For this one, I'm thinking along the lines of the mythical story of Daedalus and his son Icarus who flew too close to the sun with his wax wings. Maybe I should choose something more obscure...

Here we have Icarus flying too close to a massive sun / furnace; the bolts holding the metal feathers to of his wings have melted and the feathers are dropping off and showering his father down below.

So here I've attacked the marker sketch in Photoshop - I'm thinking brass for his Daedalus's hands and forearms and feet and calves, quite human like but obviously carved from brass and articulated. A shiny brass name plate on his stomach written in an old style script. He's supposed to be looking up in anguish as bits and pieces of Icarus's wings come raining down. The wings need a lot of work...not sure whats going on there yet.

I've been adding more detail and adjusting the position of elements.

The first of the metal feathers that have dropped off Icarus has appeared. I might add a filigree pattern to the nearest feathers in the final image.

This is one of my favorite entries so far.

The one thing I'm not clear on with it though: Is icarus a robot? and daedalus a robot? or is one a robot and one a human? or are they both people in mechanical suits?

Very nice!

As others have said before, the POV is awesome! Your line work is well done too.

Just one little thing. Define the shoulder joints a little more, to give the perception of full range of motion. Right now it seams "forced" to work.

Other than that, everything else is looking good!

Howzit Rupert, that's a really striking image and I really love the way it fits squarely into the theme of the challenge. The Icarus story really lends itself to steampunkification. If I had to give one small crit, it would be that the armour in your latest image is perhaps a little too futuristic looking, and could be more Victorianised, but ultimately that's your creative choice.

Legacy40k: Thanks dude - you are right what's going on here? I think they are two steam powered humanoid robots, built by human hands and having human intelligence. The hands, feet and heads will be the most human like in appearance, I'm thinking shiny bronze or gold for these parts.

I'm working on a linework pencil sketch at the moment in which I'm bringing in Victorian elements, such as a lions head below the knee joint of the foremost leg. I've also got some steam train reference shots handy which will keep me from heading off into the far future (hopefully).

Great point of view and the viewer is in the "action". Interresting way to show the fall of Icarus, the fact is your illustration answer well the 2 needs in this contest : Instant regognisable Myth / Steampunk Aesthetism.
After around my personnal taste, I would personnaly treat Icarus as a midway between robot & Human , to keep the famous "human error". not 100% robotic as a flying robocop ... Keep good job

Here I'm working on the linework using an HB pencil. I've brought in some Victorian details such as the lion heads and filigree. Busy fiddling around with internal mechanics trying to make it look believable...

This shows the technique a bit better - I used a lightbox to trace the photoshop painting onto paper and refine.

This is a lot like my concept, cept Icarus is still in the air. It would be right before the mechanical wings break. I really like the way this is turning out. It's cool how we both decided this story. One thing I would like to see is part of the leg be glass and you could see through it seeing gears. I think that would be an interesting thing to do. I also went with an ex stream angle. But once again it's the opposite way. I still like it and can't wait to see the finish product.

Oh great I can see it in the last update line art. I was affraid at first of a robocop like design. But now I only wait for colors !Good job.

I've abandoned the colour version... I think I will render the tone with a pencil to give a nice gritty texture more in keeping with steampunk. So here goes.

Nice work! I think that the color version would look quite nice once you render the tones and variations in color -- the legs esp. were coming along well. But your pencil rendering is well done, so if you prefer to go that route, I'm sure it will look great as well. :)

Thanks Jono :beer: - for the metals I did a search on Flickr for some brass pics. Keep a few handy to refer to when you are rendering the metal bits. I also did a search for steam power which turned up a whole lot of cool Victorian machinery.

So here is the full image taking shape. Its a pencil and ink drawing, supposedly to get a gritty steampunk texture, which I will manipulate in photoshop later.
I'm starting to wonder why I abandoned the colour version?!

Nearly finished the tonal work, I think the grittiness is working nicely so I'm happy with that, its just taken far longer than I thought it would... looking forward to dropping in the colour and adding swirling steam.

This is roughly how I see the background lights and darks, probably with a whole lot of steam added.

This is really good.. I like the shot you've chosen.. when a character is falling, it's always hard for me to decide wether or not to have the viewer look towards the ground or up to the sky. I like the dynamic pose too. best of luck :)

Aw ... now I wish I had gone with my original idea for this contest (I'm doing Icarus too...). You're definitely a lot further along than I am, and I'm liking what I see! The ornate little touches are great.

This is the completed drawing which I have scanned into photoshop. Pushing and pulling the lights and darks and picking up on some highlights... I've begun to add some steam in too so we'll see where that goes...

Bandro - thanks for the advice - I'm thinking of adding a name plate with the word 'Daedalus', which should liven that area up a bit. Also the furnace in the chest will be reddish orange and radiating light which should help. :wip:

Well I hope u dont take out 2 much of the charcoal cuz it does provide good texture in places like the foot, shin, the large wing on the right as well as inside the body (the little exposed connections). However, that could just be due to me liking textured surfaces, but do what u do best and amaze us. Just keep up the awesomely good work

Still a whole lot 'm not happy with, but I've added a metallic Daedelus name plate and some other details. Overall the colour is not working for me yet.

Daedelus stares up in horror as Icarus comes tumbling down, preceded by bits of his wings.

I started this off as a quick photoshop sketch, then traced it ono a piece of paper and worked into the paper with pen and ink. It gives a gritty quality which I think is quite interesting for a Victorian era Steampunk image. Thereafter I added colour and other effects. Enjoy.

I'm not really that satisfied with the saturation, and the lights and darks of some of the elements but since I've finally uploaded a final image, I dont think I can bring myself to dabble any more... it might possibly drive me insane putting another layer of highlights on :p

I wanted to create a dynamic composition that told a story at first glance, but from an unusual perspective and cropping into the figure so as not to show it in its entirety.

This started as a quick photoshop sketch. I then traced it onto a piece of paper and worked into it with pencil and ink to give it a gritty appearance. Thereafter I added colour and effects in Photoshop. Enjoy.
