texture update...

low poly...render test

Demon Prince_ HAURES. Grand prince of hell.

I have decided to go with the Demon Prince character (fire, lava). I have been doing sketches since sunday and this is the direction I am going in.
As far as the concept goes, I will use it as a general guide to go by, but some stuff might change sligthy in 3d, I am hoping it translates well from concept to render mesh. Also the colors are a first general pass, they will change to better suit the 3d model.
When I get some updates I will upload them.
This my first DW (I did the mini challenge as well) and what I have seen so far in this forum and the other ones is impresive to say the least. There is a lot of talent and it is cool to be part of the whole competition. Good luck to everyone.

Sweet concept dude, looking forward to those updates!

03 March 2009, 06:46 AM
Very nice, its exciting to see so many awesome ideas like this, I just can't wait to see this in 3D :buttrock:

03 March 2009, 07:50 AM
Hey Francisco,

Really cool concept and design :) Like a lot his left arm, really cool touch on your concept! Looking forward for more updates! Cheers!

03 March 2009, 07:52 AM
nice concept! I'll follow this one:applause:

03 March 2009, 02:37 PM
pr0wler - thanks! I will try and update saturday and sunday as well. I will try and post some more updates.. maybe some of the drawings i did during the week.

Ferx - Thanks man, I was trying to go for organic shapes and hard edges... I want some of his skin to be like old stone.... and the "worm arm" to be leathery and more glossy. I like your DW direction.. stylized concepts are cool and fun to do.

Xidon - THanks dude.. I hope the 2d translates well into 3d... Nice work on the alien playing pool pic in your portfolio.. crazy details..wicked lighting too

GregStrangis - thanks, nice direction with your DW entry. You are doing a demon prince as well !... I like the head drawings you have.. some cool looking stuff.. I like the multiple eyes and the skin treatment.

03 March 2009, 12:25 AM
Here are some of the sketches I have of the specific parts of the body..... just to serve as a rough guide... just looking for the big shapes... the details will come later in the model and texturing....
I will post some more during the weekend.

03 March 2009, 12:34 AM
nice concept , keep it up

03 March 2009, 03:10 PM
Did a quick and dirty zb mesh to get a feel for the proportions and see how everything is going to work. I will continue to tweak this guy for while.. next step bring it into max and create clean base mesh with a good siluete and poly distribution to start the real detailed sculpt.
By franciscoalvarez ( at 2009-03-21

03 March 2009, 04:01 PM
Looks great for a start, do you like building new topo in max over Zbrush?? Excited to see some details on the new mesh =). Btw thanks for the compliment on my guy, I decided to do a demon Lord and rework my entire concept, but I am sticking with the head that I originally drew with multiple eyes and such

03 March 2009, 06:40 PM
GregStrangis - Hey dude thanks... good luck with your character.. like i said before I like the multiple eye idea for the head!... as far as workflow goes.. I like using zbrush retopology but for the contest because we are under a time limit I rather go with max. I feel I am a bit faster with max when I comes to generating clean simple geo. Also I have planned out how I am going to split him up in several pieces so I can bring those into zbrush and get them to a high enough subdiv to get all the details in..... hopefully it all comes together in the end !!...

I did the legs.... and added the belts and the shoulder bone spike... All just for placement and again to preview the whole look of the guy.

03 March 2009, 05:34 AM
crazy idea, I'm enjoying the process, gonna keep an eye out on this!!

keep it up... i want more!!

03 March 2009, 05:57 AM
the concept sketch is awesome.. the quick zbrush doodle is also coming along.. great!
In the concept art i can see some kind of teeth on the torso.. seems like a good idea, are those really teeth? didn't see the indication of it in the 3d doodle though.. eager to see the progress

03 March 2009, 02:48 PM
PeterBraeley - thanks man, I will try and update today... just doing some basemesh work in max for now.

namnocilis - thanks a lot, yeah those are teeth in his belly, i left opening there in zbrush sketch to later add it on in the full detail pass. Rigth now i am just laying down a clean base mesh to work with... good luck with your dw4 entry!

