Hello there !

I'm very excited to enter this excellent challenge. I will create a death/darkness Demon Lord called Smrttogoth. Strange name indeed, it's a silly trick with the world 'death' in croatian, 'god' in german and a demonistic suffix.
I noticed that quite a lot of demonic creatures had 3 heads: Cerberus, Asmodeus, Balam... After few thoughts i decided to create a winged creature with 3 birds heads: a vulture and an crow head, but with 3 orbits for 2 skulls, like a malformation. This represents death, necrophagia, punishment of the dead ones, humiliation...
The other - and for now biggest one - is an eagle head wich represent the inevitable authority of death, majesty, the power and the accuracy of the bird of prey.
After a few messy sketches and the listening of obscure death, black and doom metal, i got this first interesting rough sketch.

I will see how i'll find this after a sleep. Moreover, i have to add some clothes, armor, etc to show that it's an intelligent creature.

On a battlefield, Smrttogoth is one of the most deadly Demon Lords. Flying over the enemy, he terrorize his enemies with his grim and unbearably loud shrieks. Some of the foes will panic, running like a scare animal with no place to hide. Some will be petrified by the sight of this giant winged atrocity in the bleak sky. To finish them Smrttogoth can crush his enemies, diving from the sky, shred them with his long claws, or use his most deadly power: the plague shriek. Accumulating a sphere of space/time abberation in front of his beaks, he spread it over 500m with a powerfull wing flap, causing on enemies the damages that 666 years in rot should do.

Messy sketch in zbrush, it helps me to have a good view of the overall shapes and proportions. I'll use this raw sculpt as a base to improve the design and get a clean model sheet.

Heads closeups, have to melt the crow and the vulture head in front view.

I was very dissatified by the second black and white body sketch, i changed proportions, some body parts... More soon.

Nice start, I like the heads you make, maybe you can differentiate the heads, one cleaver, one more violent ... Not the 3 same.
And put stuctures into the wing.
need to see more ! =)

Thanks Neobear. ^^ I tried this on the previous sketches, have the eagle proud and arrogant and the other ones sad and/or hateful, but at the end the character wasn't evil enough. I'll try to do it on the sculpt.

Here is the melted version of the heads. Just did a front view, no perspective because it's kind of hard to me to draw this, i should take to much time.

Here is the new body !

I just saw i forgot do draw the tail on the front view... Doesn't matter. The vulture and crow head are now on a trunk that slides a bit in and out of the body. You might think about a ... It's done on purpose, the corpses are devoured by those two heads. In the symbolic, it enhance the idea of the deads humiliation and desecration, while the eagle head is above, meaning tha he's really have the authority.
The horns are now shaped like diapasons to amplificate the vibration of the screams. It becomes more deafening for living creatures and more sensor-aggressive for machines.
The wings avec been reworked on the advice of Xabi, they're now structured like bat wings.

Clothes and armor will come soon !

New changes !

New body, new heads and finally clothes and armor.
I was quite dissatisfied with the previous version... As my girlfriend made me notice, it wasn't evil enough. It should nearly be a kind of norm creature...
I think things are better now. The design won't be changed from now, i'll head on modeling.

And sorry for bad quality, did this with my camera...

The wings will be the same. Base sculpt will be posted tomorrow i think.

Hey man! Cool start, as i was looking through your images i thought that maybe this was an abomination but i wasnt sure, also the fact that it looks quite like a bird made me wonder if it might be a norm.. But then i read that you were going for a demon lord. I dont know, it doesnt quite strike as a godly foe.. :/ It looks slightly disturbing but i dont see it as frightening or as dangerous as a demon lord. Also maybe you locked yourself in to much to begin with, I'd like to see you experimenting with shapes alot more and not just, "hmm, i might add an arm there". Maybe even forget about the figures and parts you are dealing with for a while and just play with some abstrakt forms, then you can transfer anything cool you might come up with into a more figurative form. Also you maybe should think about pumping up its scare-factor, if its a demon lord make it look superior and intimidating. Just some thoughts.. Good start, really, but i think it be good if you let loose some more with your concept before delving into modelling. Keep it up m8! :)

Thank you for good advices dude. To be honest, i thought that i had leveled up it scare factor on the drawings, but it seems like it's not enough. : /
Maybe i locked myself yes, especially with a flying creature. Because i want it 'credible', i cannot charge the upper body with armor or heavy stuff because of the wings. I also can't do too much asymetry because of the balance while flying.
I saw many people playing with abstract forms but i'm not really used to it... Maybe i'll try.
On the other hand, i sketched without strong expression, without pose, without a great amount of detail... It's not like what a concept designer should do for a 3D modeler, it's more a guide for me to lock the shapes.
I also feel short of time, i planned to start modeling on sunday because i will have a lot of things to sculpt.
My goal was to make something original, but it's hard to make something original And efficient.
I'll think about working the design again. Thanjs for your comment. :)

Hey Abrvpt.. i really love ur concept as well as the sketches.. really looks awesome.. for me it looks like one of God of War creatures.. just love it.. The first head looks good.. a good combination.. wat is the purpose of that extra leg.. does it help in anyway or is it just thr..??? and i think he can be a demon lord.. thr is no particular form of description for a demon lord.. he can look like anything.. a gaint lizard or a gaint bird..Anyway awesome work...

