03 March 2009, 04:35 PM
Hey all! Super excited to do this contest for the first time!! I am working on my portfolio and figured what better way then to make a character for DW4!
Race - (makeup name here)
03 March 2009, 05:37 PM
best of luck Greg!
03 March 2009, 04:23 AM
Thanks dude! Do plan on entering the contest right now?? Or you too busy with work =).
Anyways here is what I have exhausted out of myself today, I am not so sure if I want him to go the Abomination route any more as everything I keep evisioning him as body wise is leaning torwards a Warlord. Well here is what I spent all day Sunday doing haha =).

Some side shots of the sketch heads and some alchemy designs, would love to know what everybody thinks, Thanks =)
03 March 2009, 08:56 PM
Hey all! No suggestions so far =/??
Well anyway I am working on his side profile right now, I am going to push him to be a Demon Lord Imbued with Fire/Magma.
03 March 2009, 11:34 PM
hey looks cool so far , just he looks kinda sleepy in the zbrush shots , his eyes i mean , anyway keep it up , cya :buttrock:
03 March 2009, 12:31 AM
I'd scale -up his lower body a bit more, looks cool.
03 March 2009, 06:17 AM
artistcg- Yea I agree with that head doodle, I quickly was sculpting out some ideas to just get them out there
ROBOTTANK- Thanks man, I think my earlier sketch shows good proportions but the latest 1 like you said needs a beefier upper body.
Right now I am just not feeling the Abomination class, Before the contest started I was working on a concept for my reel and with a few minor adjustments she would fit perfectly into the contest. Am I aloud to change my choice or is it too late??? Anyhow I will post her up once I scan her in tomorrow and paint her up in Corel. See ya!
03 March 2009, 11:31 AM
Very nice doodles :) I really like the skull head, but I now, it's not that original. Good luck :)
03 March 2009, 01:25 PM
his mouth section is interessting, he really looks evil. Perhaps he could need same bigger legs on his back, long and thin like spider legs, just my opinion... but go on, im exited about your progress.
03 March 2009, 05:50 PM
I like the big bad slug look of the character, and it fits the demon lord description better than many other entries. So don't abandon Abbadon just yet! ;)
03 March 2009, 08:57 PM
MartinNielsen- hehe yea man, it all comes down to style as well but I still am undecided =/
SebastianWunnicke- Thanks Sebastian, I thought of the idea of more spider like legs but I would like to explore the more sluglike idea abit more but we shall see =)
GaeasHerald- Thanks Herald, I am in the process of redrawing him up with corrections, I will also post up my other concept for a Demon Princess as well and hopefully you guys can help me decide! Either way I think I will build the base mesh for both as which ever 1 I decide not to do will get done regardless for my portfolio.

03 March 2009, 06:14 PM
Great start. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

03 March 2009, 09:42 PM
Hey guys, Would love to know which concept you guys like better, I am still unsure myself so I am going to model both of them as I said they both need to be done for my portfolio anyways and timing works out great cause GDC is May 13th and this ends the 11th =). Here is my final concept for Abbadon, I didn't bother drawing out his texture as I am not too good at drawing but I already did a test on 1 of my mesh's as to what the texture will be. Next post wont be for a few days until the base mesh's are all done. Some amazing work already being done on our forum I have faith we will get some gold!
03 March 2009, 03:31 AM
I like the one on the left, the face is nice.
03 March 2009, 07:53 PM
03 March 2009, 12:13 AM
For some reason I feel unsure with this guy now, I know he is still in the super early stages right now, plan for him has changed abit to make him a Ice Demon Lord, and I still need to model all his accesories and armor but some help from you guys would really help as to if you like, dislike, hate or maybe love the design.
03 March 2009, 10:37 PM
Well I took Heralds and my girlfriends advice on pushing the slug version of him and this is what I came up with. I am going to trash the other design and go with this 1. I am not too good at drawing and using photoshop/painter but it is pretty clear whats going on. Hope you guys like it and I will be back in a few days with his basemesh!
03 March 2009, 02:34 AM
Hmm people don't seem to want to comment on us lesser folk it seems =/ o well, work on his basemesh has begun.
