This's my graduate project. Please give me some advice.

05-09-2002, 01:45 PM
awesome skill!
very happy to see ur work here, cant wait the next one.:buttrock: :buttrock:

05-09-2002, 01:52 PM
wow! I can't find anthing that I think you should change in this picture, it's a very fine piece of art as it is, 5 stars!

05-09-2002, 02:02 PM
very nice work. I don`t have any suggestions except to keep up the great work. And I think this peice is to good to leave it as a still. Maybe bring the statue to life with some slight animation. You have a very nice peice of work here, take it to the next level. You obvisouly have the skills.

05-09-2002, 02:07 PM
Very nice model! The only suggestions I can come up with are... Add some more detail to the rock that the statue is sitting on. The part to the lower right looks very polygonal to me. Also, I think this model would be a great candidate for a radiosity rendering and maybe even subsurface scattering! Do you have access to software w/these features? Keep up the good work!

05-09-2002, 02:54 PM
Very nice!

Agree with R2: The stone needs more details...

05-09-2002, 03:07 PM
WOW!!!! the character is very clean, cool modeling, only the stone, as the others said......

05-09-2002, 05:16 PM
You could add some more debris and dust around the base of it. The chips of stone you have don't seem like enough. But great model. You might want to add a very slight reflection in the final render, as that statue seems very smooth. Good work.

05-09-2002, 05:37 PM
Wow, that is really beautiful :applause: :applause:
Amazing work - the only crit I would have is exactly the same as what R2D2 has already pointed out. Otherwise it's absolutely stunning and I'm sure you'll get an A+!!

05-09-2002, 06:55 PM
As I said in the Toeng.com, your work is absolutely stunning. I like the model and I especially like the lighting :)

05-09-2002, 07:35 PM
excellent. You should texture it too, or if not, at least lower the specularity and reflection levels on the statue, i don't think that a sculpture would shine and be as reflective as such.

05-09-2002, 08:05 PM
impressive indeed. lovely bit of modelling skill here.

just think you now need to work on your texturing. it has got a marbly feel but not enough. because of this i think the specularity and reflections could be highered slightly. it's almost like soap stone. if it's stone and not marble then do as diazgl says - turn down shininess.

but for god sake do texture it. will really make it.

i'd also work on some of your modelling bits. - the 'table' it's sitting on looks sinister and some of those chips look dodgy.

i would'nt use sss or hdri as there's absolutely no point in this model, but a nice bit of gi and radiosity would set it off a treat.

all said tho, cracking piece.

05-09-2002, 08:42 PM
WOW THAT IS BEAUTIFUL!!! I LOVE THE MODELLING, IS THAT POLYGONS? if it is could you post some Wireframe of the polymesh without iterations?
anyways BRAVO!!!!!! :applause:

05-10-2002, 03:18 AM
nice work:applause:

05-10-2002, 03:29 AM
:D :D :D

But seriously, really good work!

05-10-2002, 06:18 AM
Can't add anything that hasn't already been said so just saying .. That is a great piece ............and also a jolt to your memory to maybe tell us a few details. :)

05-10-2002, 07:55 AM
I must say I like the "lowpoly stone" as it is.. it makes a great touch to the image, you don't need more details to it imo.

05-10-2002, 10:53 AM
Thank for your advice.
i'm not good at texture, so i will work hard at it.:p
i did it for a girl, but she didn't like me, wowowo

05-10-2002, 11:07 AM
COOOOL!!!! :buttrock: :buttrock:
Very beautyfull. Fine concept aswell!

Okay, since this is for your graduation, I think what you want is total perfection. I stared at this piece for a long time, and the only thing I dare humbly say, is that his left hand and the rose might be a bit concflicting with each other. Maybe let it rest on it or make the hand more "grabbing".

You deserve every bit of your diploma. You got summa-cum-laude from me anyway: here's 5 stars.

jeroentje

05-10-2002, 11:15 AM
the modeling before smooth.

05-10-2002, 01:54 PM
Dear Jack
Your angel is fantastic and I join happily the praise concert.
It's damned good for an angel !!

