Hey Everyone - fantastic challenge, really looking forward to getting stuck into it... Maybe I'm being a bit ambitious entering the video category as the amount of time I get to spend on my entry will largely depend on my other workload over christmas - fingers crossed for a quiet one!!

My idea so far is based on Christopher Marlowe's play 'The Tragical History of Dr Faustus'. The legend goes that Faustus makes a deal with Lucifer giving him 24 years on Earth with a demon - Mephistopheles - as his servant. In return, Lucifer get's Faustus' soul. My video will pick up the story at the end of the alloted 24 years when Mephistopheles arrives at the laboratory to collect Faustus' soul only to find that the Doctor, contrary to most versions of the myth, has not wasted his 24 years bemoaning his eternal damnation but has in fact constructed a badass, steam powered exoskeleton in which to fight for his soul...

Storyboards/character designs etc. to follow shortly.

This is pretty much the completed Faustus mesh - he'll be hidden within the steamwalker for most of the story so you'll only get to see him right at the end...

Hand and bicep details - all pistons, gears and chains are rigged and work properly - will post a video as soon as I figure out how to compress it!!

Staszek - Thanks for the comment. I agree, I do need to work out the storyboard on paper - I'm going to try and address it over the weekend!

Jas2 - Cheers buddy, seems like there's still tonnes to do and I can't believe we're already over halfway through the challenge!

Very great modeling so far. Love the cartoonish faces and especially the mechanical arm with the glasses see-through's.

Nico - Thanks for the comment, glad you like the cartoon style. Hopefully I can pull off some animation to match! Just checked out the latest updates on your thread - great storyboard, could be a really funny piece and of course there's some great modelling/texturing to go with it... Good luck.

Finished blocking in main shapes for the steamwalker - still need to add lots of pipes coming from the boiler to drive the joints.

Thanks for te comment Marc, glad you like it... The render engine is Mental Ray in Max. These poses took about 5 mins to render with Final Gathering... You're project is coming along very nicely too. You have a really unique dark style going on - best of luck with the rest of the challenge

arcaneg, thanks man. All the pistons, tubes, gears etc. are linked to a simple custom rig so they all move as though driving the joints of the character.... that's the theory anyway!

You guys have a very ambitious concept - it looks great so far... keep it up and best of luck

Your steamwalker is looking really good. Old train cow catchers as his toes are fantastic. With all these cogs, chains and pistons it's going to look great in motion.

Sweet character design! Nice shader too. I was going to try to make my steam-bike gold/copperish; but you've really nailed that look! Can't wait to see it animated :)

Hi everyone - no updates for a while... been hard at it trying to get things finished in time! Still not sure everything will be done for Tuesday but hopefull most of it will be done.

It's a great filisophycal story to tell.
Animatic looks pretty good, and lt looks like you have done a lot of work on detail - love the clock and the mechanical hand!

Thanks man, texturing is definately not my strongpoint but I'm reasonably happy with how it's gone.

the shading on the golden helmet is amazing. looks like there is small greasy thumbptrints on it as well. WOW

It's been a while since i last posted here! And by the looks of the renders i really hope you're gonna finish it. The think i most fear now is not completing the rendering, cause i should make it in time - and in worst case i need to drop the very first outdoor intro scene.
But it's the compositing and video editing that i fear now. Cause the way i see it i'll be doing this the day the deadline is at. What a horror.

So i got my thumbs up for you. Cheers

Software: 3ds max,After Effects

Well I'm afraid time has run out on me. I'm gutted not to have been able to finish as I have all the animation and rendered passes but I just didn't managed to get all the compositing done. Anyway I've added the shots that did get finished to my latest animatic so at least you can get a taste of what could have been!!

Of course I'll get things finished up and post the final piece on my cg portfolio.

Best of luck to everyone who did manage to finish, from what I've seen the standard is awesome. And thanks to the administrators for running a fantastic challenge.

Even though most of it was playblasts, I still really liked it! One of the few pieces to rely heavily on dialogue, but the voices work well. Also love the big steam suit. Wish it was longer! I wanted to see what happens :twisted:

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Little progress update - During the challenge I started rendering some shots at 640x360 just to speed things along a bit. Since missing the deadline I've gone back to render those shots at 1024x576. I'm now having to attend to all the jobs that got pushed to one side during the challenge but, I'll be getting back to it next week hopefully and will post the finished piece once it's done.

Thanks again for looking - it really helps keeps the motivation going to know people are interested!

After a mammoth backlog of work I finally got round to finishing my Steampunk entry 'Faustus' - based on Christopher Marlowe's play. Thanks to everyone that took the time to visit this thread and leave a comment - the encouragement is really appreciated.

this is pretty awesome...

nice storytelling, nice images. it works pretty good with the music and dialogue, which is my only complaint: the voices could be louder, they are hidden away from the music and soundfxs.

beside that, its really cool. congrats on the finished piece