03 March 2009, 02:37 AM
I think it's a matter of the amount of updates - I'm having a totally hard time keeping up with all of them ;)
It's a cool concept, I particularly like the big pieces he's using to move... the thing I'd crit are the eyeballs on the head, not quite conviced by the amount of them ;)
03 March 2009, 02:55 AM
Big badass Slug is back, yey! Super glad you took this direction, sketch is superb. I should probably copy/paste the comment Intervain just made cause that's exactly what happens to me. This challenge grows at such a pace that nobody can keep up, and post just get buried under tons of other posts. It's mad. You're by no means "lesser folk".
About the eyes thing, i also agree, not so much on the amount but the placing of them. In that sense, I'm a big fan of the creature design in Guillermo del Toros films (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy 2) , where creatures have eyes in their hands, or wings, or all sort of unconventional places. If eyes are the window to the soul, the weirder the eye the more twisted the soul. In your character, shoulders might be a nice spot (....?) Your choice :).
03 March 2009, 03:22 AM
Thanks guys I appreciate it very much! About the eyes I love the idea of them being on his shoulder/ deltoid. I have the basemesh for his body done now so I am basing his head out atm but once I am done I will do some paint overs and post em up to see which looks better!
03 March 2009, 07:58 AM
Concepts are looking really good, but he seems to be more of an abomination than a lord if you ask me
03 March 2009, 08:14 AM
wow! nice concept and all kinds of cool ideas flowing around here.. i am eager to see the next update..
03 March 2009, 09:49 AM
Looking pretty nice. I wasn't so sure about the sketches at first, but I liked what you did with those sculpts. I'll be keeping an eye on this.
03 March 2009, 03:58 AM
Thanks guys! I am still unsure if he will turn out as a Abomination, I did want to scult parts of him as granite with molten lava flowing through but I will see how it goes. If not I will give him some nice and rotting skin don't worry ;). About the eyes I am still not sure but I will work that as well, the tri count right now is around 9200. Anyways here is some pics before I start blocking his form out in Zbrush!
03 March 2009, 04:05 AM
the back side looks odd to me, im not sure if i like it yet... maybe reshaping it some is in order, though it might just be the picture angle.
Also the body seems like it could lose a lot of geometry to save you some triangles... just a thought.
03 March 2009, 04:11 AM
Nice basemesh, didn't know that the back part was open like that from looking at the sketch.. anyways, i think it could be cool idea, something like he constantly excretes leaving behind a stinky trail of poisonous gases mixed with some acidic substance all over..
03 March 2009, 08:07 PM
jett12 - Yea I am still playing around with the shape of it, I am currently using the rest of my tris to model him an armor plate for the top of his back, after that I will really push the shape around and see what I can get.
namnocilis- thanks man, If he can still pass for a Demon Lord I will do magma coming from the back, with all his teeth glowing from the heat and such, otherwise its poison stiny gas =)
Here is a first pass at him, he is only at 31k polys atm(lvl3). Going to do 1 or 2 more pass's before I pose him and continue from there. But now that his mass is blocked out I am going to go ahead and start his UV's and get the boring shit out of the way so I can get back to the fun. Comments and Crits are welcomed, everybodys advise really helps!
03 March 2009, 08:11 PM
Sculpt is looking really good so far, keep it up!
03 March 2009, 08:21 PM
great sculpting progress
03 March 2009, 08:23 PM
ya, the sculpt is looking good.. i was just wondering if that tail part could be a bit more longer as it would be much more easier to move but then since he is huge and is going to use those gaint things to move forward, may be it is fine.. Good going!
03 March 2009, 11:13 PM
Wow, thats quite disturbing, abomination right? Only thing i can think of is that it looks very clumpsy, barely looks like it can move forward. Oh, maybe you're gonna have him use the shields to drag himself forward.. Man I'm kinda slow right now hehe.. :p Keep up the good work!
03 March 2009, 11:19 PM
Hey guys! Thanks all for the comments, it really helps me push forward. About him looking clumsy and his backend being short I am trying to fix that atm, This guys main purpose is pretty much to be a Immovable Object on the battlefield, His goal is pretty much to stand gaurd of a gate or protect someone or something and don't let anything get through him. His 1 weakness is his slowness even tho he will have his huge shields/weapons to help him move along. If I go the abomination route the idea is that he is a resurrection of 2 different demon lords fused at the waste... idk haha. Next update will come tomorrow as I have some oil painting I must go do.
