Hey Richard,

Didn't know you were on CG Society. Awesome. Really looking forward to seeing what you come up with as well. Good luck.

06 June 2009, 07:36 PM
Hey Everyone, So I think I am going to have a fast paced, action type of animation. I really like the parkour style, a really good example is,
also Mirror's edge is a good example.

I was thinking I would have my main character stealing something important from the government. Such as incriminating information, a Virus, a DNA code, etc... Basically something that could bring down the government, or stop the government from doing something bad. This would lead into a chase sort of scene of him running away from them. Not quite sure of the outcome yet but will keep thinking about it.

Let me know If you have any cool ideas to work off.

Thanks, I look forward to seeing all your entries.

06 June 2009, 03:35 PM
Hey Richard,

Maybe check out the Bourne movies. I don't remember which one, but theres a great chase sequence in it which would be great to reference both for the animation and camera work when following someone doing crazy stunts. Just my two cents. Good luck.

06 June 2009, 04:18 PM (

Idea for the action sequence, I'm going to have him break down the door and break past the guards.

06 June 2009, 04:20 PM (

Just a stairway where the chase will continue.

06 June 2009, 12:19 AM (

1) Opening shot, walking up to Bank doors.
2)Runs Past Security guards at front
3)Goes into circuit room and locks door behing him so security cannot open it.
4)Starts pulling a bunch of wires apart destroying everything. Looks at Camera in the room and it powers down
5)Busts out of room with security getting knocked down.
6)continues the chase upstairs
7)runs along the rooftop
8) gets to edge of builing and as there are tons of security after him he phones someone.
9)Cut to one of the security guards on phone at front robbing bank, makes off with all the money through the front door
10)Runner jumps off building to the next one. Security can`t make the jump

Wow...that's looking very impressive! Some great choreography you've got going on there :)

My only comment in that the soldier who's head he grabs and slams down has a reaction that's a bit slow after he jumps over him. These soldiers look like they'd be highly trained, so I'd imagine their reactions to be really snappy.

07 July 2009, 01:17 AM
Hey thanks Tyson. Your right about the reaction of the guy. I will try to sharpen it up when I have the time. By the way, loved your short last time.

07 July 2009, 01:23 AM
oh yeah! this animation looks greate!

you choosed best scene for reference

07 July 2009, 02:40 AM
Yeah Man, animation is looking real nice. I'm digging that Parkour style. Good Job

07 July 2009, 07:29 AM
Awesome! I agree with Tyson about the snap of the first soldier. Perhaps to make his slow reaction time more believable tho, you could have his head bounce a little as it hits the door...that combined with a nice 'CRACK' sound could look and feel really painful, and lead to his disorientation.

I'm definitely looking forward to more!

07 July 2009, 07:47 AM
Really Great Animation!:buttrock: Thats will be a Powerfull entry! Nice action.
Best to you!

07 July 2009, 10:54 AM

Thanks for the comments everyone.

07 July 2009, 02:33 AM
it looks like this one is going to look very good. can't wait to see more. The models look like they were made very well, good work.

07 July 2009, 03:46 AM

Keep them coming mate.

07 July 2009, 06:38 PM
great animating!!

so good - moves, timing, energy, smooth and everything

only one thing im thinking about, can i ask why the 'swat' guyz dont have guns ?

07 July 2009, 03:05 PM
Thanks for the comments

Thanks for the feedback, the only reason I didn't give them guns is because I wanted it to be a chase not a gun fight. I didn't want people to be saying "why dont they just shoot him?" I thought the action would be better that if the guards have to keep up with him in order to catch him.

07 July 2009, 07:20 PM
This is great stuff! Can't wait to see more! :applause:

Best regards, Varun

07 July 2009, 01:56 AM

Really nice work. It is an excellent set up shot because you can see the story of what happened just moments before but leaving it for the imagination to fill in. Love the police lights, really gives it a sense of suspense. Can't wait to see the final animation.

