ok, i made some first sketches of the beast and the small freak.
Here they are: (

I hosted my image by ImageShack, does anyone got any tipps ho to post my picture bigger without any link, like evryone does ?

03-17-2009, 03:22 PM
Hehe nice sketches. His abnormally large jaw is awesome.
I like the top right version of his deepsea mount as well, 50% small body and 50% terrifying head with tentacles that would devour you in seconds. :buttrock:

03-17-2009, 03:36 PM
thank you for your reply. The top right is a close up of the head, maybe I should write it on the image. The jaw of the small guy is inspired by deepsea fishes like this one:

Hi, nice concept there, if u want to make the pic bigger, u must copy paste the "direct url" link and then click the "insert image" icon when u repplying message, some windows will pop up, and enter your URL there, and u can see ur big image.

here I`ll help u :)

03-17-2009, 05:07 PM
thank you for the information, you were a great help

03-17-2009, 08:19 PM
Hey Sebastian, I like the idea of the little Invoker, could lead to a really cool looking little guy which most people are not doing, Not sure about his pet as of right now tho, idea of tentacles for his mouth is great, but maybe when you post up next round of concepts I can understand the character a little better but keep it up man

A small update, a quick sketch of my character with a harpoon. I want the hat to be combined from different parts of fishes, shells and sea creatures. At the top he wears the fin of a shark

03-18-2009, 02:28 PM
That little dude is cool! Hey, I don't think it would be much of a problem to put the viking ship, cause it's really not the actual means of transport of this guy. I think the no vehicle rule applies more to motorized vehicles and that sort of stuff..... not sure.....

03-19-2009, 12:21 PM
thank you GaesHerald, I still think about the ship, but probably ill keep it.

Yesterday I sketched some weapons for my little freak. Because he is an invoker he need some kind of magic stick, its a bit boring, but i dont want to make a simple harpoon and call it magic weapon. My favourites are C, E and F, or a combination of those.

waiting for your comments

I started modelling the little freak this weekend. Here it is. Still a lot of work to do.

03-22-2009, 12:45 PM
all those staffs look good, but little guy and staff should complete each other about details, so i would pick C or H. you have a nice and original concept, keep going!

03-23-2009, 03:37 PM
If this little trouble has a ship, then C is my favorite, cause it has steering wheel. You might think it's just a symbolic piece, but it can complete the concept.
Maybe without this piece (rod) anyone can control the ship but him

Anyway, i like the character..
Can't wait to see detailed 3D version..

Keep it up

a very fast first version of the blind beast, later it will get a lot of armor and cool stuff.

03-24-2009, 07:07 PM
Good start with the modeling! I like staffs F and I

03-29-2009, 12:54 AM
another update. The armor of the beast is almost finished

03-29-2009, 06:14 PM
the first pic of the little freak and his pet together. I make a little break with modelling now. After mirroring I have 8000 polys. The next step is the uv layout, I think this will take some time.

04-12-2009, 09:10 PM
I posted nothing for a while. I had some problems with my concept, because I recognized, that im not able to create two cool characters with the poly and texture limits. The main problem was that, the texture space for the little freak would be much too small, although he is the main character and the blind beast only is pet.

So I kicked the beast and deciced to put more detail in the litle fishy freak.
He has a cool weapon now, builded from a steering wheel and a mysterious toxic ammonite, he found in the deep sea. On his back he has got a dried fish, for storng stuff, especially his fishing net. He needs it often to catch food for his ammonite.

04-17-2009, 03:15 AM
I started with texture painting today. Some comments would be nice.

04-17-2009, 03:45 AM
Sweet, I wondered where you had been all this time. This little fellow is coming along great. I'm not sure if the poly limits apply to the pet as a separate character or not, it's a pitty you couldn't include it. Anyway, this guy is good enough on its own :)

04-17-2009, 05:07 AM
Nice work on the model so far.. Will you be sculpting him later on?

04-17-2009, 02:44 PM
thank you very much for your comments, im not alone in this thread at all ;)

GaeasHerald: I was sad in the beginning too, but it was the right decision. Better having one cool character than two medium, I think.

GregStrangis: I will make my normal maps with crazy bump. This programm is really great, I use it on work every day and my skills in photoshop are much better than in zbrush. So in the end I take my colormap from PS. make a greysacle map. tweak the contrast and the layer styles a little and can convert it in CB in a few minutes. And I dont have trouble wit two douzend subtools in Zbrush.

04-17-2009, 11:38 PM
another little update before I go to bed. He got teeth now, what makes him way more evil.
I made a quick testrender, but only with fast normalmap and no specular maps.

04-18-2009, 02:19 AM
Great character work.
Its refreshing to see this type of work make its way into this competition as well.
I cant wait to see some further progressions with him mounted on his animal.
Keep it up!!

04-18-2009, 09:41 AM
thany you very much. Sadly the animal died. I used all 10.000 poly on the little guy and decided to kick the beast

04-23-2009, 12:56 AM
My new update. Im almost done with texturing. Im not sure if he becomes a bit to coloured. The next step is the specular map.

04-25-2009, 12:51 AM
Hi Sebastian!
Pretty wild textures you got going there :)
You will really have to keep an eye on the little fella and watch he doesn't get too fragmented.

Nice stuff.

04-25-2009, 09:35 AM
probably the most colourful entry so far :) good stuff. I like seeing some crazy characters. Keep it up!

04-25-2009, 09:57 AM
Truly, something different. Don't worry about making him too colourful. I think thats actually a great and fitting style for him.

04-25-2009, 02:50 PM
I am going to agree with everyone on the colors. They are great for this character..but it wouldn't hurt to keep tweaking the colors.. The design for the armor/outfit is wonderful. Very creative on his weapon with the jelly fish, I thought that was pretty clever.

Keep it up.

04-25-2009, 11:39 PM
Hi people, thanks for your comments. I think you are right. Some guys at work told me exactly the same, so now I will try to make him a bit more easier to read. A new picture will follow soon...

04-26-2009, 08:16 PM
I tweaked the colors a little. posed him and added a specular map.

04-30-2009, 01:04 PM
Finally I decided to bring the beast back to life. The little freak is a bit more lowpoly now, but it doesntt matter, because he doesnt have to fight alone any longer
He has got a name now, and is known everywhere as "Captain Ictarius".

05-01-2009, 10:42 PM
my last update.I started sculpting the beast in Zbrush.

05-03-2009, 04:23 PM
my last update

05-04-2009, 09:40 PM
Finished my presentation shot

05-17-2009, 02:48 PM
Finished. I submitted my final images...

05-17-2009, 11:20 PM
Congratulations Sebastian, you've done a terrific job with this character, it is hilarious! It great to see that you've also managed to include the pet and finish in time.
