting an agent in the cow.
Hahahaha ... good news then, I seldom finish the challenges. Good luck! :D

Wyatt - Yes, I've replaced the nib a couple of times. Not that it really needed to be switched. But more out of a need to get rid of some of those extras I got with the new stylus. They sent me like 10 and I replaced one about every 3 -4 years. I still have many. :D

06-18-2009, 08:04 AM
hehe, beautiful work so far.
programmer siting in a cow is a great and funny touch, and i love how the power plug (if it is one) is connected to a cow through her nipples :P

can't w8 to see more!!! :)

06-18-2009, 10:18 AM
Superb idea...The expressions of the faces shall play a crucial part in this image... Thumbs up Buddy...

I suggest to work more on the background...few more props (plans / blueprints / etc)

06-18-2009, 04:21 PM
and i love how the power plug (if it is one) is connected to a cow through her nipples :P
Oh nice. I totally missed the udder power coupler my first look. Great addition.

06-18-2009, 04:37 PM
I added it after Swizzle's suggestion. ( Good call Swizzle.

06-18-2009, 06:25 PM
good concept buddy. May be the camera angle can be slightly more focussed on the cow region.just a suggestion.
waiting for the post production :)

06-18-2009, 06:49 PM
hello Kirt! this is undoubtedly the most original i've seen here! ... as rishikesh mentioned about the angle .. how about foreshortening? .... just an idea ..

looking forward to the color treatment! :bounce:

good luck dude!

06-18-2009, 06:50 PM
holly cow!! this is so far my fave idea on here!

06-18-2009, 07:06 PM (

OK, so now I'm adding more real estate to my image. I don't know if this is setting myself up for failure (as it will eventually involve more time to complete) or it's necessary to add interest to the cow. I was looking at it this morning and everything just seemed crowded into the left side of the image. So by moving the chalkboard over to the other side and adding more space I'm hoping that this has created more balance while giving more focus to the cow.

I need to work out some more ideas for what I want to put in the background. Right now I'm just kinda smudging in shapes with no real plan. That's not working out so well for me. :D

06-18-2009, 07:31 PM
What about moving the crane and cow piece further to the left of the image and angling the back removable section up, like on a hinge, so you expose more of the inside for gadgets and tech-bits?

Moving the chalk board opened it up very well.

06-18-2009, 07:41 PM
I love this one. Looking forward to more Kirt!

06-18-2009, 08:36 PM (

Yeah, I think that works Wyatt. Thanks!

06-18-2009, 08:36 PM
Hahaha... it's soo cool and funny!

06-18-2009, 08:59 PM
the new composition looks much better. the man inside the cow is a great touch.
keep it up:beer:

06-18-2009, 09:38 PM
i remember you always brought fun ideas to these challenges kirt, and you still deliver just that! this entry stands out to me.

moving the "cow part" opened up the pic, but it distracts and leads my eyes out of the picture. i'm not sure it's a good idea to have it half way out of the picture.
maybe you could move it closer to the camera, having it go into the picture. you could even let us see the "rails" in the roof where it's attached. that would give the picture a bit more depth. and/or add a 3rd layer(front) with cow parts or pipes hanging. just ideas, keeping an eye on this!

06-18-2009, 09:40 PM
It looks really great and as mentioned before very funny :applause:

06-18-2009, 10:30 PM
I know you're still working on the BG but I think other people working on gadgets and moving stuff around in the background will help. Almost as if the cow project is just one of many weird things going on at this facility. I think the clump of guys right now feels a little odd. Obviously this is turning into something that is going to take up a lot of your time;) .

06-18-2009, 10:47 PM
WOW!Awesome , Kirt:D
The guy inside the cow vehicle reminds me a scene from Top Secret, but also has a lot of the 60s agent series style:thumbsup:
Looking foward to see this piece finished.

06-18-2009, 11:41 PM (

fellah - Hey thanks for stopping by. I always admired your work in the challenges too. I see what you mean about the eye leading off to the left. I think I've fixed that with this update by adding a visual anchor on the left side (glass display) and moving the crane back into the picture (per your suggestion). Thanks!

CircusRobot - Yes, that's the plan. I just have to think of some "devices" that are equally clever but not distracting to the cow (as this is the focus of the image). I think there may even be some room for Dr. Benson Honeydew and Beaker somewhere in that background. Heheheheh.

