06-14-2003, 04:41 PM

06-14-2003, 04:49 PM
Wow, really cool, I would have no chance against this guy!
1 Crit.... eyes look a little lifless.
Not the eyeballs., but the skin around the eyes look to relaxed.

that first pic is expose quality, imho.

One thing that caught my eye is the big toe in the last pic, it looks like its been painfully twisted out of the foot, I know its not exactly a human's anatomy, but I think having such an awkward looking toe is distracting.

Other than that its perfect

06-14-2003, 05:51 PM
thats totally awesome, the only thing i don't like is the texture on the amror, looks jsut like "noise", it dosn't look like rusted or owrn battle armor, jsut the noise filter in photoshop, or in max even, and something with the upper lip dosn't sit right with me, but other than that its awesome

06-14-2003, 05:52 PM
Nice to see it finished.

06-14-2003, 05:55 PM
nice work m@ lovely texturing.

06-14-2003, 05:56 PM
Awesome!! :bounce: But I think that his teeth is too shiny, they are usually very dirty and alot of black areas can be seen on them... rest is great!!! :airguitar

06-14-2003, 06:00 PM
Holy shit, this one's outstanding. Great work! Great work on the textures, too.

06-14-2003, 06:05 PM
That's one scarily realistic looking beast, great stuff.

Agree about the toe looking odd, and the feet look too flat to support him, but hey, I find it hard to find any faults with it at all.

06-14-2003, 06:09 PM
Thats really nice!

Great Work!

06-14-2003, 06:10 PM
Well all i can say is what they others have =) truly awesome man.

Got a question. you said the fur was modeled and placed by hand. Does it mean what u meant literally??
Because if u did....geeeez how many hours did that take and do u have a secret?

06-14-2003, 06:10 PM
mm i just dont buy it, its an amazin peice of work, but it just doesnt 'go' IMHO anyway. Keep it up!

06-14-2003, 06:17 PM
I can remember this alright. It was one of the best entries. :buttrock: I'm sooo glad you got around to finishing it. It's fantastic.:airguitar Hope to see more from you soon.

06-14-2003, 06:30 PM
awesome textures!

he scares me tho :surprised

06-14-2003, 06:31 PM
Great work

I agree with you Waz to a certain extent, about the armor in the first picture.

I think that the "so called" noise is NOT the problem, The effect looks great and very realistic, like strong metal. To me it seems much more advanced than just using plain noise too.

It just seems to look too clean, maybe some more markings like on the top of the helmet would do the trick.

The fur looks amazing, I would love to thoroughly learn your technique for creating it, did you just assign the fur to multiple flat planes and model them around the body? have you ever used the Advanced Painter Script?

Thx, keep up the great work

06-14-2003, 06:41 PM
I love the detail and design.

Great Work. :applause:

06-14-2003, 06:42 PM

Uh, I am pretty sure that's the way that he meant it to be. It fits the creature well since it appears to be an apelike creature. Just look at the feet on apes and you'll see that they have an opposable "big toe." :) Awesome job! How about a wireframe?

06-14-2003, 06:47 PM
Thats superb, nothing to crit on that!

It looks really great. I'd like to see you add some emotion to the brow area. The screaming mouth looks so fierce, but the eyes look kinda blank right now.

Model/render/surfacing-wise, it's amazing.

06-14-2003, 07:08 PM
ROCK ON :buttrock: Kudos to m@ I  it.

06-14-2003, 07:12 PM
M@ . . . what are you doing here?? Your suppose to be in this month's challenge heheh

It's looking great dude!! The only thing that bothers me is that the chain looks like it's floating for some reason, and, he is missing sylivia (<-- however you spell that) in his mouth. Or, you could add some foam:p

Otherwise, this was one of the best entries .. . Hope to see some more of your work dude.

06-14-2003, 07:16 PM

already saw it's WIP, but it is even better now!

06-14-2003, 07:18 PM

06-14-2003, 07:24 PM
SO cool to finaly see it finished :applause:

Now all I need is an 1024X768 wallpaper render :p

06-14-2003, 07:27 PM
That looks neat but the bump or the "noise" on the metal textures looks odd.
What kind of metal are you going for? It looks to be a bronze but like is aid, that noise is throwing it off.
The facial features of the ape look awsome.
I won't want to fight em!

06-14-2003, 07:49 PM
really a clear work...

06-14-2003, 08:04 PM
Brutal Nice work.

Holy crap! I can´t breathe... awesome work. But that metal looks little bit odd. That skull is perfect!

06-14-2003, 08:45 PM

06-14-2003, 09:09 PM
Massive undertaking and you succeded.
I would love to see his face get as evil and angry as it can get!

06-14-2003, 09:15 PM
Hey, I think this fellow is awsome. Great design, I love the face and his skull accessory. :)

06-14-2003, 09:20 PM
Oh my god. This is amazing work. There are some very minor issues but damn, I want to enjoy this pic. IMO definetly Expose quality... (if not better ;)

Keep it up.

06-14-2003, 09:23 PM
he COULD be more dirtier... you know...
like.. hmm... goo everywhere in this mouth dripping down and stuff. but DAYMN!! good job!

06-14-2003, 09:38 PM
very nice indeed. but i think the armor has too much noise on it.

LotR? i thought him coming from Planet of the apes! lol :D

06-14-2003, 09:52 PM
Brutal Nice work.

man how many times I gotta tell you this thing is freakin amazing! glad to see it again...very glad in fact

wonderfull work!

come on irc again we misss you!