03 March 2009, 11:26 PM
Cooool progress so far,,,just keep in it!
03 March 2009, 05:08 AM
Greg, I like the idea of him eating soldiers and crapping lava. :scream: That would be a very scary ting to find in the battlefield. Being slow may not be an issue if he's really really really big. You should throw in a human stick figure just for reference.
Good progress buddy.
03 March 2009, 07:14 AM
Greg, the sculpt is looking tight!! This is gonna be sweetah!Keep cranking!
03 March 2009, 11:31 AM
Nice work so far. I really like he anatomy and the style of the head. I was wondering if you are going to add more to the sillouette? like more spikes ,horns, tentacles or more extream variations on his body maybe? Keep up the good work :)
03 March 2009, 12:52 PM
The mouth area is very cool and the muscles in his back / arms are well done. Not sure how he'd get about, though, maybe he needs wheels :)
03 March 2009, 06:05 PM
The wheel thing might be a good idea. You could have him standing in a massive platform with wheels and dozens of tiny little guys pushing him around, as if they were using him as a weapon, instead of a trebuchet or sth. This concept has lots of possibilities.:bounce:
03 March 2009, 07:01 PM
Whoa! Thanks so much for all the comments guys!
Herald this guys main purpose is to eat people and shit them out! He is a BAMF! =)
Greger I really want to add more to him to break up the silhouette, right now I just through in a back piece but not sure if I like it, Maybe I will go with adding him tentacles to pull people or growth horns. Still up in the air. Wish we had a 12k limite =P
stridiggio- thanks man!
DTRAN- thanks dude! I need a concept for my next model that I will begin next week for my portfolio and "The Fall" series on your website has me itching =)
Baron - Original idea for him wasnt to move much but act as a brick wall, I like the idea tho of him being pushed on wheels and used to just decimate our opponents on the battlefield, I am thinking of doing a high poly, different armored version of him.
Well guys here is my second pass on him, did not touch his armor and stuff yet, I still have 2 more pass's to do then pose and a pass again to fix things. I am dreading doing the UV's but I think I am going to just do them today and get it over with. After this week progress on him will slow cause I have to start working on another character for my portfolio. Goal is to try and land a job in May so I have much to do =). Hope you guys like the pics, Comments and Critiques are welcomed of course!
03 March 2009, 07:09 PM
Looking good man can't wait to see more!!
03 March 2009, 07:25 PM
cool update. the mouth area is totally sick, it looks a bit like stairs to a real bad place.
03 March 2009, 08:11 PM
I really like where you're taking this Greg. Looks quite unique. A couple of things I think you should consider. You might want to look into making the mouth piece more prominent and maybe some other elements on the head so that he has a more dynamic silhouette. Also the lower portion may seem a bit short. Maybe think about elongating that some? Giving the slug lower portion some more drooping flesh to make it look like it's got a lot of wait and to ground him better would be good too. Good Luck!
03 March 2009, 03:37 AM
Thanks for the comments guys! I have made the correction to his weight problem, thanks Raresh! for pointing it out to me now rather then me figuring it out later =). About his mouth I kinda like how it does not potrude so much, I can't really add much as I am at the limit right now for polys and already cut down alot. I will post the next update when I am done with the next pass and doing the Zbrush layer of texturing pre pose. Keep the advice coming guys it really helps!
03 March 2009, 08:59 AM
That's one badass demon! Well done. Keep it going. I like the level of detail you are getting in the body. It has a good mix of large and small details. I can't wait to see how the armor shapes up.
03 March 2009, 06:01 PM
Thanks Synectikos, All his detailing will make much more sense when he is textured. I made many changes to him these past few days, his head is getting the much love it deserved as well as the armor.
03 March 2009, 05:41 AM
Hey guys, Almost done with the modeling on Abbadon, I am not really feeling his design any more as I realized he would not be a fun boss to fight but more boring then anything. Here is a quick little sketch going off the duel shield idea. This is just a idea of course but we will see if I decide to do a actuall drawing of exactly what I have in mind =).
