View Full Version : envoirment: stills for design'ed
07 July 2003, 08:22 AM
Hi, I'm making some 3d scenes for navigating my website.
The first that I will make is this building for the home/main page.
tell me what you think about it. It's still a WIP :D
07 July 2003, 10:27 AM
It's a bit cartoony. If that is what you are going for, then it is great - if not, you should consider complicating your shaders a bit.
The planks on the roof - great unordered look there, but they look a bit too uniform. Maybe twist and warp some of them to increase the messyness even further.
And for the final render, don't forget to increase the hemi-res for that GI.
I like the overall style!

Here is some more information,
This house is for the design'ed site and the whole site will be in cartoon style...I will add some more details and I'm still not satisfied about the lightning...I'm now making a great bilboard near the house with my compagny name on it. After that I'm going to map the hole thing and make the rest of the envoirment, does anyone have some good suggestion of making grass and trees.

and a little update

OK! Love those extra bricks scattered over the walls, and the chimney really adds to the general house-feeling.
Just noticed the doghouse too. Really neat. The lighting is a lot better in the second picture, no doubt. I would still warp those planks on the roof a bit. And maybe dirty up that barrel, maybe make it darker around the base, like some waterdamage.
The color of that bell and doorhandle is a little too bright in my opinion.
Very good update.

The one crit that I have is that the roof gives the impression that this is an older, not very well maintaned house, but the rest of the house does not reflect this. I would like to see the door a little tattered, maybe a window cracked or boarded, a little dirt on the house, maybe even a broken down old car in lawn, broken downspout or leaking water from the barrel. And that chimney could use a little soot, how is somebody keeping it so clean when they can't even walk on the roof without falling through.
All in all, a great little image.

and a little update
The place will get some dirt...I will map it soon. Maybe I will smash some windows and trow some garbage outside...
the software that I use is 3dmax 5 with the scanline render
07 July 2003, 10:39 AM
the way you did the grass reminds me of boring3d.com
nice stuff. though as you said before you need to work on the lighting a bit, it still looks too newbie-brazil-skylight'ish
07 July 2003, 12:28 PM
and a little update
the billboard has got an other place, and I worked some more on the lightning

and a little update
07 July 2003, 04:00 PM
just keeps getting better and better! i really like the new sky... maybe add some more color varation to the ground?
07 July 2003, 07:12 PM
really neat'o project :o)
althought it's a comic style, I'd fixe those windows because right now they can't close :)
The bilboard being behind the house I think it should be higher for better viewing... maybe needs some relocating.
keep it up!
07 July 2003, 07:40 PM
Ahm, I don't like the sky. It looks flat. The clouds thould get smaller near the horizon. Or you could put some blueish mountains there.
Anyway, great work. :applause:

A little update...I started with new grass
07 July 2003, 03:44 PM
and a little update

07 July 2003, 09:31 PM
Now that's a nice sky.
07 July 2003, 09:57 PM
Very good looking sky - BUT, now you get a problem with the shadows on the house instead. The sky image suggests that the sun is setting (or maybe rising) somewhere behind the house, from the camera POV, but the shadows say differently...
Very good updates recently, btw
07 July 2003, 12:25 AM
Fix the shadows, as JamesMK mentioned, and it will look great!
nice textures, and a good moode in the scene. ¨
Awsome sky.
I think the light bulbs around the "Design'ed" sign looks a bit wierd. I would just leave them out, and make the board a bit cracked up :lightbulb

I really like this newest version, it has a very plain but comfortable feel to it. I actually prefered the previous one, it seems like you have too much realism going into a comical picture, but reguardless it looks great. Love those windows.
07 July 2003, 08:07 AM
The side walk behind the grass if giving me a problem. It might be to white considering the value of the house and the billbourd. I love the style and i think you have a good thing going. I would also make the billbourd a little bigger. Great work and i love the constant updates!!!
07 July 2003, 08:16 AM
i think that the only thing letting this picture down is the grass.
it looks a little too uniform and plastic.
it could do with being a little more random, just my opinion.
other then that i think it looks well cool.
maybe you could put a sleeping dog in the kennel?
07 July 2003, 05:10 PM
I will work on the lightning, before I render the final render, I will also make a sleeping dodo for in the doghouse
07 July 2003, 04:58 PM
I love the style, and the colors are cool, but man do i hate that roof. It just looks like you didn't want to put any time into it. Please use something other then the box tool all the time. The house has charecter but the roof doesn't. It looks like someone just dumped a bunch of realy borring looking wood on top of the house and didn't bother to nail it down.
It looks like you made the barrel the same way you made the roof, as if you have little strait blocks and the ringds are covering where they meet. Doesn't look like it would hold water
The origianl grass looked better
PLEASE include the WIRE if you want real C&C.
07 July 2003, 07:44 PM
Where is the wire?
I'll delete this thread if you dont post it soon. Please read the rules before starting a thread.

Sorry I totally forgot it....:surprised
here is a wire

love what you've done here. it's stylized and just great. only thing i have to add is to ask why the billboard is pointed at the house. it'd make more sense if it were pointed down the path leading up to the house so that visitors could see it. i'd actually prefer to see it as a sign posted by the driveway rather than a billboard. kinda like a real estate "for sale" sign but with your own image.
07 July 2003, 10:41 AM
That its getting better and better...
Couple of suggestions...
As others said, the grass its for me something to be fixed, i believe that just changing slightly the color it will do good...let me explain ; on the left side of the pic, and on the far hill, grass looks cool, but especially on the down-right corner of the pic the color its too similar, and the kind of green its little off, i see that you´re going for mix between realism and cartoon, but i will consider that the natural things on the pic, like sky and grass, will look cooler if more realistic, sky its fine to me now...so, just try it, change the color of the grass, a mean that saturated green, shift it slightly to yellow...some variations of green will raise the realism level too...
up to you...
07 July 2003, 11:43 AM
Thanks to all,....I will work on the grass, The billboard will stay a bilboard that is just my design.
koroko: Thanks the crits on the grass I can use those to make a better picture.
07 July 2003, 11:56 AM
I really like the style of the House.
There are 2 things thou:
1. The Top of the roof where the planks overlap looks wrong. A normal roof would ahve some extra construction on the top there (I dont know the english word for it).
2. The Dog-house should have a different material than the house. You woudnt build a dog house from the same material than the big house.
07 July 2003, 09:00 PM
Hello guys, I have started the model of the dodo, the dodo is one of the characters of my site...(more characters to come), I want to place the dodo by the dog house, in this scene C&C please.
The scene is still a WIP but I wanted to take a little break from it.

I really like where your concept is going, you just make it better and better. very nice everything so far. Keep it up.
I think you could nail the image with a good coloured sky, making the image richer "hue" wise with some distant small scale cartoony clouds. The dog house looks abadoned as there isn't a path to get there, and your house is not receiving mail at the moment?, maybe some trees in the distant hills will give your image more depth as well. Also if anyone is living in that house they will need to do some laundry and dry the stuff outside...
Maybe what I am trying to say is that you need more life in the image, at the moment is a collection of nice objects, the grass is the only element giving some natural element to it.
But then again, I could be wrong.
07 July 2003, 11:43 PM
OH yea! ya getting better and better.. very creative work.. Why don't u add a tree or two? Hmm.. love to see a tree there..
07 July 2003, 08:14 AM
and a update...
08 August 2003, 12:00 PM
LOL! I really love that style! Your models and lightning are awsome - :buttrock:
Give us some more!
