View Full Version : Steam Golem Prod. - Hero's Legend - Short

11 November 2008, 02:39 PM

Hello everyone, So I am posting this now with updates to come. Steam Golem Productions is a small privately owned company that has been started to bring a new style of animation to theaters and TV. We are looking to start off with our very first short to pitch for funding for a full time studio. The Short is Called "A Hero's Legend" It is a fantasy based short with Steam Punk style influences. I had to laugh because of the competition that just came out on CGTALK for the steam punk art. The idea is to put together a movie that is not only for adults but for Children alike. But mostly for the adults, if there is one thing the theaters are lacking it is a good fantasy movie with an intense story line. This is a 6 month project, we are looking to put together a trailer for the movie to come.

We do have a producer in Hollywood that is following our progress and is very interested in the production, We just need enough work to put together a good product to pitch. Right now this is non-paying but a great opportunity for portfolio work. I am however offering back pay to anyone that can stick around for the 6 months and do work the whole time.

Okay Now to the Guts we are in mid production of the concept art and are starting to recruit 3d artist to start to work on what we need for the 15 minute short Below are a list of the positions still open:

2D Environmental Artist
3D Character Artist
Environmental Artist
Lighting Technician
Render Technician
Post Production Technician
Coffee Boy

If you have any interest in these positions please email to, Now onto the good stuff Concept work for the short, or you can stop by the forums (

Actually I use Maya for making it,so I pose the models and make like a Action Storyboard with all the explanations and key poses and pass it to animators so that they can work by it.

Okay here is another update on the Ogre for everyone, first the finished copy of him, and then a quick scratch texture on him, hopefully next post will be the finished textures on the Ogre, and some test animations,

and now the textures,

Hey everyone thank you for your posts and all the people that have joined up, but we are looking for a Key Frame artist to come on and produce out some intense art for the company, we are looking for imaginative and also well versed in human anatomy and can also draw beasts quite well.

Thank you for taking the time to read if you wish to apply please post on our forums Click Here (

So here is our first animation test for your eyes, The Ogre is almost on final texture but we would like to know what you all think of him walking around, Right Click image save as... (

Nice work guys, you've come a long way.

A few observations.

textures- could be a bit more varied...kinda monochromatic right now...maybe some red browns for the spots at least??

Walk cycle-
The shoulder horns? look like they are weighted/parented incorrectly?...they look like they're moving around through the skin surface.

some odd looking pinching in the chest arm pit area...might need to add hold bones or adjust weights?

I like the arm swing a lot, but the wrist joint bend and fingers looks a bit too rubbery?

Head motion with the chin forward looks good and convincing!

Legs and feet need work...looks a bit mechanical right now.

12 December 2008, 09:40 AM
So what you guys going to work on next.

As far as the comments Softdistortion made, I agree with the shoulder horns.

The texture colour range is okay but I do understand what "SD" is saying
may need a bit more specular variation so the skin looks a bit more moist.

I know the animation is just a test.. It think that his legs look
mechanical because his hips are not moving / rotating side to side very much
if at all.

Over all it looks really good and I'm sure is good enough to tell a story with.

12 December 2008, 10:18 AM
Nice work

Have to agree with SD and Omar for the walk cycle,
his upperbody motion is nice, follow through in the arms is sweet could maybe use a bit more dragging when the arm comes back up in the wrist, just have it bend back a bit more, it might look like you break his joints but it will imporve the overall look

Have to agre eon the legs, they look very stiff still, the legs seem to be bend the whole time make it look like he isnt using his knees that much, might be the angle at which we look at his walk, but it doenst feel like he is really stepping, maybe keep one of his feet down on the ground while he is moving his leg up and bending the feet and the tows will make it look like his feet are coming from the ground, right now they look like they are almost right away from the ground and most of the time in a 90 degree angle, but he is big and heavy and not so agile so I think his feet shouldnt come up that high and I think the COG should move up and down more giving it more a sense of weight on the impact when he walks :) think that is the main thing missing the sense of weight which I think for such a character is very important? hope this is usefull and that i dont sound to harsh :). would be awesome if you could make his belly wiggle on the landing of his feet, would look naturally if we look at the softness of his body in the shoulders when he rotates ^^

keep it going

that's a sick looking model, but the walk anim needs a lot of work.
do you guys use Maya or Max?

12 December 2008, 05:22 PM
At the moment we are using both programs to do animation. But that animation was done in 3d studio max 100%. They animation is being tuned up as we speak plus we are also putting the hair onto the model. below is the original concept for the Ogre. Than you everyone for your comments we are applying the Changes as we speak and also working a a quick 2 minute short animation of the Ogre.

01 January 2009, 02:40 PM
Hey guys here is a new update for you all hope you like, we started on the main character for the short, and a skin update on the Ogre

First the Ogre,

Now the Main Character, his face has not been ZB'd Yet, and we are finishing details at the moment on the Armor,

01 January 2009, 03:06 PM

I am posting here again because we are looking for 3d environment artist for the company still, We need also matte painters. Right now we are at a point where we will start to hit animation hard and piece together scenes. But are a lack of environments. If anyone is interested please mail at

02 February 2009, 02:40 PM
Hope everyone likes the new look for the Ogre, I redid the Anatomy on him and then tightened up a lot of his muscles. I always felt these guys should be pretty buff as they walk around ripping apart stuff and working with their hands. Plus I think the biggest problem is the previous guy was a bit too cartoony, I also made his hands a feet bigger I want that kind of look going with all the characters.

02 February 2009, 02:36 AM
Okay everyone so here is a quick update on the main character for the movie, we are starting on clothing, his proportions are off on the hands and feet on purpose, we are going for a stylized look for him.

02 February 2009, 09:02 PM
Hey Everyone. Im the Lead Animator for Steam Golem Production. We have been working very hard the past few weeks to produce some quality material. We are placing some advanced rigs on the orge and the main character for the 15 min short in production right now. Here is a test animation for the orge's facial expression, its not the finished product just a render to show you guys where we are at for the moment. Hope you enjoy it

02 February 2009, 07:15 PM
good work so far.
i am wondering , do u need animators right now.
i will be happy to work wid you guys as a freelance animator

02 February 2009, 07:17 PM
Hey right now we have 2 animators and not enough for them to do what we need most of all is 3d modelers and storyboard artists, and environment artist 2d and 3d.

02 February 2009, 07:27 PM

this is my work sample have a look

well if you need animators in future let me know.
tHANX & Regards

Okay so with an effort to really nail down the overall look of the characters I have started using Vray - very powerful rendering engine, below are some shots of the shader, just so you can see the impact of it the first shot is without any real SSS and the next one is localizing the SSS to certain area's,

Here is the Ogre with the SSS localized to certain areas,

03 March 2009, 07:45 PM
great looking stuff guys! Makes me wanna get back into high poly modeling.

Keep up the good work.

03 March 2009, 10:14 PM
This looks great guys.

One question would ogre have red blood?

03 March 2009, 06:03 PM
I actually have the Ogre having purple blood, but it makes for quite a weird look when you make him have a purple hue to him.

04 April 2009, 02:20 PM
Okay guys an update on a few things, we have started a 2 minute short with the Ogre model we have finished out, here are some props from that short and finally the Ogre textured and ready to go with final textures,