Special Weapon- Shield of Mum-Ra
During battle Bal use's his giant blades as deadly weapons, upon slaying enough Demons he is able to fuse the 2 blades into the Shield of Mum-Ra and cast an immensly powerful blast channeling the Dark Energy in which the Demons harness themselves! After this the shield unseals itself and breaks again until it is fed enough souls to bring itself back together again.
ROUGH SKETCH ( In no way does this represent what he would actually look like!)
03 March 2009, 09:14 AM
Looking good dude. I prefer your demon over the new design. It looks cool and has some interesting and unique ideas. If I were you i might explore that one further.
I think the barberian guy could be great too but he would probably need to be dressed up in something interesting to set him apart from all the other half naked conan looking guys out there. I know it's only a rough sketch like you said, but yeah... just my two cents :)
03 March 2009, 02:21 PM
Great stuff:thumbsup: the 3D looks very good.
keep it up:beer:
03 March 2009, 03:07 PM
wow! this is really coming along greg! awesome progress! I am going to have to agree with soggyclog. But yeah keep it going!
oh yeah...we have another art show at the fall(the place where i painted the "the fall" image) in a few months. you should come. PM if you like to know the deets.
03 March 2009, 05:53 PM
Soggy - Yea I feel ya man, I just had it on my head and wanted to do a quick sketch of it, not so sure about it now tho as well haha. Glad you like my demon :applause:
Ataulfo - Thanks man!
Dtran - Thanks dude, still working alot of stuff out with him, I defiantly would come as long as I can land a job here in Vancouver when I start showing my website and stuff in May. I will send ya a pm!
Here is a third Pass on Abby, the shield design right now is going to go, I am going to go with a more stylized sculpted feel, the spikes just look too generic to me. Let me know what you guys think of the front and back plates. The teeth in his ass will stay of course I just did not UV them yet. Still a little more clean up to do on his body then I want to throw a base coat of texture down in Zbrush to see how things look. Comments and Critiques are welcomed! Thanks for all your help guys!! :wip:
03 March 2009, 06:12 PM
Its Awesome dude! also liked the way you covered the back part, it will look great once u color the inside flesh part.. i agree with you, the spikes are looking very generic and something stylised will be better.. Great going!
03 March 2009, 09:26 AM
Looking great man!
Heres some random reference for his bum:
03 March 2009, 08:08 PM
lookin bad ass dude! one suggestion though (if no one has mentioned it yet), you should consider making the back of his body longer. It would make him seem larger and make him look more balanced.. you have a great design either way :)
03 March 2009, 04:11 AM
Keep motivated Greg, and don't quit on Big bad Abby.
Yeah, the spikes are a bit too generic, but you should take into consideration if they are really going to have a lot of visual weight in the final piece or not. If the pose of the character is such that the spikes don't show that much, then don't waste your energy detailing them. ;)
And about the length of his back side, I think the trail of lava will balance him out.
I guess he'll look breathtaking with a frog perspective, massive lava-glow backlighting and tiny soldiers running away. Just don't give up and keep moving forward!
04 April 2009, 05:10 AM
Thanks for all your support guys I really appreciate it! As far as changing things up on him I am going to leave him as is *for right now*. I will finish texturing him and posing and such and if I decide to stay with him I will probably go back and rework some of the modeling then as this was done in a few days and a bit of a rush. This right here is just the base-coat of the texture. The transition between stone and flesh won't be as harsh but it will still be there. Next step is to take it into photoshop and start doing all the gritty more realistic textures. For now I take a break on him and work on my other concept for the contest, I will post up his concept art when his base mesh is done ;) Thanks again guys and keep pumping out that awesome work!
04 April 2009, 05:15 AM
Really great models !! Like a lot the head and torso design, awesome :D And the flesh and stone texture mix is a cool touch on the concept! :D Cheers!!
04 April 2009, 12:58 AM
Hey man! Good work m8! :) I do think you could spice him up more, develope the shapes and not only detail and work with surfaces. You said you thought the spikes look generic, i dont know, im mostly bothered that thye are repeated like that, same shape almost same size, distance between them and amount on each plate. I dont think that repetition suits the design very well. The tail is to much even all the way for my taste, makes it look lifeless, i mean the shapes of the entire thing not the detail. Actually its almost even all the way from under the shoulders to the tip of the tail. Exaggerate some shape more maybe, the shapes on his back looks cool, watching the sideview i imagine his fat hanging out over his tail or even better press the upper base of the tail up so that his fat is forced to stick out more. Most of this applies to taste, so please question my crits! ;). Your doing good! Dont stop developing the design, even the basic shapes!
