Just putting my thread down, itll ecourage me to get something to show.

Working on Thumbs in alchemy right now, havint trouble moveing away from the generic big dude aproche to deamons, or a balrog look.

Then again Imrod wasnt that inovative but the execution was fantastic.

03 March 2009, 10:09 PM
Right had fun in alchemy making shapes etc, moved to photoshop and these are the two im considering, although they are just variation.
Im going for a massive demon lord, still cant make up my mind about fire/lava or ice/cold, and if I should give him a weapon like a sword made of lava or ice or something. or just have his fists acctually made of lava. That will come later, right now Im going to get sketching in Mudbox to see if this works and looks halfway decent.

03 March 2009, 12:19 PM
After a short time in mudbox i think ive foudn an idea that I like and dont feel its too generic. The idea is to have a asymetric demon lord with a huge arm on one side and lots of small weak arms on the other and maybe even some tenticals in their. The little arms will be the ones with the "magic" power or " inborn fusion of power". Ans im not certain yet of what to do with the heavy arm, any ideas ?

03 March 2009, 05:40 PM
Ok small update, ive been doodling in mudbox and working out where this is going, here a quick paintover of the current model sill trying to work out what to have on the 3rd small arm and what to do with the face/head.

If anyone is wondering im just creating mass in 3Dsmax with primitives and then transfering it to mudbox, sculpting and then going back to max to create a model back over that part with polyboost and start again.
CndC is V weclome ^^
Ill write out a backstory later tonight.

03 March 2009, 09:28 PM

The legend goes that Ndur'Kul was created by a powerful demon lord. He was created an Abomination, he fought for his lord and defeated and consumed many rivals. Slowly growing stronger he soon came to rival powerful demon princes and still he fought for his masters. Worry started to overcome the masters from his demonic world, they sent him on a suicide mission to destroy a rising lord. The battle lasted days but Ndur'Kul defated and consumed the lord.
Apon learning this his own masters banished him into the void. Ndur'Kulwas consumed by hate and anger at the treason he was traped and could not escape, but the demonic nature is thickle and his rage made him stronger and stronger until after centries of consuming the souls of thoses he could lure to him, he defeated His masters curse.

In what is now known as the second rising, Ndur'Kul emerdge from the darkness to take revenge, his body was mutated and distorted beyond imagining. During his solitude he became mad and all attempts to ally with him ended in huge massacres.
Ndur'Kul is now the size of even the biggest of demon lords, he became a lord himself by totaly annihilating the lords of his homeworld.

Since thoses early days Ndur'Kul has roamed killing everything in his past, only the most demented demons follow him. The opening of the rift into the world of humans was an opportunity that Ndur'Kul did not miss. He passed into their world to reak ravage on huge scales killing machine, human and demons alike. He is feared by all.

03 March 2009, 04:44 PM
Hey everyone seems to be progressing nicely, loads of entries too.

Ive not had much time today to work at this but I though about the elemet fusion thing, Ive decided to go for the fire/lava and have huge colums of stone errupt from all over his body. At the base of these lava would ooze out and run down his body.
Also I think cracks showing lava inside will converge to his small arms were he'd use the power .
Im a bit worried about having to sculpt lava though lol.

03 March 2009, 08:45 PM
Ok quick update, I had enought of looking at that bobblehead (oh thats an idea a bobblehead demon it would drive its enemys mad :p) so i made quick atempt at the head. What you guys think ? partly open or full roar with glowing interior (lava). Or something different ?

03 March 2009, 08:55 PM
I like the concepts. The head kind of looks like Megatron though. If you're going with fire might I suggest making part of it more "fluid/fire/molten-like" a slug trail maybe but fire.

03 March 2009, 05:12 PM
Omnidzyne : Hey mate thx for your comment, i hear you about the fire/molten fuild, and my idea with that was to have him part flesh monster ( he was an abomination in the past) and have parts were the fire and lava have emerged from his body and deformed him even futher.

A small update again didnt have much time today but had an idea for his tail, hell use it as a masse to hit things with :p
The tail end would be bone and rock with lava inside and the tail its self will be llong round ligament like things. Ill explor that idea in greater depth tomorrow as well as finding my copy of gray's anatomy to have a look at how i can distort the human anatomy to fit around this guy.

03 March 2009, 11:53 PM
Hey all!

Quick update, a little anatomy sculpt, please dont hesitate to point out any glaring errors, and paintover or whatever :). Obviously Ive had to "adapte" some of it to fit him.

