View Full Version : HD Resolution?

I'm a little confused. I'm making a simple animation for a client. He needs a spinning earth. He wants the resolution to be 1440 X 1080, and still be 16:9. I'm working with Blender, and in the Render settings there is an HD preset at 1920 X 1080. This actually looks 16:9. It is a rectangle like it should be. He wants it 1440 X 1080 and still be rectangle. I don't see how this is possible without stretching pixels horizontally.

How would I make it 1440 X 1080 whilst still being 16:9?

1920*1080 would be HD using square pixels. 1440*1080 would be HD using non-square pixels(not sure about the exact ratio, something around 1,42).

No Blender user, so I don't know if there is a render output preset for that. If not, render in square pixels and convert in PS or AE(or similiar) into the desired pixel aspect ratio.

I don't know why everything can't just be square. It would make things much easier! I guess I'll have to try a few things.

Don't go with 1920x1080! Give your client what he needs or you are looking for trouble!

Your client is probably shooting in DVCPRO HD 1080i50 (which is interlaced and yes, it sucks!) so if you are doing something that your client need to add on to it - or worse, composite over! - you better give him a result in the right format.

As for the aspect ratio, I think it's 1.3333 (make sure of this in a HD forum and check the aspect ratio for the DVCPro format)

If you want to work square and still give your client the desired 1440x1080 resolution, you could just scale youīre final image sequenz from 1920x1080 to 1440x1080. Thats absolutely legal.

DHVPro, HDV and HDCam in fact all use the 1440x1080 format with a pixel aspect ration of 1.33, which than gives the image its 16:9 aspect ratio. (1440x1.333333... = 1920, so easy )
But HDCam and HDV (not allways but most of the time) is scaled up to 1920x1080 in camera or by the the recorder/player, when being transfered to the computer.

How would I do that? I tried rendering them out at 1440 X 1080 with the x pixels being at 1.33. Which results in a squished earth. I'm using After Effects for composting. How would I set it up so it takes in the 1440 x 1080 images but stretches them out to being 16:9?

I clicked the preset HDV 1080 29.97. it is set to 1440 x 1080 and the pixel aspect ration is set to [HDV 1080/DVCPRO HD 720 (1.33) ] then on the side it says Frame Aspect Ration: 16:9

I would think this would work, but my composition is still not rectangular. Maybe I'm not doing it right.

There is a little button, to switch on the non-square pixel display in after fx.
Itīs located below the viewport, one the right. A rectangle with a double arrow.

That does not scale the image, but now it should be displayed correctly. Same sharp lines or borders may look bad, but thats normal. donīt worry about it, as long as they look clean, when you switch of the pixel aspect ratio for the viewport.

And make sure that the footage is adjusted properly, too, with the right pixel aspect ratio.
