View Full Version : DWIV - Mini Challenge #1 - War General Portraits 2D

Pages : [1] 2 3 4

02-20-2009, 06:35 AM

2D ChallengeIt's time to gather up your creativity, pull together your talents, and get ready for a new kind of warm up competition in the Dominance War series - Mini Challenges! Although the theme is separate from the main epic event, world champion standings are assured for the best mini comp entries!

To commemorate a new class of competition, we will be using a modified theme from Dominance War I. So this year's first ever Concept Art mini topic is:

War General Portraits! The rules are simple - create a portrait of a leader capable of leading troops to victory! Your war general portrait can be from any time period and any race. As long as he/she/it looks like a war general, has the appropriate team war logo somewhere on the body/clothes, and has the appropriate team colors [found here] (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=282&t=728088), everything is good!

This challenge is here for those desiring to practice their art before the main event. So keep it easy, keep it quick, and keep it real.

You have 9 days (2 weekends plus 5 days) to finish.

Additional Notes:
- Artists can only join 1 team for any event during dominance war IV. If you start with polycount, you cannot enter another mini challenge or the main event with gameartisans or cgsociety.
- You are not required to enter all challenges. Pick the ones you like, and join.
- Posting your work in progress in this single thread is ABSOLUTLY MANDATORY.
- You can only submit one "up to" 1000x1000 350k max final image. 200w x 1000h is fine. 999w x 500h is fine. This image must include your team logo, your War General's name, and your personal name and/or contact details.
- Only 1 entry per person. Do not create or try to create multiple entries with different user names.
- Final submissions are final. If you upload your final image 4 days before the deadline, do not ask us to change it. Make sure you are happy with your image before you submit it into the system.
- Public voting starts Thursday March 5th to March 8th to find each team's best 5. Each team’s best 5 entries then gather together into a single pool and a grand mini champion chosen and announced with all other Dominance War IV event champions in June.

March 2nd Monday Night 11:59 Eastern time. Voting Starts March 5th.

Good Luck to all those who enter!

DO use this thread to post you work in progress and final submission.

DO NOT make a new thread with you work in it.

good luck.

02-20-2009, 09:49 AM
Does it have to be based on a true general? or can we make it up... thanks :D

02-20-2009, 11:25 AM
Portraits! What an awsome idea :D One question, since a lot of portraits are done in three quartre profile, or at least the body is, how should we go about fitting the the symbol in? Are the vector images meant to be used directly or as reference, ie, are we allowed to bend it a little for perspective reasons or do we have to keep it flat?

02-20-2009, 12:31 PM
My progress on a war general after about 3 hours. Unsure of his name at this point.

02-20-2009, 01:45 PM
My first approach.

02-20-2009, 02:06 PM
Rawr! Let's get this party started! Go team!
Chickened out last year, but this year will be different!

Very early test, still trying things out.

02-20-2009, 02:07 PM
Lol finally worked out how to upload the picture properly ><

Plain sketch, fleshing him out.

02-20-2009, 02:16 PM
I'm linking mine from my free account on Photobucket.com, I recommend muchly.

02-20-2009, 02:24 PM
The colour scheme suits your guy to a T, yakonusuke! :D

02-20-2009, 03:06 PM
I am in :)

02-20-2009, 03:37 PM
Okay here we go.…
I got up at 5 am to get started on the challenge before going to work. I’m in Argentina, so I was happy to see the rules up by then. There’s nothing outstandingly original here, but I’ve got to finish my entry in three days cuz I’m off on a trip. So pleas let me know what you think, and witch character I should stick with. I know the guy looks a little young but he’s kind of like an Alexander type, I figured no one would go for a young guy. He’s got the gift of foresight and he’s blind.
Well hope to hear from you, and my prayers are with you all. We will prevail!

02-20-2009, 04:28 PM

much like REKLAS did, place the logo like it is part of the clothing. it could even be a tattoo, a medal, jewelery... anything.

awesome start everyone!

02-20-2009, 05:05 PM
Yay, I'm in too, here's my first sketch very rough want to make a war general with a shark head and human body.

live2contage: In my opinion I think you should stay with the monkey think you can create something more interesting and original with that idea.

02-20-2009, 05:51 PM
Hi there ! Can't stop workingon this concept :)
Here is a b&w first lay out. I am not very happy with the chin... I think i'll make some modification on the facial structure probably to make the character more agressive.
Crits and advises are welcome.
I start to see some gooooood stuff already there, so goodluck for all the mates.

02-20-2009, 07:48 PM
Here's the full body sketch :)... the character is finally a kind of a beasty "roman centurion".

02-20-2009, 09:35 PM
NH: Looking good! It’s got and original face I would try and keep the same concept for the body…les human. I also think you could give him more authority bay changing the look in his eyes and general countenance (the same goes for my monkey…ha!)

paddflask: thanks man! I was actually going to start a new character all together, don’t know… I have little time so maybe I should stick to the monkey.

REKLAS: great stuff, the overall look has a lot of potential.
Hugs to all!

PS: why can’t you see the image I posted as large as other ones? Sorry this is a first time for me, TKS!

02-20-2009, 09:46 PM
What do you guys think of a full body shot?

02-20-2009, 10:05 PM
Very interesting theme~

This is my first post here

Hope this kind of contest form can force me to work steadily.

02-20-2009, 10:13 PM
Yeah, War began! Let´s make this hard for other sites, grrrr:wip:
here is my start, not finished yet

02-21-2009, 12:22 AM
HI all! Looks like there's some great work posted already! This is gonna be a fun one.
Here's a quick sketch and color concept.

02-21-2009, 12:49 AM

I dont see anything wrong with his chin XD! Maybe make his mouth a little...sterner? (is that even a word lol XD!) I think he looks awsome :D

02-21-2009, 12:51 AM
Wow Rawad, i love those teeth you gave your guy. I love the angles they turn in at. *jealous*

02-21-2009, 12:59 AM
Cool. Finally started! Nice warm up for the big challenge. Good luck every body and let's
have fun!