03 March 2009, 12:14 AM
Hey man! :) Nice start.. I would chose to work some more with pen and paper but hey everyone has their preferences. With the latest sculpt i can really see you've been watching some anatomy as you've been sculpting and i think your getting a bit too hung up on human anatomy. Maybe play some more with shapes before you try to make thing "work", just so you dont get locked up in too many rules that hold yo uback, like the anatomy. That big arm is perfect for making something really crazy with, forget the anatomy to start with and do something that looks cool and devestating, then you can work with it to make its anatomy look convincing. One thing that is slightly weird (might just be me) is the back musculatur connecting to the shoulders of the small arms looks overflowing for those arms, or rather i would like some more arms or tentacles like you mentioned before (maybe from behind the shoulder).

As i said, I'd love to see some more rough pencil work, if not pencil work, some rough mudbox/zbrush or whatever, just dont start with details just yet. Dont lock yourself up, keep being creative and develope your concepts. Get a the big idea down before you start thinking about how its wrinkles are gonna look like.. :)

I like the idea of the tail as a weapon, it could be cool..

Keep it up man! :)

03 March 2009, 12:39 PM
Hey FrozZT thx for your comment, Mhh yeah your right I probably need to do something with the bigger arm, I had an idea to has huge stone/magma erruptions on the left hand side of the body(left leg, shoulder and big arm) and gradually easing it out to the right side. Im toying with scraping the small arms and replaing it with a big pincher like thing.

Ill get thinking some more :)

03 March 2009, 05:44 PM
Ive added a pincher arm, it might add to balance. And ive added the rock spikes and the finger should be made of stone at the tips too.

C&C is welcome :)

03 March 2009, 02:29 AM
I appreciate you trying to produce some original anatomy, it looks great and I can tell you will push it to a superb state of execution. It would be cool to see the side with the little arms be like his "shield side," too. Like when the arms are not casting demon magic they are maybe interlocked, holding hands, or integrated in some way around his side and part of his belly perhaps in a kind of coil or tiered fashion (like a big, extra rib cage made of arms) which could be treated like one block mesh, too when you're trying to cut your tris.

Fantastic work, look forward to more!

03 March 2009, 06:23 PM
Hey !

CGsavant : Awsome idea, Ill see if I can implement that somehow! Thx for the comment :)

Ive been looking at how to pose this character (Iknow it may seem early) but with it posed I can see what if new ideas accutally fit on the character without hindering his movement and so on. Ive decided on a dynamic pose, hopefully the character wont be too confusing or too bland. Ill update somemore tomorrow. Any ideas on the pose?

03 March 2009, 07:22 PM
Good going.. i was just thinking, since he was created an abomination at first and then later become a Demon Lord now by defeating and consuming all the other powerful demon lords..
May be he can have multiple heads, the heads of all those demon lords he killed and consumed so now those defeated demon lords are his slaves and are burning in his Fire/Lava fusion and since the Demon Lords have summoning power he could simply summon those defeated demon lords at will and use them against others..
just make sure he looks more like a demon lord, demon lords really don't need to engage in one on one combat, they can simply summon smaller kinds to do the job.
Right now i felt it is going more in the abomination direction, waiting for updates..

03 March 2009, 07:51 PM
Hey Clem,

Nice concepts and Ideas. Agree with GSavant and Namnocilis comments. Take your time to explore some variants and idea on your concept with rough sketches, something like a story board :D Only a comment. Again, cool work ! Looking forward for more updates Cheers!

03 March 2009, 09:21 PM
namnocilis: Hey thanks for your comment mate! Yes I can see what you mean he needs to look more lord like...mhh... ill have to get my thinking hat on. I like that idea of summoning the other lords but that seams hard to implement given the tri count. The other thing is I dont want him to have lost all of his abomination side, it needs to be more balanced though, you are right. I think maybe a more relaxed pose with a more commanding stance could acheive that goal somewhat.

Ferx thank for the comment man :) yeah if you saw my drawring skills you wouldnt think that hehe :) But yes I still havent locked down the concept just yet im still thinking of taking off the big pincher arm and replaciing it with something along the lines of what CGsavant was saying. Ill experiment with that in a bit.

Just trying more poses. I think this gives off more of a lord like "allure" as the french would say.