05-10-2002, 02:30 PM
I have to agree with jeroentje on the hand and rose conflict, Maybe your compostition is slightly askew, you could try minutly rotating the whole Statue model to avoid the hand covering the rose so directly, this should be quite painless.

Other thatn that a beutifully sculpted digital model.

Stoppy

As a sneeky request any chance of a loy poly close up on the face ?

05-10-2002, 04:56 PM
Really Cool!!

The only crit I have is the stone he's sitting on. It's too smooth. Make it more chiseled.

05-10-2002, 06:15 PM

I really like it!!! it is GREAT! Congratulations!!!
I would point out that white marble in sculptures is more like yellowish not blueish, but it can be a light effect of course.
Anyway... very beatiful!

05-10-2002, 07:42 PM

ditto R2D2, the stone.........
the base of the statue too....
and the material needs to be a weeeeeeeee bit motttly,
but seriously,
very very nice

05-11-2002, 02:09 AM
I'm glad that you like it.

05-11-2002, 02:29 AM
beautiful work there, i like it alot

05-11-2002, 02:47 AM
Absolutely amazing. Beautiful stuff.

I agree the surface could be tweaked a bit, subsurface scattering would be very cool..but that's minor really. Same with throwing a few more polys into the large slab it's on. In the face of such a brilliant model, it's really hard to nitpick :)

05-11-2002, 05:31 AM
Eh... hope you don't think I'm bugging you.
But I think you forgot the wooden hammer, and make the chissel a bit bigger (maybe some gold-leaf in the letters?)

You asked for advice...

05-11-2002, 07:49 PM
aaaaaaawesome :):bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

05-12-2002, 11:24 AM
WOW - Nice !!:wavey:  :wip:

How did you model the wings and the small round folds it has...some special technik ???

05-12-2002, 12:03 PM
:bounce: Great!!!

05-13-2002, 05:06 AM
no special technic, you must add Edge or delete Edge for shape that you want.

05-13-2002, 06:38 AM
Great piece man! :buttrock:

What software do you use?

05-13-2002, 08:29 AM
Great work ...amazing.

insanelight: He/She uses Maya :p

05-13-2002, 08:32 AM
 Beautiful modelling, Nice lighting too ;)

05-13-2002, 10:30 AM
Simply beautiful! :)

05-13-2002, 12:06 PM
:bounce: Great Work.
There is only one thing that Iwould point out and that is the fold where the right leg and the belly meet looks a little funny to me.
It might be the angle or the highlight. It looks to me like it's going inside a little to much.
I would think that the belly would fold over and create a little overlap

just being picky, it's already much better than anything I've done.
really nice work.
How long did it take?

05-13-2002, 01:04 PM
Very nice work. I few comments that mught add something to an otherwise well done piece. Some underlying glow (sub surface scattering) would be nice. Marble is almost like frosted glass and picks up and diffuses light into it's surface. This can be worked at/faked by applying a falloff self illumination (but don't go over board). Also the lighting could have a bit more contrast and maybe add some subtle grain/bump to the surface (or more than what's there if you already have some). The fact that he looks like he's keeping a secret sort of begs for a bit more mystery to the setup. Think in terms of classic paintings since this is classical subject. Keep up the good work- you're already ahead of the pack!

05-13-2002, 03:50 PM
Nicely done, quite a romantic feel to it. It reminds me of the angels from the carvings in "the Haunting". So yeah, now is the time for the texture... all got to say is be creative, it will be nice to see a combination of flesh and marble.
If you like challenges... this could be the beginning of one of those awesome renaissance paintings, maybe you could model that girl that you mention... then you just can show it to her ... for the next valentines!!

everybody said it already, great job...

the thing that 'feels' a bit strange to me, is that there is only large/rough pieces of rock laying around (like you would expect when you start chiseling), but the statue is finished and polished... I would expect some more dust/sand laying around, maybe some VERY subtle volumetric in the lighting...

just a thought

05-13-2002, 04:07 PM
very nice!!!

no special technic, you must add Edge or delete Edge for shape that you want.

What is add edge/delete edge?

ps. I still think the piece of rock he's siting on is too smooth and amorphic. Should look more chiseled. That way you can explain the scattered bits too (BTW I don't mind them).

