 thats amazing!!!

With all that armor and such it looks like it would be incredibly difficult if not impossible to ride that board down a hill

ALso there is no apparent texture on his grey/green pants making it look flat and cgish

07-17-2003, 09:16 AM
so i think this isn't human :D
i think this is fantastic work, i love that fur, or i think i love everything on it...
exept thos arms and it his skin?...tho it looks kinda simple or too clean...i mean it looks just one coloured or something...

yeah...will we see this fully animated then in your demoreel? just rotate animation? the way...the heads of that board, i can see sharp this meant to be that way..or should it be rounded?

07-17-2003, 09:27 AM
Awsome awsome work. I love the design of the character. I took a stroll over to your site and love all the work youve done so far. Keep up the amazing job.

07-17-2003, 09:40 AM
Probably can't really cut snow with a board edge like that. If he falls at least he's got the armor, althought he's quite likely to fall due to it as well...;)

But of course the logistics of it all don't have to be a problem at all, since well hé, what happens to Spidermans webropes after he has passed a building? or how come Superman can fly with that outfit?

Anyhow great charcter, would love to see more,... animated if possible.

07-17-2003, 11:16 AM
That's very nice but why is he "flying"? It seems he's floating..

07-17-2003, 11:20 AM
Beautiful Fetus! im really fan of this job ;)
give us pleasure again in the future

07-17-2003, 11:21 AM
mhhh...compared to my memory of the former snowbird i think you would do him a favour if you let him go without that mask...i think he's got more character without it

just my 0.02$

07-17-2003, 11:22 AM
very very good , i like your design

07-17-2003, 11:23 AM
great job fetus!!!

nice character and some really lovely renders...

-can´t wait to see your reel:thumbsup:

how about a wire for people?

07-17-2003, 11:27 AM
interesting

07-17-2003, 11:31 AM
Wow! Amazing character with great amount of detail.

My crit is for the snowboard, it just doesn't look very functional, it has a sidecut radius that goes outwards and not inwards which will make it hard to turn. Plus the characters heels are sticking to far out on the heelside, he would get instant heeldrag to wipeout on heelside turns.

"Do unto others before they do unto you"

07-17-2003, 11:34 AM
Beautiful work dude, cant wait to see the reel.

07-17-2003, 11:36 AM
how renderer do you used in this superb picture?

07-17-2003, 11:41 AM
Great work fetus!! amazing détails!

07-17-2003, 11:52 AM
Excellent buddy, just excellent ! It jus t lacks a background now  :wavey:

07-17-2003, 11:52 AM
about time :P
no wonder considering the freakishly amount of detail :D

excelent work:applause:

07-17-2003, 12:01 PM
Hey great job. I really like the lighting. That character is unique. Keep it up.

07-17-2003, 12:11 PM
Awesome !!

07-17-2003, 12:29 PM
yeah my friend:buttrock: can't wait to see your reel.

07-17-2003, 12:31 PM
really great work man, i like the design and the modelling is great!

07-17-2003, 01:26 PM
I like the renders a lot. Great job. However, teher is no way this character will ever snowboard if you position him on his board the way you did in the last picture.
The charcter need to stand in the middle of the board and most snowboarders have there feet a bit in an angle
For example:

Nice job anyway.

07-17-2003, 01:29 PM
Hey Fetus,

I don't know why people keep on critisizing your snowboard or the way you dressed him according to if he would be able to snowboard in real life...THIS IS ART FOLKS!!!

I think it is completly fantastic. The modeling and the "Inuit" designs you gave your piece really shines through. Great work, a visual candy for me. thanks

07-17-2003, 01:49 PM
Great Design ! Love that ! :)

07-17-2003, 01:52 PM
I just looked through your entire WIP thread.

You, man, have got some skills (and a whole lot of patience ;) )

I'd love to see him in an action pose and that cityscape finished

07-17-2003, 02:08 PM
very original model... a other good artist to link :arteest:

07-17-2003, 02:22 PM
I like the design of the character. The arms and Legs are pretty simple in contrast. Maybe a bit more muscled detail or some sort of fiberious texture on them, stains or something to bring them up to the level of the armor you have. Nice though. Im not concerned with the logistics of his suit vs the ability to snowboard while wearing it.. its FANTASY!! so... Im a fan. great job.

