A new picture by me.
Not too advanced, and I know some tweaking would be in order.
It make me happy seein' those little critters anyways :)

hi Tudor,
what i dont like about cgtalk is alot of peoples art goes unnoticed. that is great great character, reminds me of soemthign i might see in THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. I just wanted to say great character i like that alot.

07-01-2003, 10:04 AM
@levi: youre absolutely right! :wip:

@tudor: never seen such good expressions without having any details - even your simple creepy creatures got so much of expressions! congrats!

i like the blue one hit by the purple one the most *lol* :applause:

07-01-2003, 10:13 AM
LOL!! Very cute and expressive little characters!!! I'd love to see animation with them!!

07-01-2003, 10:16 AM
Hehe!! There are so funny, Love their expression, An animation with them would be excellent as has said diazgl :)

07-01-2003, 10:17 AM
animation like this? :)

07-01-2003, 10:32 AM
tudor great animations, are you using softbodies on the antennas?

07-01-2003, 11:14 AM
No soft bodies.. regular animation.

07-01-2003, 02:55 PM
A little gift to the Maya community..
The object plus rig.
No morph targets though I am afraid.
(Original Lightwave version later)

07-01-2003, 03:13 PM
Really cool, I dig the character design.
In the first Testrun, you've achieved a great runcycle.
He seems to levitate when he walks away on the second, however... But the timing is good, and that's more relevant.

Would be cool to see an animation of your first image there ... :scream:

Keep it up,

Check this out...

07-01-2003, 07:34 PM
Ouch! An animation of that would be hard, but I have thought about it :)

Well.. Here it is. The original LW scene file. Character+rig (and built in morph targets ofcourse)

I love it! I laughed out loud when I first saw it, but my screen had cut half of it off.

Then I scrolled over, and laughed out loud again. Maybe I'm just easily amused, but awesome!

07-02-2003, 05:20 PM
Regarding the picture, the emotions are portrayed very well with the exception of the one getting stepped on in my opinion. I mean his heads being practically crushed and he doesn't look to be in pain at all. Also, a different color for the tounge would be better to show more contrast, and would help on teh emotion of some of them, like on the watermelon one, it just belnds in too much really to see without examining.

07-02-2003, 05:28 PM

Great pic!

Nice feeling of flow/motion!

Best regards

07-02-2003, 07:32 PM
I´m not so happy today (stressed) but this made me laugh!
Nice work, and cool design!

07-02-2003, 07:42 PM
Cool characters, however, runtest2 needs a bit of work. When he jumps up to turn he lands too slow and without weight. The run also lacks weight. It almost looks like a duck swimming because there is no recoil in the steps. Even light characters need to sink down as the leg takes on the weight of the body.

The other run looks a bit better but it needs more up and down too.

Keep going, dude.

07-02-2003, 08:29 PM
I Like the image very is reminding me of ICE AGE the scene with all the dodo's :)

I am gonna download the animations right after this post but I expect them to be very good :)

07-02-2003, 08:37 PM
Thank you all :)

The Image was actually made for a cartoon character competition at a swedish 3d forum. 4 hours before deadline I only had one character finished. 2 hour vertexpaintingm posing and rendering later I had the picture done. I hoped noone would notice the colour of the tongue, but you did you bastards ;)

The animations were just a test to see if the character could be animated.. If not, I would have dropped the design and started over. They need a lot of work, I know :/

07-02-2003, 08:41 PM
Still it's a very nice pic, lots of humor in the interactions. May be a still, but feels very animated.

07-02-2003, 08:49 PM
Those are really cute. Like the one with the watermelon most, color is nice - I think the other one's color are a little to vibrant, they don't look as organic as the one most to the right.
But again: really cute.

07-02-2003, 08:53 PM
funny little critters fighting over a water melon:p , so simple yet full of life. nice work on the expressions, and the colors make them so cute

and watching the animation made my day

07-03-2003, 10:54 PM
Great work Tudor :) I love the simplicity of your design and execution, and they still have so much character.

Thanks for sharing the files too :)

07-03-2003, 11:47 PM
do you make an animation with them?:buttrock:

07-04-2003, 01:17 AM
i also love how u made a relatively simple model yet gave it such character. Personally, i think that this is one of the hardest things to do in CG, give the models characyer, especially when theyre less detailed like this one

very awesome! Love the style and the pic made me laugh!

