View Full Version : Short Film - Girasol

03-29-2009, 04:12 PM

Started this film about 2 Months ago although we have been working on the story and concept for alot longer. Its a 2 man project, and I'm the sole animator of the main character (I also designed modellled and rigged him). My partner is doing the lighting modelling and rendering.

I think its best to give a brief outline of the story.... and I will keep it REALLY brief.
The film is set in a future where global warming and smog have blackened the skies, and the only light that shines is from electrical sources, a reclusive young scientist works on a sunscope which will be able to harvest sunlight and concentrate it into a pure liquid form.

heres a link to a little teaser trailer type thing (really its only shading lighting and rendering tests) - done by my partner

Teaser: (

Wow, that trailer was very good! I am thoroughly impresses so far. I hope to see the final product soon. Sounds very intriguing! If the final film is as good as the trailer, man...

Thanks for the comments guys. glad u like the little teaser, its not really a trailer just some render tests to give a rough idea of the art direction for the final film.

I'm just working on the next set of shot so will be uploading soon...

Have you got a projected schedule? Any idea when it will be released?

Hi, I am Daryl, the other member of this team, thanks for your interest, hopefully the release date for this will be the 13th May according to our production schedule, but we may take a couple of weeks to polish it up a little

Here's a update of the character with lights and shaders as it stands, the SSS needs a little tweaking as well as the colours.

An update of shot 6 and a first pass composite, gotta do the transparency on the water bath yet.

hey deethree

Sweet comp!! The eyebrows stick out to me though, is the white outline a transparency thing, or bump issue? Looks great otherwise:applause:

04-03-2009, 01:21 AM
ahhh well spotted thanks for the feedback.

the weird fringing around the eyebrow was caused by a bump map issue where it was conflicting with our zbrush normal map. All sorted now so better renders will soon follow.

lol no one noticed that the characters hair wasnt subdivided in the last render ;)
all sorted now :)

I'm very impressed with the cloth textures.

Also, you say two guys are working on this entire thing? Hot damn. Surely you both have degrees in the field, right? Otherwise, jeeze.

Thanks a lot, we are still studying at the University of Hertfordshire and this is our project together.

Only 9 days left the the deadline, a lot of work to do.

05-05-2009, 04:57 PM
Man, if this is going to be anything like I'm imagining, it might be my favorite amateur short film, in any medium.

05-11-2009, 05:50 PM
The time has finally come around, and the deadline for the film is but a day away....
the link to the full and final film will be released within a few days once we're clear on some of the film festival rules...

Hi, thanks for your complement. The film really started off by considering a future world where pollution has become so bad that sunlight is no longer visible. It was a simple concept but it offered a plethora of possible pathways for story development.

The film illustrates how we take advantage of the natural things in the world happening as they should (sun being there in the morning etc), and the enormity of the power that nature has over us without even trying.

I think we'd all appreciate sunlight if we hadnt seen it for a generation or two, and I'm sure we'd also do anything short of climbing a pipe into the sky to get some :)
