I haven't chosen which type of character I'm going to do, so right now I'm just doing some doodles to loosen up. Once I get more into the groove, I'll post updates in new posts and put the latest stuff in this first post.
03 March 2009, 06:12 PM
Bit more sketchypoops:
03 March 2009, 06:25 PM
Really nice studies :D
I'm really liking the bottom sketch of the first one, and the upper left hand one in the second one.
03 March 2009, 08:08 PM
Nice doodles.. good to see some sketches already
Waiting for updates, All the Best!
03 March 2009, 04:10 AM
Temporal, I was actually thinking the same about the bottom guy from the first set, so I expanded on him a bit. I don't think this is going to be the final character, but I do like some of this guy's features.
I also did a bit more sketching:
03 March 2009, 04:17 AM
nice start.... I like the thumbnails ...
03 March 2009, 04:28 AM
I am liking the thumnails so far man, favorite 1 for me right now has to be the bottom left of the second set with the hammer or axe
03 March 2009, 04:59 AM
Amazing thumbnails...hope you have made a selection. Keep it up.:buttrock:
03 March 2009, 07:42 AM
love your concept, I should have some thumbnails up hopefully tomorow, darn life and having to work aha. anyways I deffinatly look forward to seeing how this will turn out
03 March 2009, 06:17 PM
Thanks for the kind words, everybody.
I'm definitely considering doing an Abomination and using a modified version of the guy above with four swords. I'll be noodling with his proportions and some accessories, but I think that's the general direction I'd like to go.
Just a couple more sketches, now. The creative juices continue to flow, but I think I've picked the direction I want to go and now it's just a matter of refining the idea. These are just to make sure I don't want to try something different:
03 March 2009, 02:32 AM
Alright, time for the ultimate question:
...A bit of glowy shit...
....Or holycrapit'sglowingsomuch amounts of glow?
03 March 2009, 03:17 AM
pretty sweet concept ya got there I would go with the "little glowy bits" the last one is a little over the top.. in my opinion atleast
03 March 2009, 03:18 AM
I like number 2. Satisfies the required glowing bits as per dominance war rules, but doesn't take it overboard. :D
03 March 2009, 03:22 AM
Just a little bit glowy shit... too much looks to WOWish. :D
03 March 2009, 07:25 AM
Eek! Haven't updated in a day and I'm already several pages back.
Looks like it's just going to be a little bit o' glowy crap, then.
Mucking around with variations on a theme here. Which ones do you guys like?
03 March 2009, 07:44 AM
Nice stuff Swizzle. Of your last sketches my eyes got fixed on no.4. The pose gives a good mood to the character. Just from character design perspective I like no 3 most, bit God of War over him. And the size of his weapon seem to suit the size of his body (where it does not on some of the other sketches).
03 March 2009, 08:56 AM
I still like the original xD!
03 March 2009, 09:58 AM
i also like the original with the bits of glowing stuff.. besides the last poses look cool, with all sorts of big weapons.. 4th sure has something different then just showing off his weapons.. a bit of a thinking pose :)
03 March 2009, 10:45 AM
Truly awesome thumbnails!
I love the original concept and out of the new variations i would have to say i like 1 and 2 the best.
03 March 2009, 04:44 AM
Nice concepting, love the glow on him.
03 March 2009, 04:59 AM
I like 1 st and the orignal one. Very nice thumbnails. All the best Dude:thumbsup:
03 March 2009, 10:31 PM
Hmmm... Lots of people seem to like number 4 and the original. I'm going to have to get crackin' if I'm going to get this thing done by the time I intend to, so I think I'm going to mix up the original, number 4 and some other sketches I've been doing. I want to get to the high-poly stuff by early next week and time's a-wastin'!
Anyway, I've been looking through some comics and concept art I find particularly inspiring. I really like the stuff Mike Mignola does in Hellboy and Kekai Kotaki's concept art is mindblowing, so I'm trying to inject some of their style into my own to see if I can get something cool that I can use in this project.