03 March 2009, 03:16 PM

I like the concept and your so-called "basemesh" is just stunning! Can't wait to see more details on it. I especially love the "roughness" of your sketches, would be pretty cool if you could transfer this onto the model. Keep on going.

so long

03 March 2009, 06:47 PM
Cool concept. I like the creature's shape and the proportions.... good start!

03 March 2009, 07:01 PM
Looking so nice! Can't wait to see more

03 March 2009, 11:51 PM
DarkBlueArt - thanks a lot... I hope that the general idea and look of my sketches translates to the 3d model.... it is always tough to balance out what works on 2d and 3d...but hopefully I will find a good blend between both.. good luck in your DW4 entry as well !

Maxter - thanks man... looking forward to your DW4 entry.. good luck !

Hexahedron - thanks man.. i will try to keep updating.. cool looking DW4 entry as well.. keep it up.

It is cool to see a lot talented artist working hard on their characters.....

Quick update on the clean mesh for zbrushing...
By franciscoalvarez ( at 2009-03-22

03 March 2009, 01:08 AM
Good start to the clean mesh, what is your tri count right now?

03 March 2009, 02:56 AM
Very cool work, and you are so fast!(not like me....|||)
Ha ha! Good luck, man!

03 March 2009, 08:25 PM
Fantastic looking character Francisco. I like that it is one of the more original and interesting characters on the forum right now. Amazing that you have the talent and speed with Zbrush to "sketch and doodle" within the program. What program do you start your "Clean Model" in?

03 March 2009, 03:04 AM
tsalvageboy - THanks a lot for the very nice comment man, I am glad you like the character, I did try to go with something original, but it is hard to make something totally unique, I usually use 3dsmax for building quick base meshes.

Yin-Shiuan - hey man thanks..I am trying to keep on schedule to be able to finish the character, hopefully it will work out.

GregStrangis - hey man.. right now is pretty high, but for the base mesh I am just looking for siluohette and even quads on the mesh, just so I can go and zbrush the detail nicely without any pinching. This base mesh will help me later on build a optimized low poly thats within the 10.000 tri limit.

thanks guys... good luck to everyone on their entry...

03 March 2009, 03:32 AM
max base mesh done. I will be starting the zbrush sculpt soon. In the mean time here a some warm up sketches to loosen up....

03 March 2009, 03:38 AM
Man your skills are impressive. I'm taking too long thinking up ideas and heres you just playing around with digital sketches to warm up. Ha I love it, very inspiring. And awesome to se hidden details start to emerge. :applause:

03 March 2009, 03:46 AM
I'm really digging this guy. Although the human-like hand is looking kind of left behind compared to the rest of the figure at this point.

03 March 2009, 08:52 AM
Hey Francisco,

Awesome models man!! Totally love the asymmetrical design on your character, great!! Amazing work!! Cheers!!

03 March 2009, 03:55 PM
Ferx - hey man, thanks i was actually trying to push assymetry as much as I could.. cool that you noticed..the only issue is uvw space, i will have to plan that out for assymetry to work.

capncookie - thanks for the comment, yeah I did not sketch out the hand but in the final sculpt his hand will be more like the drawing.. they will be like rocky claws if that makes sense.

Xidon - Thanks for the awesome comment man!...I would like to have more time too, to "cook ideas" for a longer time and draw out and plan the concept more but the thing is time, I want to have enough time for all the texturing, low poly modeling and presentation stuff at the end. Thanks again for the comments man, and like I said before your work on the alien vs predator stuff is top notch, congrats.

03 March 2009, 04:12 PM
and the idea to make his body resemble a face. Though I bet, he has got some serious problems in scratching his head ;)
Cool stuff!

03 March 2009, 03:16 AM
DeadInTheAttic - his body is going to be different from his head.. same skin treatment but diferent look if that makes sense...thanks for the comment.

more zbrush stuff... still more changes to come to the body..the mouth, the armor and the stone spike are more or less going to look like that, they will change a bit.....