Here's my first wip post for my general.

02-21-2009, 02:08 AM
This time Cgtalk are going to win.
This is my entry, its very wip at the moment, the suit of armor will probably change.

02-21-2009, 02:18 AM
Thanks live2contage!

Update 01:

Feedback is more than welcome.

02-21-2009, 02:39 AM
Rules question:
Are we allowed to incorporate photographic elements into our portrait (either on the character itself, or the background), or does it need to be all painted?

Sorry if I missed this, but I couldn't find an answer to it anywhere.

02-21-2009, 02:57 AM
A surprisingly kind soul (for her experiences) and seasoned tactician with a strong resolve for victory.

First Step: Pencil on paper - done
Next Step: Clean Drawing

02-21-2009, 04:09 AM
I read the rules and theres seem to be a mistake... Your rules say, " Post your Work In Progress" is Manditory, in this thread...

Then in the next post you say, DO NOT post your Work In Progress in this thread!

So where do we post our work in progress?? In what thread?? Sorry for the dumb question!!

02-21-2009, 04:27 AM
You should look at his post a bit closer, it says DO post WIP in this thread, do NOT make a new thread.

DO use this thread to post you work in progress and final submission.

DO NOT make a new thread with you work in it.

02-21-2009, 04:33 AM
Tibor, that's looking really nice so far - you're so fast! Only thing is, I'd suggest punching up the medals and maybe some other accents, to make sure he looks like a general and not just another soldier.

Great job everyone else, too. Good luck!

02-21-2009, 05:07 AM
Here is my early, rough portrait I whipped-up for the big Mini-Competition.

Executive General Sahnah Antonia Reigns...

Nice warm-up for the big competition to come.

02-21-2009, 05:12 AM
Gatlingg - Outstanding drawing! That linework just makes me envious. And beyond just the great art, you're really setting the bar for character background and development plan. Great approach all around. (And I was hoping to be the first person to submit a female General!)

Reklas - I love the fact that you're going so Non-Standard with your approach, and I like the loose feel. Don't tighten this up too much :)

Airflow - I really like the flow of the design you've put in, but I'm concnerned how it will be judged in regard to "Portraits". There's a ton of potential for it, but it might not be judged well if there's too much emphasis on an action scene. Try moving the concept more toward a tradiitional sitting portrait to fit better with the concept criteria.

Rawwad - Holy Crap . 'nough said. (I really wish I had the vision for light and depth that you've displayed in this prelim.)

So for my part, here's a quick concept that I hope to develop:

02-21-2009, 05:14 AM
Here we go, just something quick to get me started. I'm going to print it out and continue to draw details over the top. Not sure of his name or story so far.

Great to see some excellent work already.

02-21-2009, 09:26 AM
Great work everybody!
Here's some line work over my original sketch

02-21-2009, 11:20 AM
WOW. You Guys are seriosly good.

02-21-2009, 11:48 AM
Yeeeh, war started :)Great start all you guys!!!
Happy to be here with you.
Doodle about a General from a giant underwater race
C&C very welcom
Good luck to you all

http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/8324/wip0.th.jpg (http://img503.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wip0.jpg)

Hi there, first time I enter a competition here. I'm going to work on a lion-man general, kind of early-medieval style. It won't be the most original, but I hope you'll like it.

02-21-2009, 12:20 PM
OKMER: Nice work. It looks like he's drinking beer through the nose :)

02-21-2009, 01:18 PM
Martin,:surprised!Iin fact he is.:D:beer:

02-21-2009, 01:39 PM
Hey, final sketch, was gonna start colouring but ps broke, so I have to get another one, but I can't do that till monday, but on monday I have to evacuate coz of fire danger. For the whole. Day. ARGH!

jOuey: Nice painterly approach!Nice!

Derricksong: Great start man,nice lines.

Started cleaning my lines and took my idea a bit further.

02-21-2009, 04:31 PM

Hey all! Here'a my general, orc or some other kind of tribal:

02-21-2009, 05:46 PM
WIP update~ :)

Really not sure about the design of gears. Still feeling not coooool enough!
OKMER, I like your general very much, very creative.

02-21-2009, 06:32 PM
HI all :D
we got some really great pieces here :D . here is my first draft just to make sure that am counted in the challenge :P

02-21-2009, 06:34 PM
Hi all!, Here's mine:

02-21-2009, 06:56 PM
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk180/BadgerPirate/War_General_Armadon_Cho.jpg Some nice stuff in here, here's my entry WIP.

02-21-2009, 06:57 PM
to Walrus: Thanks Mike, and good point, my idea should go somewhere around General Grievous for example, not so many decoratives stuff, but more focused on charizma. I just make first general which came to my mind (:
I don´t see your one, where you hiding it? :)

OKMER and jOuey like your generals, fantastic ideas.

02-21-2009, 07:18 PM
Here's a first idea - it's surprisingly hard to get a 'tribal' looking general, but that was what I was going for. He kept looking either completely crazy, or like a shaman. Verging on the 'shamanistic' territory at the moment.

02-21-2009, 07:52 PM
Ok, some update:

02-21-2009, 08:13 PM
here is mine...

02-21-2009, 08:20 PM
Sometimes I wish I knew what DW was all about... :)

02-21-2009, 08:29 PM
So, let's continue:)

02-21-2009, 09:36 PM
Lets go to war mates! Amazing work so far, well done. Here's my initial sketch:

Good luck everybody!

02-21-2009, 11:47 PM
so many great entries here!

Here goes my first wip:

02-22-2009, 12:03 AM
An other update. Nice work going on here.
OKMER really like the last update of your General. Nice details, and general shape.

02-22-2009, 12:15 AM
Damn, some amazingly good entries so far. I'm hungry for a win for CGS, damnit! Good luck to everyone.

