Kay, i'm in, having character design & studies as topic for diploma and full time on this challenge would fit it pretty well. Also theme is given here for free, would be dumb not to use this oppurtinity right? Btw. pretty funny every time i'm doing important projects for academy, searching for themes or story, something pops up and suits my needs.
I choose Norm - Invoker for race and class.

didn't have a lot of time this week, my girlfriend and I found a new appartment we're moving to in 2 months, so had to do clarify some stuff there..
but here are some doodles to get me in the mood. I'm kind of aiming for a mix of medieval and scifi wizard. But I don't have a right feeling with everything yet.
My Invoker will stoke Anti Matter to blast his enemies, also thinking of an anti-matter pet. But i suck at drawing it :p
Ideas, c&c are very welcome :)

seems as no one has commented here before...weird thing about forums that.
Anyways, maybe you should try to make him more "linked" to a natrual element, a staff is a good idea but try and mix things up, try crazy things ^^

drawing looks good to me, but if he's going to be a wizard imo you should use less armor and more useless accessories like spheres, objects from nature. also making him not-so-strong can help.

maybe my ideas behind this could explain his agil look.. i thought of this invoker as a dark matter/anti-matter, or soulseeking wizard, if demons have such inhabited. As he uses his abilities to manipulate gravity, time and/or space of his surroundings or enemies, he still has to use his weapons or accesoires in some kind of melee range to fully extend his powers.
As one of his last defenses, he may slow down time and touch the enemies weakest spot to manipulate his consistency and turn him into any materia.
Which would be the illustration idea, as you would see him more than ones, fighting the demons inbetween time...
but you're both right, i will try out some accesories on him, and then eventually try to come up with some more char types(weaker) and designs

i see, after learning his powers he seemed more wizard to me actually.
manipulating gravity, time, space are great powers. you can find many ways to tell that he has those powers. for example, if he can manipulate time then you could make him look like just a 10-12 years old child with an arrogant expression on his face. but i'm not sure that it would be better than your current character.

ersinerturk, haha this is a great idea! i could imagine it very well. will keep this in mind for the final illustration.. perhaps have him shiver through dimensions, make him old, young and present while weaving something :)

as I always turn out to not finish sketches, i will use this challenge to pressure myself and try to finish everyone of them, to at least a stage as above.

so, i went the medieval / demon bone way armor of her beaten enemies..
i'm still inconfident when it comes to shading so this is just 5 minutes i went for .. will try out the fragile wizard look now.. maybe i can manage a mix between medieval and scifi look of the armors.. humm..

i'm really slow with this stuff, as i find lots of errors while drawing and still end up with lots of them :) one final sketch per day is not much but i'm trying my best.
yesterday i broke my head on the fragile sorcerer pose.. still not happy but right now i'm just going with what i got. more updates on that soon.
conor: thx alot, you're absolutly right, proportions are off! i corrected them, and will also post that later..
ferx: thx! struggling with the mix right now, lets see what i'll figure ;) hope to also get the time to check your threads and wips ...
the above drawings are the best i ever did.. i kind of like both the same for the quality i reached there.. but i think they are really really stereo typed... and i need more confidence in all this drawing and painting stuff.... humm :/, i always lack confidence when failing, while drawing...

only thing that makes him ugly is bold lines on face i think. rest is pretty good. or you can try another head with hair on sides?

Hey.. He kind of look like hes having a mental breakdown or something. :) But seriously i think you're progressing just fine. The earlier ones looked more like supergeneric superhero poses (they look like, "hey im trying to look confident and hot"), this one is more interesting and does look fragile to me (sure its a tad stiff but still more interesting). The shapes and detail to the chest looks very nice and some cool stuff happening around his hand and neck. The only thing that comes to mind is that i really cant distinguish what he is, he could be a demon prince, a cyborg or even a norm. He doesnt look like one more than another. keep it up!