Here are a couple of studies from Hellboy comics:
03 March 2009, 09:41 AM
These past few days, I've been struggling with the direction I want to take this guy. I even started making a rough sculpting base just so I could say I was working on something, but things haven't really been going so hot. I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do with certain things, and other bits like that terrible helmet were frustrating the hell out of me.
I thought "Maybe he doesn't need a helmet!" So I drew a bunch of terrible doodles and nothing looked right. So I went looking for references in movies and video games.
"Maybe," I thought, "I could make him some sort of troll!"
Then I realized it just wasn't working. It needed scarier eyes, ones that would creep you the hell out.
"Orcs!" I thought. "Orcs have creepy-ass peepers and I can find pictures of them on Google!"
But then I realized that I was just doing a crappy ripoff of Lord of the Rings and it looked frakkin' awful, mostly because those damn eyes were lame as hell. So I sat on things a little more. Then I watched Hellboy 2 and some freaky-looking dude with wings and a platter for a face showed up.
Then I had my AHA! moment.
"Screw it!" Thought I. "Who the hell needs eyeballs, anyway? They're just a liability!"
Long story short: Things seem to be back on track... somewhat.
03 March 2009, 10:11 AM
hahaha great train of thought! just remember.. stress is evil.. its better to pick something you will enjoy than beat yourself up coming up with something truly "original" either way I like pretty much all of your concepts.. the horn eye guy looks like the most fun IMO.. keep on keepin on :)
03 March 2009, 07:31 PM
it reminds me of Freeza meets the devil, looking good so far
03 March 2009, 09:32 PM
I understand what you mean about beating myself up. I wanted to come up with something I can be happy with, so that's what I've been trying to do. Generic troll-type creatures don't make me as happy as something unusual and interesting, so that's what I've been trying to come up with.
Anyway. That last sketch in hand, I sculpted something up really quickly in Mudbox. I'm liking this direction so far, though I'm not sure about the tattoos; they look a bit cheesy, so I'll need to work on them a bit more in the final textures.
03 March 2009, 09:51 PM
Maybe instead of tattoos they could be scars? and making them a little less "tribal" will take away the cheesiness i think.
03 March 2009, 09:57 PM
depending on where your taking this they could be scars or cuts that glow :showing the power inside or something (sounds like an intel advert that ). Love the horns thought :)
03 March 2009, 10:28 PM
Kharnivors idea is pretty cool with the glowing power instead of opaque tats, good job on the form so far tho man!
03 March 2009, 11:47 PM
I've definitely thought about giving him scars instead of tattoos, but I'm not sure yet which would work better. More research is needed, methinks.
Aye, glowy stuff is always good. I really want parts of this guy to pop out, so I'll definitely be using glow on his tattoos/scars/somethings.
I'm trying something slightly different now. I need to get to work on the final high-poly soon, but this is still helping give me an idea of the direction I want to go.
03 March 2009, 07:24 AM
Doobie doobie doo...
03 March 2009, 04:38 PM
i am so spying on you!
-- really like how the head is coming along btw:thumbsup:
03 March 2009, 05:56 PM
All I have to say is AWESOME! I can't wait to see more
03 March 2009, 06:57 PM
Swizzle the paint over is awesome!! This guy is going to be a bad ass!
03 March 2009, 07:43 PM
Nice updates.. the paintover is awesome! eager to see those weapons and armour in 3D..
i liked the idea of the horns coming out of the eyes, but just that i felt you could make those flesh area around the horn a bit more organic and giving it a feel as if it is part of the skull.
something funny happened just now, i was looking at those horns near the eyes and was wondering how is he going to navigate around without being able to see and then i scrolled down a bit and then i saw this " Never look at my portfolio. You don't want to see what's in it "
:p then a thought came in, may be he uses ultra sound like DareDevil.. Now it all made sense "Who the hell needs eyeballs, anyway? They're just a liability!"
Great going mate, waiting for updates
03 March 2009, 07:59 PM
really great stuff man I love that head
03 March 2009, 11:01 AM
Realy nice progress,I like his head, keep it up!