06-19-2009, 04:56 AM
This is cool I like the flip up back suggestion, maybe you could put in a team of people like NASA, you know the clipboard guy, the two console with headset guys, and radar telemetry guy. Maybe someone underneath like working on the udder lying on their back (hehe just seemed funny).

06-19-2009, 05:27 AM
Mwahahaa, undercover cow. This reminds me the film, Top Secret!
Looking good so far!

06-19-2009, 05:38 AM
Psssst ... see post #9. :D

06-19-2009, 09:44 AM
One of my favorite ones, really like the idea! Keep goin man. Cheers

06-19-2009, 10:24 AM
really nice concept and idea! looking for the next update :D

06-19-2009, 04:00 PM
Looking great Kirt. I just noticed the frazzled guy standing behind the general. Either he works on the project or the general is a very demanding boss. :D

I love images were the more you look at them the better a story they tell.

06-19-2009, 05:40 PM
loooking good!

it is a privilege to see master piece being created :)

keep bringing them on !!!

06-19-2009, 06:21 PM
Kirt This idea is great.
The new composition does create a "triangle" for the viewer creating balance on the piece. From the board, to the guys unto the cow.
Concerned about getting too busy. Just my thought...

keep rolling...

06-20-2009, 12:05 AM (

I didn't get nearly enough of this done today that I wanted to. Last couple of weeks at my current job, so things are crazy.

Anywhoo ... some minor details added in the background. You should be able to make out a tank under a tarp, a shadowy figure with a remote control and the Iron Giant (threw that one in there for fun - not sure if he'll stay).

I may not get anything done over the weekend. Busy busy busy! Have a good Father's Day!

06-20-2009, 02:59 PM
Hi mate,

you know your idea could actually work in real life, im serious.

go for it, i think this kind of comic concepts images are the ones that last.

have fun!

im watching you.

06-20-2009, 05:13 PM
you know your idea could actually work in real life, im serious.
I think we all secretly want to see ninja spies jumping from Trojan cows. I don't think we could call ourselves "creatives" if that weren't true. :D

Thanks for all the nice comments so far. I'm having a lot of fun on this challenge.

06-20-2009, 05:26 PM
haha the Iron Giant, is a good idea, what about add some real conspiracy machines in the background, like an ovni or a big foot suit? Things like that.

06-20-2009, 05:36 PM
HA cool stuff.
I think some of those dudes should be in lab coats.
you know like they are the ones who created it all smart like.

06-21-2009, 12:18 PM
Very cool concept and idea.I love it.:D

06-23-2009, 12:26 AM (

I should probably start thinking about adding some color to this or I'm going to get behind.

06-23-2009, 04:29 AM (

I should probably start thinking about adding some color to this or I'm going to get behind.

We have tons of time left! (famous last words?) Seriously though, you're actually ahead of most people here, a lot of us don't even have our concepts solidified yet. I love your concept though--it feels very James Bond-ish with a hefty splash of humour. It looks like you're having fun with this, which is the way it should be. :D
You better finish this, I want to see the end result! :arteest:

06-23-2009, 04:40 AM
I just got three words for your work: wow wa weewa! Great work! very Inspirational. Keep it up!

06-23-2009, 05:10 AM
Very interesting concept!

Its good to see how you developed the concept. The idea of keeping board right side in the image was a good decision, the whole image is looking very balanced now.

Looking for more updates . .

06-23-2009, 06:16 AM
i like classic feeling overthere,a good concept!

06-23-2009, 06:40 AM
HA! I love it! Awesome work with the design and composition. The only thing i would possibly change would be a mini gun that comes out of it's head, but that's probably overkill and would distract from everything else.  :applause:

06-23-2009, 07:22 AM
oh awesome! i can never watch a spy movie seriously...this is my fav entry so far

06-23-2009, 08:59 AM
I love this idea, it really made me smile when I saw it. Good luck I can imagine it doing well :)

06-23-2009, 08:39 PM
Love this idea, one of the best (if not) the best I've seen so far. Great concept and I can't wait to see the final product. Trojan Cow FTW!

06-23-2009, 08:56 PM
Looking great bro. Just to throw some ideas out there, you pick. :D

Area 51 spaceship, fake moon landing site, rocket propelled chicken launcher, jet pack, someone testing anti-gravity boots...