FroZT: hm, generally i totaly understand what you mean, and i have real problems solving this myself.. but i want to have it warhammer 40k like.. i thought everything human is no demon.. but it could be cyborg yeah.. i don't want light happy people.. more worn off, scarred, just darker :p
made i quick oversketch for this.. to get better pose proportion and dynamic in the pose.. fixing this on monday..
ah damn, i want to draw good poses at first try :/

i tried something new now, something which i've only done one time before, and i see alot around here
silhouettes or thumbnails..
I still don't get, where to focus on when doing humans.. allthough its supposed to underline the design of shapes, i merlely find it useful yet, only for pose or strong differences in overall shape like skinny or bold..
if someone reads this and knows how to get more out of this technic, please, enlighten me :)

Hi! This is looking great! I like the poses a lot - very expressive.
I find that working with silhouettes is great for composition and to better focus on the line of action for dynamic drawing (and correct it if it seems wrong). It's also a great tool for costume design - a colleague of mine likes to work with a series of silhouettes and experiment by erasing lines to create a costume structure. Pretty clever
In the previous draws, I like where you are going but I think what bugs me is that the knees seem weak, ready to give, while the upper part of the body, well, can't seem to decide if it is agressive, menacing or weak as well. Perhaps a repositionning of the legs might help? If you want him weakaned but still holding on, perhaps keeping the knees and having him fully rely of his staff to keep standing, outting all his weight on it?
Of course, this is my own very humble opinion :) Hope it helps

MarianneM: yeah i'm slowly getting used to it.. its a lot of fun actually.. You're right with the pose.. but i didn't get the weight constructed the right way for it.. hopefully i'll come up with some more drawings and thumbs just for the fun of it ;)
had to do some kitchen price researches :p just one more thumb while phoning.. will be updated to more tomorrow

updated the above silhouettes, reused previous ones and added stuff mostly.
humm feel like not coming up with something new.. in mind of my past studies the last months i wanted to go with humans.. to hopefully use what i've learned about anatomy and stuff..
i still like the first drawing most, with the idea of materia changing mage..
any ideas, different directions, advises or new approaches would be much appreciated, i'm here to learn! feel like being not creative enough..

hellguardian, nellement: the silhouettes you both picked, are in my top 3 also.
i feel a little exhausted at the moment, may come through the intense studies i did the last months.. need more rests in between pushing me right now.. hopefully i get more productive again soon.. confidence is what i'm trying to achieve right now.. but still doesn't work..
i learned today what those silhouettes were good for, drawing over them is really easier .. as you've made most of the decision for form shape and perspective through the shapes..
i will still have to train this much more often to gain understanding of its full potentials.. as i have problems with pose, perspective and shape while thinking of design and the shape as a whole black.. perhaps i have to even break up the steps in more little ones in terms of decisions.. for overall form of the character, settle and stick with that,, than do decisions for armor.. settle and stick.. i currently step back and forth with ideas not really wanting to decide where to go.. besides doubting the quality of my work..
which surely isn't bad ? but not as good as i want it to be for myself.. some wip from earlier this day.. helping my sister to learn math atm.. *mumble*

The right one is great,I really like the behind head part of him,maybe use the mouth mask from the left one and add it to the righ one,I like the weapon from the left one more ,keep going man gonna be awesome

actually starting to like the shape and all too .. did two more little changes for variation.
edit: for the right one, thought of, maybe demons are ghosts or spirits type of demons.. so you'd need special eye-ware to identfy and see them.. clearly..

damn, you sure have been putting alot of work in your development process already! I think I like the girl most thus far. But, I like it that you also explored the thin, fragile guy, I would do more explorations like these; so more towards unconventional bodybuilds like the thin man, and less towards the typical broadshouldered guy or the slimwasted girl :)

rhemrev: thanks alot for looking at my works! well i feel for fulltime, i got on this right now. it isn't really much. i got so exhausted. dunno where to go.. would like to follow the fragile thin man, but don't get any shapes or poses right that feel, like he's an old sorcerer leaning on a stick with full weight... looks always wonky like the first sketches... damn..
all my stuff has very much cliche, maybe thats my brain always using those.. would love to break this up.. but .. apperantly i'm stuck there.. or not creative enough..

I agree with Nellement, third from the top with long hair, love that pose! Also, I'm entranced by those knock-kneed poses you had a while back, they're so interesting to look at!