Update time: victorian/mechani-something themed
"Why does she always have that vacant expression after the standard is raised?"
"Look man, I tried asking her directly once. If you have a lust for fat lips and triple mess duty, you can try to ask her your damn self."

02-22-2009, 01:08 AM
Hello all, this is my submission entry to DW IV... His name is, Commander Raikbor... He controls an army of legions to his victories.. He is highly respected as a true Warrior and leader. His planet is far from a distant galaxy called, Mythian. And his race is called, Tyrannosa. Its just a quick sketch of what I will accomplish later on.. really good entries here.. good luck to everyone!!

02-22-2009, 01:15 AM
Airflow - I really like the flow of the design you've put in, but I'm concnerned how it will be judged in regard to "Portraits". Thanks, Ive changed the backround, it now looks like an old 16th century portrait.

02-22-2009, 02:12 AM
Hope everyone has fun, Good Luck! :bounce:

02-22-2009, 03:04 AM
Cool Generals!!
I like play in this team, my concept is in progress but this is what I've been doing today:

bad internet conection :(

02-22-2009, 04:01 AM
Hello everyone! This is my first post on CG Society! :wavey: w00

Anyway this is my concept in progress.
The character is going to be cluttered with bones / artifacts of slain beast & enemies etc.
And he has sharp talon-like-metal-hand-glove-things (I don't know the proper term for those).

Any thoughts?

My god sorry this picture is so big. How do I format them smaller?
And yes that is like a weird dog skull on his head.

02-22-2009, 05:42 AM
JonathanLin wooo thats awesome. Like a maniacal shaman. :D

02-22-2009, 07:19 AM
Heyo everyone,

Very nice work being posted! This is my first DW, sketch up tomorrow...
I'm really looking forward to taking part in this!

02-22-2009, 07:25 AM
Hi I'm a new member and I was wondering how do i post my work for the DWIV Challenge without inserting an image on this post?

02-22-2009, 08:43 AM
Hey!! great great works, awesome entries for sure! :D Time to join the best team!! yeaaa!

Remko - really cool start, like a lot the integration of the devices with the flesh (but missing the beer can :D) Cheers!!

Tibor - The blue backlighting is an amazing touch for your portrait!! Cool! :D

Kelley - Love the eyes and te expression of the girl! :)

Everyone are making great sketches!

Ok, my first concept and WIP :D

02-22-2009, 08:49 AM
step 6
working details

02-22-2009, 09:27 AM
Some more datails.

02-22-2009, 09:28 AM
I have a question how do you submit work without inserting the image?

02-22-2009, 09:54 AM
Nikolay great work loved the white gold feel in it :D

02-22-2009, 10:13 AM
Thanks saint-max! how going, your sketch? where update?) your color theme is very interesting.

Crix Dorius
02-22-2009, 12:01 PM
Ok... this will be my contribution for this challenge.

Still WIP... but I like it so far. :D

General Hagedorn

02-22-2009, 12:34 PM
Loving the work so far in here, Especially Gatlingg. Gonna have a bash at this myself today, see how it goes.

02-22-2009, 01:32 PM
Looks good Crix, though one crit i would make is that his shoulders seem a little too narrow, given his head size. I really like how you did the scars over his eye though xD

02-22-2009, 02:17 PM
Man, this is moving fast!

Ferx: Nice to see you here mate. Great start!
Nikolay: Wow, neat work!
Gatlingg: can´t wait to see your entry fully colored!

Here´s my progress so far.... "General Double Standards"

02-22-2009, 03:01 PM
so, some more progress on my piece.

jOuey: Really like your knight
Nikolay: Nice concept, reminds me of the latest planet of the apes movie.

and great start so far everybody! ;)

02-22-2009, 03:09 PM
Hello everyone,

Here is my General. I decided to rely once again on a human race.
He is a general of an elite squad of formal imperial guards. That's it for now. Good luck to everyone.

02-22-2009, 03:11 PM
My first attempt, might become something else as I go along...http://fc89.deviantart.com/fs40/f/2009/053/3/f/3f75e8d10153bdb39979075de537ac83.jpg

02-22-2009, 03:18 PM
Okmer: Really nice so far!

Still searching...

02-22-2009, 04:29 PM
OK, still no real idea how this works but decided to give it a go. Here are my first 3 WIPs. Don't know who this guy is or indeed if he's a good general, but one thing for sure, you'd think twice before disobeying his orders

02-22-2009, 05:27 PM
Another cup-of-tea's worth of WIP...

02-22-2009, 05:31 PM
some more progress..

02-22-2009, 05:55 PM

02-22-2009, 06:48 PM
I present to You general Lestat. Inspiration tune for it was my dog, doberman and recently read comic book "Blaksad". Uniform will be based on those worn by polish soldiers during WW II
I need to work to make it more pathetic...

02-22-2009, 07:14 PM
Hello, I finally decided to change a lot of stuff on my character. I kept some elements of the first one and tried to devolop an other kind of war lord... more aged, more experienced... I hope this works better :)
I'll keep the roman/greek style anyway, I like this "glorious" effect related to this theme. I'll probably associate this to some advanced technology, maybe some forgotten Atlantian stuff.

Crits are always welcome.

May the force be with all of you

02-22-2009, 07:17 PM
NH: Looking good! It’s got and original face I would try and keep the same concept for the body…les human. I also think you could give him more authority bay changing the look in his eyes and general countenance (the same goes for my monkey…ha!)

thx for the advises mate :)

@ NavigatorJones : thx for your suport :)

@Okmer: How are you doin' mate? It's cool to see you there :) Your art is so cool dude ! Que la force soit avec toi !

02-22-2009, 07:18 PM
Found a name: General Eyce.
A simple word play for ice and eye, because of his dead eye and scary prosthesis.
He lives in a world which is like 18th century mix with steam punk and fantasy:
( Cavalry, canon but also some kind of steam machine, dwarf, elves... and a bit of very high tech).

