From the Pixar Renderman website:

I can't seem to create this in Maya, I set base and tip width to be the same but can't make it look like this

any ideas?

What precisely is the part that you cannot reproduce ?
I made a quick test using the default maya renderer and seem to be able to get those thick strands.
Is your problem coming from the lighting or the shadows ?

the first pic looks more like curve extrusions.

not sure in rfm, but in prman you could add attributes to curves, to tell the renderer how to draw them, thiner, thicker, flat... it's just a matter of telling the renderer how to draw those curves

as Br1 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=2686) said... its all about lightning..

add some light rig... some very suddle HDRI... AO... GI, FG...

and you'll get that.

if you're good at lightning... you can get that even with maya software.