07 July 2009, 07:16 PM
Thats amazing Richard. Totally love this work!

07 July 2009, 09:10 PM

looks very promising so far. The atmosphere is really sensible, the animations looks very good and smooth.
I just think, textures are a bit plain and lifeless, maybe because there is nearly no specularity on them, for example the lamps or the case.

so long

07 July 2009, 09:55 PM
Great animation. Keep it up Richard, can't wait to see it all flow together.

Best regards, Varun

07 July 2009, 11:20 PM
I think this entry is looking really awesome so far! Love the clean look of the renders, and the animation is great!

08 August 2009, 03:22 AM

08 August 2009, 04:52 PM
very fluid and believable!
i love it

08 August 2009, 06:07 PM
I like the expression of the guy, the animation is are almost there man.

08 August 2009, 10:07 PM
Thanks again for the comments everyone. Everybody's stuff is really inspiring.

Thats really looking good so far. How much more do you have to get done?

I have lots to do, I have about 3 or 4 more scenes to go. I am going to have a fight sequence on the rooftop, so that will take a while to animate. I think when it's all done the entire short will be around 45 seconds. short n sweet.

08 August 2009, 05:47 PM
i like it!

can i has moAr the shots?

08 August 2009, 11:51 PM
yes please more shots .
Thats looking great man, In the opening of the sequence , a dirt layer is tiling on screen right on the wall , just something i noticed ,everything else looks great surfacing wise, really nice level of weathering , not overdistracing at all. also wondering at 0:05 if he should extend his back and shoulders a bit further towards the stairs , he seemed a bit far away from the 5th stair he eventually steps on to. You can swear at me if i am not making any sense.

08 August 2009, 01:16 PM
Hey Richard,

Thanks for your comments. Your animation looks great. I am looking forward to seeing all of the shots.

08 August 2009, 03:35 PM

Great shot Richard. Reminds me of the one in the trailer of District 9!
Very cool work so far. :)

08 August 2009, 04:13 AM
i like it even moAr! :D a few things...the part where he shields his eyes from the spotlight didn't feel first i thought he did some type of wavey :wavey: i think you can strengthen this pose by using his forearm instead of just his these...

but other than that, i really like everything about it!

08 August 2009, 08:20 PM
RedCigarette, Thanks, I appreciate your comments

Ragdoll, Thanks for the comment, I see what you mean, I was trying to keep his face on screen. I will see if I can make it read better.

Camera work is super. Animation super, modeling super - it will be super shot :)

That feels totally awesome!

08 August 2009, 04:49 PM
Nicely done, althought I think that spot light should be much more shaky. If it is on helicopter I can imagine that it would shake like crazy. You can see that in many movies.. can't recall any titles. :) At the moment hot spot moves too smoothly. All the rest is very good.

08 August 2009, 11:09 PM
This shot is realy cool. I like texturing very much - . Everything fits to this style.

Will You use some other composition work to those shots ? or it is final quality?
i guess dof is changing in very beggining of this shot - maybe this is not necacary, its looks cool anyway but... maybe if will have some time you can chack it how it will looks without changing focus from arm to buliding.

08 August 2009, 12:57 AM
Hey Richard, very nice work there... Your entry is very inspiring.

best of luck in finishing.

08 August 2009, 08:38 PM
Nice! Love your camera choices and timing...

The shakiness of the swat guy in the foreground is a little distracting to me... I know he's in a helicopter but I think it's maybe too slow of a shake... or too regular. Maybe both. Sorry I'm not great at describing what feels off to me. The rest looks awesome though!

08 August 2009, 05:22 PM
RedCigarette, thanks again

Pierzak, Yea the spot light is quite smooth, I agree with you, I didn't want it to be too distracting. I will take a look though if I have time at the end.
Thanks for the comments.

Staszek, Thanks for the compliments, I will see what it looks like without the depth of field change.

Syndicate, Thanks a lot, I'm glad you like my work.

Mikebot, thanks for the comment, I see what your saying, I will see if it looks better a different way.

08 August 2009, 02:18 AM (

I will be adding more buildings to the background, and also will continue the helicopter fog light.