03 March 2009, 04:29 AM
some more zbrush stuff and a quick color test..

03 March 2009, 06:34 AM
Hey Francisco! That color test really pops him already! What happened to the mouth on his stomach? Anatomy is looking pretty good, careful tho, his biceps might be a little short. This guy is going to look sick when he is done!

03 March 2009, 11:25 AM
Its coming along well. Nice sculpting. I too miss the mouth on his belt, it was a nice touch.
What worries me though is that he's looking quite stiff. Maybe you can fix that when you pose him though. Just try to be aware of that. Can't wait to se an update.

03 March 2009, 09:59 PM
Great modeling here :) The asymmetry really fits the character.

03 March 2009, 04:50 PM
MartinNielsen-thanks man, i am trying to push assymetry but I have to start thinking about uvw space... i want to take advantage of that too..

NiklasElling- thanks a lot man, the mouth in the belly is coming! i left the empty space there for that...also he has some kind of bone armor plates in his pelvis area.. those are coming too.. and the stiffness i hope to get rid of some of that when i pose him at the end... I find it easier to model him in a relaxed pose and then push him in the a cool pose at the end..

GregStrangis-thanks for pointing out the bicep size Greg.. I will address that for sure, also like i said the mouth is coming i just have to think about the look of the mouth to sculpt it in. Thanks for the comment man.. and also good luck with your character.. i would stick with the worm looking guy I think if you finish him all the way he can look pretty awesome.

good luck to everyone...thanks for the comments.

03 March 2009, 03:23 AM
the skirt and the belts..also the armor piece.... still missing the mouth in the stomach and other elements but i am trying to get all the pieces in for a least 1 pass of zbrush and then I will go into a detailing pass...

03 March 2009, 06:16 AM
Hey Francisco,

That model looks simply awesome!! :D Waiting for more updates!! Cheers!!

03 March 2009, 06:53 AM
damn you and your awesome zbrushing!

04 April 2009, 03:30 PM
Ferx - thanks a lot, I will try and update soon I have not had a chance to sit and work on him for a bit, but i will soon. I need to start wrapping up the zbrushing at the end of next week. Keep up the good work in your entry too...

jett12 - thanks a lot man, I like zbrush, it is really open to exploring different designs and is just a very nice tool to do 3d stuff in. I like the traditional max and maya too but I think when you add zbrush you get that lively painterly and sculpted feeling into the 3d. Good luck with your entry..

04 April 2009, 05:48 PM
Very nice character, i like the idea. I prefer the right side of it, especially for the armor.
Keep it up :)

04 April 2009, 03:11 AM
Eredhel - thanks man.. here is some more of the armor.. good luck with your entry as well.

only the leg and hand to go.. then i will start detailing, hopefully I can work it out in time.

04 April 2009, 03:17 AM
Wow i've said it once, and dam man you deserve it again, WOW. Very nice. Loving the muscle detail especially on his back

04 April 2009, 06:27 PM
Xidon - thanks a lot dude, I added some extra stuff to the design, a belt strap that goes around his back and connects to the shoulder pad. Just to help tie up the design a bit more. Thanks again for the Xidon... waiting to see updates on your entry!
Here is some of those extra details.. and a quick color test...

04 April 2009, 06:45 PM
The detail on the last update is coming along nicely! Anatomy looks a little blocky right now but I am sure you are going to smooth and clean things up. Keep going

04 April 2009, 02:50 PM
GregStrangis - thanks dude, yeah I cleaned him a bit, but I am pretty much done with the sculpt, I have to start moving on to the low poly and texturing. I want to put some work into those, as well as the presentation (pedestal and beauty render).. the time is running out, I want to be able to finish him properly.... hopefully it will work out in the end...good luck with yours as well

04 April 2009, 05:50 PM
NICE! i like it a lot! cool anatomy :), the leg feels quite a bit too short but tht's pretty much it very nice WIP.
reminds me of a Cylon Demon ehe

04 April 2009, 02:33 PM
StefanoDubay - Hey Stefano, thanks a lot man, i tried to make the anatomy work, its always important to nail that down. Know i am working out the low poly so its evenly built and not looking polygonal, looking for nice round surfaces and the texture and shader work. I also have to pose him but that will come later on. I like your entry too, I looks very detailed and the anatomy work is great too...looking forward to see more of that guy !... Also I noticed you work for PSYOP? ... if so congratulations on the awesome work on that FED EX commercial..really awesome work there...

