View Full Version : DWIV - 2D - NavigatorJones - Abomination

03 March 2009, 07:48 AM
I have a love affair with horror games, and all things macabre. And thats the kind of feel I want to bring to my Abomination creature. I love the idea of disfigured or distorted humanoid shapes, with a hint of intelligence. So far my inspiration has been the old executioner masks(masks in general, really), meat hooks, old school bone setters(leg braces, metal), and the traditional venetian masks with the long noses and strong, high cheekbones. For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, i'll post some pics for reference along with my first sketches! Which I'll do very soon.

EDIT2: I've fleshed out my guy's backstory and character. I think I'll put some of this into the Text Sheet :D!

Everyone has a dark side, a part of themselves that they're ashamed of, afraid of, or disgusted by. Humanity is not saintly. Those who feel helpless, weak, and subservient against their will, dream of power. The Dominator is the physical manifestation of every dark and twisted thought that floats through the universe, acting out the dark fantasys of those too afraid to do it for themselves. An Abomination who's very aware of his own painful disfigurement, he seeks out the Torturer and commands him to forge a contraption to keep his twisted leg straight, so that his mobility is less hindered. Now, with the dimensional tears opening up the worlds, the Dominator stands ready to meet his makers.

Given that he is made up of the darker side of humanity, he feels greed, ambition, hate, making his motives much different to other Abominations. He sees all those Demon Princes and Lords and desires that kind of power for himself.
Fueled by the desire for power over others (hence the title, Dominator), he takes this war as an oppotunity. The sucker/mouth doesn't just suck the flesh off your face, it sucks out your humanity, leaving you an empty shell, an abomination that's subservient to him. Those who's will is too strong to be dominated get killed outright.

EDIT: FINISHED!

03 March 2009, 09:17 AM
Ok initial sketches! He's known as the the Dominator. An Abomination that is aware of his own disfigurement, he seeks out the Torturer, and asks - tells - him to make him a contraption to keep his disfigured leg straight, so that he can do battle unhindered, though it does give him an odd gait. I can see clearly in my head how he'd fight. He uses his 'mouth/sucker' to similtaneously eat and restrain his victims, whilst he guts them with his meat hook and disfigured 'claw' hand.

03 March 2009, 09:34 AM
cool head design, I'd like to see more of the disfigured leg..

03 March 2009, 09:38 AM
Thanks ROBOTTANK I'm still working on the full body sketches, refining the ideas and how i want him to look. :D Trying to find reference pics of braces XD!

03 March 2009, 03:13 PM
Kind of reminds me of Hieronymus Bosch's figures - and they've always disturbed the hell out of me, so I guess you're on the right track...

Interested to see your full body drawing - see if you can get the 'odd gait / odd style of fighting' to come across in a still image, as that's not going to be easy.

03 March 2009, 06:12 AM
Ohh never heard of Hieronymus Bosch, I'll have to look him up :D

More sketches! Lots of different suckers and leg types. I'm kind of fond of F coz it reminds me of a demented dog muzzel but I dont know practical it is in terms of what its made for...

Also wondering if i should ditch the braces idea...hmm... suggestions would be more than welcome xD

03 March 2009, 08:01 AM
Been rather busy atm, but finally got some more stuff done. Some quick poses done in charcol because I was at the boyfriend's house and forgot my pencils and rubbers ><

03 March 2009, 08:03 AM
COLOUR TEST WOO. Ok, I think I'm going to go with the first one. :D

03 March 2009, 08:56 AM
I dig the leg braces. don't get rid of them.

03 March 2009, 06:19 PM
Like dark horror games do ya? I'm going to guess Silent Hill was a favorite?

I think this concept is doing a good job of capturing the macabre, the braced disfigured leg works because it adds a sense of human frailty to the beast, it makes you wonder who took the time to try to correct it? Who is the keeper of this creature? Did it have the intelligence to try to heal itself?

I'm also loving the skin texture you're developing, nice and mottled and veiny.

Good luck with your concept, I think you have the beginnings of a good piece here:thumbsup:

HI Katie,
Everyone has a dark side, a part of themselves that they're ashamed of
I'm not ashamed:twisted:

Great ideas.Like the "A" arm.
Good luck and all he fun!

03 March 2009, 10:29 PM
Thanks for the comments guys! Goodluck to all! May CGSociety take home the gold! xD!

*gets back to work work work* XD

And yes, I'm an obsessive Silent Hill fan :buttrock: !!

03 March 2009, 11:23 PM
I love it, this is an awesome idea, especially the leg brace and the head.

03 March 2009, 03:48 AM
Hey Katie,

Really great concept! Totally love this dark dark side :D And like the subtle surrealism touch on your sketches, really nice ! The band and anatomical devices on AI and BI are totally disturbing, ultra cool !! :D . CI and DI are really great designs and can work really well with your character. Great work! May the dark side force be with you! :D and waiting for more updates!

I'm back! O_o! Severely intense 2 weeks and now I can relax XD And upload, yay. Also, thanks madbot and ferx! XD!