03 March 2009, 11:33 AM
Very good anatomy in this character :) The "horns instead of eyes" is nice touch as well
03 March 2009, 12:51 AM
Stutts, GregStrangis, kmanning, nellement, MartinNielsen:
And I spied on you! The tables have turned, gentlemen.
I still have a lot of work I want to do on his head. I'm pretty unhappy with the horns and the surrounding areas, so I think I'm going to make them a bit bigger and I'm going to make it look like they're really rooted in his skull. Should give a pretty neat effect if I do it right.
I'm just sketching and throwing stuff around on him right now—nothing you see here is final. I'm not really good at designing armor, so this is taking a lot of work to flesh out fairly simple ideas. I'm not sure if I want to keep him sculpted like this or if I want to build more separate pieces and tack them on; it's not working very well with his shoulder stuff, so I'll probably just end up sculpting everything.
03 March 2009, 01:50 AM
How about something slightly different?
03 March 2009, 02:01 AM
I like it with out the shoulder pad, but both look really good
03 March 2009, 02:33 AM
Trying a different leg configuration:
03 March 2009, 03:35 AM
Really great work!! :D Like a lot your concept and directon for it! The models look awesome. The armor design is really cool!! Again, amazing work!! Cheers!!
03 March 2009, 03:48 AM
Great work. Very nice sculpt.
03 March 2009, 07:06 AM
I like the general style. I would say that the overall body seems tame for a horns for eyes design. I think if you were to think up one or two other unusual aspects to do elsewhere, it would make the character stronger. Sort of spread the weirdness around a little. Anyways, good work so far. Keep it up.
03 March 2009, 04:51 PM
Your comment about spreading the weirdness around was definitely helpful. I have a couple of ideas for things I want to do that should accomplish exactly that.
Meanwhile, I'm a bit frustrated. I want to give him some sort of armor-type stuff, but I really have no idea what it should look like at this point. That paintover I posted a few days ago, while possibly cool looking, isn't very helpful because there's no detail in it at all, and the sculpted armor stuff wasn't very helpful because the curly crap simply didn't work with the rest of him, no matter how good it looked.
Sooooo... Suggestions? I've got his proportions looking pretty good, I think, but I can't figure out what in the blue hell to do with the armor.
Anyway, here's some slightly updated stuff with a bit more detail in his skin along with tweaked overall proportions.
03 March 2009, 04:57 PM
Really nice I like his armor style :buttrock:
03 March 2009, 09:06 PM
whats wrong with the previous armour? i didn't really understand what u meant by saying there is no detail in the paintover amour, it was fine dude.. after you make it into 3D you can add further details on it, even the other armour design was cool.. i agree with the curly version, didn't feel like it worked much..
proportion seems to be fine, i think the knee should be bent much forward to give it more balance.. and those wierd skin stretching feel near joints and muscles of the upper torso, i think you can limit it to few places instead of having it everywhere..
otherwise, Great job! waiting for more updates
03 March 2009, 11:47 PM
Looking good. I especially like his face. How about using a lot of chain mail as his armour? If pulled of well, I think he'd look really neat in it.
Keep up the good work.
03 March 2009, 09:15 PM
wow! great progress! The sculpt is coming along nicely!
03 March 2009, 09:55 PM
Hey Swizzle good progress so far, I am not too keen on his hooves as of right now, they look too small to support his weight if he is supposed to be charging at people in battle, and his fingers might be a tad too short to grip those huge blades, everything else looks pretty bad ass! Look forward to see where you go with the new armor design
03 March 2009, 11:25 PM
i think you were onto something with the previous armor( the paintover one) with the medieval looking leg armor. i think if you just pushed that a little more, it could been great. Possibly a little more stylization to the forms and proportions.
maybe something like this: http://carolinedelen.com/portfolio/knight.jpg , http://carolinedelen.com/portfolio/knight_close-ups.jpg detail wize in the armor. Even last years domwar winner is good inspiration
Right now, the current legs dont really compliment the rest of him and to be honest, the whole character itself looks kinda plain at the moment with these proportions. I say go back to the other one and explore it further.