07-04-2003, 05:44 AM
My new desktop! I bet it's going to be there for a long time! I love it!

07-04-2003, 06:32 AM
Very cute design, anyway will u animate it!? :applause:

07-04-2003, 07:46 AM
Thank you all! :)

More and more ppl are asking for me to animate that picture..
Well. I have my vaccation coming up, and if I don't get any extra work during that time I might do it..

It is kinda scary to animate something like that though, as there are so many factors to think about. It would have to be straigh ahead animation, which I havent done in quite a while now.

07-04-2003, 08:09 AM
I love your character ! great colo, great poses ! :applause:

07-04-2003, 08:11 AM
LOL funny... teletubies ? oO

07-04-2003, 10:18 AM
Very very cool design, and posing!

Like someone here wrote, some people here get un-noticed..
I think that mostly cartoon stuff, is forgotten around this forum..

alot of the stuff here, is more realistic oriented, or
fantasy/realistic. Dont get me wrong, some of the works here
are purely amazing!, but somehow the cartoony stuff
sometimes get negelcted..

How about a forum ? :) hehe

anyway, those little creatures are super cute! the animation
is very funny (I agree the first sequence, run at the end,
needs some more work) but I really love your style!

how about an XSI version of those babies?? :)

07-04-2003, 10:27 AM
Very good work, man.

Great design... strong posing and very original concept.
I´d love to see them in motion. Pleeeeeaaseeeeee...

07-04-2003, 11:05 AM
:applause: Love this picture, love the characters. I think the thing I like MOST is the blue one getting his head crushed. It says to me that these little dudes are so stupid and happy they don't even register pain or care if they get their antennaes pulled. Fantastic.:applause:

07-04-2003, 02:05 PM
very funny picture and animation..You can look at the first picture for quite a while taking in all the emotion of each character at a time...very kewl

07-04-2003, 10:19 PM
hi, if there is ANYone who could PLEASE tell me how to go about animating similar characters in 3ds max, i would REALLY appriciate it.

i know the basic stuff, what i dont' get is:

the mohawk thingy on the head, do you animate EVERY single movement they make, or is there a way ?

also, if my character is somewhat fat, how do i control the stomac the way i want to.

tnx alot

07-05-2003, 12:12 AM
looks fantastik man. 4 stars for you
You have a nice sense of humor

07-05-2003, 12:55 AM

top character designing. very potential for a funny anim.
you could improve their appearance with different shading, maybe sss?

oh and big thanks for sharing.

07-05-2003, 03:09 AM
LOL, absolutely love it. The red guy really want's it badly :D
expressions and poses are really well done.

07-05-2003, 03:49 AM
awesome! hehe I'm diggin' that watermellon

07-08-2003, 09:26 AM
 funny!

07-08-2003, 10:41 AM
This is sooo good! We want wires!!! We want an animation!
They are sooo cute! I love it!

Ett skitbra arbete! Om du har tid och får de animerad kan det bli väldigt coolt!

07-08-2003, 10:54 AM
Hey Tudor...

I love those guys....

I was curious how you animated it?

Was it in Maya, or Lightwave?

07-08-2003, 11:32 AM
yep.. I animate the mohawk by hand.. Not too hard actually.
And about max.. I don't know that program I am afraid :/

Great stuff man.

Thanks a bunch for letting me play with the little guy. :)

I realize now that I have a lot to learn about rigging.

Facial Deluxe
08-19-2003, 07:17 PM
Totally missed this one !
Not only you're the king of rigs, bit also ypu're an awesome modeler and animator :surprised

Killer killer killer work, would have be me, I would have put this front page...

08-19-2003, 07:45 PM
Wow, amazing! Stylish, yet simple. Looks really alive.

This is going straight to my desktop.

Please animate this.

Wow, it's amazing how I have nothing new to say.

08-19-2003, 08:03 PM
super fun characters! hilarious poses. really nice work, I hope to see more animation of these little critters

08-19-2003, 08:21 PM

I thought this thread was dead long ago :)

I am still pondering wheather to do an animation of these little critters or not.. When I have time. Between my job and all those extra litte jobs that always pop up.