Ok I had a lot of fun doing these. Meet the Dominator's 'pets'. This is what happens to his victims that he turns. Upon being turned, they loose all sense of identity and purpose, knowing only his presense in their small little world, they follow him around like a pack of animals. They are mostly useless in terms of self defence, but they are used instead to 'herd' and confuse a victim so that the Dominator can get swing his sucker into the fray and catch them off guard. They go from stage 1, where they retain most of their humanoid(or whatever) features, then gradually the longer they remain in his company (assuming they don't get killed or mangled lol) the more they begin to loose their features and become more and more like a monster, until stage 3. I have no idea how I'm going to compose the final picture, but I know I want them in it, to frame and complete him but not detract from him.

Also, after drawing these, I have become quite fond of this 'plumper' look, and so I'm revising my original Dominator sketches so that he looks more like something that was a little overweight and has lost some of the fat, so that he gets an unhealthy look to him. Folds of skin and whatnot. Posting that tomorrow (hopefully XD)

04 April 2009, 11:18 AM
interesting approach and ugly cool ideas! :) the A1 and B1 arms are .. tough .. hua *shiver*

keep it up, would like to see more full sketches, mixes of all these ideas incorporated!

04 April 2009, 02:06 PM
Thanks Syrez XD!

And here is a full body lol xD!

04 April 2009, 05:10 PM
Ouch!! Poor leg lol. You might want to shift the way to the other leg. Although it could have a more painful effect if all the weights on the messed up leg. cool design anyway and i think those colours will work well with the red CGtalk LOGO

04 April 2009, 12:53 AM
Blanks: Yeah originally this pose was a first attempt at the modelling sheet, because I assumed you had to keep your character as 'straight' as possible so as not to take up too much space, however it's a very unatural pose XD! Becuase his deformed leg is also quite a bit shorter than the other, his hips will always be at an angle (my grandpa has this condition) I put a high heeled shoe on one foot and tried to stand with both legs straight and close together - OUCH, don't try that at home! So yeah, for now this is just a detailed shot :D In the final peice he'll be full motion.

Also that leg can't bend. I think I'm going to put paper on my shoes, paint them and hobble across some butcher's paper to see what the gait turns out as...this could be a painful experience D8!

04 April 2009, 04:00 AM
A demon with a broken leg, that's so cool, and the deformed pets are also a great addition to the mix. I wonder how you are going to put everything together.

04 April 2009, 02:00 PM
Hey navigator.. or can I say Katie? I find it confusing calling you navigator.. anyway lol.

You've taken a cool approach regarding your demon! I like the idea behind the leg, though I think you need to give him a skeleton of some sort. What I mean by that is that the way I see him, he seems soft and squishy, like an octopus. Giving him a structure would make him much more solid I think.
Other than that.. cool concept! :D

04 April 2009, 09:13 PM
Interesting design :) I agree with DefiledVisions, that the character seems very vulnerable.

04 April 2009, 02:12 AM
Martin/Defiled: Ah yes! He is meant to be SPOTS(middle/leg) However! I do need him to have a fair amount of upper body strength (shoulders/back/chest), so yes any suggestions how I could make that more obvious would be great! Though I'm not sure I fully understand the what you mean by structure, Defiled, could you elaborate a little? :D

04 April 2009, 07:19 PM
Ah well what I was meaning is that his muscles and his structure doesn't seem to be built upon a skeleton. It looks like doesn't have anything under his skin that holds his body up and thus making look squishy and soft.
There's not much you need to do to give him a more solid look, make the hips more symetrical, have the left hip on the same level as the right. Also the crossing between the dark leg and the light body could be made more subtle.
Waiting for more concepts!

04 April 2009, 04:50 AM
Ah I see what you mean now. His braced leg is shorter than the other, which is why his hips are lopsided, though you probably can't see it all that well becaues I made him fleshy and loose around there. I could probably define the hips more, but the asymetrical look was always a continuation of his deformity, so I don't really want to get rid of it :D He's not the kind of abomination you'd find on the frontline of battle, he's a civilian killer, so he doesn't have to be super sturdy and strong. But thanks for pointing it out, I'll work on making the hips more obvious :D

04 April 2009, 01:47 PM
oops double post

04 April 2009, 01:48 PM
LOL what is this squiggly mess, you say? This is what happens when I attempt to 'sketch'. It's true, my 'sketches' usually end up too clean, it was miracle I left this one as is :P
People who can sketch up those silhouettes leave me in awe.
Anyway, this is a quick look at how I want the composition to be. Though he'll be bigger in the official one, but I'm too tired to go back and fix that :P

Also new torso design. I like this much more.

04 April 2009, 03:29 PM
some original idea here, I wish you best luck mate

04 April 2009, 05:15 PM
Hi Evil Katie lol! Thanks for comments on my Dark Prince. Always good to have feedbacks on my work! I really like your creatures of skinless twisted abomination and if you have the time you should to a sketch of Dominator sucking the face off a puny human. :wip:

Cant wait for your next update.