04 April 2009, 10:53 AM
keep it up:beer:
04 April 2009, 01:09 AM
Ferx - Hey thanks alot man, his texture and such will look much better after being worked on in photoshop but that is for another time now
FrozZt - Thanks for your advice Froz, I agree about the shields , his tail looks lifeless as is because It wont be taking its true shape until it has been posed and resculpted, I am just not happy with his overall design, he will be worked on but not for DW. Thanks again man=)
Ataulfo - Thanks dude.
Well guys this week has been a stressful week for me, I have not done anything since the last post on Abbadon as I am officially dropping him as my character for the war. I will continue to work on him and use him as a lowpoly piece for my website but I don't feel into him or like him for that matter for the contest. I appreciate all the help I got while working on him, but now I will be finishing up this new concept and post it up this weekend. Please be sure to check back all your guys crits and comments really helped push me to explore more things! Thanks again everybody!
04 April 2009, 01:43 AM
Aww that sucks, you did so much work! Oh well more for your portfolio i guess, I also have to agree with you, i really was losing interest in his design as well, just didn't pop like you wanted :D
gl with the new concept, godspeed.
04 April 2009, 10:08 AM
Look forward to seeing what you come up with next. Thought this one was original but I'm sure you'll improve on it. Good luck
04 April 2009, 12:35 PM
very good progress since last week! very impressive work on overall shape, it's really original. liked head and shields, but most i liked is lower body! keep on!
04 April 2009, 04:45 AM
Hey guys, thanks for the incouraging comments. This is a rough sketch of the character I have been working on and this will be the guy that will be my life for the next few weeks haha. There is going to be more drawings and stuff to come but I will roughly explain him and what he is supposed and will look like when I am done with him. ***Fixing character will repost soon!
04 April 2009, 06:14 PM
I am running out of time to keep playing around with Ideas right now, I am going to go from this concept and just play with stuff as I go in 3D as it is faster for me. Either going to be an Invoker or a Clericon still not sure, but I know he will have 4 arms as well as some kind of ancient rune stones floating being rebuilt back together behind him. Anyways some comments and crits would be great as to how I could improve upon it. Thanks alot guys!
04 April 2009, 02:09 PM
Hi Greg, this new character is very cool, its a sound alternative to Abby. I think it works better as a clerion rather than an invoker, but that's just me. What I like the most of him is how he looks calm and wise, yet capable of wielding powerful magic.
But you've got to hurry man, time is running!
04 April 2009, 03:06 PM
I'm sure the more conceptualizing the better it helps. You definitely did alot of work, but I wouldn't say its discouraging. It will pay off in the end. Your latest concepts are coming along. Would you be open on representing the symbols on his head also all over his body? maybe in different forms like alot of tattoo designs.
04 April 2009, 11:07 PM
Herald - thanks man, I wanted to stray away from what I was doing with Abby and what 90% of the people in 3D are doing as well, I want this guy to be tall and slender, His silhouette will be created by what is surrounding him and his light gear that he will wear. I am friends with time =)
SleepingLion - Thanks dude, I plan on doing more 2d concept work once I have his organic basemesh done, its easier that way to play around with different ideas and see exactly how they would fit on him. I like the idea of him having more tats or glyphs on his body, I do plan on having our Logo on the center crest of his head I think but I will def play around with that.
I am about halfway done retopoing his base then I will throw that up so you guys can check out his build and maybe help me decide on some ideas :p
04 April 2009, 03:21 AM
hey Greg, looking good,
The model looks amazing, I can see that you've done some concepts which look pretty cool, are you still brainstorming? i'm guessing your sticking with fire demon concept, which is looking really good, maybe give him some more thorns, become untouchable, looks amazing the way it is though,
like the details in the face as well,
If your doing the the guy with the four arms, its looking good, you have his cloth going through his legs, maybe make run out, and not between his legs, but it would be cool to see it in 3d,
look forward to seeing more updates!