But that's just my 2 cents. Its entirely up to you what you do with your entry :)
Hopefully i didnt come off as an ass hehe.
04 April 2009, 11:17 PM
I've tried all sorts of ways to get armor working and it just ain't happening now. I agree with you about the skin and I'm going to tone it down a little.
I've considered doing chain mail, but I'm not sure about it yet. I have some things going now that might look good with mail, so we'll see.
Yeah, the hooves were looking pretty wimpy, so I've bulked them up a bit and I'm going to model some separate pieces just for the hooves.
Despite not replying for a few days, those links were helpful, even if I did decide in the end to not go with much or any armor. Thanks!
So. The past week or so I've been terribly frustrated by this guy. Things have not been going how I wanted and I've had creative block relating to any and every part of armor and armor design. I simply cannot get it to work. I've tried hard surface stuff, organic-type armor, armor that was sculpted directly from the base model, I've looked at full-body armor, minimal armor, armor on just one side, armor on just the other side, armor on his legs... and I've resigned myself to the fact that this guy simply won't have any armor and I suck badly at designing it despite lots of really great imaginative references.
For about three days, I'd been ready to sign off on the whole thing, abandon the competition and say screw it until next year.
I've come to the conclusion that dropping out right now would be a mistake that I'd regret for a long time. Not finishing this guy, despite the fact that I'm very unhappy with how he's turning out, would be stupid and it'd just hurt me in the long run. So I'm going to forge on ahead and try to mangle and cobble and push and pull and pound it out into something I can at least be satisfied that I finished even if I'm unhappy with the design. I don't have time to start over and I wanted to be done with the high poly version today so I could get working on the low poly and textures in the next two weeks, so I'm going to try to go as fast as possible and get it in on time.
Here's the current state of experimenting with new things. I think the big-ass spikes look kind of stupid right now, but they could lead to good things later.
04 April 2009, 11:50 PM
Hey Swizzle I know exactly how you feel about not liking your design that you picked as I am or rather was going through the same thing this past week. Don't be afraid as I was to pick up the pencil and redraw thumbnails and just play with the notion of another character design. Also don't be afraid to explore different things with your guy that you wouldn't have tried or you think might not work with him. I am not too fond of the latest pics with the new spikes but that is just my personal taste. Just hang in there man, and don't quit out on the contest :deal:
04 April 2009, 03:54 AM
dude you can't quit...
whom i supposed to spy on? the Russians? C'mon man!
seriously though keep at it. you may want to try dropping him down to the lowest subdivision level and push/pull things around a bit, you may find some cool shapes that way. or maybe watch Legend, i can see a little Dark Lord here.
04 April 2009, 04:47 AM
Lose the hanging cloth. Add back some of the blue swirly armor. Convert the horns on his back into something like wings made from horns. :arteest:
04 April 2009, 05:35 AM
the big shapes are nice and give a great silhouette
the fingers are small and dont have much area to flexibly operate..that is assuming he uses them.
I agree with the above
I'd loose the loin cloth and go for armor. to me armor has always stressed POWAH!, shock , awe......a certain "Dont f**k with me unless you want to get hurt" vibe if you will.
matter of fact
FREAKING road to AWESOME was where you were headed IMHO...you should have gone with this further.
this is majestic & different; with a killer head dress, and the right type of weapon...
It screams Dominance.....IMHO.
maybe use alchemy to play with some ideas of bits to add to your guy...the process is real quick.
especially with the mirror function checked on.
BTW i also don't see any reference post for armor inspiration.... don't give up.
ever considered doing some draw-overs on you model through photo-shop or chosen paint program?
it can save you from model fatigue ...which your rant shows a bit.
I understand....I'm going through the same thing. My mentor just crapped my concept execution (for the better I'm sure)...i am still borderline depressed....anyway back to you's
I think you have a good idea in the midst here
oh and the feet if hoofed armored, need to be a tad bigger for balance sake or simply let the Hoof be big, bold and show.