04 April 2009, 08:25 PM
eheheh thanks bu I didnt worked on tht one :)
BTW i just posted a turntable on my thread, I'll throw more soon, it makes much more sense in 3D

04 April 2009, 11:15 PM
StefanoDubay - sorry about that man.. I checked out your turntable, the progress on your character is coming along really nice! crazy details and nice sculpting...good luck man

Finished the low poly ( a bit under 10k), also unwrapped it but i have to arrange them on the 2048 sheet. Did a quick normal test on the belt buckle on the front.. still not the final normal just a test to see how the detail holds up.
Also did some polypainting to test out color schemes for this guy... I have an idea of where to go with him color wise but still figuring stuff out as I go...time is running out!
Good luck to everyone on their entries..

04 April 2009, 05:03 AM
Man you are so far ahead of me  Ha ha i will be struggling to be getting this all finished but will definitely try. I like all of these colour schemes. So hard to pick a winner. Im thinking either the left or middle one as their colours are more CGS colour scheme. And i like how on the end two you have the shoulder spike thing a darker colour, this works real well.

04 April 2009, 02:54 PM
Xidon - Hey man thanks a lot.. good job on your entry too.. i saw the progres and it is coming along, still have a few weeks to finish him up man!. As far as color goes i was thinking the same thing either left or middle one, i still have to work on the color of the other elements to make sure they work well together as one... thanks for the input man.

04 April 2009, 12:41 AM
Your torso colour tests are looking excellent! cant wait to see the full body in that supreme quality

Are those colour tone images colour corrected in photoshop? or are they straight renders?

04 April 2009, 03:55 AM
Darkra - hey man thanks a lot... as far as those color renders go.. they where screen captures from zbrush with some polypainting on them... I did do some small paint over in helps me preview his final colors scheme...

burned the normals... and tested out some renders in maya with the low poly mesh... now i will start texturing as well as cleaning up the normals.. (this is a closeup.. the final renders will be full body so i think he can hold up with the texture res )

04 April 2009, 04:13 AM
Looking wicked dude! As far as your color tests went I am a fan of 1 and 3, Low poly looks great as well, keep it up!

04 April 2009, 04:32 AM
Sweet normal test with on you low poly. The only area that really stands out to me that needs fixing (which you've probably already noticed) is the burnt/decaying part around the mouth on his stomach. That area seems like it is too detailed for the texture res. Maybe try having less of this on the normal map but have these details on a bump map. Anyway it's just a thought. but as always, very nice progress.

04 April 2009, 12:51 PM
nice normal map render ! I hope mine will give something good too! :banghead: For the colors scheme I will vote for the option A . I think its the best balanced and have good tone too.

Good luck!

04 April 2009, 10:52 PM
Hmmmmm very good!.. I really like your color tests and hi rez model snapshots the renders are top notch I hope I can match this as well mine is a demon prince to . your quality is very high good job. Your right time is running out. time for the final dash. I like your weapons and body armer nice stuff .. the mouth arm is pretty creepy not sure if you will gain or loose points on that one. lets hope you gain.

04 April 2009, 03:31 PM
greg - hey man thanks.. i think i will go with color scheme A... good luck with your character too

Xidon-thanks a lot man. For sure I see what you mean about the mouth in stomach. I will clean that up in the diffuse and normal pass.

inmaya-thanks a lot, I think after all the comments option A for color scheme is probably the one i am going with. As far as the normals go it might help if you add a cavity map and Ao map to reinforce stuff.