I start creating a little story about him.
This picture is his last portrait before his death. A couple of hours later he will die in a quite stupid way by falling off his horse. A shell fell not very far from him scaring his horse. A bit of a lame death for a general victorious on many battlefields.

02-22-2009, 07:18 PM
Great progress.
BaronImpossible: Uh, you are right he is stronger...

WIP.2. walking around:

02-22-2009, 07:33 PM
Ok this is some values and light study on my character...
This is my first DominanceWar challenge and I am wondering about the cgs colors... are we supposed to use only these???
Thanx for any helpful answer :)

02-22-2009, 08:08 PM
Here's my 1st post to DW VI or any CG up till now... So i'm new here. Tips and tricks, C&C are most definately welcome...

02-22-2009, 08:11 PM
Wow, how much updates.
BaronImpossible>> Very good general! GaeasHerald>> thanks) your general very creative!

Everybody great stuff i look!

so, some my progress.

02-22-2009, 08:16 PM
But I think, I like this.
Since Dune was such a big impression, I use this contest to illustrate one of it's main characters. Vorian Atreides, founder of house Atreides, leader of the human assault fleet.

02-22-2009, 08:18 PM
Hi all! My first sketch of the general. Not sure about his name yet. Something like "Feras Consumere Nati IV"
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/9313/generalportrait.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

02-22-2009, 08:51 PM
Well, that's it for today. Taken about 4 plays of "Years of Refusal" so far which is what? Three or four hours?

Nikolay - love that regal look, very apt for a general. Yours is going to turn out well.

02-22-2009, 09:02 PM
Hi All,

Here is my basic concept Futuristic General, gunna make some basic changes to the look but for now this is my core look.

I like what BaronImpossible is up to.

02-22-2009, 09:09 PM
Baron and Nikolay - I am WOW'd Such awesome personalities. Nikolay, that cream color makes me super happy.

Can we post Screencapped WIPS? Use approach like my traditional meth.

02-22-2009, 09:25 PM
New version - much happier with where this is going.

Nice work in this thread -

@baronimpossible - great pic. He doesn't look like a general yet, though - more of a cook or squad leader from hell. More gold braid!

02-22-2009, 09:27 PM
Here's the pencil sketch for my entry. I pulled some reference from various sources and came up with this. I want to go for a classical portrait look, but I want to see what kind of fun can be had with the armor.

02-22-2009, 09:32 PM
Quick Update - thought the previous version looked too 'rabit'... too aggressive. So I toned it towards something more 'regal'.

02-22-2009, 09:41 PM
I'm the new guy, and here is the start my General Portrait

02-22-2009, 09:57 PM
I did DW3 last year and really enjoyed it, so I hope I can make it through DW4 this year. Thought I'd give this mini-challenge a try. Let's see if I can finish this in time. ^^;

She is considered the loveliest woman in China of her time, and her beauty is matched only by her strategic and tactical genius. Haven't come up with a name yet.

02-22-2009, 10:09 PM
Oh yeah, Phill, the cigar in your dude's mouth is total win :buttrock:
Thanks a lot buddy!

Gatlingg: Great looking general, love the line work

OKMER: Very cool concept, that mouth piece looks awsome!!

Derrik: Cool general! he looks very menacing

Nikolay: I love the concept and the colors!

BaronImpossible: Very nice painting dude

Here's an update of my general, just working on the red armor.

02-22-2009, 10:21 PM
This sounds like too much fun. I would've done it last year but I didn't see that you could do a 2d concept until about a week before the end of the contest and I didn't want to rush and make something of low quality. THIS YEAR!!!

Here's my general. Question: why does every general look so stern???

02-22-2009, 10:25 PM
Here is my updated job on Commander Raikbor.. Hes halfway to finish but i still have to do his armor and detailing..

02-22-2009, 10:27 PM
I am new to dominance war and really looking forward to everyones portraits. Seen some really nice peices so far, looking good everyone. I decieded to a mayan/aztec theme, and wanted to try to a hybrid between human and jaguar, since jaguar is a significant animal during those times.

02-22-2009, 10:30 PM
Hair and tuning of the details will follow.
And still no idea of a background. But ... sooner or later ...

02-22-2009, 10:31 PM
Many hours of work and still many things to fix and to work on

02-22-2009, 10:43 PM
Okay here's a colour update. I know I haven't used the CGsociety colours yet, but I hope to use them on his breathing apparatus. I feel I've been too careful so far, so I'm going to mess it up and see where it takes me.

Really enjoying the quality of work so far -
I love the designs from Rawwad, Gatlingg and Okmer to name a few.
Also great start cylstudio81, that's a general no one would mess with!

02-22-2009, 11:02 PM
WOW, Rupy very intense character! I love it. Can't wait to see more updates.

02-22-2009, 11:06 PM
color and texture test :)

02-22-2009, 11:54 PM
Wow, more nice work! You guys are doing great :p

My wips so far - General Gazan was a real General in the Nepoleonic Wars, I'm thinking about trying to develop a more updated version with some modern elements, so far I'm still approaching the traditional portrait. I'm contemplating a robot/human style, but this is my first attempts at characters so I'm a little uncertain how it'll go ;)
If anyone's got a bit of time for crits that would be fantastic!
Thank you.

02-23-2009, 12:39 AM

02-23-2009, 12:49 AM
Hey guys,

Thought I'd post the beginning of my portrait design for the mini challenge. Trying to reach something that is a cross between Samual Aleksandrovich and Dr. Alkad Mzu if anyone has read the Night Dawn trilogy. Good luck all!

02-23-2009, 12:52 AM
I have a question regarding the colour pallet. It seems that some of us aren't using it at all, and some are sticking to it strictly. Is it very important to stick to it exactly or is it like, we can pick one colour from it to display, and disregard the rest? Or is it optional whether we use it at all? Because the rules said to use it, but now I'm not so sure??

