Matt Ellis is entered in the "Secret Agent" update: View Challenge Page (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/secret_agent/view_entries.php?challenger=17671)
Latest Update: Concept / pre-visualization: new idea
06 June 2009, 04:36 AM
This is a very interesting challenge and I hope that I will be able to finish this time :)
So here is the idea that I am thinking about. My idea is that you will see a big gathering of people waiting for some form of transit. But if you look closely at the image you will see a person being strangled by a mysterious individual. Everyone waiting for the transit has no idea the person is struggling for their life.
I really want to take the "Secret Agent" literally in the painting and if you are not really paying attention to the painting you the viewer might even miss the agent totally.
The setting I am thinking about is a futuristic/gothic look to the buildings and in the middle of the night with lots of neon lights. So I guess its almost a Dark Knight/Blade Runner feel that I want to the setting.
I hope to add some quick composition thumbnail sketchs at some point tomorrow.
06 June 2009, 05:21 AM
great idea Matt!now lets see the pre visualization:D
06 June 2009, 07:19 AM
Sounds like a great environment. cant wait to see some sketches
06 June 2009, 03:42 PM
Hey guys thats for the comments!
Here are just a few very quick thumbnail sketchs trying to figure out a bit of the mood and composition. But I will be making a lot of these until I am happy with one.
06 June 2009, 01:42 AM
Here is another thumbnail sketch only this time I am just testing out the mood that I want to have in the painting. C&C always welcome :)
06 June 2009, 03:06 AM

06 June 2009, 03:21 AM

paperclip: Thanks theresa! I will be watching your thread as well :)
mic,Arnol2x and L-rac: Thanks guys , hope I do not disappoint.
I will try and have another update by the end of the night, But it was a long day at work so dont hold me to it :D
06 June 2009, 07:57 PM
Very nice idea. a 'where's wally' of espionage!! your first thumbnail reminds me a little of the stealth kill of assassins creed.
looking forward to seeing how this comes out.
might be cool to have other agents hidden around the image. watching, or searching for the killer
06 June 2009, 11:42 AM
Matt ! Nice to see you around !
I hope to see some cool environement here !
The sketches look cool already !
06 June 2009, 01:46 AM
Here is another thumbnail sketch. Trying to figure out this world a little bit and thinking about a final composition. The 2 main characters will be in the foreground ground of people waiting for the air bus to arrive.
nonAnon: haha where's wally is exaclty what I was thinking when comign up with the idea. I am glad you like the process so far.
gpepper: Hey man! good to see you hanging around here. I hope you will be popping into this thread a bit and giving some good crits :)
06 June 2009, 04:46 AM
Its coming along nicely, keep er up mate :)
06 June 2009, 06:00 AM
Sounds interesting...waiting for more. :)
06 June 2009, 06:58 AM
Good idea. The colors are great for the mood in your concept.
06 June 2009, 01:02 AM
Just a little update from me. I have been very busy with work this week so I havent had much time to work. So I have been just trying to develope the city a bit. I have the weekend off so I will take that time to really figure out the character design & composition.
Thanks for the comments guys!
06 June 2009, 02:00 AM
Do er up son lol love it man:D
06 June 2009, 02:12 AM
its getting better and better, love the gloomier mood:)
06 June 2009, 02:57 AM
You really like signs ;)
Nice so far. Love the opportunities for atmosphere and layering in that background. Looks like the buildings came together in a natural ramshackle way, bit of a contrast with the omnipresent street level advertising.
Hope you have time to take it through the finish :)
06 June 2009, 09:58 AM
Yeah I love the design of it !
Reminds me a bit Bladerunner and some concept of some futuristic asian city...
06 June 2009, 10:19 AM
This atmosphere is very interesting, misterious and appealing :)
06 June 2009, 01:17 PM
The mood is intense already.
brilliant style...very "movie previsualization" like.
06 June 2009, 10:55 PM
Its been a little while since I posted. I have been working on the city a bit more.
snake08, MichaelZHsee, kary, gpepper, Golpe, smallone3d, OZ: Thanks for all the comments guys! I am really glad you enjoyed the last update. Sorry I havent been around to reply sooner.
06 June 2009, 12:04 AM
Nice color design and composition. I love the locale! My only crit at this point would be that it's too much locale and not enough secret agents... or else your secret agents are so good at stealth and subterfuge that I have trouble figuring out where they are... very clever! :) But I know your still just working stuff out... good luck with the rest!
06 June 2009, 12:18 AM
hahah thanks for the comments Michael! I am glad you like it so far :) and yes if you look closely you can see the secret agent in action. Although I will be changing it up an bit and adding more people around them to help it blend in more and I havent flushed out the character design yet. But having the agent not be visible right away is exactly my idea :D
06 June 2009, 12:54 AM
07 July 2009, 01:45 PM
Next please ! ;)
07 July 2009, 10:05 PM
great work! the tone and and mood are pretty compelling. :D
07 July 2009, 10:52 PM
I like the thinking Matt. Subtle stuff and looking at the way your painting is going already, I reckon you'll pull it off beautifully.
07 July 2009, 01:42 AM
Great work! I really like that dark futuristic scene, the contrast of neon light and dark foggy streets and the idea of an agent hidden in the crowd...
07 July 2009, 04:39 AM
gpepper: soon I hope :) I am going to be busy with some freelance matte painting for the next week or so. But I hope to be able to put some time aside to work on this.
loki731: hey thanks :)
Nickillus: Thanks Nick. I am glad you enjoy the idea of taking the "secret agent" literally for this image. The problem will be having the painting stand out I think, because the agent wont be right in your face. So I plan on going into a lot of detail doing the scenery. Although I do plan on having the action between the agent and the suspect be the main focal point.
sanja: Hey thanks a lot! I am glad you like the atmosphere I am trying to create and I hope that I can pull it off :)
Update coming soon!
07 July 2009, 12:31 PM
looking really nice, can't wait to see a more detailed version, good luck!!:D
07 July 2009, 01:22 PM
I like the overall mood and color, the way you distributed the light and the angle you put on the smoke from the chimneys lead my eyes right on your agent.
Nice work Matellis
07 July 2009, 09:21 PM
Hey guys thanks for all the feedback! Here is a bit of an update from the weekend.
07 July 2009, 09:25 PM
Here is a close up of the agent scene within the painting. It is still very rough as I am just trying to come up with a basic idea. Still very much to do.
07 July 2009, 06:58 AM
Here is another update from me. I decided the big neon sign had to go. It looked ok in the cropped view I had above but it just ending up being very awkward for the whole image. So I have been playing around a bit more throughout the night.
Here is a larger version of the whole scene.
07 July 2009, 11:58 PM
Cool concept, like a lot your idea on a "tech noir" style :D The last image looks simply amazing, the city and the atmosphere is a freat touch for the concept. Looking forward for more updates! Cheers!!
07 July 2009, 10:32 AM
very cool mate.
07 July 2009, 03:36 PM
Waaaooo ! I love your style!
Good work man !

