View Full Version : Vortex (water) with particles

11 November 2008, 12:06 PM
Hello everbody,

since a few days I'm trying to make a vortex in 3ds max with particles conected with the Space Warp "Vortex" which have to look like a Water-Vortex, but I don't get an aspect which looks like water moving very fast.

I like to put a camera into the vortex, that you have the sensation being into it.

Is there anybody who has an idea how I can get this effect?
The final result could be something like that Fotoreference (

Waiting and hoping for some help ... Katharina!

Depending how much detail you looking for, particles may not be the esiest solution. You could for exemple model the vortex shape and the use noise, twist, displacement, etc to get the effect. On top of that u could then use particles to create extra detail.
I think Pete Draper had a vortex scene on his new book,

agreed with grury, it's probably more of a modeling effect than to be tackled just with particles. Really depends on the scale of what your thinking of - but if your thinking of a big one then yes, particles would play a major roll, but it would be a combination of both.

Thanks a lot chicos for your answers. I did what you advised me and now with the cylinder in form of a vortex, the adequate light and the noise in the correct size it looks quite like water which moving fast. And now I will add some some particles in form of bubbles to make it a little bit interesting.

Thanks a lot again for your answers and have a nice day :wavey:
