Hi there. Okay so I atlast got some time off to start this thing.
Ive been playing around with many ideas - theres so many possible situations to put a agent/spy theme in. I allways end up with a agents mission gone avry or bad. It seems to be the most interresting.
Maybe its more interresting to go for a more suble aproach, but for now this first atempt is to get into the mood of this challenge.
I definately think ill go for the more contrasty dark look.

Hehe Im kinda curious too. Right now its just a couple of boxes and a sphere. Maybe a human body - maybe its the cap-driver. Or maybe its something else hehe :)
Another thing which is kinda hard to see in this sketch is that he is sitting infront of a sever-lid which is taken off and he is putting a robe into the sever-hole.

The sewer manhole is a nice touch. It instantly conjures up all kinds of visual imagery.

CircusRobot: Yeah I thought it would be a cool story-teller to the picture.
I want to have a scene in the middle of a story. As the theme is agents, the picture is gonna be character-driven, but with objects, or secondary characters that tell a story of where the main-characters have come from, and where they want to go.

Playig around with the scene. Cant loose the idea of three agents dressed as cooks which get caught in a very bad moment.
Thinking of making a very curved pose for the two blurred figures in the front.

Hehe its kinda true. Now when you say it kinda reminds me of something from grim fandango too. Didnt think about it though - maybe I should look into it for some inspiration :D

tunes: hey thanks! I think your absolutely right. Ill add some dirt and scratches to the car too, like its just came out of a pretty bumpy ride. Im thinking that the car crashed into a road-hydrant nad the water is leaking into the sewer-hole-thingie.

The front cook with the gun in the hand. For not many of the shapes are only blocking, as is the hair and shaders. Playing around with a desaturated look, with a boost to give a redish hue.

It kind of reminds me of some of the earliest WB cartoons and old angular-stylized art in some children's books from the late 70's or early 80's.
But I've never seen that style before used for a "gritty" theme.

Im playing with some placement and camera angel. Furthermore Ive tried out some new color-sceme, controled by depth. Thought it would be cool to make a desaturated "burned" feel in the background, like the cooks has left or fled a "city on fire".
The front figures are a fast sketch at the moment, so they might be hard to make out, and identify. Im gonna use the two front blurred characters to frame the center. For now, im thinking of doing the background a bit more bright to have a better contrast between the two fron characters and the rest.
Still alot of modelleing to do.

On a sidenote, im eventually gonna add some nazi-flags etc. The cooks are agents of the french liberation, whos fighting the nazi-surpresors. The front characters might not be as "undefined" as they are now.

Looks beautiful, but I had trouble making out the suitcase. Stylized shapes and earthen colors made it hard to see some things.
If I may make a few Directorial Suggestions:
1) Move Cook with Gun out of the Silhouette of the car (to the Right of the Frame)
2) Move Camera also to the Right (leaving out Black space currently in Left of the above update) ... resulting in Cook with Gun in the Center of the image. The suitcase will be free of the Car's colors and the fire and stuff in the back can add drama to the Cook with the Gun.
3) Right Side of Picture can be given to "Man Partially Off-Screen" you had in previous concept drawings.
4) Man sitting in front of car can switch eye focus to Man Off-Screen.
But this piece is easily one of my faves.... :)

CGIPadawan: hi. Thanks for some good crit. I think your right with the silhouette of the front cook. I think I want to bring him more close to the camerat and do try out the stuff you pointed out.
Its some good ideas of placement and camera angles. Gotta truck on with it. Ill try out taking it to the right.
Im actually thinking of taking this to a tall format instead of a wide too. Could be a fun test.

i do prefer the last one. more clear and saturate. one important: background. your last pic give silent and emptiness background, makes the character more out. keep it up.

Well this one is a totally different mood from the one just before. Suitcase definitely more visible now that it's free of the car. :)
About your musings to make it vertical, this obviously improves placement for Third Reich banners. Not to mention the banners are a nice Black-White-RedBack theme that easily adds contrast to the nighttime environment.
Would also suggest adding black stamped SS/IronEagle style decal on the suitcase, with the German equivalent of "Top Secret" written on it. I know, that's a bit like spoonfeeding the audience. But the rule in blockbusters is "Show it to them. Then show it to them again." :P
In the previous update, I thought the French Chefs had set fire to a Nazi Banquet and were making a hasty getaway (hence the car has hit a lamppost and the fire). This latest one looks more like the banquet is ongoing and the Chefs are just smuggling something into the sewer. The car appears to be in pristine condition.
Are those out-of-focus arches tree branches?
Would suggest you make a return of the "man off-screen" character and make him obviously a SS/Brownshirt trooper. That would definitely take it home as the three tell the conflict: Nazi banners on buildings + Nazi markings on Suitcase + Nazi Trooper and Chef pointing guns at each other = Stolen Secret Documents!
It's like that scene in the "The Sound of Music" where the Von Trap family is trying to run from the Third Reich.... When they get out into the street, and the "police" are looking for them...
P.S.: Man sitting down near the car seems to have lost some of the facial features that he had with the update before. I liked his look in that one, he seemed more like a "freedom fighter" to me back in that update. Not sure if it's just lighting.

