View Full Version : WIP: Warrior (Game Character)

This is my first ever attempt at making a game character (or anything AT ALL for a game, heck, anything with tri's!)

I have only just started, and here's what I've got:

724 tri's so far.

looking great so far, but you do know that you don't have to place every tri by hand right? Tri's is what is used by the game engine, but that doesn't mean you can't model in quads and then triangulate the model automatically. So tri's aren't really harder or something... more towards easier since you don't have to watch your topology as much :) (you do but different)

That said. the more tri's you do place by hand the better your shape will be with the lowest amount of polygon usage. which is always good esspecially when you are on a budget.

Do you have a budget in mind? Are you going to be making normal maps too? (another reason to work in quads, is for sculpting the hi resulotion for the normals, those apps arent that good which tri's)

Looking forward to more. Are you working from a known concept image, the helmet and horns do look more familiar than standard nord inspired warrior.

Keep it up and please keep posting!

Looking good for your first attempt. Can you post the concept art your working from?

Hi Tad, thanks for the compliment - the concept art is all in my head ;) I am making it up as I go.

Hi matsman, I'm aware of the tri and quad thing, but I get much better control over the curvature at the front of the helmet (main reason) if I place them manually.

As for normal maps, I've always known what they are, but I've never touched them before, I have zbrush but obviously I really need to learn.

I've also rarely made textures which is something that's worrying me too. F.ex. I have no idea where to start making the hair for his beard:

I have photoshop but have never tried to texture anything before - have dedicated my time towards modeling.

Well hair is always a difficult thing to pull off right... But luckily we have some good tutorials on that as well.
The definite tutorial by Paul Tosca (
Some tips from Ben Mathis (
And some thoughts from Michael Comet ( (haven't seen this one myself yet)
And you can also visit Mindrot his threads (right here at cgtalk) to see how he does it (zombie girl ( and vampire bust (

Hope it helps. Check Ben Mathis his site for more on texturing too. He is great with fully hand painted textures.

Looking good and don't feel insulted about my previous post. Your model is looking very nice and it shows you are no beginner. Another tip from me is to really get texturing if you find it hard, so make something simple in terms of geometry and show what it can look like with the textures.

Looking forward to the rest of the body, I'm going with dwarf, now I've seen the beard :)

Those resources will be very helpful, thanks :)