04 April 2009, 06:03 AM
Hehe, it's good to know that I'm not the only one having issues being confident with my design. I'm definitely going to keep on until the end. I still have time to bend it into something I like.
There's definitely a bit of Lord of Darkness in this guy with the horns and hooves and whatnot. I don't want to push him to far in that direction, but I see what you mean.
I've actually considered giving him a big ol' pair of wings, but I think that may push it too far into Generic Demon #43979875669 territory.
I need to tweak his fingers a little, you're right; they seem like piddly little stumps right now.
Much as I'd like to give him some armor, I've decided it just won't work. Maybe for a different character later on down the line, but not this guy. Something's pulling me toward a more animalistic, naked look and I'm starting to like it.
I have done some experiments with painting over him in Photoshop, but nothing really seemed to work and I had a hard time getting some of the details I might've wanted that way. Oh well.
Well, no sweeping changes to the model in this post. I've mainly been fiddling with smaller details and getting the horns and stuff to work. I like the ones coming out of his back better than the previous iteration and I think the swirly stuff mimics the shapes of his horns in a good way now. I think I'm going to keep just about everything here and keep working from this. I may give him some bracelets, rings and other small details and then get his sword working. Once I've got that stuff done, I'm pretty sure I'll be ready to call the high-poly done and get to work on the low-poly and the textures.
If I hurry, I should still have time to spare before the end.
04 April 2009, 01:57 PM
This is looking AWESOME! I really like the design the swirly design around his horns. Keep it up man! :buttrock:
04 April 2009, 05:05 PM
the swirls in the skin look great :)
keep on going
04 April 2009, 06:08 AM
I love the face horns. The model is looking really good. I can tell he's a daemon but I'm not positive what kind. I would guess he's a mage with all the Celtic work. I wonder if you could play with the eye theme more. Like having eye symbols in his armor in a way that suggests he sees by other means. Just some suggestions.
04 April 2009, 06:20 AM
Nice work..love the horns. I think the fingers can be a little bit bigger.
04 April 2009, 04:29 PM
awesome character. i really like the facial horns and the celtic style motives on his skin.
keep it up ! :D
04 April 2009, 05:37 PM
pretty cool so far, have u thought of transposing it to give him more of a hunch on his chest? would make the horns feel heavier and they do look heavy!
04 April 2009, 07:25 AM
Stutts, Blacklion, samoht:
Putting eye symbols was something I hadn't thought of at all, but now that you mention it I'm definitely going to be trying it. It sounds like a really cool idea.
I know I definitely need to make his fingers a little longer, or at least make it seem like they are. Part of the problem is the big knuckles. I think they look a little better without them.
I have thought about giving him a bit of a hunch, but I'm not sure about it yet. That's going to be something a do when I work on posing him.
I've got the low-poly just about wrapped up and I'll be working on baking normals, AO and the base for the specular in the next few days. He's currently at 9502 with the sword, so I still have room to add some smaller details. I'm probably going to give him necklaces and bracelets, maybe some other jewelery.
04 April 2009, 07:44 PM
04 April 2009, 08:50 PM
those are some freaking nice textures Swiz
04 April 2009, 05:48 AM
Thankya, Scudz! I had a look at your latest WIP and it's great. Very nice detailing.
Here's the latest progress on the textures. I'm not sure if I like the markings as tattoos; they look like the tribal stuff that was popular on actual humans not too long ago and that's not a good thing. I'm going to push them a little more and try out various stuff.
I think I'm going to put stitched and sewn designs on his loincloth... thing. I still have to design those and I still have to put the CGTalk logo on him somewhere. Maybe a brand or a tattoo. Probably on the back of his head, maybe sewn into the skirts.
04 April 2009, 08:39 AM
Very cool idea.
Love the horns growing out of the eyes.
The horns on the back don't seem to be growing out as the base of them meets flat onto the back.
keep up the good work
04 April 2009, 04:19 AM
your character is awesome, but the golden lines around the tribal tattoos ddont fit well. but thats just me. Maybe use a glow map around the tatts ... just a silly idea :D.
