View Full Version : Nina jumping off a building

06 June 2009, 03:25 AM

I thought i would start a thread to keep my progress as i try and animate my Ninja jumping off a building. I needed an animation where i could test out and make sure IK/FK snapping for the legs worked 100%, so i decided on this little piece.

The Start (
The End (
Chosing Cmaera Angle (

So far i am working on trying to get the timing correct, placing moving holds and getting all the poses down. Feel free to C&C on anything. It is still early in the process, but any feedback is helpful.

And here is the youtube reference i used to get things started.

Glad I just animate, and not jump off buildings like that.hehe

Your begining poses look good but your losing a lot of motion in the hips. It seems like your in a rough state and haven't started overlaping the actions yet but I can only critique what I see so here we go.

When blocking out your poses make sure your thinking about the weight transfers. Your movement has to start from somewhere and the legs should follow.

As I step through your shot there a few times where his weight isn't over his leg and seems to be off balance. Focus on the hips.

As for his squat you might want to try a different pose.

When your ninja starts to lean back I would think he would begin to push off with his legs. At this point his hips look to stiff.

Make sure you watch ref video. There's tons out there on youtube key word urban ninja. Now the don't jump off 20 building like your character but the do some amazing stuff I'm sure you can use.

Also you can pull the video off youtube using I believe thats the website. That way if you find a video you like you can scrub through it using quicktime.

Hope this helps

Sosa out!

Thanks a lot for taking the time to write some very good feedback. I will take him back to stepped curves and work on some poses, and really watch the hips a lot more(an area i know i dont focus enough on) and make sure he is not off balance(maybe adding a few more inbetweens) or that movement happen in the wrong order according to weight etc. Really appreciate it.

For the lean back i thought i would start with slowly leaning back untill gravity pulls him down too much, then he kicks off. But I will see what looks best here.

and yeah, the ref clip is really awesome, and scary.hehe.

I also got som yamakasi referance to look at, so will spend some more time looking at them and go back and start fixing things before i go further.

Thanks again

Update Clip (

Here is a little update. Tried some new poses and some alterations to the jump. Still fixing poses and adding inbetweens. Its all Spine keys atm, keep going back between blocked and splined to try and fix things. Still heaps to do.

and the thread title should be Ninja, not Nina, but can't seem to change that.hehe

Here is a new playblast of the beginning.

Animation (

Atm I am looking at moving holds(if its too much, too little, too uneven etc) and adding some movement in the hips and other areas to try and make it look better. I have not started offsetting keys, wanted to try and see what I can do before I start that. which I think I will soon.

The leap is still early stages.

Just trying to learn and find an animation rutine that works for me and that I feel comfortable with, and hopefully will give good results in the end. I try to think of the principles, so hope that will show in the end too.

As always, any C&C is most welcome, even though its still rough and not much happening yet:)

you need to compress the spring up an rotate back, what u have is he should be jus falling down

Thanks for the reply. I am still looking at different way of starting the leap. Atm i was looking at slowly leaning back and then takes off as gravity will pull him straight down. but still a bit undecided on the best look.

Here is another minor update. Just been playing around with small things. Took a break to go back and play with the rig a little.

will see if i get time to split up the start and finish with more close ups later.

the landing is yet to be started on.

Here is a update. Had major blendshape issues with the rig, so got stuck on that, without a solution atm. So went back to animating.

Here are some new changes. 3 clips with different angles and close ups. The end of the landing is still the roughest area, but the rest i hope i managed to get decent timing, and the poses work, and started polishing a little.

any CC is as always appreciated and welceome.

Thanks for watching

your gettin the right idea but you need to arc him the jump going back is too linear

Thanks for the feedback, i noticed i hadn't really done much with the preparation for the jump. Focused on the other areas i forgot to play with that.

Here is a very rough change i did. tried to build up some more anticipation before the jump and add a bit more arc as he leaves the platform

didn't have access to Quicktime pro in this quick update.
