Like Nanogator said, select the Ball tool (b key), then bring up the Numeric Panel (n key).

Set the Type to Tesselation, with no more than 3 Segments.

Lasso select the sphere. Bring up the Bevel tool (b key), and bevel
the side in (inset) with NO shift.

Then bevel with a negative shift (so the polys go inward.

Then bevel again with more inset and no shift.

Delete the highlighted polys.

Oh, and during the last inset of the bevel, do a negative inset, so the polys stretch instead of shrink.

Damn, I just realized this was supposed to be a reply to a thread about modeling a tesselated sphere object. It wasn't supposed to be not a new thread. Sorry, folks.