I could go on all night.

06-23-2009, 09:06 PM (

Minor things updated. Not feeling it so this is all I have for today. Manatee Lab coat guy moving a dangerous looking box of cats? Didn't like the way the roof or the suspended house-thing were looking so I've removed them for now.

06-23-2009, 09:13 PM
I think I actually preferred the roof as it was before, but possibly with less contrast? I dunno, but I love the manatee. :D

06-23-2009, 09:20 PM
Yeah, I plan on putting those back on the roof. They just looked wrong as they were and I gave up on trying to fix them today. I'm in a funk today. I'm not sure if it's a lack of sleep or general frustration with my last week at work. :p

06-23-2009, 09:20 PM

Oh wow, I was not expecting that, lol. Cool idea.

Side note, I hope everything is going okay. We can talk more Wednesday.

06-23-2009, 09:26 PM
Side note, I hope everything is going okay.
Oh sorry, for those who don't know ... bank failed and we're converting data for our new owners. Good news is that I do have a new job starting on Monday. It's just this past couple of weeks have been - tiresome (to put it politely).

06-24-2009, 01:46 AM
Oh! The COW! you know Kirt that I am in love with your cows! :P long time no see pal ...
well ... so I see that your approach (visually) is rather realistic this time, not that I oppose, just curious.

btw I love that Iron Giant in the back! haha

06-24-2009, 02:26 AM
Haha! I love the addition of the sea cow to top it off! This just gets better and better. :bounce:

06-24-2009, 03:34 AM
ilasolomon - Hiya Ila! Yes, this one is more realistic than my previous works. I don't know why. It just happens that way sometimes. I was wanting to do something stylish and cartoony for the challenge but I actually like how this one is turning out so far. Good to hear from you again. I hope you're doing well.

06-25-2009, 12:40 AM
Love the idea and the way you're going about this Kirt. It's got all the right ingredients to say ''spy' to me, and make you smile at the same time. Priceless.

06-25-2009, 03:51 AM
Hello Kirt, u have a great start here... in my opinion, the best ideia until now, congrats
good luck for u!!

06-26-2009, 02:15 PM
I love the entries that make you smile when you see them, and this nearly flipped the top of my head off, great stuff!

06-29-2009, 03:55 PM
nice concept,and original idea,good luck :D

06-30-2009, 12:16 AM
I just about fell out of my chair laughing when I pulled up your entry just now! I absolutely love it!

I couldn't decide whether I liked the rough cartoony concept sketch or the actual current version better until I saw that you have the rough sketch on the blackboard. Perfect! Wonderful! Brilliant! Other Flattering Unconstructive Exclamations!

This is the sort of artwork that can just brighten a whole day. :)

07-01-2009, 06:21 PM
hehe this one's cool... poor cow! haha
it's pretty neat! great sketches!

07-11-2009, 06:58 PM
Off to Best Buy to pick up my new Intuos4. I had to go with the small one because the job change has me short on cash. However, for the same price as the Bamboo medium I felt it was a good purchase.

Expect to see some progress (finally) in the coming weeks. :D

07-12-2009, 09:09 AM
Oh man secret agent cow full of ninjas, it can't get any better. I also love the super secret Iron Giant even if its not there to stay.

Your entry also reminds me of this:
Then again everything reminds me of Monty Python.

07-12-2009, 02:37 PM
This is looking really nice, Kirt! This is a very clever idea for cow-moo-flauge. :D I like the manatee on the left: I was going to suggest a more robot-skeletal version of an earlier cow prototype, but a manatee works as well (or even BETTER, if you're thinking of underwater missions!) Value-wise, one change that I might suggest is to make the spots on the cow more white around the opening, so that there's a value-contrast between the inside man's suit and the outside of the cow.

On another note, congrats on the new job - hope it goes well!

07-15-2009, 03:04 PM
cool concept!

07-23-2009, 07:24 AM
update it, mate. You're very likely to win the first place. No f*cking helicopters, guns, whatever. It's brilliant.

07-24-2009, 04:50 AM (

I'm getting so far behind. Damn you full time job! :P

Uh ... let's see ... I've added some color. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

07-24-2009, 07:44 AM
I feel the same way! Come on, you got such a great idea. You can make it.

07-24-2009, 07:53 AM
