What is the best way to put clothes on a model in Maya.

I've been using Maya for about 2 years now and have only recently gotten into character rigging and animation.

I'm trying to find the best way to add clothing to a character.

Do I need to combine the geometry before binding a skeleton?

Painting weight maps is a pain in the (xxx).

What's the best way to add clothing and get good deformations?

Thanks all in advance!!

What version of Maya are you using? In Maya 200x, you can add as many new meshes as you'd like to a skeleton and copy skin weights from one mesh to the other, regardless of topology or UVs.

Skin>Edit smooth skin>Copy Skin Weights.

Hey jdtiX..

Your awesome. Got it!! Coping the weight maps worked like a charm.

Using 2009 now.

Hey if I have a figure and want to take the weights from one complete figure to another with the same mesh... what's the best way to do that?

Eporting the weight maps doesn't seem to work. I'm sure it's user error, I'm now to the character animation scene.

Thanks in Advance!! And thanks for the weight maps copy tip!

LOL make sure to write this down... :p

Copy skin weights.

You can copy skin weights to meshes from two different rigs.
Just scale the bones of the mesh of the character you're copying from to match the mesh you're copying to, and "copy skin weights." Since it's the same mesh, all the better. :)

Glad to be able to help. :)