Here is the raw sculpt. As FrozZT suggested, i did some abstract sketches an the design evolved slightly. This sculpt is only to set muscles and shapes, now i will sketch over it for armor pieces, etc.
Once i'll had all my shapes, i'll head on fine details and retopology (and more fine details if needed).

Cool sketches! the concept is amazing! last update is really cool.. its looking much scarier than before..
i felt that the two heads merged concept in your sketch was perfect! may be try that out in 3D might look even more scarier.. and also i felt that there is lot of legs for lowerbody, focus is shifted more towards those legs than towards the upperbody, apart from that everything else is great! Good Going!

Thanks for your suggestions. :) Merged head wasn't bad yeah, but i'm not sure i will use them... I'll see if i have the time to try it, maybe i can do a double crow head or a double vulture head...
Thanks also for you advice on the legs, i didn't noticed but you're right.

Here is a raw paintover of the future parts. It will stay very rough as i have a good view of what its gonna be. Whithout sketching them properly i will save some time for sculpting. As namnocilis said, the lower body i already rich, so i didn't put a lot of detail.

WOAH... nice sculpt.. i like this head concept also.. but the best part is the paintover of the armor.. it looks sweet.. can u post a close up of the torso.. i wanna c how the heads are merged to the body..

Small update. The armor piece on the forearm i the first subtool didn't created from zpheres.

Hi Abrvpt,

Nice progress. But take care of your demon Muscles, I know he is a demon so he shouldn't follow humans rules of morphology, but for some things like armes, shoulders i think it is better to make it more reallistic with real muscles, to make him more terrifying. and play with the hardness of bones and softness of muscles, it could be fine.

I send you a draw based on you mod, with some corrections. ( ithink ^^)

Wow, this is one of a kind! I love those little bird heads; wasn't too sure of the lower part but it is starting to grow in me. :) I don't think it needs any more parts cause its already rich and complex, just a nice pose an a daring angle will make for a great picture ;)

Yes, the bird heads is a nice touch :) The multiple legs look a bit akward to me.

I still need to add some elements, like the kind of spear as on the paintover. If i dont, the right part of the demon will looks 'empty'. And there is a surprise for this spear... ;)

I lost nearly two days on the arm retopology, i finally did something messy but you can't see it. Hope it wont be problematic when baking normals. Here is the detailing of the arm and the wing.

Bloody wing is finally finished ! I got A LOT of problems with it, it's hard to sculpt and retopo on thin parts... I used subtool master to merge the wing skin with the arm. It's not perfect but i have Many other things to sculpt and time is running...

More really soon this time. ;)

wow, it had been hard work to sculpt this i guess. But i think it looks quite cool. Altought... is it meant to be skin... because, at the moment it looks a bit more like something sticky or bubblegum tighten between the bones.
I don't know if it was intended.

The overall model looks very cool and unique.

High poly finiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiished ! I'm over 30 000 000 polygons with all subtools, so i had to split them in 2 files... I had a lot of memory problems, i push my computer to its limits. (to xp 32bits i might say...)
I'm not very happy with the belt, but i'm short on time... I already started the low poly but i'll had to run on the other steps of the character.

Low poly screenshot with very rough diffuse map. Not sure about the colors yet. 9859 triangles for now, a few more with smoke effect on some parts.

Normal and cavity maps are baked, i have to put the clusters together.

Some render test to check if the normals are correct. Need to fix a few areas, but i'll think i'll move on color and spec before, as the deadline is very close.

Creeepy :D! Reminds me of a vulcher, which always invokes images of death, as thats usually where you find them, feasting on corpses :D!

Hahahaha dead flesh, so tasty ! Thanks for your comment dude. ;)

I seriously have to hurry up now...The body gets decent although looking a bit like plastic, but no time to do better... Some normals behaves weird also, but again, time is too short. I have to do some changes on the heads textures, metal parts, then create a proper spec map, i used the global spec level on those pics.

Almost done for textures and render, i'm not very happy with it but i think it's quite decent. Now, rigging/ posing ! Hope i'll have time to rework textures a little bit.

Here are my finals... Goes fast on the presentation, i worked the textures at the very end.

That's it, finished !

It was a great experience to take part to this challenge. I learnt a lot on zbrush, a lot on low poly and a lot on me... I have a clearer view of my strong and weak points. I'm really motivated to create some new next gen character, so you'll se some of my work soon ! ;)

I'd like to thanks my girlfriend, she cheers me up ad gave me really pertinent critics. I'd also like to thanks Neobear and Xabi, FrozzT also for his good crit at the right time. And thanks to everyone who let a comment on my thread, you were few but really apreciated. :)

Time for a good sleep now ! See you next year for a new WAAAAAAR !

can't wait to see more of your work. Character design is really inspirational, the highres looks very nice. I wish you had more time for textures and final renders, I can feel you because I always run out of time as well :(

Thanks a lot mate ! Yeah textures and render was done in haste, didn't made a very good use of my time... As my favorite step is modeling and sculpting, i spent too much time on the highpoly and also goes in modeling issues, especially on the wings.
On the other and, the human is weak... I felt a bit lost at some times while looking on other wips, feeling that my character wasn't good enough, etc... But it was a really good experience. :)

Hope we will manage to see time no longer as an enemy but as a friend. ^^