QuantumPixel - thanks a lot, I hope the mouth arm works out in my favour...I was going for creepy!

I will try and post an update soon, working on the textures now, I think they need a lot of work so I might wait until they are looking a little bit better.
good luck to everyone!

04 April 2009, 04:31 PM
texture and render update.
Got some of the textures worked out.. still working on them.. spec is just a very rough pass. Got the sss shader up and running in maya as well (still tweaking it).. and also got a rock pedestal worked out ( in this pic you cant see to much of it but i will show it more later on). Still pretty much tweaking and fine tunning everything to get it to look proper. A few days left!!!

05 May 2009, 03:44 AM
Nice one, your model and texture came out very well. How will you be posing him?... or is this the pose.

Also have you got the cgs logo in there somewhere? best not forget that :D

05 May 2009, 05:11 PM
Untamed - hey man.. thanks for the nice comments.. those textures there are not the final ones.. same for the pose.
the logo if you look its in the skirt, its also in the back as well. But in the new texture its a bit more obvious.
I have been working on stuff but have not been able to post something. textures are done, Just taking time to set up the final images, fx's, pedestal, and renders, as well as a decent pose (nothing too extreme)
I will upload some stuff soon.

05 May 2009, 06:34 PM
Finally all done. Thanks to everyone for taking a look at my character and giving me advice on how to make him better. I learned a lot from building him and also just from everyone else's entries, there is a ton of great work from artists in this competition, congrats to everyone.
Here are my final images.

05 May 2009, 10:29 PM
Excellent final :) Congrats and good luck :)

05 May 2009, 02:19 PM
thanks a lot man, I had a lof fun creating him, I learned a lot as well. THis is the first dominance war I have joined or the first online contest for that matter, and It was a great experience.

05 May 2009, 05:17 PM
beautiful francisco! very powerful character, i still love the cylon like helmet!
I wish there would haave been some more bevel paint on the booths to make those shape more evident! just a fine tweak, awesome work anyway, best of luck!

05 May 2009, 08:39 PM
awesome demonic beauty shot..luv this guys face

05 May 2009, 11:20 PM
Great job Francisco! I really like your concepts. Good luck in the voting! :)

05 May 2009, 11:26 PM

05 May 2009, 02:13 AM
Beautiful beauty render!...this character looks dangerous...the true essence of nightmares...great job in capturing this!...something about the nose and mouth area sent a chill down my spine when I saw it in the construction and beauty renders...

A very strong entry imho!!...Good job man!!...and good luck...

05 May 2009, 01:57 PM
Outstanding work, and a very strong finish! Such a brutal looking character. I love it! The modeling, texturing, and rendering are all top notch. Congrats man!

05 May 2009, 02:38 PM
StefanoDubay- hey Stefano, thanks a lot man, I know what you mean by the bevel paint on the boots, there is a bit in there but I guess I could have push it more to make it easier to read... but thanks a lot for all the comments man. Good luck with your character as well it turned out great.

farazmobin - Thanks a lot man, I tried to put some effort into the beauty shot, nice to see that you noticed.... although after seeing yours I was wondering about using that crytek engine for another project in the future, good luck with your character too man.

Synectikos - thanks a lot, good luck to you as well, congratulations on finishing your evil looking character !

Ferx - Thanks a lot ferx! I tried to have those big arms and I was looking for assymetry.. one worm arm and a armored arm just to have some variety in the character... I am glad you like the beauty shot too..gracias por el comentario! suerte!

johnwoo - wow man thanks for the awesome comment, glad you like him. I tried to make him evil looking, and I did think about the look of his face i did not want him to be generic but have a bit of personality in there... thanks a lot man, Congrats on your entry as well, it turned out awesome.

Bri_Spencer -thanks a lot for the comment man, I tried to put a bit of effort into the aspects that you mentioned, good luck with your entry too, i think it turned out great