04 April 2009, 07:37 AM
Np problem Lucifer xD! And you inspired me to do some quick sketches :D Also, changed one of his hands :D (to the normal gloved type)

04 April 2009, 07:17 PM
Hey Katie,

Really great updates and sketches!! cool concept!! Like the serpent style creature from the head, really cool touch for the character! Waiting for more updates! Cheers!! :D

04 April 2009, 03:52 PM
Hello Katie ! First thank you for your comment on my thread ;) And second , I like your creature design but if I can suggest something..I would say that the first image (square #1) is your best character pose !

Good luck!

04 April 2009, 01:02 AM
hey man, great going, you've got one hell of a weirdo. :buttrock:
From my very limited experience, its been a huge help to do some fast anatomy studies, I DL images from the web and them paint over them, animals that look similar to what you what your character to look like and then you start to fusion and everything comes out more soled. Dale duro amigo (go for it friend) great work!

04 April 2009, 03:04 PM
Thanks for the comment like the way your is coming along. Can not wait to see your finish products..

04 April 2009, 08:44 AM
AHh! I return (thanks for the comments btw guys XD!) With Modelling sheet! (guh finally!) Who would have thought it would be so hard to do?? O_o?!
Dun dun DUN....

04 April 2009, 08:03 AM
running out of time! XD! Starting final. I'm going to have to draw most things seperately and compostite them together in PS because A4 paper is too small to work with lol xD!

04 April 2009, 01:40 PM
Composition (finally) so much fun doing the minions XD! Haven't put on his leg braces yet, but don't worry I will :p

blocking it out

04 April 2009, 03:23 PM
Starting colour! woo...

04 April 2009, 03:35 PM
I like your head ... the head of your character, of course ;)

Hmm. Just take another look at the proportions. They body seems somehow to be to small.
And according to your head, you need not to stuck to human proportions. I'd keep this head and add relatively long extremeties, making him slim and long. And this thing around his leg is a bit distorting, I think.
And I like your colours, the brownish-greyish look. Just use the colours of the head at other bodyparts also, that way it might fit better into your whole concept. Perhaps a brown head and brownish feet, lower arms or stuff like that.

05 May 2009, 09:50 AM
hey guys, I've been having issues doing this, it just didn't feel right, so I'm going back over the compostition ;)

05 May 2009, 04:46 PM
Ok my brain seems to like this a lot more...

05 May 2009, 04:47 PM
Getting there, getting there XD...

05 May 2009, 12:09 PM
Ahah, week extension, bless you DW 8D!! I really should learn how to 'paint' >.>! I think maybe I'll do 3D instead of 2D next time :D!

05 May 2009, 03:38 PM
sooo tired XD IMPORTANT! Please let me know if this shows up REALLY dark on most of your monitors! I work on seperate computers for graphic related stuff, and things seem darker to me on this comp than on the please let me know!

05 May 2009, 02:28 AM
Looking pretty creepy Katie ;)

The image is not too dark for me by the way, I'm on a mac and my white point setting is about 6500k on my monitor.

You still have a ways to go but I'm wondering if you're going to do something else to the background to help your beasty stand out from the background tone which is close to the same color as its flesh?

Also, I was thinking the leg brace would match your concept more closley if it were less "perfect" in form (maybe a bend or a dent here or there with some rust on it).

Good luck and thanks for visiting and commenting on my thread ;)

05 May 2009, 10:15 AM
I quite liked your suggestions Segvoia, and I've implimented them, and you're right, the brace looks much better! :D As for the background..ahahah...not my forte, I'm affraid, but I try! I've slightly changed his skin tone and darkened the sky a bit....chugging along! Hope you get to finish!

05 May 2009, 02:25 PM
EDIT: good lord I just noticed I'd completely forgotten his wrist brace. Wow. Add that to the list of things to add lol...

Ok, the 'Dominance War IV' is either going to be a place holder for until someone tells me where I can download the DVIW logo, or it's the final thing given that in all liklihood no one will tell me

Also, I made an executive decision to get rid of the pets, from the peice if not the concept on a whole. There pallette was too 'bright' compared to him, and distracted too much. It just didn't work so I took them out.

I'm soooo ready to be done :D! Just have to compose the concept sheet and text sheet, which is easy enough. Then bam! DONE!

Also, I'm paranoid, and very tired, so although I've checked my spelling three times on this, if anyone notices something ridiculous, please give me a smack and tell me so.

05 May 2009, 03:21 PM
Great work man!! ;)

You can find the DWIV logo here. (

05 May 2009, 03:50 PM
Thank You!!

05 May 2009, 02:32 AM
Looks good Katie!

05 May 2009, 02:37 AM
dig the orthos!...the render is very twisted, the class of abomination is fitting...

05 May 2009, 08:51 AM
Oh hey thanks guys! I'M DONE! YEAH! It's time to break out the  !

05 May 2009, 09:03 PM