07-17-2003, 03:36 PM
This is freaking RIDICULOUS!!!

How am I suppose to compete as an artist when you guys are constantly blowing me away with these killer designs!!!

I hate you. I hate you. I hate you!!! LOL

Thanks for BLAZING the path!!! or should I say snow trail!!!

Love the eskimo feel.

07-17-2003, 03:40 PM
amazing man, i love the way the guy carries around the snowboard in the first pic and that fur is rediculous,
great job

07-17-2003, 03:51 PM
omg what an awsome design and modeling skill. can i see the wire?

07-17-2003, 04:06 PM
it reminds me of one of the models seen in Batman Returns (?), where Waine has loads of life-size characters from all over the world.

Great work, not so sure about the 'scate board.

Well Done

07-17-2003, 04:26 PM
 ..............sooooo......Cooooooooooooooooool

the equipment is very cool!!

07-17-2003, 04:47 PM
the board itself feels half done..... then it's all good :)

07-17-2003, 05:05 PM
wow cool model! very clean modeling
can't wait to see your finished reel:drool:

07-17-2003, 05:18 PM
as a snowboarder, i have to agree with the others.
The bindings have to be in the board, right now almost half the boot is out the board. This will seriously prevent the board from functioning properly especially while turning and brakeing.

I think this is important because the whole character tells a story, there is a background to the character to make him more believeable. Like he is wearing thick clothes because he is not accustomed to the cold weather, and wearing a mask because he cannot breathe the thin mountain air...etc.

You don't just throw in any elements you think will make the character look "cool". There has to be a certain amount of research done.

I've heard people submitting a character design without proper research and get totally slammed("this is pathetic...etc").

This is just my opinion in order to improve your demo reel.

07-17-2003, 05:29 PM
I wonder that that turtle shell on his back.

07-17-2003, 05:30 PM
Fetus, turned out awesome man!! Great job. Once again you amaze me with your work.:buttrock:

07-17-2003, 07:20 PM
Hey Thank you all for the fantastic response and also for the front page plug, that made my day and then some!! :D
I think I need to address some concerns about his outfit/story/background history. For starters the Snowbioards DON'T snowboard on snow. The board is used for FLYING, along with the backback/jetpack to keep them up in the air. They surf the air. I should have mentioned that in my first post but that info is contained in the Work In Progress thread ( I definatly agree about the body suit needing a slight bump or texture, the board could also use some scratches or dirt and I'll probably do that for my reel. Also, all of my characters have stories and backgrounds to go along with them and this guy is no different....spending a month on a character gave me alot of time to think about his origins , come up with a story and figure out what all his gear is for. I'll post that along with some wireframes and a shot of him without the mask tonight when I get home from work. I hope that will explain some things about his armor, outfit and purpose.
Again I'd like to thank you all for the fantastic feedback!!! I always love reading your comments and critics!!!

07-17-2003, 07:33 PM
Brilliant design + very very impressive modeling.

I agree with some of the comments on the board: it looks blobby, unfinished (ouch, you can see the cilinder segments of the edge of the board  ).

Dirty him up a bit and work a bit more on the board and will be killer.

Awesome work nontheless of course, very inspiring! 9.8 / 10

07-17-2003, 07:48 PM
:buttrock:

07-17-2003, 07:49 PM

07-17-2003, 11:41 PM
Ive been following your WIP and I think you have amazing creativity but im a bit let down by the way you have posed him.

From the weird way hes hovering to the weird stance on the board. I think he deserves better. :D

Excellent model, excellent design....

07-17-2003, 11:56 PM
No crits really's very original design.. I guess the pose and background could be better

07-18-2003, 12:06 AM

07-18-2003, 06:45 AM
I'm not sure it these points were addressed earlier, i'm too lazy to read the whole thing. But I read in the beginning some comments were made about the board not being functional and the armor keeping the character from being able to ride it properly...

As anyone can see that's the new titanimumium armor which, not only being feather-light, but it also has a built-in microscopic gyroscopic balancing device that actually assists him with balance.