05-14-2002, 01:31 AM
:bounce: :bounce: haha very nice

05-14-2002, 03:37 PM
You've done a great job!!!
I want to know how long did it take you to finish it?
Are you in IDMT?

05-15-2002, 06:28 AM

Thank you!!
i will do it like what is your say. :wavey:

05-15-2002, 06:47 AM

yes, I am studying in Idmt.

I spend more than 3 weeks to finish it.:p

05-15-2002, 02:40 PM
Thank you for your reply.
Something I want to know more about your work is, do you have any reference picture or do you just design it by yourself.
You know in China we have a lot of great modelers but they are just modelers, that is to say they can make models for others but can't design their own.
That is why I ask you the question.

05-16-2002, 01:45 AM

yes, i have one reference picture.
I haven't enough originality to design it ,now i just want to bulid that model like the picture.

05-16-2002, 01:41 PM
Thank you for your patience.
Although I've asked you a lot of questions, I have to bother you once again. I believe you will be a real modeling master in China CG world, so I want to keep contact with you. Do you mind leaving your email address?

05-17-2002, 01:01 AM
i really want to know how to creat it cool:eek:

05-17-2002, 01:08 AM
welcome email to me!

05-17-2002, 06:00 AM
very very good!!!

05-17-2002, 08:35 AM

Fantastic bit of work !!!! Would be nice to see it rendered in FR with some Sub Surface Scattering...............

05-17-2002, 03:58 PM
;) :p

05-20-2002, 04:22 AM
Jacktan: fantastic work! :applause: The modeling and lighting are perfect. There is one thing you could try, that will be really easy since you are using Maya. Try adjusting the translucency on the shader for the statue. Looking at the chisel it seems to me that the stone is a bit too opaque for it's scale. Maybe map a marble type texture to the translucency node for some variation in the levels. I wouldn't put any other textures on this model except maybe a very subtle bumpmap to show small chisle marks (since it's still so new that there's chunks on the ground). Other than that it's perfect. The slight "made by man" irregularaties in the model, and the studio-style lighting are ... well ... perfect.

Oh yeah, forget about that chick that you made this for since she could've cared less. :annoyed: You can rub it in her face when you are a world-famous 3D artist. ;)

05-20-2002, 07:32 AM
Thank you so much!!
I will work hard more at 3d, And I hope I have more chances to study in USA to improve my skill, after serval years.
One adage in Chinese: make sadness turn into power.

05-24-2002, 10:23 AM
what a lovely angel,good work:thumbsup:

05-24-2002, 03:55 PM
really good!! I am more an animator then modeler, but I think that there are some extra unnecessary edges, and mabey you could even out those polys on the forehead. Looks awesome!

05-24-2002, 07:24 PM
10/10, this is my score for your model :applause:

05-24-2002, 08:51 PM
Was it rendered in maya too?

05-25-2002, 12:18 AM
Great job! I think the stone its sitting on is a little too smooth. besides that it looks awesome. :airguitar

05-25-2002, 02:02 AM
yes , it was rendered in maya. i used 7 spotlights.

05-25-2002, 02:14 AM

Yes, the stone is too smooth. I will give it a bump texture
when I have time off. Now I'm busying in a training of morph target. You will see the animation before long. :)

The model of the angel is really nice, however if the surface would be a bit more gritty it would fit into the enviroment better...

06-17-2002, 01:37 AM
add bump textrue.

06-17-2002, 09:18 PM

06-17-2002, 09:35 PM
you really rock !!!! perfect modelling !!! :applause: :applause: :applause:
I got some doubts about the lil rocks under the sculpture and the big rock where the angel stands...
improve the scene around the angel and it will be MORE THAN PERFECT !!!!

can I see a wireframe version ?

06-18-2002, 03:59 AM
Thanks for your comment.

The wireframe is on page 2. :)

09-28-2002, 10:13 PM
Thats great..

Man this woman realy break your heart...
make the statue getting to life and getting mad so you can make it killing the woman...

09-29-2002, 07:21 AM
the model just be wonderfull, i don't like only the lights...
