I love the model but the background does it no justice. Try a different color background which I think will give your model more justice especially the jacket. Hope this helps out. Great model once again.

absolutely amazing stuff!

just wondering does he reacts to lights at all? I mean is he mapped with photo (includes all the high lights, shadow, bumps..), or custom color, bumb, spec, reflection maps which makes him ready to be interact with all 3d elements in a scene.

This is the best 3D ever...bar none!! Wow, when I woke up this morning I didn't expect to see a photorealistic morpheus model. There isn't much more to say! If you don't have a job in the industry then I feel sorry for humanity.

Well I am humbled...right down to my socks.
When I first saw the pic posted here in the forum I thought "OK, what's this noobie doing posting a photoshop trace-N-paste as a chracter work" :hmm:
Then I clicked your link and checked out the progress pics on your site. Then I still thought that you mapped a photo on a generic head shape :p
Then I saw your untextured model and the wire frames...and then I came too on the floor with my mouse clenched tightly in my fist. :D

Without repeating all that's been said already, that is some fantastic work. It is one of the few examples that I have seen that are ACTUALLY unbelieveable. It's so good it looks like a doctored 2D photograph...not even photorealistic 3D.

You nailed it...now just send that picture as a postcard with the URL to your project pages on your site to any VFX company you want and you'll be hired.

Congrats

07 July 2003, 02:26 AM
nice work

but before I bow down, I'd like to point out to the others that the image is much like http://whatisthematrix.warnerbros.com/rl_img/poster_laurence_full.jpg. I'd think it's safe to say you had the model and mapped the face image on with a few tweaks.

I wonder if a closeup might fall apart.

nice job though :p

That is incredible work

I have absolutely no crits whatsoever! You should apply to ESC - this beats the CG doubles in Matrix Reloaded hands down.

Amazing stuff, this is probably one of the best pieces of work that I have ever seen on CG Talk :applause:

Unreal...your skill is unreal..congrats..though your layout on the wires seems rather odd..ie, mouth are modeled like they can't be opened and some very weird distribution around the head..was this intended or are you still new to modeling? If so, congrats x 2.

What bothers me is this point :
the head lighting is different from the body lighting.
That's why i'd like to see the head with a completly different lighting.

On the other hand, the body modeling is really cool.

Libor
07 July 2003, 08:15 AM
The model itself is great - my hats off! But the baked lights in the textures do not amaze me.

I really dont like hi-poly stuff with "camera mapped" photos.

Not very usefull for any production at all...

What about making some real shaders for him?? Then it would be flawless:rolleyes:

Savage_Henry
07 July 2003, 08:29 AM
Unreal....

You deserve a trophy...or three.

Wiro
07 July 2003, 08:31 AM
I find the mesh amazing and if the textures are actually full shaders and not just prelit textures then even better. But what does bug me is that you had the skill to make this amazing model but decided to just recreate a movieposter instead of making a truly unique piece.
I'd love to see what you could have done putting Morpheus in an action scene or cool pose you yourself came up with.

I know it's tempting to recreate something just to see how close you can get it. But in the end all you do is still to create a copy albeit a flawless one.
Hope that didn't come across as harsh because the model itself is really great

Thank you so much for all your replies!

This 3d model was made only for some still images (that's why i've modelled only the upper body).

I modelled it on Max 5 with polygon editing.

here's an un textured version:

07 July 2003, 09:28 AM
Only a question. The texture looks just like a photo. As a photo it is yet iluminated.... Would it work in others views and enviorements? Is allways lighted the same way?

I think you have the mesh detailed enought to use his own volume for rendering. Are you using some skin shadre?

Thanks for your time

So when is he getting put in the CGtalk gallery?
If you goto SIGGRAPH now you will be a hero.

07 July 2003, 11:47 AM
Well it looks fantastic.........however......theres something wrong....cant put my finger on it....but looks like Camera Mapping to me .....lets see him in a different setting with different lighting, there just seems to be a little glitch in the matrix.
some up close large renders from a few angles with a default light setup should sort it.......
(waits to be thrown out the building..........

Lots of the answers to the many questions in here can be found on the site:

http://www.getbuzzy.com/modeling/71b.jpg [shows the original* mapping]

http://www.getbuzzy.com/modeling/morpheus_info.htm

etc

I like the modeling but dunno about the textures, they serve well for the poster but would be cooler to put that much ability elsewhere where it's most creative :(.

Thank you for all your replies! :buttrock:

Couldn't reply the last days because got problems with my web connection.

A lot of people asked me if was just a frontal mapping projection of a photo.

No it isn't.

The face material hasn't got a self illumation.
It receives lights and shadows.

The diffuse map is made from a picture of laurence fishburne and then highly modified in photoshop. I've removed the most of the shadows in it, and set a default lighting.
I started with a planar map, and then unwrap it.

polymath>

The picture "71b.jpg" which shows distortions on the top of the head is a process pic, not final mapping.

Here's a new lighting of the face (lights on the sides):

The first two in your wallpaper section, the head looked like it was copied straight from the Matrix poster, the 3rd one looks different. I took the one from the Matrix site and layed it over top of the first two in your wallaper section its perfect! A perfect match! The Matrix poster was a bit bigger but when sized down it matches the one you posted.

Its exactly like the real thing! Exactly!...

Well, hat's off to you m8:)

I agree with LilDragon with the award because, regardless of any
quality issues this particular model may or may not have,
"this Boy's got skilz!"

So, in a production environment, he would excel and fit in quite nicely.

Sounds & looks like he has a full grasp of the techniques and issues that arise when doing digital-double / character modeling/detail work.

Great job m8!

whats ESC? and his origional post is totally a photo i am convinced. if it isn't can't he put the model in different positions or something? using photographic images for the textures isn't cool, thats just my opinion.

Check the link to his site, 5 maybe more wireframe's there. I also think if photographic textures can make models look as stunning this (if it uses em, that is) then i'm all for them.

I believe in one of his 2 posts he said he used 3D studio max, in poly edit mode. Kinda hard to miss since he has only responded like twice ;).

Great modeling, I think you should finish it and do some other poses too!

This looks so much more real than the digital Neo that they used in some of the fight sequences of The Matrix: Reloaded. They should have had you do Neo!

Real? What is real? how do you define real? If it's something you can smell, or touch, then real is just, electric signals interperted by your brain...
Wow, great work man... I dislocated my jaw after viewing your website... You should've worked for WB! :( They used 3d models for all their fight scenes and such, from the second movie on... ;) should have finished this earlier, and they might have just hired you :)

It looks good, but it's not worth all the positive critiques I feel, although it looks good, it's mainly because you used projections, just project an image on a mesh to make it look like the real thing. It's also the image used for the promotional posters I believe... you may want to look at this link:

http://www.xmg.ro/mihai/img/bruce_willis_wip4d.jpg

We are just looking at a picture, projected on a mesh, not at a piece of 3D, how good it may look.

Credit goes to Mihai Angelescu who actually did texturing and shading.

Although I feel you cheated on shading/texturing, you were good on your way with the modeling... Just tweak some more, the chin for example should be adjusted a little, also the forehead needs ajustment... mostly in the depth axis ofcourse...