08 August 2009, 03:34 AM
Really nice animation. I know you wanted keep people from thinking "why don't they just shoot him." But, since you didn't give the swat guys guns I still just can't help but thinking "why don't they have guns." heh . Just makes chasing him kind of pointless when they can't stop him.

Anyway, good job.

08 August 2009, 04:54 AM
Awesome! Great choreography! :D

08 August 2009, 08:39 AM
very nice, smooth animation! grats.

08 August 2009, 08:43 AM
Looking great :)

One crit... the guy that swings the punch should probably do it just a little bit earlier... so its more fluid. I'm doing a similar bourne inspired sequence I guess, and I find that fluid action is the hardest part to achieve.

Anyway this is fantastic... You are nearly there :D

08 August 2009, 10:01 AM
You are a one talented animator.
Well done.

08 August 2009, 11:46 AM
nice animation ! im not sure that hero head pose is not to stiffly in those extreme moves but looking awsome anyway !!

08 August 2009, 12:06 AM
This is really coming along nicely.

Very nice. Great character animation.
My only worry is that your final animation is about 45 seconds only...
Well done.

09 September 2009, 09:58 PM
Nicely done Richard, very tight :)

09 September 2009, 12:40 AM
Hi Richard,

This is really great work! Well done on the complex animated sequences. I like how the story gets loops back to the beginning scene. It made me watch it again a few times. I also like how you have shorter scenes as opposed to longer shots to keep in with the speedy rhythm of the animation. The sly grin at the end is priceless. :D Awsome.

09 September 2009, 02:25 AM
Great job! Turned out very nicely.

09 September 2009, 04:01 AM

09 September 2009, 10:55 AM
Good work Richard, very very Nice!!:applause:

09 September 2009, 02:53 PM
Great work. The animation is really fluid and smooth. Really good weight to it, It's hard to get the timing when there are so many character interacting. I think you pulled off what you wanted to do, an animation which is fast, exciting and to the point. Quality over quantity. Really good work, good job.

09 September 2009, 08:01 PM
That was really cool!!

09 September 2009, 01:25 PM
awesome animation richard. timing and weighting are perfect. hope you win the contest..

wow , just fantastic work. congrats on finishing this , all the best with the judging.

09 September 2009, 05:21 PM
hay man,
Thanks for reminding me about crediting inspirations.
I thought that I would return the favour as I do enjoy your entry.
As much as I like The Runner for all of its originality, quality and greate choreography. I think that you should credit "Run Lola, Run" as it is in fast very similar. That will keep you from any trouble in case someone picks on it. All the best.

09 September 2009, 05:30 PM
I have never actually seen Run Lola Run, So any similarities are purely coincidental. Thanks though.

09 September 2009, 05:40 PM
Not at all. There is nothing wrong with redoing some movies or shots or being inspired by them. In many pixar animations there are references to other movies some intentional and some not (just similar). True Lies was mentioned by destruct007 at the beginnig of the competiton so its not a secret. Even if you haven't seen "Run Lola, Run" (greate film btw) someone might question it, but not now that you mentioned it that you didn't. Just wanted to help.

I'm not sure why it's not working for you. Did you try giving it some time to buffer? Seems to work for everyone else.

Thanks sknne77, teleliq, rsluman, and everyone else....
I'm glad you like the animation. I spent the most time on the animation side of things as I wanted it to look really fluid. It's also what I enjoy doing most.

Thanks again for the support

09 September 2009, 02:46 PM
Hey Richard,

Thats a great short. Congratulations on the quality work.

09 September 2009, 04:29 AM
I wasn't really following any of these threads (I don't know why - so much to learn from lol) but I truely LOVE your style - I remember you had posted another picture of your central character a while back, with a "what, it wasn't me" look and ever since then I've always wanted to see him animated.

You've done really well....and I truely hold your work in the 'this is inspiring, I better work my butt off' genre. Love the composition and camera angles used in some of the scenes and love the style.

10 October 2009, 03:16 PM
Congratulation to you and to everyone who finished :) :)

See you on the next challenge ;)