And facial deluxe.. I was on the front page :)

08-20-2003, 03:52 PM
Hi Tudor,
I thought I'd have a shot animating one of these little guys and here's what I came up with in a couple of hours tonight. Hope you like it :D

420kb Quicktime (

120KB Quicktime (

08-20-2003, 04:58 PM
Cool anim Fasty, great sense o' weight. These characters still rock btw (saw em a while ago).

08-20-2003, 06:55 PM
U are inspired by Ice Age aren`t you? I like the same scene too:)

08-20-2003, 09:20 PM
I like it! :D

08-20-2003, 11:13 PM
Really fun pic! The anims are okay...others' comments have pretty much covered the issues with them. And I agree that it makes a fun desktop image...especially spread across two monitors. Proportions are just right! :)

08-21-2003, 07:00 AM
WOw ,Nice work:applause:

08-21-2003, 07:00 AM
i just like the color.

10-15-2003, 11:12 AM
Little dude is sooo cool! I gotta play with this oh man.

10-15-2003, 02:45 PM
just fantastic....

10-15-2003, 03:42 PM
that is such a nice character. the picture is awesome, warmed my sub-zero heart :D. Nice anim fasty...

10-15-2003, 03:51 PM
Marvellous stuff :D

I kept staring at the pic and just kept grinning until the top of my head fell off.

.. Then I set it as my wallpaper.

Such simplicity with so lively expressions is a rare sight! Don't do just an animation, do a short movie of these guys fighting each other for that watermelon.

Whatever it is that drives you to do stuff like this, hold on to it :D

10-15-2003, 04:18 PM
good job man i love your work its simple and nice ..

10-15-2003, 04:21 PM
simplistic yet awesome.great work.:applause:

10-15-2003, 05:30 PM
WOW, that first image is G-R-E-A-T! love the three ones in the middle, they're sooooo funny

I agree all the way with spikey! its so rare to see things like this one, great quality!!

And thanks for sharing the files!, i just wanna play with this fella :D

10-15-2003, 05:43 PM
Well, what can I add after 5 pages of good comments.

First reaction was a smile, then the laugh became more and more obvious as I scrolled to the right?

The guy holding the watermelon has such an expression! I love it. :D

What about a wallpaper where he poses, facing the camera, one foot on the watermelon, proud to have escaped the others? (and maybe add all the others jumping on him behind his back.

Well, I might be asking too much but it would be great! :applause:

10-15-2003, 07:02 PM
Veeeeeeery nice work. the character is amazing strong with simple look !

And the animation of " Fasty " is great !!!

Facial Deluxe
10-15-2003, 07:13 PM
Excellent anim Fasty

10-15-2003, 08:21 PM
I love the run cycle (animation 2) just so full of character, lol, it's great. I like the way the grubbo with the watermelon wasn't on my monitor until i scrolled over, quite awesome to see it that way: "why are they messing each other up? ...oh, LOL!"

10-15-2003, 08:30 PM
This rocks! It seems very orginal. Love the care free mood it sets. I can see a whole TV series come out of those characters. I think you hit the animation right on the head. Good work.

10-15-2003, 08:36 PM

great simplicity !!!

powerful design.....

...waiting for animations!!:applause:

10-15-2003, 09:25 PM
Wow! I thought this thread was dead long ago..
Glad to see that it is still live and kicking!
I am afraid that I haven't even touched this little critter in months now..
Inspired by you, and a bit by I am working on a small animation now though. Not sure if it will ever be finished, but it fun working on it :)

10-15-2003, 09:31 PM

10-15-2003, 09:41 PM
Ah.. shit.. Corrupted file.. Damn LW's motionmixer!
Might just have to redo the whole walkcycle now :(

10-15-2003, 09:42 PM

no prob man!

10-16-2003, 02:25 AM
Interesting design, any clips here? :D

10-16-2003, 02:35 AM
Heyy...cute lil characters, nice and easily appealing...this threads been hiding in the dark...Yep...lots of peoples work goes kinda un noticed here..unless there be lots o stars at the thread vote....;P Cheers man...

10-16-2003, 05:38 AM
So glad to have discovered this! Your characters are so simple but VERY well designed, perfectly expressing their silly, carefree, single-mindedness to get the watermelon! I LOVE IT!

I can't wait to get back to the lab to try out your rigging. I can probably learn a thing or two!

10-16-2003, 07:03 AM
great work man!!
very nice character