06-14-2003, 10:24 PM
I dunno if this has been said already, but I think you should put a notch or two in the sword. Or maybe just a small dent or something... It looks very new at the moment :) More dirt in general would be nice on second thought... Or not, depending on what you aim for of course. Great job nonetheless

06-14-2003, 10:26 PM
close to perfection ! And then the fact its 'just' a scanline render.

06-14-2003, 10:37 PM
Nice work! I like it :p

06-14-2003, 10:47 PM
very kool...the texturing of the sword is really crazy with all that blood...

one comment though....the big toe/thumb on his feet is wrong positioned to be a real ape... sorry to say that...

06-14-2003, 10:53 PM
please tell me whats your techniqe for creating it .
very amazing

06-14-2003, 11:01 PM
You **** true quite good.Waiter, your work is very fascinating.

06-14-2003, 11:15 PM
Thanks all for the comments! the crits are appreciated too. It helps me to see clear what I've been too close to for long hours.I'm sorry I can't reply to everybody..

about the fur : it's done with patterns of ~100 modelled hair each, and I placed those patterns by hand on the model... So I didn't place the hair one by one but 100 by 100:D

about the armor : no it's not "noise".. but mouse-painted textures.. .. I agree that could improve it.

Virtuoso : thanks a lot man.. thanks for your invitation  that's greatly appreciated..but I don't have much time those days.

Apt Pupil : thanks buddy. I wish I had some time for this challenge 'cause it's great. I'd like to see you entering this one too.;)

ila solomon ::beer: :)

KingMob : hehe thanks.. I'm quite often on the channel in fact. We lack synchronization seemingly.

saturen3 : it's all box/poly modelling/meshsmooth. And a lot of time.

06-14-2003, 11:33 PM
Simply Amazing! I haven't seen The Two Towers yet, but this character looks better then the CGI characters in FOTR. Great job!

06-14-2003, 11:47 PM
I would add one more ape and then call the image "The Apes of Wrath".

Other than that, it's awesome!!

06-15-2003, 12:03 AM
Wow! what else can we say...

06-15-2003, 01:22 AM
Great work!:bounce: :bounce:

06-15-2003, 01:30 AM
Nice work, thats all I got to say. Props and respect.

06-15-2003, 01:32 AM
Hey man, the armor comment. I didn't mean it was Noise persay, like a fractal. I was just saying it came arcross very noisey.
What is the bump map there?
I'd love to know what kind of metal you think it is made out of.
If you know, then you can figure out how its properties would work with the shape you choose it to take.
Whats the backstory? Is it hand made? Blacksmith? Monkey-made with crud tools, very abrassivly, kinda primal brutal workmanship?
If so, you should ad some marks that would go with that sort of process maybe?
Right not it looks "form" made, kinda like a graphite mold similar to some modern cast molds in an assembly line.
Don't beleive that would be the case.
If its magicly made , perhaps some marking that would show that and no "handmade" marks.
Just an idea, curious as to how you see his backstory.
He also looks very clean, if you look at Gorillas upclose , thos guys got wacky crap in their fur and knotted areas. He's so clean that he might be right out of a Salon.
I like it a lot, but I think adding some visual hints as to his background, and personality would take it to the next level.

06-15-2003, 02:18 AM
i especially like the blood on the sword and skull

06-15-2003, 05:58 AM
nice character! but its built more like a man than a monkey to me... maybe i'm wrong... any ways nice job keep it up!

06-15-2003, 06:48 AM

06-15-2003, 07:32 AM

06-15-2003, 07:34 AM
interesting someone mentioning LOTR here. I recall the guy who designed the cave troll looking at his early art and saying he would NEVER hang a skull from the trolls belt or neck as it appeared in some early designs. He thought was it a bit cheesey in hindsight.

But its still a great skull:thumbsup:

06-15-2003, 08:22 AM
fantastic, better than any ape I have ever seen.Only minor crit is the eyes could use a little more sparkle, life. But still top type work has been done here.

06-15-2003, 09:10 AM
WOW, u could have win the challenge if u have completed it in time! >):applause:

06-16-2003, 12:37 PM
Bah I say! he's nothing special ;) You gotta fix the eyes some more still tho, they seem to be not focusing on anything to cause such rage.

 :D

06-17-2003, 09:32 PM

Beautiful model.. just had to chime in real quick and I hope you don't mind a few critiques.. I apologize if they have been mentioned already:

.. the eyes.. with the mouth in the angry position it is in I would expect them to be more squinty.. try screaming into your mirror to see what I mean..

..the chain is floating a bit around his neck (look at the shadow).. needs some weight..

..the spikes coming out of the armor don't look right.. they should have more of a smooth transition to the armor plates... that is if they are cast with the armor.. which they appear to be. If they are bolted on then you need some sort of gap where they meet the plate so they look like seperate pieces..

Now, what I LOVE:

..the armor.. looks like sand cast bronze to me.. beautiful..

..the hair, very nice, though expensive technique..

..LOVE the human thigh bone you used for the sword's handle..

..the expression... wow.

Basically a terrific model! .. awesome job!

06-19-2003, 09:10 AM
Great work!
I have some minor crits though:
The filmgrain on the bronze is too much imho.
Esp. on the chain.
The way the chain is put in the skull is a bit weird. It looks like it is just pushed in the skull...
And I really have to say that the bone of the sword is way COOOOL!!
Again,

06-19-2003, 09:55 AM
tro for
