View Full Version : Knee and elbow lock

I donīt really get the concept behind the elbow and knee lock?
If someone could explain it I would probably get it, donīt need a full tutorial

My main question:
Is the system still in IK? With locked translate and rotate on the joint? Or is it a separate chain?

It is still in the IK system. Used with the poleVector as the object to lock to. The only way i know how to set it up involves setting the child tx to the distance of the polevector.

Yup...assuming the joints are oriented to XYZ (X pointing down to the next joint), you just have the distance from the shoulder to the locator become the TX of the lower arm, and the distance from the wrist to the locator become the TX of the wrist joint... When both are set to those lengths, the are is "pinned" into that position. Make sense?

oops... should have specified that.

I have seen this method locking the elbow in polevector position. I prefer using a separate hierarchy which locks th elbow where ever u need and snap it aswell. makes it easier for the animators.