02-23-2009, 01:13 AM
Baronimpossible: Nice character you have there!

02-23-2009, 01:15 AM
ShogunWarrior: hey, the facial details on your general are terrific! But be careful not to get lost in detailing just yet, cause the clock is ticking!

Felicity: both sketches look great. I say go for the robot style all the way!

NavigatorJones: I think you can use the logo or/and colors... not really sure...

OK, another wip:

02-23-2009, 01:33 AM
NavigatorJones: The colors are just for the Team War Logo,.

Option A or B :D ... :hmm:

02-23-2009, 01:40 AM
Good luck everyone!!!

02-23-2009, 01:48 AM
Everyone's submissions just keep getting more and impressive! I'm really enjoying watching them all develop.

Here's a WIP on mine. Got some color started, and working out the composition a little more.

02-23-2009, 02:27 AM
Some really beautiful things here. I'm kind of ashamed posting this here now, but I don't have my wacom with me, so I made do with a mouse for the time being. This is more of a placeholder than anything else- I really like this topic!

Instead of medals, this guy has bows and small coins, his hat will be made out of burlap with pine needles stuck in it and a pine cone to top things off...he's nature's general. I thought it was kind of funny, anyway... :D

02-23-2009, 02:55 AM
CGSociety represent! What! Looking good team!

This is pretty rough, but I wanted to go with a classic composition, like one of those Presidential or Civil War portraits.

02-23-2009, 03:38 AM
My first concept , Forest General

02-23-2009, 04:11 AM
Laying down the base values. Time for some shadows!

02-23-2009, 04:12 AM
More blocking in of values. Kinda want to do some organic bone spikey things but I haven't settled quite yet.

02-23-2009, 04:51 AM
BaronImpossible and jamihn, really great work. These two are astounding.
And lots of others are progressing really quickly.

Baronimposible-- i always like your paintings and this one is just the same. Great expression and a very scary general.

Hi people, i lot of good entries so far. This is my first entry in the series. This is a medieval general , (if you see him caming , better run and hide). I just posted the initial design and sketch , the pose will change. All C&C are very welcome!!

02-23-2009, 09:24 AM
hi all

one of my entry...
my purpose was to show a 12 years old general...a little bit demoniac...a bit just lol.
i think a very young general is more disturbing taht an old one.
don't know if i will finsih this one...some guys told that he remind they mister bison from Stret figther -in france his name is bison) but it wasnt what i have wanted...and even more, I DONT LIKE Street fighter...

Jamihn, very cool! Tons of potential in there, looking forward to seeing it finished...

C&C welcome, just the start, go team cg!

02-23-2009, 04:55 PM
Wow! Astonishing works in here. One even looks more like an emperor than just a general.

02-23-2009, 04:58 PM
d4 is my first time posting on cgsociety, and for the life of me i cant figure out how to post pictures of my general wip without it showing up as a thumnail.

I have been uploading jpg's using the "attach files> manage attachments" link below. is there another way?

02-23-2009, 05:10 PM
Loving the mass post OKMER, thanks for your comment. Still astonished and inspired by all the work flying around in here. Amazing stuff!

... Now if only I could do something that's even in the same book as these images, let alone on the same page!

02-23-2009, 05:14 PM

Unfortunately you can't upload an image as a post insert directly. That's why you're getting the thumbnails. If you want it to show up as an imbedded image, you have to link to it from another hosting locaation (deviantart, imageshack, etc.)

Work blocks some image hosting sites, so I can comment on some of the work here right now. But from what I can see we've got a REALLY strong showing so far.

Teskis - Very original concept. I'm anxious to see where this one goes.

Jamihn - This has a ton of potential, and I can't wait to see the light and color develop.

IK-Po - Great character design.

Jushra - I really like this one. Great drawing skill!

ShogunWarrior - Your WIP series is great. It's always fun to see so many increments in a talented artist's process. I was skeptical of this design originally, but the detail you're putting in makes it work!

Rury - I love this character. I hope you're able to really push the details.

J4Q - The first thing that popped into my head on the top left image (low-angle Doby), was an old WWII propoganda poster. I'd love to see that fleshed out! Great concept.

Nikolay - This is absolutely fantastic. Really. Somehow you've succesfully combined Maxfield Parrish and StarWars. (Don't take that as insult, I love em both!)

BarronImpossible - Far and away the best 'painterly' submission. This is a great piece.

Gatlingg - Holy Crap. Again. The detail you're putting into this is certainly setting the bar (still). This is on it's way to front page plug.

Ajenyon - The light in this along with the aged character is wonderful. Can't wait to see more.

Okmer - This is another one that I was skeptical about originally, but the more you develop it the more I'm sold on it. Great work!

Rawwad - We want updates!

02-23-2009, 05:45 PM
Here's my initial entry, imported a pencil sketch and just started working on it. http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/8476/general1.jpg

02-23-2009, 05:48 PM
Started all over when a friend pointed out that WoW had Walrus-men in it, so figured I'd best do something else. Luckily, I like my new result much better. :D

Loving what I'm seeing, folks! Keep 'em coming!

02-23-2009, 06:03 PM
Moving along!

02-23-2009, 06:09 PM

I tried it, too.
And if you have uploaded an image somewhere, you can upload it by using the "Message"-window when entering a post. There you can not only edit you text but also insert your image by using the icon in the Message-Menu-bar which looks like mountains, yellow coloured. Just inserting html won't work.

02-23-2009, 06:10 PM
thanks, i wasnt sure if having a link to a pic on a different site was breaking any rules.

02-23-2009, 06:15 PM
Giving this thing a try. Progress is pretty rapid and enjoyable right now.

current stage:

Progress in detail:

02-23-2009, 06:18 PM
This will be a rather tight week as I don't even have the upcoming weekend to work on this but what the hey - why not. It's good to have the Wars ongoing again =)

Here's my first rough...