Im going onward here. Changed the background to be more black and hazy. Gonna add some slight fog to near the ground too eventually.
Ofcause this is still just a camera-blocking of the scene. The car, and characters are still very much not done :)
Im thinking of rotating the left gun so it will create a "triangle" with the other gun, in which the main character can stand. This could help the composition.
Furthermore, im gonna add a "business kinda looking"-man very much frigthened by the whole situation, standing behind the main chef, trying to hide as much as possible.
obviously added some blocked 3d-guys and modelled their phat guns. Maybe ill do one more type of gun for the left guy if theres time. Furthermore about guns, im thinking of hanging some machine-gun around the arm of the fron chef for extra ass-kicking sake.
Any input would be much appreciated.

Added a new character. An older guy. Right now he is only a blocked pose. Im thinking of making him look determined and pointing a gun at the right guy offscreen.
Still playing with colors and light.
and did some small amount of paintover on this one too to play around.

I like the new character. Is it possible for him to trade places with the guy in front of the car? The black bowler doesn't show up so well in front of the black sky (while a white chef's hat would.) Also, your last few updates have included the edge of the building directly behind the main chef guy. It's an awkward placement that makes him harder to read. He's got a building edge growing out of the top of his head! :D Hopefully you can nudge the composition so that he's either in front f mostly sky, mostly building, or some soft fade between like you had in some earlier comps. wick3dsono: Hey. Thanks for saying that you dont understand the guy who is stitting down. Its an old idea, which I kinda have been sticking too, but in the current situation he kills a good composition, and slow down the "pace of the picture". I think I might change him quiet alot.
walrus: I thiunk you have some good points. Ill definately swap places of the other cook and the old guy. Thay way, i will be hinting that the old guy is driving the red car (which he is) and the cooks are driving some yet-to-be-modelled older car. Ive been a little annoyed by the line of the building and the main cook too. Ill definately change that. Thanks.

another update here. Playing around with some of the input you people have come with. Trying to get away from the old idea, and instead focusing on the characters, and let their personality tell the story instead of their act (which is pretty straight forward now).
Im testing a little more desaturated look, still trying to get some yelow color into that background, and having the rest of the forground bluish, and gray from the slight dust. Eventually Ill do a pass in maya, but now its a quick PS paintover. Hope you like it.

your have created very strong and interesting characters and the scene it's very good also. I believe Waurus has pointed already, but the main character is creating some weird straight line with the building just behind it; maybe it just me, but it's a little distracting. Again, very good work.

yes! i love the character a lot,the last one is the best composition and situation,
walrus and uldferr is totaly right.it would be nice if the end of the building is about in the middle of the main character and the old man.i like the color as well.
Your concept looks awesome, great style and design on it. Like the environment, great mood.
The issue about the tangent between the middle character and the building was pointed :D Maybe you need to experiment a bit wit the poses, not too straight, to no look a bit stiff, and a bit more dynamics, only a comment :) Great work!! Cheers! :beer:

I made the first out of 3 houses, im gonna place to make the city. For now its the same building. Im gonna make some different chimneys and roof-things to put on the houses, and eventually make a spire of a church or something like that to place in the background.
Ive tryed to get away from the parallel lines, but its still there somewhat.
More to come later.

it is coming along nicely...
one suggestion: since it's a night-time image, maybe you don't have such strong fill lighting coming in from the right side? Everything looks very bright now... I think the image could do well with slightly moodier/ contrasty lighting.

So my laptop has begun to give up on the rendering, so Im allready beginning to make multiple layers for the color-layer... :(
anyways. Played with poses on the old guy. Still SO much stuff to do. Espeically modelling and shading.

only problem i see,
is that at first look the car on the left and the long briefcase kind of got mixed together, maybe make more space between them, distance the car a little or rotate briefcase toward bad guys.

Great update. I really like much the pose of the left guy. But I completely agree with NJA3d about the "mixing" of car and briefcase, maybe that's more a matter of color than of position.
Otherwise that's surely one of my prefered entry.

A little update.
Did some tweakin on some shaders, and got a little render-pipeline set up. Still not sure if I want to go with a more redish look or blue cold look..

I think the front of the red car is very dark. I want to fix that soon.
I tried to seperate the suitcase with the white car. Hope it worked. Furthermore, the red color should link it to the red car.
Im having plans of introducing a 4th character, but im not sure if it could work...
Eventually the white car is gonna be another car. For now its only a placeholder.
The first picture is tintet blue, while the other is redish. Dont know what is best. Lemme know what you think.

