View Full Version : Mental Ray toon shaded renders much darker than Maya Software

I'm working on a project that involves toon shading, and rendering in mental ray is not working out very well. All of the colors look dull and gray compared to the Maya Software renders. We set the colors just using the Solid Shader's Out Color and they're all very saturated, bright colors, but they won't show up in mental ray. Here's an example:

Is there anything I can do to correct this? I've tried playing with the gamma and other settings but I'm not terribly skilled at mental ray, so it just amounted to "click-test-reclick-new click-test" which isn't getting me anywhere.

It's most likely a tone mapper compressing the colors... I don't think thare is a way to by pass the tone mapper if you need one, but you can certainly tweak it. Another way may be to assign color values above 1.0.

You need to gamma-correct the colors as well.

Yes, put a gamma node set to 0.455 for your color.