02-23-2009, 06:18 PM
There's already some nice piece of art in this topic, keep up the good work guys!
I had to use a little 3d to help me out with proportion, especially the "musculata" armor.
I'll have to work on the pose and the head looks really ugly the way it is right now, but this wip contains nearly everything you got to know on who General Leonard Law is.

http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/7444/wip1.th.jpg (http://img515.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wip1.jpg)

02-23-2009, 06:20 PM
thanks, i wasnt sure if having a link to a pic on a different site was breaking any rules.

I think, unless it is the final image, it won't break the rules. It's just more like a sketch. If I remember, there is a link on the first page of this thread, which can be used for final cg-submissions. And afterwards one can decide to upload it to the contest.

But ... I am new to this, too. Try and error :D

02-23-2009, 06:22 PM
BluntPencil: yeah , I think this goes in a more interesting direction. Original design. Like it!

DeadInTheAttic: What he's crying at? :)

cylstudio81: Looks interesting, curious bout the next steps.

Okmer: I like the left lighting! I had something like that in mind too. The general in front of a lit table or holomap or something.

Good luck to all of you guys! Keep it coming.

The hands are crap... I guess I need reference for that.
Some more trinkets and bone/tooth thingys will follow.

Shadow Seraph
02-23-2009, 06:55 PM
I just want to say great job to everyone so far. I'm really loving the variety I'm seeing. I'll be putting my own early WIP up here tonight hopefully. I'm going with a seductive yet evil female general, whose responsibility would be leading one of hell's armies in the end of world struggle for souls, hoping to trap the eyes and spirits of men.

02-23-2009, 07:11 PM
Hello, here is my new update.
Vhase : your general is cooool !
Keep it up guys this thread is full of stunning stuff !!!

02-23-2009, 07:15 PM
Blocking in my first colors, but not so happy about it finaly.I'll proberly head for the first lightning.
C & C very welcome

02-23-2009, 07:22 PM
Remko that's soooo awesome ! I love your palette. More more more !!

02-23-2009, 07:29 PM
Okmer, why aren't you happy? I mean, its such a unique design and tight concept already without even the tight details.

Yakonusuke... what a big friggen dude and I love that fur texture so far. Definitely wouldn't want to be on the concubine list at all. :D

02-23-2009, 07:32 PM
progress in today

02-23-2009, 07:37 PM
Last one for today. I've more or less decided on starting all over tomorrow and get a more epic pose and layout, but I like his design. Shall definately be using a good deal of it again.

And @Yakonusuke: I LOVE your guy. :D

02-23-2009, 07:44 PM
[QUOTE=OKMER]Blocking in my first colors, but not so happy about it finaly.I'll proberly head for the first lightning.
C & C very welcome/QUOTE]

I think, the lighting from below would look better according to the steps before.
Some kind of campfire-look an perhaps something like a monitor or display, greenish or something like that.

02-23-2009, 07:59 PM
Some great entries and thanks to everyone for the comments :)

Okmer - nice form but I think light from below might make him more sinister, if that's what you're after. Looking v good though

Nearly done on this. Half an hour tomorrow maybe. No idea what this "team colours" is about so if I've fkd that up then, you know... oh.

02-23-2009, 08:03 PM
Wow, so many to catch up on!

BluntPencil - ace design! I really like the vents and the little powdered wig you snuck in there.

OKMER - Yeah man, your general has a great design. Can't wait to see what you do with the uniform. I really like the scale details on his/its scalp.

NH - Love the light coming off the sash and the giant tattoo of the CS logo.

yakonusuke - Your general cuts an imposing figure! Is his right pinky cut off? OUCH! I'd follow him for fear of getting my ass beat.

Megoru - promissing start.

OnyxAmphiptere - Hope you get a chance to finish.

Vhase - Impressive build up. I like the scales and detailing in the face that's emerging.

splintercannon - His eyes are creeping me out! Gives him a lot of personality even in this early stage.

akhenaten - Looks quite imposing. Can't wait to see how he develops.

DeadInTheAttic - Nice texturing on the fabric. And I like the dramatic eye shading.

marcomaxbonaria - I think he can use some more detailing, especially in his uniform. But I like the little smirk he has.

cylstudio81 - Holy crap! That dude is scary as hell! Want more!

killermachine - I really like the features of his face. He's got a pompous air about him.

Oh my god, there's too many! I'm sorry if I missed anyone, but this thread is growing by the minute. The work here is very inspiring. Makes me want to push mine even further.

02-23-2009, 08:04 PM
BaronImpossible - YES! His expression is just freaking perfect. And I love the technique. Definitely one of my faves so far.

02-23-2009, 08:05 PM
BaronImpossible - Hey Simon, really cool that you joined to the mini challenge. Really nice portrait, very cool expression on your general

BluntPencil - Great uniform for your character. Cheers!!

GaeasHerald - Hey Gerardo my friend! Really original and interesting concept!! like a lot your idea. Cheers!!

02-23-2009, 08:18 PM
ah,see it maybe so later.

it's my begin~

must sleep,tommorow update..

02-23-2009, 08:33 PM
More steps. Final complete color blocking in. May change on certain things...detail shots and more techniques added later.

I like making hexagon grids and overlaying them for different textures. Also, got rid of the scars, added gray hair, torn ear, and hope to make her look more like 50 than 20 eventually during the painting stage.

Thought of making a primary and auxiliary support system for her suit, possibly with an oxygen saturated liquid or some such thing - that and tertiary and complimentary glows are fun. :3

02-23-2009, 09:40 PM
Hey coming along very nicely Gatlingg :bounce: Your plans for the General sound exciting, can't wait to see more.

Just started color now. I need to refine the General more, maybe add some robot bits I mentioned, I'll have a go and post that later on. This is a great way to tackle things you haven't before - fantastic!

