Starting this WIP thread for the monthly animation mini-challenge so I can keep all my updates in one place. So far I have my planning pretty much complete and the scene ready to rock! Should have the blocking knocked out here in a bit so stay tuned! Crits/Comments always welcome.
--TODO LIST-- *updated 5/10*
1) Finish all of the inbetweens for frames 140-Final
2) Fix the second bounce of the balls (happening too fast right now)
3) Track the arcs of all the main body parts before I start splining!

Here's my Maya Workflow Layout for anyone interested. Have my reference 2d thumbs in a torn off camera view image plane and I use shotView mel script for my scene camera so I easily playblast my scene and adjust poses to the camera. Although, I typically put my shotView window on my other monitor with Firefox to make space.

So, as I finished up the blocking of the kick, I realized I really didn't like it. It didn't have any character and followed my reference too closely. So I decided to redo it all and really push all the poses as far as I can into the cartoony. Re-designing each keypose, but matching the same overall timing and motion is turning out to be incredibly fun! Should have a playblast up soon.
Here's a small taste :D

Still working on the re-blocking, here's a playblast I uploaded to vimeo a couple hours ago. Working on the kick right now as the ball falls back down. Any feedback on the poses would be awesome! Thkx

Updated original thread with Milestones. Blocking is pretty much done as I have all the golden poses somewhat there. Still missing the anticipation for the big jump. Will add that with my next pass and Blocking +! Comments welcome! :D

Thanks Jon! Working on the blocking plus right now, which basically means adding a lot of breakdowns and cleaning up the timing/spacing. I think he needs to do a little antic in the beginning of the shot as well, maybe tap his fingers on the ball before he bounces it. Guess I'll have to mess around with it :p

Thanks for the encouragement arijitg! Still working on all the breakdowns before I tackle splining. Figured out the antic for the first third of the animation. Here's the first of the Blocking Plus for the first 90 frames.

Bit over halfway through my blocking PLUS. Next update should be the final version before I jump into splining. Any comments/crits would be welcome :)

Well the blocking PLUS is done pretty much. I still need to go over all the arcs, do a pass on the hands and head before splining, but the timing and poses are feeling pretty good methinks. I also rendered it out for a quicking lighting test to see how it looked.
Any comments/crits welcome!

Nice shot wip, I liked it!
I like when he prepares the ball like tennis player.
I just suggest you do a more relaxed pose at the end after the kick. The way it is , seems he still tense, ready to something happens like he participate on a duel at Once Upon a Time in the West.
And maybe itīll be more believable if the kick to the right side, because he seems to look at/aim the goal at the right side since the begining.

Solid idea. The anticipation is wonderful when he is looking at the ball before the bounce.
The only things I would suggest is when he is getting ready to throw the ball up, maybe squash him down a little bit more before he throws. It might help solidify the force he is exerting in the throw. The same with the jump, just slightly squash him and I think you wil really feel the lift. The kick looks great and I really like the ending. I am looking forward to seeing your next post.

Some nice tips to go along with a really nice blocking! Dude your animation workflow has definitely inspired me. Just by watching you I've come to conclusion that it's all about taking a step at a time. Not get overwhelmed with the full picture... because in the end it all comes together when planned properly!! :D
I'm way stoked...
...I just got Maya FINALLY. Switching from blender to Maya wasn't too difficult considering Maya's animation system is the foundation of blenders animation system haha... I'll definitely be in on the next animation challenge coming up... by then I'll have Maya down pretty well!!