And the snowboard is obviously the cutting edge Swedish designed locomotoloco board created by Sven the Hammer's also futuristic polymer design as an actual hovercraft board...see, no need to actually "cut edges" in the snow..that's for dinosaur riders...

Glad I could clear that up for everyone...

07-18-2003, 06:58 AM
  I like it very much man!!! I see your taste for many small ornaments and organic designs in it's prime...very cool work and fantastic renders...only thing missing now is a cool background.

Hope to see more of your work soon.

....have fun!

07-18-2003, 07:59 AM
This is flat out amazing. Detail is of the essence in this thats a nice pic

07-18-2003, 08:41 AM
Without the mask :

Cage #1 :

07-18-2003, 08:42 AM
Cage #2 :

Cage #3 :

Some technical info about this piece..

Software: Maya and Photoshop for textures
Render : maya default (I would have used mental ray but I couldn't get the fur to work with it)
Fur: Maya fur with lots of tweaking...
Poly Count : too many for my system :)
Machine: PIII 800, 512ram, Elsa Gloria II 64 video card

I can't thank you all enough for the kind words!! I won’t get into much about his story but here’s a little tidbit. The Snowbioards (snowbird + snowboard) live at the top of mile high cliffs. They use their fancy equipment to hunt the Gizzards ( that live in the lush rainforests at the bottom of these extremely high cliffs. Snowbioards are a very ruthless species caught up in an extremely decorative lifestyle.

Thank you all again for your continued support, kind comments and helpful critic!!!

Cheers to everyone and model upward!!!

07-18-2003, 09:32 AM
Wow Amazing work! :buttrock:
I really love the modelling:thumbsup:
and as well the texturing is awesome:applause:

Good work !!!

07-19-2003, 08:18 AM
Thanks jungle_Tintin!!

Here's a look at the spec maps used for this character...drawn in pen then adjusted in ps..

07-20-2003, 05:33 AM
Lookin good! Do his arms or legs bend at the joints? I'd love to see a few poses! :arteest:

07-20-2003, 02:47 PM
Hey clot! thanks for the response. He is rigged but posing this fellow turned out to be a challenge with all that armor. Here's one with a bit more of a pose...

07-20-2003, 09:14 PM
I was talking about a bigger background dude ! :p

07-20-2003, 09:47 PM
I really love this character! your references must be the size of the rockie mountains. before you textured the pants i thought they looked better simplified cause sometime details can be overdone. maybe you should just go back to that and just dirty things up a bit. you said their viscious creatures why not add some dried blood stains. but its only a suggestion. your definatley on my wall of fame, good work!

07-20-2003, 10:15 PM

That is easily your finest work yet...

you rock my socks you lil bitch...

07-26-2003, 12:01 AM
now that really good work... Amazing stuff..

07-26-2003, 05:35 AM
what was the rendering time on that beaut piece of work?

07-26-2003, 09:33 AM
I just have to say I think this whole idea of snowboids hunting gizzards and the other things u mentioned about the background behind this character (your second place on the cgtalk entry) ect ect .. is just imho brilliant :applause: i absolutely love the idea behind it and wish someone would set up some finance for you to make a series out of it kinda like starship troopers but far far more original and exciting (I love fantacy stuff)

i wont wish u luck u dont need it .

07-26-2003, 12:18 PM

great design I love the mount of detail and I like how his mask changes his character completely. Like he has two faces. Very cool.
Will he be in a film?

08-02-2003, 06:29 AM
Hey this charactor is so cool. I'm surprised you don't have a job in the business already. I'll tell you one thing though, I'm glad to see a fellow Canadian artist do something his country can be proud off.

08-02-2003, 11:22 AM
Very very cool - quite literally! (Feel free to lose all/any respect for me for that)

I present you with 5 shiny stars and 4 round yellow grinning faces

:D :D :D :D

07-29-2004, 09:11 AM
This is noe of the mst original and striking characters here in my opinion.

I'm not sure why, but I don't like the legs. maybe thay're too puffy.

08-03-2004, 03:51 AM
Hello fetus23I just love your work, it's very inspiring. I got introduced to your work by Dean, the drummer of Summerlad from Calgary.....Does it ring a bell?

08-04-2004, 11:09 AM
