Hi everyone! First time entrant, I finish uni tomorrow (literally, my last exam EVER is in 10 hours and this is what I'm doing hehe) so I figured this is an excellent opportunity to make something portfolio-worthy while I'm still unemployed and hang out with some extremely talented people that I've silently idolized for a long time :)
At the moment I'm planning to do a short 90sec movie-trailer type video and my myth of choice is Santa Claus and Christmas! I was initially inspired to make a steam-punk evil robot Santa that fills peoples hearts with fear like in Futurama, but I don't think I'll have time for any fancy explosions so I'll see how it goes once I start planning soon and by Monday I'll have some concrete details and sketches down! I have no doubt it will be awesome lol my mouth is watering at the thought of Santa's steam-punk workshop in the North Pole :D
Back to study now!

Ok I've been having a hard time coming up with an interesting story that lasts less than 2 minutes and is achievable in 2 months lol currently this is where I stand:
We open with an ominous looking laboratory-type building in the North Pole. The mood is dark and creepy reminiscent of Frankenstein. Inside is an old man (Santa Claus) making a robot lookalike come to life with the help of his assistants (his elves). The robot looks evil and dangerous and as he comes to life we fade to black.
We fade back into a closeup of an old school gramophone with Santa's chubby hand placing the needle on the spinning record. Some christmasy music plays and Santa walks to his chair. We now see he's in a big living-room. He sits down, relaxes, takes a sip of a Martini and smiles casually.
Cut to the final scene. We're on board Santa's awesome steampunk Sleigh now flying in the sky and the robot (Santa-lookalike) is struggling with a giant 'naughty-or-nice' list in his hands. The final shot is the classic - Santa's sleigh silhouetted in front of the moon. Freezeframe and then fade away (or something like that).
So total of 4 environments, 3 main types of characters and an awesome steampunk Sleigh. I think that's the most I can take on, animating is my weakest point so I needed something not driven entirely by the character animation while I improve.
I don't think my story quite comes across at the moment I need to think it through again after I finish my initial animatic (which I don't know how to upload... YouTube? lol) I tried to storyboard but my drawing was atrocious so I went straight to a simple animatic.

Damn this is harder than I thought lol To get him to look creepy, steampunk and still resemble Santa is tough :( This is what I came up with today...
Feedback is oh so welcome :) Especially about his hat and how I can make the entire thing more steampunk... I was looking at Victorian era clothing for reference but I want him to have a bit of a crazy scientist meets Santa look heh

Just getting the sleigh design blocked in. I segmented it like that so that hopefully it resembles the way Santa's sleigh looks with the reindeer flying up front. Lots more gears/rivets/bevels will be added later and how much will depend on time ofcourse :)

Still has some work but I'm gonna move onto the modeling other other crucial parts of the story first before I start tweaking things. I'm quite happy with the way the proportions turned out :)
Next I start on Santa's Workshop! :D
