Latest Update: Work In Progress: Final Horse
11 November 2008, 05:06 AM
Ok well looks like I'm in, now will I have the time to finish that is another thing (so damn busy in the next months)
Here's my idea
I'm going to steampunk the Horse of Troy, my idea is still blurry in my head but should clear in the next few days.
11 November 2008, 07:51 AM
So seems like the trojan horse is a popular subject for this challenge, but my idea is made up so I'm going for it any way
My idea is pretty simple but should be cool
start with a black screen and sounds of steaming pumps, with a few shots on close ups of parts of the horse all cut with black screens, slowly revealing the entire horse. Then a shot of the horse in front of a huge metallic gate. From the gate a mechanical eye comes out of a trap door to inspect the horse a bit like the one in Jabba's palace. Once the eye is satisfied the gate will slowly open, then I'll have the title of my movie with a coming soon :)
Trying to keep this simple, because the horse will be lots of work and time on my part is very restricted, and I really want to finish this challenge.
11 November 2008, 08:56 AM
Well this is the start of my modeling, I'm starting with the boiler since it is the source of energy of my horse and I'm gonna build the horse around it.
11 November 2008, 10:23 AM
Good luck to a fellow Montrealer!

So added a few detailed and started some of the main piston/engine, and started some texturing, the map are far from final I might get them dirty, will see when I have my horse finished.
11 November 2008, 09:26 AM
Nice work. Keep it up.
11 November 2008, 03:54 PM
it's my opinion, but maybe it needs a little more futuristic elements? That's what steampunk is all about. Not all, but at least a part. :banghead:
11 November 2008, 05:39 PM
Hmm futuristic elements for steampunk not sure about that, steampunk is about making stuff futuristic with old technology from the insustrial time. So yes it will look futuristic when I have the horse parts over the engine, like plating armor and stuff.
My main reference for steampunk are movies like Steamboy, City of lost children, Atlantis, or Jules Verne's universe that is the direction I'm trying to take more then movies like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow who is a bit to futuristic for my liking more Art Deco then steampunk in my opinion (well don't get me wrong I love Art Deco :) )
Right now I'm mostly doing to basic engine and figuring out what will be moving for my animation, once I'm done with the pistons I'm gonna start the back plating and tail.
11 November 2008, 05:50 PM
Well, it's always hard to give crits and such in a WIP, but what i try to say is that the futuristic element in steampunk is also kind of located in design. But at the moment the model looks like it could have existed in the 19th century. But hey, it's a WIP like i said so can change every day while you add to it.
11 November 2008, 05:56 PM
Hey Nico while you were writing I was editing my post to explain myself a bit :), I know exactly what you mean, by the way love your AT-AT Zep (would make a nice boom if it blew) Star wars would of been a hundred time better if it have been steampunk.
11 November 2008, 06:13 PM
i'm also in this big challenge as well. I finished my walker and just had to do this one too. I normally don't post much in the beginning cause there could be a lot of confusion by crits and suggestions. Since posting in other thread is a must for this challenge, i try to spend the time right by giving more feedback then just to say "great work!" posts.
And i get whay you are saying about the films. Had the same thing yesterday when i saw the golden compass. It's not steampunk but it's based on it. So there are many styles and therefore many confusion.
11 November 2008, 06:18 PM
Well in your post you said "But at the moment the model looks like it could have existed in the 19th century" that for me is worth a million compliments, cause that is exactly the direction I'm trying to take :)
11 November 2008, 06:20 PM
then I say no more
11 November 2008, 12:41 AM
Nice model and texture :D
11 November 2008, 03:02 PM
Well this is the main engine, and I animated it so now it loops, and added a bit of dirt.
Now I can start the back of the horse :)
11 November 2008, 09:18 PM
very good progress, keep it up!
11 November 2008, 12:29 AM
Looking very cool so far. Can't wait to see more.
11 November 2008, 09:31 AM
hey Ar, looking great so far! keep it up :)
11 November 2008, 12:09 PM
awsome... pure steampunk stuff
11 November 2008, 03:19 AM
I am liking this! Second one I've seen, equally different. Keep up the good work. :) Mine is a myth from Greek mythology- Achilles and his soldiers. :) Sigh... so much further behind you.