04 April 2009, 05:00 PM
rupy - Thanks Rupy! I am going to do the big guy just as a portfolio piece, I am going with the four armed guy for the contest. I really want to push him as much as I can, make him really stand out amongst all these giant demons haha.
Well here is the first Batch of some costume Ideas for him, His body Base mesh is done, This mourning is costume idea time so let me know which 1 you guys like out of the first batch the most. I need to decide on the direction by this afternoon so I can get all his accessories modeled by tonight. Thanks guys!
04 April 2009, 05:05 PM
Personally I like #3, # 1 reminds me of a butterfly, keep up the good work!
04 April 2009, 06:18 PM
Thanks Stutts, that was my favorite of the batch as well, I am leaning more towards a shamanistic look with this guy as a Clericon. I think I am going to just start quickly blocking out some stuff in maya and just see how it looks on him. I am not sure about the whole in his chest as well but that is a quick fix to get rid of that, would love to know what more of you guys think! Here is another quick costume. Thanks guys
04 April 2009, 11:54 PM
I'm going to say I like the Idea of 1 and 4. 1 cause of the wings..and upper body armor and 4 cause of the lower body. I like the latest direction. Keep it up.
04 April 2009, 12:04 AM
SleepingLion - Thanks man Going to play with this right now as time is running short, I will keep pushing it tho as I feel it has alot of potential, or hope so =P
Ok The base is blocked out, I am going to start laying the UVs for everything, Comments and Critiques are welcomed. I promise to deliver on this guy!
04 April 2009, 05:16 PM
Hey Greg, watch out for the poly flows as your character's poly doesnt flow with the anatomy.
It will be useless to animate on if it doesnt flow with anatomy. Besides, it would look more convincing. You may want to do some research on how the expert do theirs.
04 April 2009, 06:11 PM
Looking good man! Definitely like the new design a lot better. :buttrock:
04 April 2009, 10:39 AM
Really nice so far, cmon let's see some zbrushing there:)
04 April 2009, 05:05 PM
You are Effing crazy switching up like this, but.....you totally pulled it off! and i like this guy alot more! Wicked progression and with such speed. Kudos to you. Go Go Go Goooo!
04 April 2009, 07:14 PM
I've missed all this updates Greg, this is coming along great! One little thing, the hole in his chest may need more work, cause atm it feels like a really big bullet hole :argh:. Maybe if he had some piece of clothing that went through the hole and wrapped around the rest of his body, it would look more intentional.:)
The rest is amazing and you did it so fast. You really are firiends with time!
04 April 2009, 08:55 PM
TuBui - Thanks for you concern man, I will look into it!
Stutts - Thanks glad you aprove =)
nellement - This is just a taste of the much zbrushing to come =P
David - Lol Thank you for the crazy compliment man! I think I got a few gray hairs this past week trying to figure shit out haha.
Herald - I have been kicking myself about the whole as well, I cleaned up some tris so now I am left with around 700 or so to play with that hole. I think I am going to bring chains or straps through it wrapping around the sacred stone he carries on his back but we will see.
Thanks for the support guys! I did not get much time working on this guy but this week will be crunch week so alot will get done. I decided to drop the chaotic floating pieces for now as I am going for a smooth overall look on this guy and the new piece seems to flow more but I am open of course to change =/. Did'nt touch his accesories yet and body is just at 100k polys but I am more or less happy so far with him. Comments and Crits are more then welcomed and I hope everybody has a Happy Easter!!

That's looking great, like the head especially. Maybe his arms need to be a bit bigger but not sure. Look forward to seeing more...
04 April 2009, 11:45 PM
Sweet!...dig the face!..overall very clean...the abdominal muscle groups look great, but may I suggest breaking the symmetry on them?...I'm intrigued about the geometry behind him tho'...do ya plan on redistributing some triangles or is this enough?..
dig the progress!...
04 April 2009, 12:51 PM
This new character looks much better than the other one. The last update looks great.
keep it up:beer:
04 April 2009, 02:27 PM
Hey man.. good job on the new character!..crazy how fast you managed to turn stuff around. I like his proportions and the face is looking nice too. I also like the new back piece you have for him. I did not like too much the floating broken up pieces that you had before... good luck, look forward to the progress of this guy
04 April 2009, 03:41 PM
hi Greg,:) Cool character, the head looks great and a good muscle definition to.;)
I agree with BaronImpossible on the arms, think it would be nice if the bottom arms was a bit bigger, maybe just the forearm of them.
looking forward to see updates on your work... Cheers!

