Just to make sure we stay on track with the requirements of this challenge, I c'n'p some important points in the guidelines over here.
Steampunk is the application of advanced steam age technology to a modern or science fiction setting.
This challenge asks you to render traditional myths and legends in the steampunk style using elements of gears, springs, brass and steam power. Re-imagine legendary characters from some of the world's most ancient stories, such as a steam-powered minotaur, or a Zeppelin-mounted Thor, hurling lightning bolts from the sky.

Here's the production schedule as promised. :)
I just realised if we only work on this during the weekends, we won't be able to complete even 1 percent. :P
December Wk2 onwards will be very heavy, be prepared.

Hey Yongs! That's so cool!
I like the first one too! The costume is interesting.
Maybe at this stage we can see more of fullbody overall proportions, so we know which parts can be pushed and play around the proportions :)
Maybe Alchemy will come in handy :P just maybe, haha!
if you have the time :D
Zi Chao has some good research on the blog btw..

ronald: yea i jus saw his researches. Okay I'll do some full body skecthes when i'm free. Oh yea alchemy, but I can't alchemy at work, people will know i'm doing my own stuff haha. Will try alchemy during the week ends or some evening when i'm free.
BTW regarding our story, here's what our team has been discussing about, the part where the monkey king creates havoc in the heavenly kingdom. this is from wiki:
Havoc in the Heavenly Kingdom
Sun Wukong as depicted in a scene in a Beijing operaHoping that a promotion and a rank amongst the gods would make him more manageable, the Jade Emperor invited Wukong to Heaven, where the monkey believed he would receive an honorable place as one of the gods. Instead, he was made the head of Heavenly Stables to watch over horses. When he discovered this, Wukong rebelled and proclaimed himself the "Great Sage, Equal of Heaven", and allied with some of the most powerful demons on earth. The Heavens' initial attempt at subduing the monkey king was unsuccessful; although they were forced to recognize his title, however, they attempted to put him off as the guardian of Heavenly Garden. When he found that he was excluded from a royal banquet that included every other important god and goddess, Wukong's indignation again turned to open defiance. After stealing the empress Xi Wangmu's "peaches of immortality", Lao Tzu's "pills of longevity", and the Jade Emperor's royal wine, he escaped back to his kingdom in preparation for his rebellion.
Wukong later defeated the Army of Heaven's 100,000 celestial warriors - each fight an equivalent of a cosmic embodiment, including all 28 constellations, four heavenly kings, and Nezha - and finally proved himself equal to the best of Heaven's generals, Erlang Shen. Eventually, through the teamwork of Taoist and Buddhist forces, including the efforts from some of the greatest deities, Wukong was captured. After several failed attempts at execution, Wukong was locked into Lao Tzu's eight-way trigram cauldron to be distilled into an elixir by the most sacred and the most severe samadhi fires. However, after 49 days, the cauldron exploded and Wukong jumped out, stronger than ever. He now had the ability to recognize evil in any form, through his huǒyǎn-jīnjīng (火眼金睛) (lit. "fiery-eyes golden-gaze"), an eye condition that also gave him a weakness to smoke.
With all of their options exhausted, the Jade Emperor and the authorities of Heaven appealed to the Buddha, who arrived from his temple in the West. The Buddha made a bet with Wukong that he could not escape from his palm. Wukong, knowing that he could cover 108,000 li in one leap, smugly agreed. He took a great leap and then flew to the end of the world in seconds. Nothing was visible except for five pillars, and Wukong surmised that he had reached the ends of Heaven. To prove his trail, he marked the pillars. Afterwards, he leaped back and landed in Buddha's palm. There, he was surprised to find that the five "pillars" he had found were in fact the five fingers of the Buddha's hand. When Wukong tried to escape, Buddha turned his hand into a mountain. Before Wukong could shrug it off, Buddha sealed him there using a strip of paper with the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum written thereon in gold letters, and Wukong remained imprisoned for five centuries.
channelbox: There's the fire cauldron I've been thinking about, it came in before the buddha's 5 mountains.
so maybe we have to cut down on the story, maybe take out some parts or so.

way to go! cool, so do we want the cauldron in? I think it's not a bad idea... shall we started piecing the story together?
the story is quite quite clear to me now... i'll ponder over it.. thanks for that great passage :)

Initial Work In Progress
12 December 2008, 04:22 PM
Been long since we've been posting, all of us were busy with Siggraph Asia. We're behind schedule but I really hope we can make it!
Okay so for this week, my teammates nailed the story and they're doing on the storyboard and timing reel now.
As for me, more designs of monkey king and some sketches of elements that maybe used. I guess this is somewhat the look of monkey king. I'll be doing a detailed one so my teammate can model them.

The myth about the king of monkeys very is pleasant. It is interesting to see a variant in style steampunk.
12 December 2008, 04:11 PM
TaYfun: Hi TaYfun! Nice to see ppl around !:) yea we're trying our best to impliment steampunk into this amazing myth! hope it turns out well!
Here's an initial sketch of the monkey king's famous weapon, jus silhouttes and an initial idea of how the pattern on the stick would be like. hopefully i can nail it down within this week. I was thinking of putting victorian motifs along chinese dragons along the stick.
More to come!~

saludos y buena suerte
I admire so tedious people
I congratulate you by the "table of times" or Schedule Production that you realised.
I hope someday, to be able to create one, and to make step by step each one of the tasks .
It is that I'm new in this of the animation and still I am half disorderly,
Just now I am posting Sketches and, although I am modeling quite hard, I'm realizing the difficult thing that it is going to be to arrive in time.
Now the 2 months of the Challenge seem to me not much time…
greetings and good luck!

Thanks for the comment! We are also in the process of learning to plan a good production schedule. Currently we are slightly behind time so we are trying very hard to make up! Sometimes I also feel there isn't enough time left to complete this challenge, but I guess it's never too late to plan..
My friends and I are working very hard to realise our submission. :D
thanks again and buena suerte to you too! :D
