View Full Version : Car Chase (version 1) plz critique

02 February 2009, 04:37 AM
Hello everybody. This is one of my side project I'm working on. The car is going to explode at the end and water is going to be squirting out of the hydrant. Sorry for the horrible quality.

Please can you give a critique???
Thanks for watching and enjoy

This looks great, man! :D Only thing I have to say, is that I can't see who he killed in the car :P Hehe... And did he jump trough the roof of the car?

But other then that: Great work! :applause:

Yeah sorry the quality is horrible. There's no one in the car right now but he's going to be stabbing his claws threw the seat. And yes he's punching and jumping threw the car roof.

Hey man, fun idea. Some feedback:

-the car is going really different speeds from clip to clip. I would unify this by making the first clip faster
-the mometuem is lost in the first clip due to changing directions so much (in the character and the car). I'd have him running much faster at the start, jump right onto the pole, swing around the base (in Y) so his body is parrell with the ground, then as the car whips around, he finishes his swing and flings into the cars window.
-the car needs a much larger arc in that first shot, if it was going that slowly, it couldnt make a 90 degree turn
-overall that first clip could be twice as fast and still read
-shot more cinematic in your aspect ratio, try 16:9
-the three cuts in the middle seems blocky and generic, I'd work on the timing on those. Remember, some close up shots, some far away. You have 3 mid shots in a row
-the last clip of him standing, he could just land in a bad ass pose and not have to stand up. Also, you could cut this shorter by having a back view of the guy in the foreground and the explosion in the bg, sintead of having two cuts.

A similar anim idea was done by Tyson Ibele, you might be able to pull some timing / camera refs from this. It's pretty sweet:

WOW!! His was crazy!! I doubt I'll be able to top his but I am trying to get to that quality of work. His just made mines look like a pile of poop!

I like your ideas. I'm going to try out the spin around the pole in Y. I'm going to keep the version I have now too just for comparison purposes though. If i was to erase all of that I think I'll be sick for a week.

It's funny how you said to cut out the last cut and just have him land with the car behind him. Somebody else on said the same thing. The only difference was that he suggested something like the dude landing facing the camera, with the car in the background, and then the explosion. I'm going to put the two ideas together plus probably add a little something more in there and see how it turns out.

Thanks again for taking the time to critique my work. Im going to get started on fixing my errors and try to get an update up within the next two to three days.

In the mean time more critiques will highly be appreciated

A picture is worth a thousand words, so heres many pictures in Movie format:

I would slow down on animating the character until you get the flow of the whole scene blocked out and timed. Try using cubes and basic objects. This way, you don't become attached to possible throw away work.

A few other notes:

-Swing the car wide and peeling out
-Really sell the impact of the character's inertia hitting the vehicle
-16:9 video format
-A lower, more personal camera, with a single arc instead of turns
-overall a short animation, but still getting the point across.

My two cents

My first thought is it needs motion blur, otherwise it looks legit.

Hi all i'm new to this forum.

@ ajfrank.

hey nice animation man!

The character model is nice. Which plugin did u used to animate the car ? Craft Director ? or vehicle studio?

Can i suggest u something?
Craft Director is a plugin that is very easy to understand and u can do awesome camera movements + car animations in minutes. Just try it.

Thanks. I'm only credited for the animation.

I didn't use any plugins for this animation. I've heard of Craft Director and I've downloaded a trial version of it but I had no clue how to use it. I would like to learn someday how to use it though