04 April 2009, 05:10 AM
I think you're right about the back horns, so I'm going to see what I can do to make the horns look more anchored.
I'm a little conflicted on the tattoos right now, but I'm going to keep working on them the way they look in the latest picture until I get a better idea of how to handle them. I'm not sure if I want to do the glow yet, but I'm definitely keeping it in mind.
04 April 2009, 07:16 PM
This is a classic old-school demon, I love it!
04 April 2009, 08:01 AM
Oooh I love the black and gold thing you have going on.
04 April 2009, 08:46 AM
I really dig the textures, the black and gold feel weird to me, maybe because they stand out so much they don't seem like they should be on the skin for some reason. I don't know it could just be me. But I like the previous idea of a glow map instead. but all in all excellent job!
04 April 2009, 01:46 PM
Awesome texture work!
04 April 2009, 07:20 AM
Over a week since I last posted an update?! :argh: I didn't realize it'd been that long. I suppose that's what I get for slacking. I've been gathering references and stuff for several post-DW projects, so I guess I got kind of distracted by those.
GaeasHerald, Brainsample, Stutts:
I know what you mean about the black and gold. People have really been urging me to try out glowy stuff, but I've been kind of hesitant to do it because I don't want it to turn into Generic Glowing Demon #658.
However, I am not above trying new things, so here's a really quickly slapped-together example of what some glowy crap could potentially look like:
I'm kind of on the fence about glowy stuff.
On the one hand... "Woo! It glows!"
On the other, well, it glows. There's a lot of glowing stuff out there to compete with and if my glowy stuff isn't as glowy as their glowy stuff, then I'll be kicking myself because I could've gone in a completely different, non-glowy direction.
But whatever. I'm probably going to continue with the black and gold for now, and if a better solution presents itself, I'm going to jump on it. In the meantime, I'm going to try to work some eye designs into the swirls and crap. That was a cool idea, Brainsample, and I think I'm going to capitalize on it.
04 April 2009, 08:09 AM
well, erm, yes it glows... But i like it more without the glowing. Especially the colour contrast black and gold makes this a bit outstanding.
Maybe you could lower the glow-effect or just make only the ends of the runes glow, but in my opinion it's too much....
04 April 2009, 11:26 AM
looks great, remember me to illidan character.
04 April 2009, 06:29 PM
That's basically what I was thinking. A little bit of glowing stuff might be good, but that seems like overkill.
Thanks. I certainly looked to Blizzard designs for inspiration.
Here's another idea I've been kicking around. It kinda looks crappy here, but war paint could look pretty neat, no?
04 April 2009, 07:14 PM
Hey Swizzle, I like the texturing progress you are making on this guy, I think I am a fan more of the previous texture with the glow, maybe just tone the glowing down a little bit, the new design does not seem to fit him well as it also covers up a lot of his form. Keep at it tho and it will come to ya ;)
04 April 2009, 07:59 PM
awesome progress. Did you test the glow with cooler colours? i find that gold and a fiery glow adds too much of similar colours. but thats just me O_o. i see some potential in your new war paint test. feels voodoo-ish or something.
keep it up, i love your work. :D
04 April 2009, 10:06 AM
I'm going to continue working with the glow to see if I can find something I like. I dunno if I'll use it in the end, but I'm keeping my options open.
I actually did try out cool glow colors, but it just didn't seem to fit very well. I think a warmer glow, if I actually use it, will work best.
Now here's a little paintover I did to test out some ideas I've been having. I've wanted to try jewelery for a while, but I've been hesitant. I think the mix of light and dark in the skin designs works pretty well and I'm going to explore it some more. I really like the idea of putting eyes in the designs, so that's a keeper.
04 April 2009, 01:31 PM
The warpaint is much cooler than the glowing patterns, i would go with this idea.
By the way, the horns coming out of his eyes are totally weird ;)
05 May 2009, 12:55 PM
what will happen if glow only just the gold edges? not the entire tattoo, just the gold edges..? :lightbulb
i think it has too much glow now..