11 November 2008, 07:38 AM
Great detailing and texturing sir :) can't wait to watch it moving!
11 November 2008, 01:00 PM
waaawww i like it this rusty and metal stuff .. yaa Trojan project again heee good luck dude
11 November 2008, 10:23 AM
Didn't have much time to work on it, but started the shape of the horse and working more on texture still have much to do .
11 November 2008, 02:30 AM
Nice model and textures.
11 November 2008, 11:53 AM
The shape of the horse is really settling in. But right now it's weekend so where is an other update? :bounce:
I appreciate you giving me more of a head start :scream: but don't push it
cheers and very curious to see the rest
11 November 2008, 10:31 PM
it's coming, I don't have much time to work on this. Weekend lol I work on weekends (the joy of freelance at home)
11 November 2008, 12:54 AM
I have to say that looks pretty cool.
11 November 2008, 08:43 AM
Very cool so far, Gerard!

Your design is very nice. Wooden boiler on a steam engine is a bit unusual but looks relay nice on your model. Only one small thing - the neck (if it is a neck) could use one more level of subdivision. It's profile looks just a little segmented now.
12 December 2008, 11:27 PM
The wood is over a metal boiler :)
The neck is in one segment cause i might have more on the under part of it will post an update soon.
12 December 2008, 09:12 AM
Ok well here's a little update, still lots of work to do but I was a bit fed up of working on the body so I started working on the legs
12 December 2008, 09:23 AM
I love the small details. Fantastic!
12 December 2008, 09:55 AM
very nicely done .. keep it up.
12 December 2008, 04:23 PM
Yeah, a horse isnt the easiest thing to make, we should know, ours has 8 legs. :)
12 December 2008, 08:45 AM
Big update for me :), finally done with the modeling and rigging of the legs, I'm not good at rigging but this should do the trick. I started the front plate, to tired to put the little spheres and textures it will have to wait to tomorrow.
Thanx all for your comments it's appreciated :)
12 December 2008, 09:20 PM
very nice work .. quite a few horses around in this challenge i see ..
12 December 2008, 10:09 PM
its coming along really good with this kind of metal choices
12 December 2008, 12:32 AM
Hi there, loving the details! I just have one comment, maybe the grey metal is a bit too reflective, it looks wet right now.
12 December 2008, 09:39 AM
Well only two things left to do, the tail and the head that I started already. Then I can start modeling my other elements.
12 December 2008, 10:58 PM
nice feel of art and machinery in this hourse, really cool stuff
01 January 2009, 04:36 PM
Well didn't have much time during the holydays, and I just noticed I never posted my final horse so here it is.
I'm still in the race but yikes deadline is coming up fast, have a few scene render but I want to finish the first scenes before posting anything, and I have some that still have a pass missing, doing my smoke on a different pass.
So keep watching should have something up soon, and my storyboard to :)
01 January 2009, 01:52 AM
This one rocks!
A pretty nice model you got there!
01 January 2009, 03:57 AM
Well I'm out of the race, everytime I think I have free time I have something to do for work :(
Well here's my favorite scene at least :)
Clic here (http://www.arlutik.com/Skull.mov)
Sorry all, I thought during the holydays I would of been able to do some work but it was the otherway around, not easy doing contest when you have kids :)
01 January 2009, 03:52 PM
it's too bad to hear this but i gotta say, i'm already surprised that i'm still going on. It almost looks like trying to reach the deadline while it's impossible.
I hope you'll find time to finish the horse completely and put it in some environment just to get it into your portfolio. It's a lovely piece. Don't let the hard work vanish!
cheers and hope to see you in another challenge
01 January 2009, 06:34 PM
The horse is finish
I have a scene of it walking the only thing missing is the smoke coming out of the cheminee
So I'll find a minute at one point to do it
And I'll be back for another challenge hopefully the deadline will be a bit longer and not when I'm in the middle of a big contract :)
01 January 2009, 06:02 PM
The horse is a very interesting concept. I like it :)