02-23-2009, 09:55 PM
Okmer thank you for the advise, i hope i can achieve variety.

The second image is whit his force helm on, but it is just an idea. :)

I change my general for a Samurai general to a Teutonic General. I think It will come out better in the end. Everyone keep up the good work!http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3501/3305055380_e2237e69ef.jpg

02-23-2009, 10:47 PM
Oh, it's already monday and it is pretty late here in the UK.

Ok, I have an idea. I'd really like to make a general that someone would be proud of to follow. Someone risen through the ranks, with so many wounds and cyber replacements that there is not much left of the poor man, but a brilliant mind.

This is my first sketch. I've mostly been working on the face of the character and juggling ideas for the uniform. This design is not what I am looking for and I need to design the uniform to be military and ornate.

I'm going to layer Uniform and high tech and to try to keep the eyes and personality.

Any feedback is most welcome.
Back to work :wip:

02-23-2009, 10:48 PM
Cool stuff everyone, it's so cool to see so many different takes! I myself have made a good stat in pencil this evening,I"ll post it somewhere this week!

02-23-2009, 11:05 PM
Excellent work everyone!
War is brewing and it's exciting to read through this thread :D

BaronImpossible, that is one mean looking general. Excellent work.

Here's my doodle.
As always, I have an idea, but where it will end up, I don't know yet :)

02-23-2009, 11:47 PM
Great updates guys!

and im glad see new generals here)

OKMER> Your idea very great. i love datails.

krishna-fu> Cool speedpaint!

02-23-2009, 11:51 PM
:wavey:Hello everybody ! Here's my first post for DW. I'm looking forward for some feedback. So far it's just a sketch, I'm just experimenting with a barbarian looking like general, please feel free to coment.

02-23-2009, 11:59 PM
Ok, I'll try to follow and participate to this contest... Unless I'm quite busy for now...
This would be a kind of woman cossacks general...

So, here is the first step, base drawing and rough colors (and I'm sorry, I can't give a lot of infos because my english is quite bad :( )

And cool works on here !

Gatlingg: Wow, those are some unexpected colors! loving it!

Ferx: Fernando, todo viento? Extending your canvas was a step in the right direction man, really allows you to add more detail and expresion. good job.

VHASE: very, very cool mate. Cheers.

General Okmer Tsoort: Sir, yes, sir! Yep, I was going for underdeveloped arms in one of the demon-halves, but that went horribly wrong..... Hope this is better:

....still gotta add the map ..... ....and skull..... .....and textures....
OMG, I'm never gonna finish in time

Comments and crits are definety welcomed!

Everybody's stuff is looking awesome so far! Looking forward to next week to see what comes out of it. Keep it up folks!

On that note - a quick colour rough before I head out for the eve.

I've already identified a good number of things that need to be tweaked or altered already, so will see where the next couple of days take me. I'm still fairly new to the whole painting thing so additional comments or suggestions are appreciated.

02-24-2009, 02:27 AM
I had to start over as I was beginning to loath my work. I was happy with the drawing but by using selections for each part of the picture made it look very bland. So I've started again with just the drawing, adding black and white to see where I can go with it.

He currently has a spartan warrior mask on one side so for the time being I've called him General Sotiria. Sotiria means "saviour" in greek.

I'd still like to use some purples and blues to give him a regal look. That would allow the reds and greys in the CGsociety logo to stand out. I've also gone in and started detailing the face.
I would love to hear what people think so far.

02-24-2009, 04:19 AM
a few people have tried to help me do this but im still lost. I have uploaded my art to deviant art, but after i click the insert "image button" what link should i put to view my image?

http://tedskis.deviantart.com/art/DOMINANCE-WAR-WIP-113947097 is the address to my picture on deviantart but when i put this in the field nothing shows up when i post.

02-24-2009, 05:18 AM

if it helps, here's how to work around it using a Photobucket account:

A: create a Photobucket account (http://photobucket.com/), it's free!
B: upload your image to your Photobucket gallery.
C: if you place the cursor over an image in the gallery of yours, 4 addresses will appear (Email&IM; Direct Link; HTML Code, and IMG code). Copy the "Direck link" address.

D: when you are posting here on CGS, click on the yellowish box that looks like a postcard, right under the "copy/paste" symbols. Once you click on that box, a window should appear. Paste the "Direct link" address there.

E: voilá. It's done!

I guess other services work just as well, but this is the one I'm familiar with.
Hope it helps and best of luck!:wavey:

I'm rather fond of how the teeth came out.

Oh, and STELLAR work coming out of everyone else! (God, I hope mine turns out half as good as some of these others!)

The Death Ritual begins

Hi everyone, a lot of good looking generals around here. My shout out goes to everyone who has participated in this event.. I am lucky to be a part of this fine team.. Here are some of my updates on my Commander or General..

Here i'm showing example of how to use the pen tool. I wanted the pendant to look as real as possible. In order to do this I used the pen tool to creat borders within the lines. I then colored the inside lines with orange, brown, yellow and white. Here is an example...

Then for the inside, i used photoshop, Filter-artistic-sponge. To get this nice gold nugget in the middle.

Then here i used the pen tool again to create this alien symbol and then darken the sides with brown and highlighted the outer edges with yellow and white. This came out pretty good and it looks real. I really like this pendant...For the rest of the armor I will use the pen tool. If you guys wanna make things look real and remove any perfections use the pen tool.. You can create wonders...glta...

This is the almost final result of the pendant.. Looks nice uh? hehehe...

02-24-2009, 05:36 AM

my first post on cg society and my first dominance war entry...

still very rough, but I think I have the concept down...
I was originally inspired by the creatures from "shadow of the colossus"..I thought about having the general as this massive creature to which a whole city is built upon...nations war against eachother quite literally having these creatures aiding them as battlestations/frontline in battles.

