i will work on Ulysse.
i am working on it after my job, and i will update this thread in the week end.
the models are made quickly with basic shapes, with not a lot details or textures,
only Ulysse has a displacament map.
i am not sure i will make a storyboard, because i want to be free on this project, to do and change my mind every time i want.
the head design is based on this picture of Ulysse :
and the body from Cobra :
the mood will be a mix of this 2 heros :
space adventure Ulysse

11 November 2008, 06:03 AM
1rst animations to test the look. no dispacement for Ulysse except for the last one.

Looks like you are trying to show too many things in one time... I couldn't quite catch the story while watching your animatic... anyway - nice job. Maybe the shot with raised weapon and hitting the robot needs some more rethinking and refinement... good luck!

11 November 2008, 11:47 PM
Thank you kris !
in fact for the story, there is no one in this animatic. that just quick test to see the characters/world in action. nothing else.
i am about to finish the story for the trailer, and i will begining the process to make the reel shots after.

11 November 2008, 08:39 PM
I like it. I think the camera moves way too much in some of the scenes. It's very 90'ies "yay we got 3d, lets move the camera!" hehehe. The designs looks cool, especially the giant in scene 2 or 3 which goes face to face with the ulysse(?) and jabs his jaws.

keep it up, and you'll be done in 4 days. :scream:

nice man

it looks very good, congratulations!!!

Hey man. Love the style and the lighting you have going on! Are you going to do the entire short in black and white? Its almost got a marionette, shadow puppet feel. Very VERY cool. :D

Im no animator (far from it!), but Im sure some people a little more qualified will be able to make some more technical suggestions to the run cycle. From my end, I just feel like it could use more weight. Its a mechanical device, and is moving to smoothly for the silhouette its depicting. It feels like it should be a little...slower....more bulky. Weather that means bending the legs more as he lands, and putting more pressure on those leg springs, I dunno. Like I said, i'm no animator, so take what I say with a pinch of salt!

EDIT-Just took a look at your! You are a legend! Your FREAKS image WIPS have been my background for about 4 months now! I change them occasionally, but always come back!

Hi Pyke, thank you for your comments, not sure it will be full black and white. i am working on that... i will decide it at the last minute :)

i am glad you love my freaks ! i am following your great steampunk thread in secret, and will comment it soon .

It's starting to look more unified and cohesive. I love the way you play with light and dark in this piece. Too bad you got rid of the song :) I found it a bit strange at first, but was surprisingly catchy.

Incredible!! Was hooked the whole 4 minutes. Too bad it isn't really feature length :P

02 February 2009, 08:14 AM
Man, your short totally amazed me!
Not only because i am crazy about any kind of noir stuff,
but because it has such an intense mood and brilliant camera!

Congratulations! :)

02 February 2009, 10:11 AM
Great work! I agree that the film noir style to it really gives it a great feeling. And the eyes on your character looked totally real...excellent lighting/shading there!

02 February 2009, 08:01 PM
one man.
one machine.
50 tons of work.
Ulysses's texture was incredible, way to capture a mood to the fullest with such wonderful detail.
phenomenal job :)

02 February 2009, 01:53 AM
Thank you all for your cool words, i am glad you like it.

This video was made during my spare time, at home, with one pc (core2 2.4ghz).

i dont made any storyboard, i wanted to be free to change everything at any time.

The process was really simple : keep the modeling and rendering process as simple as possible ... because of the little computer configuration.
So i used basic shapes : spheres, cubes, lines etc...( except for the ulysses head and the "robot" girl).
Posseidon is a combinaison of a simple biped character studio, with fonts i bended on it.
i use his eyes for all the characters and animals in the video.

About 3 pass by shot. 1 color/shadow, 1 z depth, one fog/light and sometimes one for the smoke.
Under 30 secondes of rendering for all the passes together, except for those whith smoke.
when a shot was to long to render, i optimized it : lower the reflections, lower the amount of shadow map and the antialiasing ( big mistake for this one...)
no displacement map, very limited bump, 3 lights maximum ( only one for the shadows ), no final gather.
The environements was made after the animation, to limit the amount of work/render on them.
Because i dont made any story board, there is a lot of rush i dont have used for the final video. But it was the price i paid to be as free as possible, in this conditions of work.

i made the sound myself, with sounds and loop i found on
A friend ( (niCo Kraken , dit le mouteuX) help me at the end to clean the volume of the soundtrack ( my speakers looks like a yogurt pot ) and he add some nice subb "under it ".

Because of my bad english (as you can see here), i used the demo of a speach synthesizer for the voice.

i enjoyed to work on this video, i learned a lot of things. i hope i will have the chance to work soon on other videos.

thank you !

and very clever.

I really like this dreamy feeling you gave it,
and you kept a very productive workflow, congratulations!

watching this video fussli, dalý and bunuel came to my mind, wonderful atmosphere.

keep up and good luck!

02 February 2009, 06:22 PM
Great work Marc and well done for finishing...

I think the restrictions you imposed on yourself actually helped give this piece its unique feel and atmosphere. Very inventive use of your resources and a fantastically moody result.

All the best

02 February 2009, 10:42 PM
Your style and mood are GREAT! great story which captured me for the whole movie! Congratulations on finishing and goodluck with the judging!

02 February 2009, 02:40 AM

Keep up the great work, you should be really proud.

How do you intend to release the finished version? Or is the trailer all there is?

02 February 2009, 03:40 PM
Congratulations! I really prayed you would win because i was so in love with your
noir style, et voila!
Well deserved! :applause:

02 February 2009, 11:54 AM

This is by far my favourite entry, was expecting something amazin from Monsieur Mordelet
any case. The realism on the humans is mind boggling to me.
Love the style, rhythm, animation, lighting editing and all the production stuff.

Amazing what speech synthesisers sound like these days.
Really outstanding imho (in my humble opinion) In 2 months?
I don't know, to me this IS the Master Award. But hey, judges differ huh?

Still enjoying the movie. Going to be a while!

PS-- And it's a four page thread. I'm shocked. Comes to prove popularity really
doesn't seem to matter that much here. I find that quite encouraging.

02 February 2009, 03:20 PM
Congrats!!!
