View Full Version : Whee fan art

Taking a break from serious stuff! Here's some fanart I've started.
He's supposed to be this kid: http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j74/BruK_Smash/Soren.jpg
...But, you know how it goes with translating comic/anime characters into realistic style. 'Resemblance' is flirted with but if you go all the way, you end up with freakish giant-eyed monsters (can you tell I don't like babies?).
He's supposed to look like a youthful teenager, and eye-rollingly exasperated. I'm trying to get away from my habit of always having dramatic!lighting, so I'd like for this to look like ordinary, diffuse daylight.
All critique is welcome. I could especially use help on keeping my values in good order.

To keep your values in order, you first have to clearly define where they are coming from...
You have two flashlights shining one on each cheek, and a larger flashlight shining on the back of the hand, with a horizontal glow behind the shoulders...Why the rest of the image is so dark is beyond me...Skin is much more refractive than you are drawing it.
The expression looks more bored than exasperated. Not enough stress in the brow and lips to show frustration.

Thank you as always! I, er...hrmm. I was GOING for "it's a bit cloudy at three o'clock on a summer day, he's in a room with plenty of windows, and the sun is in front of and above him but there isn't a window directly between him and it" (way to be overly specific? >.> ). Do I need to just...lighten up the values pretty much all over? I always worry about making the picture look flat...
I'll mess around with his expression a bit to add more irritation, but 'bored' is probably fine with me in a pinch.
Edit: Better? Worse? Not far enough? I don't know what was up with that shoulder glow thing, I think that was a 2 AM "God, go to bed already" addition.

It's kind of muddy looking, overall. Even for a kind of overcast day at 3 PM, with him standing in an interior room, facing a closet... ;)
VALUES are your FRIEND. Be a bit more bold.
EDIT: I hate the eye I painted on the LH side. Thankfully it's YOUR work. YOU fix it. I'd just paint a sharp stick in it, if it were me...

I'll get back to work.
Before-bed progress report! I'm not very happy with his eyes, especially his left (our right), but I'll muck about with them more after I've slept. Belatedly realized that I'd forgotten his sleeve and needed to make his hair a bit longer in front. Soren needs a serious haircut.

'Nother progress report!
I need to straighten up the bottom of his cloak-thing and detail the ends of his hair, but then I'll move on to color. Is there anything I need to change beforehand? It is not too late for me to change stuff!

Tone down that bright spotlight shining on the sleeve cuff by the hand (consistency, Miss Pixie!) and I think you're good to go.

Thank you! Fixed.
I'm gonna call this one done. I'm not totally happy with it (I HATE how the thing on his forehead turned out, but every time I messed with it it looked even worse), but it's just fan art, and I have a four day limit on how long I'm willing to work on fan projects.
I'm still getting a handle on adding colors after values, but I think it came out better this time than last time. If anyone has any comments for things I should keep in mind for next time, that would be nice, but otherwise, thank you CG for all your help and I will see you around. =D

I'd look pretty unhappy, too, with that painful looking brand in the middle of my forehead...lol!
Not bad, Trenchcoat. I particularly like the cape edging. Good blending on the colors, nice improvement (for this round) with the values.
See ya around for the next one, keep painting!

Ha--it's actually referred to as a Brand in the game. Normally people depict it like it was just painted on, but when I hear 'brand' I think, you know. Sizzle.
As usual your praise makes me giddy. Time to go hop around excitedly for a while.

Maybe more highlights in the hair to give some volume, and the mouth's alignment compared to the head is a bit off. Otherwise this is a good piece that will lead to improvement in the future, keep it up!:D

Thank you very much! I definitely agree about the hair--something to improve on for next time. =D