Simon - Glad you like the head =), In the next update his arms will be slightly bigger
johnwoo - Thanks for your comment john, I actually am not sure If I am going to continue with his design this way, right now I am working on something for him I feel is much stronger but we shall see !
Ataulfo - Glad you like him over the big guy!
Francisco - Thanks man, I just want to finish in time haha, I too like the new back piece but his new design I am working I will post soon!
Kenneth - Thanks Ken, I usually try and build up the form at really low lvls so when it gets to a higher lvl there is not much to do but add the fun details and such.
Will post update on an alternate design for him soon to see which 1 looks more interesting. Thanks for your support guys, the more the better! Please let me know what you think of this real quick block in of his chest piece from a cube, I think I am going to add the rest of the armor then see how it feels. Lemme hear your opinions!
04 April 2009, 08:20 PM
man great work , but the new armor looks a bit sci-fi , i liked the old style in the design , but its ur call , depends on what u r looking for , keep it up ;)
04 April 2009, 03:56 PM
Very nice detailing Greg, your skills are mad man! The new armour is perfectly executed, but I liked it better without it, cause its more coherent with it being a clericon. IMO, you should aim at sth that looks more like a guru and less like a warrior. ;)
04 April 2009, 07:54 PM
Looking good. The armor does have certain sci-fi feel but it could be the shder making it look like that too. I like the look of the head great sculpting.
04 April 2009, 08:35 PM
Wow that last update is looking sweet! You're fast... I also admire that you don't get too married to anything, constantly exploring new ideas...
04 April 2009, 08:58 PM
Great job on the sculpting! Looking great. Glad to see it all being put together! Can't wait to see the rest of the armor.
04 April 2009, 09:14 PM
artistcg- Thanks man, I agree thats why I decided to drop his chest piece =)
Herald- I agree that he looks better without, I figured it couldn't hurt to give it a try hehe
JRBarton- I am glad you like his head, seems to be everybody's favorite ;)
Soggyclog- Thanks Tamas, I feel I still rushed everything to quick looking back at the contest already but I must push forward with this till the end now :)
SleepingLion- Thanks dude I am really glad you like it!
Sorry for lack of stuff right now guys, been trying to get everything on my site going so I can start putting myself out there, had some personal issues as well lately but I do hope to be full blast on him Monday, I appreciate the support and thanks for the comments and interest! Btw if you want to check my site out feel free, still need to put a ton of pencil drawings up but at least there is stuff on it =). www.gregstrangis.com
04 April 2009, 10:43 PM
Well guys just started working on him again today, here is a little teaser of just a taste of him hehe, probably wont make another post until his body is done being sculpted and textured as well as finished blocking in all the accessories. Hope you guys like it, comments and crits are welcomed!
04 April 2009, 12:14 AM
ehehe there's quite a bit of modeling going on in your thread
so now... which one are you going with, i guess thios latest (which is by far the best one in my opinion), i would just see a bit about that first armpit it looks kinda simple maybe play with the intarlacing of forms there
04 April 2009, 05:03 AM
Nice work so far...Love the heads on the back..
04 April 2009, 02:44 PM
Nice progress Greg... really going fast on this guy, I like the skin texture you have so far, it would be nice to add more color variety to his skin tone to make it a bit more interesting but I am sure you have plans for his look, but looking good so far.
Also are you going with the body armor? or with the bare body?
04 April 2009, 04:14 PM
This is looking really good. I like the textures and like the definition in arms and chest.. I am interested to see what you do with that thing behind him right now I am not sure about it but maybe when it gets textured it will start to fit in and play its part.. keep up the good work.. Time is ticking away get er done.
04 April 2009, 09:19 PM
Stefan - Thanks for checkin my thread out man! Wicked guy you got going on in yours =). I would love to play around with him more and such but I need to leave myself at least 2 weeks which is coming so fast already to just work on the texturing and lighting and stuff as I am not too great *yet* with it.
vikramvr - Thanks man! Sad to say I had to drop that for time constraints =*(
Francisco - Thanks dude!, This is just a base layer, all the textures will be brought into PS for work done there. As said above I had to drop the armor which saddens me =(
Quantum - Thanks for stopping by! As far as the piece on his back its supposed to be his source of power, so once more texture and glow maps added to it it should make more sense haha.
