View Full Version : Knee pad rig questions

I'm in the process of rigging a character with knee pads and wondering if anyone has had any success with it before.

I've tried a couple of different ways already. In these images the kneepad and upper strap are parented to a knee bone that follows the rotation of the upper leg bone. While the lower strap is just using a weight map from the lower leg. I'm thinking that I will need a combination of the two; weight maps and parenting. So while I mess around with these I wonder if anyone else might have some ideas. -Thanks

I avoid this problem by modeling my knee pads as part of the leg mesh. As long as that knee pad is a seperate parented mesh at a joint you are going to have that problem with the leg bands. You might want to think about making a morph that brings the leg bands back out.

I also favor letting the bones just deform it.
You can also make a small bone for the tip of the knee.
Use an expression to keep it halfway between the thigh and shin bone. Parent the kneepad to that.