Hi matt, I didn't saw your thread before? That's beautiful. Really great. Love the ambiance and colors.
07 July 2009, 06:23 PM
Hey there! Loving the vibe you have going on here...just one little thing...
actually my favourite image in this thread is not the full one, but this close up:
In this, you can tell what's going on and where the focus is. It also has a great background and composition. It works far better for the story....just a thought...
07 July 2009, 07:50 PM
DAMN.. now I gotta work harder lol looks sick man:beer:
07 July 2009, 07:53 PM
I love how this is looking, Matt! The atmosphere is great, the details, the temperature... I like the fact that you can't see any sky, just more buildings in the "upper city." It also helps subtly reinforce that this is the seedy underbelly of the city, too. It's clear who the agent is now, although it could be less clear at a glance if you add a lot more characters in front of the bar on the left as in your earlier comp... Guess we'll just have to see. As for the agent and the robot he's grilling, it might be nice to see him struggling a bit more- the pose is a bit passive at the moment, given the threat to his well being.
Anyhow, great work!

I love the orginal concepts, and your colored concept,, beautiful flow of colors you have going too, looking forward to seeing updates

07 July 2009, 06:48 PM
Hey Matt, :)
Great work! Very nice environment & mood! Like the architecture & the shape of the buildings; the "Corner Store" is looking cool! Very nice lighting! I guess, we are going to get a treat of a beautiful matte-painting, through this image! ;) Keep it up! Will be waiting for more updates!
07 July 2009, 06:55 PM
Thanks for all the great comments. I havent had much time to work on this because of freelance and I am also trying to get a matte painting demo reel together. I am actually thinking about changing the whole image into something more cartoonish. I might finish the environment just for personal work but I came up with an idea that I want to do for the challenge! So hopefully I will have some thumbnails in the next few days.
Thanks again for all the great crits and comments :)
07 July 2009, 08:46 PM
creative! like you style. Good luck :)
07 July 2009, 02:15 PM
I decided to change my idea. I really wasnt feeling the last idea in the secret agent theme. So I decided to go for something with a bit of humor. Still doing the rought layout so I hope to have another update soon.
