Here comes the SteamPork! Long way to go in the modeling part yet. I'll put one screenshot per day with the progress we achieved.
C&C are welcome!

11 November 2008, 12:48 AM (

Our steampunk protagonist is a Pig, a flying one. The plot of the trailer, which in our case is short story, is based on this character's constant need for water (as his engine runs on it) so... "For a thousand years he waited for a drop of whater"...and boom, he has it, what he'll do next?!
How he'll manage to use this energy kick to discover and trigger a domino-like chain of actions which will lead him (or not) to salvation in this steampunk world.

11 November 2008, 08:12 PM
Very unique characters! I like it a lot; and good start on modeling. I'll check back for more updates.

12 December 2008, 09:17 PM
Wonderful stuff. Great lighting. I am looking forward to more.

12 December 2008, 12:39 PM
Staszek, sorry, the storyboard is done as a guideline for us, and it's in romanian.

The story is like this:

Trav down, (voice off: For a thousand years he waited for a drop of water), we see a mechanical apple form, filling with water. A drop of water leaks and falls.
We see the drop of water crushing on something, "The Bug" freaks out, seeing that it was just a drop he has a relief. We see that this scene happens actually on the tongue of the steampork. A light on his forehead blinks making a subtile sound, we understand that from that drop of water he gained a energy kick, enough to swalow the bug. The bug is filled with water too, so our protagonist has more energy to yeat the apple that just formed. From the hole in the "bulb" of that tree trunk another of those bugs gets out " - Duude, where are you?" searching for the first one. The steampork in a free fall gets the other bug ( -- Yeeeehaaa). The steampork starts the engine again {we've put a trick in this one which will revealed in animation} (steampork - Water!), and we see the lake at the horizont). (voice off: will he manage to survive in this steampunk world?...) The steampork moving at full speed... his engine stutters, the sound of flashing light again. (voice off: Or Not...) The steam pork falls down, in the same position as in first scene, only 20 cm far from lake's water.

The End.

Hope I put it allright to understand it paralel to the storyboard

Thanks for the feedback guys!

12 December 2008, 01:21 PM
Thx :)

It will be so cool!

12 December 2008, 10:24 PM

Pyke, Lemong, Thanks, good luck to you too!

01 January 2009, 04:54 PM
Alexandra, thank you, good luck to you and your team too! I saw your concepts, and the idea, trully unique.
I love the book and like the way you turned it.

About the resemblense with Robots, I wasn't aware of it until I recieved a comment and thought, mmm, yes... It came out because of the spherical structure of pork's head I guess. Structure which is needed in his facial movements.

01 January 2009, 06:21 PM
Oh, beautiful renders!
And nice concept too :) Slightly reminds me of "Robots".
Looks like your mechanical beings are after water too - my team doing the Old Man fishing for water :)

Good luck! Nice work.

01 January 2009, 02:03 PM
Very nice style, models and environment!

Good luck!

01 January 2009, 02:32 PM
truly amazing, guys.
great job with light and textures, I really like the atmosphere...

I think the most interesting thing is the perfectly coherent color palette, it just keeps everything together.

are these just out of the box 3d renders? is there any color correction yet?

I'm impressed!

01 January 2009, 02:45 PM
ru-bonsai, thank you, we rendered all the scenes with same lighting and render settings, so we haven't any trouble with keeping the same atmosphere and color pallete.

Yes, we've done slight color correction, not to big anyway, we hate burned collors and we're trying to avoid that.

Thanks again for the kind words guys, hope no technical problems will arise, no big ones, and we'll make it on time.

01 January 2009, 11:34 AM (

Software: 3ds max

We almost finished animation and started rendering, this is without any color corection and any other postprocessing. Sorry for the late update, very busy days.

Woooow!!! I love it! The animation is wonderful and it all has such a whimsical feel to it :D

01 January 2009, 08:59 AM
Incredible... world and mood perfect... love your vision, great animation... :applause: sincerly !

01 January 2009, 01:13 PM
Great character SteamPork! It looks great and animates very well!
Happy rendering.

01 January 2009, 02:19 PM
Very nice work indeed.
Love the animation.

Only thing i don't find too good is the cameramoves. Well, there isn't actually any camera moves. You got some great angles, but sometimes it's like you're not sure if the video is playing or not. Maybe you could do some great things with just subtle camera zooms or little camera moves. Camera's don't always have to move, but when the scene has little movement it can be a good compensation.

Anyways, great work.

01 January 2009, 06:41 PM
Yes, until is not rendered and without any sounds, our style isn't really well defined. The static cameras are is one of our choices, and now it's noteven rendered.

We're working on sound now, hope it'll make more sense then!

Thanks for the tip, we really apreciate it! :)

Hope you'll like the final result!

01 January 2009, 06:07 PM
I like the characters of robots. The animation and colours are really good too.
Good luck guys:)

01 January 2009, 06:25 PM (

02 February 2009, 10:11 AM
Very nice indeed, concept and environments also the animation.I have one question, your story is base on a myth or legend characters,or is just a steampunk story?

Anyway looks very good!

02 February 2009, 10:30 AM
We all know the expresion "when the pigs will fly"... well that's the basic "Myth" on wich I went, and around it, I builded a different steampunk world. That's it. And yes, it's a steampunk storry.
Of course it is the theme requires it :)

Initialy I thought going for atlantis, for a second, but that would be a overussed subject that would have fit very well, so that's it: The Myth of The flying Steampork! :)

02 February 2009, 10:35 AM
Thank you for your replay! BAFTA BAIETI!

02 February 2009, 10:47 AM
We all know the expresion "when the pigs will fly"...
yep... it's truly that in english, and in french it's : when hens will have teeth  haha

02 February 2009, 09:27 PM (

Software: 3ds max,

Our making off is most of all a presentation of our character, because it took alot of time put it together...put them together. The other steps that we didn't mention is rendering and collor corection.

No compositing was done, as we decided to render full scenes, to keep that total "3D" feeling, so every frame is actually what's in the rendered scene.
We consider that matte painting must be verry well done, and if it's not, its not the best solution. By saying that, hope you enjoy our full presentation of the movie and and not regret the couple of minutes of your life watching it.

Thanks everybody, and CG society to work on such a great theme and project!

Looking forward to next one!