02-24-2009, 05:47 AM
AcerB, your wip looks awesome! o_o

Quick question: How do you make a final submission?

I'm not done yet, but I was clicking around in the OP post and the first link goes to game artisan, and then 2nd link, I don't see a submit button?

Also, Sorry if this is a noob question... but we're on the cgsociety team right? or... I'm confused.

02-24-2009, 06:12 AM
Starting to block in some color.

Hi all, I'm very excited about this comp. can't wait to get home every day to work some more on my general. here is a W.I.P. good luck to all.

02-24-2009, 09:31 AM
Also, creepy as shiz, Tedskis, creepy as shizzz XD I like how her head is breaking apart and floating off :D

LOL come to the dark side, Toastage.... :buttrock: I read on the DW feature that they were thinking it would be interesting to see how 'forum loyalty' shifted this time around, given that so many more forums were joining the fray. So glad i joined this time around, this has been the best fun, and great for learning new skills. Just seeing what you guys come up with blows my mind. Go team CG

02-24-2009, 10:03 AM
Decided to make him a bit more sinister.

Update 03:

Still need stronger highlights on the metal so it reads as metal. Feedback is more than welcome.

02-24-2009, 10:04 AM
So here's my illustration, time to paint!

02-24-2009, 10:32 AM

1st coloring pass.
Did an overlay of color and a lot of paint over.
Change the design so he looks more like a general and less than a king or emperor.
C and C welcome.

BadgerPirate; that's fun. Would be cool if you dig the concept
Toastage, cylstudio81: really nice lighting and mood.
Jaminh , Okmer thats turning real nice.
Ejc: ahah nice expression
Derrick Song: Nice color and design looking forward to see more.
Nikolay. I really like the smooth rendering you did.
AcerB: Nice and creepy
Stuff are getting more and more exciting here!

02-24-2009, 10:34 AM
Wow, this develops to become some kind of a main contest.
Here again a step of commander Vorian Atreides.
I got an idea for another general, based on this one, which I will post the next time.
And by the way, he's screaming commands (perhaps I should at a certain background like a spacebattle oder a tactical monitoring system).

02-24-2009, 10:46 AM
Wow ! Things going fine on here !

Small update for my general :

02-24-2009, 11:01 AM
Well here’s some feedback on the great work I’m seeing all over the forum. You guys put my work to shame

Reklas: Seeing your original design, the creature was the most interesting part as it was really original in the way it looked. Now but covering it up it’s really loosing its identity. It needs to be more ornate as there is a lack of military elements, like medals, sashes, stars. The armour to me seems a bit too functional and ready for battle.

Rawwad: Love your design for your general. The lighting defiantly makes it look great. When can we see more posts?

Gatlingg: Hey! It is great to see one of the few female generals on the forum. I absolutely love the colour and the look and everything is working great. Maybe she is a bit too on the center of the page, in my opinion, maybe lowering her on the page could make for a better composition.

Nikolay: This is definitely my favourite piece. You have a great charcter a bit of a mixture between a general and a bishop. But the military side stands out. Awsome work.

 To all other guys in DW.

02-24-2009, 11:04 AM
More details.

http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/283/generalportrait02.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

02-24-2009, 11:30 AM
yessai, amazing stuff popping up from all over the place! So cool!!
AcerB, Ferx buddies, happy to see you around!:-)
Tryng to aim for a more dynamic lightning and started blocking out some formes on the suit.
I'll try to work the underwater feeling more out later on.
Still hesitating with this more punky background color:
Whatta ya think?, C & C very welcom

02-24-2009, 11:52 AM
Whatta ya think?, C & C very welcom

I think it's a brilliant piece of design. The only things I'm struggling with are the stars on the 'skull' and the fin detail on top. Neither seem to fit right with the contours of their bases. Love it though, good work Okmer.

02-24-2009, 11:53 AM
Cool character Remko.

I like the blue better than the yellow.
Maybe you could try to add more greenish in the background, if you want to play with the colour.

I did some spying :D on the CGHub forum, some cool stuff there. Check it out (http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=638&page=3)

02-24-2009, 11:59 AM
OKMER - Hmm tough call, I think the bluer background fits in with the mood of your pallet, but on the other hand you don't want him 'disappearing' too much.

Remton - She's looking very nice, love the hat, but her eye looks a bit too big? Unless that's what you were going for XD It gives her more of a cartoony feel, is all, not a bad thing though :D

02-24-2009, 12:21 PM
NavigatorJones - Thanks for the feedback, I will fix the eye to a more realistic render ( I'll try BTW ...)

Okmer - I prefer the blue background too. Nice design

02-24-2009, 12:28 PM
Hello again ! I see a lot of cool stuff posted so far, can't wait to see the finals.
Donno what happened to my image. I try again:

<a href="http://s723.photobucket.com/albums/ww233/jsac_ro/?action=view&current=prezentare.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww233/jsac_ro/prezentare.jpg" border="0" alt="prezentare"></a>

I hope it works ! :wavey:

02-24-2009, 12:32 PM
DoomedSeraph:Thx man, yep, still not convinced by the fins & stars neither...

Art2: Hey Marlon man, nice to see you in! thx.yeah, you're right, definitly going to try to add some more greenish touches.

NavigatorJones: thx man.yeh, great point.I'll maybe try to desaturate or lighten it up a bit more later on.

02-24-2009, 01:13 PM
Okmer, I actually dig the stars! It looks bad ass, original, and makes it more convincing (as far as a war general). Not sure about the fin though, I'd modify it to short spikes and take the fin out (just an idea). The blue background is cool.

02-24-2009, 01:26 PM
thx for comments, guys.
new progress. I'm add background like a curtains

comments and critics ever welcome.

or try

02-24-2009, 01:27 PM
Okmer thanks for the kind words...
the one you just did is really great!! I love it !!!

AcerB, nice de te voir ici man.