Small update so far on the base coat of texture and some tiny progress on accessories, I am going to keep him mostly symmetrical as his pose is going to be dynamic and it should work fine that way. Posting this up to see what you guys think so far, probably wont be able to make another update until Saturday. Thanks for looking and please feel free to drop a comment!
04 April 2009, 01:32 AM
nice updates, the anatomy are getting there
04 April 2009, 03:05 AM
Excellent work Greg, this character is turning out to be one of my favourite 3D. I think the rune-tattoos could work better if they were a little smaller or if there were more of them everywhere, I'm not sure. You could try some variations and see which one fits best.
It would also be cool if they were glowy rune-tattoos rather than ink.
Keep it up man!
04 April 2009, 03:12 PM
this is looking awesome man! I love the skin tones and the glyphs. Keep it up man!
04 April 2009, 06:22 PM
Great progress. I like a lot your character. Very good the skin textures.
keep it up:beer:
04 April 2009, 08:14 PM
Hey man, I like this thing so far, the sculpting is really well done, but I have a question: as far as its anatomy, seeing as how there is a hole in the center, what is the bone structure of the creature? Is there a spine or breastbone? How does it move?
Looking forward to seeing this thing come alive!
04 April 2009, 03:21 PM
Wow..this came along way since the sketches..Great Job! The model looks awesome! You got skills. I want to see more updates!
04 April 2009, 06:47 PM
Herald-Really glad that you like him! I agree about the tats, I begin to try different approaches in PS with it but havnt came up with anything that I like yet =/
Stutts-Thanks, this is just a base texture in zbrush, no photoshop yet
jushra-the hole in the chest idea was supposed to work out differently but because of time I couldn't rebuild and do what i intended. As of right now he doesn't make sense haha
Sleepinglion-Thanks dude, I only been doing this for a few months self taught so bear with me =)
Here is the last update I might be making on him guys as some important things might be coming up next week and I need to start on a new project so I have a cinematic quality character on my site as there is not 1 yet even tho I know I can do it =/. If things don't turn out good then I will have time to finish this guy, but hopefully things will turn out for the better =). Apprieciate all the comments and crits I have gotten over the course of this thread, Thanks so much and here is some pics of a little update =(
05 May 2009, 08:27 PM
Nice sculpt man, good luck!
05 May 2009, 08:56 PM
jett- thanks bud!
Well after hearing the extension is until next Friday now I am back in it! Going to start a new thread tho when I post update as this 1 is just filled with so many different concepts and models, very confusing lol. Be on the look out!
05 May 2009, 10:12 PM
Hi greg, everything is looking neat. I think you're ready for the beauty shot man.
Hey, imo it would be best to keep your posts in this thread, no matter how messy it may be. That way people can see all the different paths you've explored, which have been excellent. :)
05 May 2009, 11:40 PM
Herald - Thanks man! Here is another addition to what has turned into my sketchbook thread it seems.
I am testing myself and seeing if I could pull this guy off in time for the deadline. Started him this week lol. I will post up his axe and wires and such this weekend.
05 May 2009, 07:32 AM
So this is the dwarf that everyone is talking about ;) You are a bastard! 3 sculpts in one DW? you got to finish this one regardless! you have to now! Seriously this is looking great! if i may, i have one small crit. his shoulder feel a bit small. i would make them a bit bigger.
Okay i better get back to my retopo...so boring!
05 May 2009, 04:04 PM
Whoa!...nice work there bud!...what is with the dwarf tho'?...why a 3rd character?...whatever ya choice is..I hope ya finsh the little guy in time!...GOGOGOGO!!!
05 May 2009, 05:23 PM
This new character looks very good as well, but i prefer your second character. The one with 4 arms.
05 May 2009, 07:36 AM
Dude, you have to submit a character not an army! Now seriously, you're a very talented bastard, you know? Here I am, struggling with my one single character and you're on the third one. I envy your skills and your friendship with Time. :p
About the Dwarf, looking cool, his feet are somewhat flat tho...
Keep it up, and finish any of your characters so you can take the price home. :p