03 March 2009, 12:13 AM
Just trying new stuff after the comments for you guys and because that big pincher looked out of place I think. Ive come to the conclution that to make him "viable" I want him to have two full arms so Im looking for a way for adding that without making him boring. Hes more balanced this way. Im going to have the left arm made of stone and lava and the other one organic still. Im also toying with the idea of an arm split down the middle. I tryed the lots of small arm shield but i cant really get it to work.

I thik ill just leave thoses big arms as they are, if i add to much deformation I think the character might just look like a pile of ideas with nothing to link them together.

Seeing thoses arms stick out i might try and make it so it looks like some of the arms are of the people he consume and are trying to "get out " or reach out. Just and idea :).

03 March 2009, 10:23 PM
Hey guys had a quick go at sculpting in some of the ideas i had. Im going to try and emphasize the rock/magma part of left side more than it is now.

C&C is welcome :)

03 March 2009, 07:09 PM
Very quick update on the stone meeting the flesh on the back. More to come later tonight.

03 March 2009, 10:34 PM
And the lava-skin resembles a bit the last years posts?!?
I am waiting to see him coloured and fully textured.

03 March 2009, 11:35 PM
DeadInTheAttic Hey their! thx for your comment, mhh I dont quite understand what you mean by that. You think it looks like Dmitry Parkin ( entrance from last year ? As for the head Ill work on that once ive got the idea for how the transition from skin to stone will work.

only got a bit of sculpting done tonight:

03 March 2009, 09:49 AM
nice progress and updates on the modelling! good details here mate.. but wheres the head? i wanna see the head! :) best to you!

03 March 2009, 03:16 PM
nice progress and updates on the modelling! good details here mate.. but wheres the head? i wanna see the head! :) best to you!

Hey mate Thx alot :)

no worries, Im about to take this back into 3dmax to create a more accurate and sculptable base mesh. Because unforunatly my pc is quite old and I cant really subD over 4million poly.
But on the next retopo I ll put the head on ^^.

Im just testing the texture resolution to see if i should make the details bigger and I think ill have to. I plan on making the cracks alot wider.

Ive been looking at what burns look like (Yerk!) so Ill add blistering etc were the flesh meets lava. And im not shure how much of the left arm to make stone and how much to keep as flesh. any sugesstions ?

03 March 2009, 05:55 PM
Hey all

Had a go at a head sculpt, tried out a new way of making the stone, Id like to take it futher and have it like that on the body but the limitations of my PC might make that hard. Also it Might not look so good on the normal map. I'll do some tests .
C&C is, as always, welcome ^^

03 March 2009, 06:07 PM
Nice Head Sculpt, are you going to keep one side organic and other side of the face stone like? btw.. would love to know the new method you found for making stone? :wise:

Good going!

03 March 2009, 10:43 AM
namnocilis: Hey thanks again for your comment :)
Yeah I thnk I'll keep the two sides to his face, dont think its a good idea ?
As for the technique its basicly just using the clay tubes and flaten brush, I got the idea from a guy on zbrushcentral, I'll be sure to credit him for it.

Im still not convinced with the organic side of the head though...mhhh

03 March 2009, 06:35 PM
oh mann reallly like the nasty molten lava state of that image ,really the work is comming along, waiting for the next level ..

04 April 2009, 10:26 AM
Hey everyone!

Iam back at last =D and the deadline is closing in
So back to work!:arteest:

Heres my last updates ive done over the last day or so, today Ill be cleaning up the sculpt so any feedback on the Highrez should be today so I can change it. Because tomorrow Ill make the Lowrez and UVw.

So heres the sculpt and some test paint along with a normal map test.

05 May 2009, 05:53 PM
Hi guys!

Awful week for me, my computers motherboard failed and I cant use it. So I'm working on a low end PC. (its only got like 2Go of RAM and just an old graphic chipset lol).

So anyways Ive just struggled. Luckily I had finished my zbrush-ing :wip:. And am now working on the textures. My low stands at aprox 7200 trig. the remaining trig will be used for the chain and some lava). Some wips with diffuse and norm/AO

05 May 2009, 05:26 PM
Hey their,

Thank god for the extra 48hours, Ill put thoses to good use :p

Anyways update, mostly on the skin texture. Ive put it in a mental ray material, the spec map is just a place holder. Ill work on that tomorrow and Ill add the smaller details to the normal map. Hopefully the bulk of the texture will be done by tomorrow evening. And I can move onto setting up a nice scene for the beauty shot. C&C is welcome as always ^^

05 May 2009, 01:38 PM
Hey there

Despite working on a pretty awful PC, Ive managed to finish on time, here are my presentation and beauty shots.