Please do not forget Nazi banners and possible markings on suitcase.
As I recall you need it for the story.
More important since the Villains are not at an angle where the Nazi armbands would have been visible.

i love the style of your art. its really fresh. not so serious like the others which is a good thing. the only thing i would comment on is the silhouette of the middle person. Its hard to spot but his arm is almost totally covered by his body. Especially his hand which cant be seen because it is behind his body. This makes it seem like the suitcase is floating. you might also consider rotating the suitcase so its in a more perspective view towards the camera this will break up the connection of the suitcase and the cane that his friend is holding. as now it seems like his cane is connected to the suitcase. well this is just some small things i picked up which maybe could help you out. its just my comments :) i still love ure style and execution of ure work :) keep it up! :D

I added some flags and a brigde. Furthermore i seperated the characters a little more.
Still need to model alot of stuff on the characters, since its still just dummy models.
Maybe the current position of flag/character is not good.. lemme know what you think.

Another update here.
Ive begun working on the front characters. Playing around with the leves of blur (which is currently not too strong, so i can show some small nazi-labels on their arms).
Furthermore I threw the picture on my hd tv to look at the gamma and contrast levels, but ill have to test it out on some computer monitors too, since im working on a laptop monitor which tends to overthrow eveything with brightness.
Would like to hear your feedback especially on the saturation and contrast levels on your monitors. I dont want it too be too saturated..

Regarding the color feedback: The colors are not very saturated (it looks realistically unsaturated) and the contrast can be higher if you wish (the bright areas explode on the cooks hats and rim light on the coooks' faces, however there are no deep black areas anywhere). I hope this helps with the calibration.

I really like your picture, nice mood and colors and great composition.
saturation and colors are perfect for me on my screen but the picture lacks of contrast I think.
just another little detail, the cook on the left, when I first look at the picture, I was misunderstanding about his legs' position. there is a black circle think on the background that begins at the same position that his hip and there is a shadow on the case that just begins at the end of that circle shape. just my two cents...
très belle image, j'espere que tu arrivera à obtenir ce que tu veux au niveau des couleurs et du contraste. bonne continuation. ;)

Hey Thomas, awesome image you have here, love your style, the color palette is pretty cool, it gives a sort of old-movie effect to me, just one suggestion: maybe you could give more contrast to the foreground where the cooker characters are standing, it should bring those more to the front. But it's just for me. Keep going to the final image :applause:

I worked a little bit, changing the poses of the hands and arms, modelleing some more stuff for them. Furthermore I added a different kind of blur to them, and glowed the highligts on the metal a little.
I allso changed the rim light, and the general colors on them, using a very broad AO to throw some brighter color on the flat regions of the geometry.

Here is the High Res:
and a small ToDO list so far:
- Change the old mans pose ad finish his geometry.
- Change the left cooks pose, and finish his geometry.
- finish the modelleing on the mid cook.
- Add more stones to the ground.
- Make a cloud pass with 3d or 2d.
- Add various objecs to the ground like sticks, a little water, and leaves. Maybe non-descript metalic objects etc.
- Make the window less reflective, and more dark.
- Make the car window more transparent, and less dark.
- change the color of the car behind the left cook, so it doesnt conflict with his shape, making this more easy to read.
- Rim light on the background buildings.
- Adding a slight wisp of smoke from the cigar of the front and left cook.
- Modelling more stuff on the cook characters and the old spy.
- Changing the suitcase to a more story-hinting objects, may it be a suitcase with nazi-signs on it, or a different object alltogether.
- Making the facade of the building underneath the moon destroyed from a bomb, with slight smoke.
- Change the placement of the red car to make the front of it more visible.
- Change the left front character so he dont cover the middle characters, and frame them better.
- Figure out what to do with the big nazi-flag just behind them. Maybe Removing it to show more of the backdrop, and add flags to the backdrop.
- Adding small air-particles to the front.
- Test a more direct angle POV.
well thats whats comes to mind.
Maybe you have some ideas and imput too?

Right now the resolution is only half here. im thinking of eventually render the picture in 3000x1200, or maybe even 6000x2400 if theres time and computer power for that.

Began working on some of the notes i put forth in last post.
I allso changed the suitcase. Im thinking of adding more stuff to the forground so its easier to read the content.

Awesome progress, I thought it look good before I went on vacation, but these latest updates looks really good.
Ain't got much to crit, except maybe the old man's arm look kinda weird, seem very short. Anyway its looking great, keep it up ;)

cool progress on ure work man. i can see u alot of stuff happening already! looking real nice. but one thing i spotted. the middle chef he his holding a gun but his hand seems to be from his other arm? because his thumb is facing away from his body.im not sure but maybe its intended to be like that. other than that colors looking real nice.

Hey... Yeah I know. I simply hadnt the time and dedication to finish it. Its so hard to sit around and work with this all the spare time for more than a month. Oh well...

Oh My... this was one of my favorites!! :cry: The characters are so interesting. It looks SOOO complete! Sorry you didn't finish it in time but I am really glad you shared your process with us. Excellent regardless of submission status! AWESOME!