Hey Patrick, you're doing a great job. Your work seems to have really progressed lot since your first posts. Keep it up man. Don't get discouraged if stuff seems to not be working out. Making mistakes is the best way to get better, and that applies for a character design too. I'm learning this myself, right now, lol. The more you try, the more you will weed out the stuff that isn't worth working on. Although at some point, you are going to have to pick a design and go with it, heheh.
I may be in the minority here but I really like the bottom middle two poses in your last set of sketches. They look threatening yet a bit weak at the same time. The middle one on the right seems like he could definately be putting a lot of his weight on a staff.

thanx katie! you mean the messed up poses, where he looks like he needs to pee? *G* they are interesting for me as well.. as i learned alot of how to construct and end up with something different than imagined hrhr.. but still on the track of this, i want one concept that shows what i intended originally!
Raz: means alot to me thx. I need this motivation, helps alot to here that from sombebody, am stuck here in my room the last 6 months constantly studying at least 8 hours a day, surely met my girlfriend and friends, but got gridlocked in my selfs bad habit of putting me down somehow.
as i said, i'm still on this weak structure trip aside from finishing started drawings.. also doing posemaniacs gestures and doodling for study...
its so much time till may... don't feel comfortable yet to stick with one of these chars.. think its to less concepts? for 14 days ... hum..
so heres another as near as finished drawings.. don't have any better idea yet to make them more appealing, any suggestions?

This is really forming up nicely. Your character is a bit simple, but still effectful. You also manage to create a nice complete image at the same time :)

Looking good! The only thing I would watch out for is the lighting, it's very moody, which is great, but it hides your character a lot, which can work against you. I wonder if you could get more bounce light onto him or something?
Also I like the colours you picked for the background :D!

Hey this is really coming along man! I agree with trying to get some more bounce-light on your character. The environment is shaping up really nicely around him though. Why'd you take out the cracked ground? I liked that look.

thx, guys! i still feel that its boring and colors and lighting are wrong.. will just leave it as is.. and try to make more.. just mileage..
getting really carried away by the good weather here in germany.. had a water leak in the neighbours appartment this morning.. flooded all over...
tried to sketch today without lines first, to get a better workflow for the final.. now, that i once, I have a good feeling with the colors.. i miss my lines.. dunno how to work with blocky color stuff.. will have to speed up to get a cool comp for the final illustration
anyway compositions are still boring perhaps i'll get some demons in there and perspective more on to ground level...
does anyone have some advises, how to work with these blockies?

kay, guess i need to work more with ref now.. specially for those smokey anti materia stuff i'd like to paint .. but don't have an exact picture in my mind.. also it's so hard to paint a figure for me without knowing exactly where all details lie (without a line drawing)..
hope this will come some day, with more experience and mile age?

I gotta say that woman design you had was way more appealing for me but at the same time this one has a sense of strength and intimidation in a wise cynical kind of way.. keep up the good progress and I am sure you have learned and grown through this .. good job and stay strong to the finish .

oh guys, i think i won't be able to finish, applied to a fulltime job offer.. and got to solve an assignment which will decide if i get taken or not, till 11th of may,..
so.. dominace war is sadly not as important as this.. i hate not being able to finish something.. but also happy to be given such great chance..

So you are gonna finish? Sweet! I've been fairly busy so haven't had time to drop in on other people's work for abit, but I see you asked about working with blocks. You sound like me, don't have a background in 'painting' as such, yeah? XD! Well this is digital painting, so really anything goes...Personally I used vector or hard edged brushes to block out shapes and sections on different layers, then you highlight which layer you want, go to 'select' - 'load selection', then you can work on that one part without having to worry about going outside the lines.
Though you seemed to have no issue with it anymore, I thought I'd put it out there anyway XD!
I like the pose of the latest, it's very dramatic :D!

katie: thx, alot katie! and yes, i haven't got a real painting background.. the thing i meant with seeing and blocking out shapes, the technical part in photoshop is not the problem.. i just have problems painting the light and shadow on the forms and to know them, before i paint.. i think this comes more with experience..
i don't use a lot of selections, i just brush n paint alot till i got the forms i want.. with selections i don't get this results yet.

allthough i will never be satisfied with anything i do, i still don't think this stuff is worth any final..
i got alot faster this challenge.. painted this following one in 6 hours yesterday, just to find, that the composition and action is boring :p faster doesn't eventually mean better..
i want to explore this "energy glowing" character, but need to study more ref, for smoke and sci fi plasma what ever..
got to do some household stuff today, starting a new one tomorrow..
