Hey guys,

I'm doing a little R&D into making a good sun, close up/space shot ... well with the sun in full frame ..

Any recommendations?

Hey Dave,

Only in AE? If you have 3dsMax available to you (I seem to remember you do, or did), you should definitely check out Pete Draper's books, Deconstructing the Elements.

Here's sample images of what's in the 2 different editions

And here's the sun

His education page has quite a few space related things

It's still an artistic interpretation, though, and in my view not the best one. A lot of the stuff he shows is invisible in the normal light spectrum and only shows up with special magnetoscopes, IR cameras, radiometers and so on.... For a "realistic" sun, one would basically just see it for what it is - a white-ish yellow ball with darker "cool" spots where the magnetic fluctuations are and protuberances breaking out every now and then, following the otherwise invisible magnetic lines. Everything else is just as much interpretation and really depends. A good reference is the movie Sunshine, which does a good job of balancing scientific correctness with an artistic view on things. And no, absolutely no 3D program necessary - it's just a ball, so CC Sphere, Circle and anything that can create spheroid stuff is your friend as is anything that can create jagged edges, strings and random patterns - Polar Coordinates, Roughen Edges, Trapcode Form. See my website for a slightly cheesy example.

I think Andrew Kramer made a sun.. check - the tutorials section.

If not that site then should have it.

that is I mean to say - a SUN in AfterEffects.

Like Milenium sez - its subjective. But if you are going for the "Gaseous Giant" look - I would use the deconscructing the elements book or a process very similar to that. Just google it and you should be able to find a plethora of materials/tutorials.
