Latest Update: Final Image: Daedelus & Icarus (

11 November 2008, 07:18 AM
For this one, I'm thinking along the lines of the mythical story of Daedalus and his son Icarus who flew too close to the sun with his wax wings. Maybe I should choose something more obscure...

11 November 2008, 10:01 AM (

Here we have Icarus flying too close to a massive sun / furnace; the bolts holding the metal feathers to of his wings have melted and the feathers are dropping off and showering his father down below.

11 November 2008, 07:50 AM (

So here I've attacked the marker sketch in Photoshop - I'm thinking brass for his Daedalus's hands and forearms and feet and calves, quite human like but obviously carved from brass and articulated. A shiny brass name plate on his stomach written in an old style script. He's supposed to be looking up in anguish as bits and pieces of Icarus's wings come raining down. The wings need a lot of work...not sure whats going on there yet.

11 November 2008, 01:47 PM (

I've been adding more detail and adjusting the position of elements.

The first of the metal feathers that have dropped off Icarus has appeared. I might add a filigree pattern to the nearest feathers in the final image.

11 November 2008, 01:57 PM
Great perspective.
I like it and will follow your progress :)

11 November 2008, 01:57 PM
wow. this looks really cool. I almost did this story too. I really like the perspective/viewpoint you have going on right now.

11 November 2008, 06:31 PM
thats really a cool idea to start with, have fun.......

11 November 2008, 07:21 PM
I thought about this one too but didīt know how to portray it.
This looks really excellent, keep it up.

11 November 2008, 07:36 PM
Deracus, BrittanyRichardson, gurucgsharma, mr_carl: Thanks guys!

I almost didn't do this concept as its a very famous myth, but so far it seems to be working for me...

11 November 2008, 07:41 PM (

I'm now going to print this out, reach for my pencil and draw some linework. Hopefully I wont stiffen up and kill it ;)

11 November 2008, 08:00 PM
Hey Rupert,

Great idea for the challenge, the POV of the sketch and the sketch itself are nicely done. Have fun with this and good luck.

11 November 2008, 08:08 PM
I especially love th POV you are aiming for. Lovely pencil work too! :)

11 November 2008, 08:13 PM
This is one of my favorite entries so far.

The one thing I'm not clear on with it though: Is icarus a robot? and daedalus a robot? or is one a robot and one a human? or are they both people in mechanical suits?

11 November 2008, 11:06 PM
i love the angle of this image, it immediately grabs your interest. love the look of your sketch.
Good luck.

11 November 2008, 02:03 AM
Nice start Rupert!

11 November 2008, 02:44 AM
Wow, what a stunning piece!

11 November 2008, 04:18 AM
Hi there,
Very nice art work dude.

11 November 2008, 05:56 AM
looks pretty cool! I'll keep watching over this entry... great work man!

11 November 2008, 06:10 AM
Your very productive Rupert. Great start, and good to see you again.

11 November 2008, 06:12 AM
Very nice!

As others have said before, the POV is awesome! Your line work is well done too.

Just one little thing. Define the shoulder joints a little more, to give the perception of full range of motion. Right now it seams "forced" to work.

Other than that, everything else is looking good!

11 November 2008, 07:12 AM

seen another Icarus in the challenge, but yours looks awesome, like other said, i love the POV and the design looks already really nice. Keep the good work!!

Cheers,

11 November 2008, 03:49 PM
Howzit Rupert, that's a really striking image and I really love the way it fits squarely into the theme of the challenge. The Icarus story really lends itself to steampunkification. If I had to give one small crit, it would be that the armour in your latest image is perhaps a little too futuristic looking, and could be more Victorianised, but ultimately that's your creative choice.

11 November 2008, 04:49 AM
mmoir: Thanks dude, the sketch was one of those that seemed to paint itself so I'm lucky with this one ;)

andrewpyott: Thanks alot, I'm busy with the realworld pencil linework at the moment.

Legacy40k: Thanks dude - you are right what's going on here? I think they are two steam powered humanoid robots, built by human hands and having human intelligence. The hands, feet and heads will be the most human like in appearance, I'm thinking shiny bronze or gold for these parts.

Jeroth, blackheart, SideAche, SheenaJ, SONIC-X, blackberryf1: Thanks guys for stopping by & the kind words.

sasquatch70: Hey Brad nice to see you again - looking forward to some great work from you! So you can see I'm between projects? ;)

skekTek: Thanks dude. Yes the shoulder area has been and still is a problem that I have not fully resolved yet. I wanted to keep the robot looking quite clunky as its from the Victorian era, but the arms still have to look like they are not just stuck on.

SuperXCM: Thanks dude

leigh: Howzit Leigh - its a lovely day in Cape Town  Thanks for the advice I will definitely take it on board. I'm working on a linework pencil sketch at the moment in which I'm bringing in Victorian elements, such as a lions head below the knee joint of the foremost leg. I've also got some steam train reference shots handy which will keep me from heading off into the far future (hopefully).

11 November 2008, 11:04 PM
stunning angle and a nice and clean concept :wip:
i love the flow of the pose, too.

11 November 2008, 11:15 PM
Great point of view and the viewer is in the "action". Interresting way to show the fall of Icarus, the fact is your illustration answer well the 2 needs in this contest : Instant regognisable Myth / Steampunk Aesthetism.
After around my personnal taste, I would personnaly treat Icarus as a midway between robot & Human , to keep the famous "human error". not 100% robotic as a flying robocop ... Keep good job

11 November 2008, 12:26 AM
That looks awesome. I love the way you've done the wing mechanism.

11 November 2008, 01:42 AM
Powerful painting you have here, Rupert

11 November 2008, 08:27 PM
Very dynamic sketch! Subscribing ...

11 November 2008, 02:13 PM (

Here I'm working on the linework using an HB pencil. I've brought in some Victorian details such as the lion heads and filigree. Busy fiddling around with internal mechanics trying to make it look believable...

11 November 2008, 02:26 PM
mccg: thanks dude

DeeVad: thanks and yes this guy is not going to be a smooth looking super robot, I want to make him look like he's been cobbled together in some mad Victorians' underground lab.

ESRB - Welcome Cape Town guy. Thanks a lot, still a lot of fiddling around with the mechanism happening!

MartinNielsen - Thanks Martin you rock!

RicoD - Thanks for stopping by

11 November 2008, 02:59 PM (

This shows the technique a bit better - I used a lightbox to trace the photoshop painting onto paper and refine.

11 November 2008, 03:52 PM
absolutely amazing Rupert!! :bounce: the mechanical details really paid off!
i look forward to your next update! :D very interesting indeed!

11 November 2008, 02:33 PM
Really cool perspective!
It's going to be great ;)

11 November 2008, 02:56 AM
This is a lot like my concept, cept Icarus is still in the air. It would be right before the mechanical wings break. I really like the way this is turning out. It's cool how we both decided this story. One thing I would like to see is part of the leg be glass and you could see through it seeing gears. I think that would be an interesting thing to do. I also went with an ex stream angle. But once again it's the opposite way. I still like it and can't wait to see the finish product.

11 November 2008, 03:01 AM
DeeVad: thanks and yes this guy is not going to be a smooth looking super robot, I want to make him look like he's been cobbled together in some mad Victorians' underground lab.

Oh great I can see it in the last update line art. I was affraid at first of a robocop like design. But now I only wait for colors !Good job.

11 November 2008, 03:19 AM
Very nice drawing and composition. Took a quick look at your other work and I'm certain the color will be VERY nice!

11 November 2008, 03:49 AM
Looking nice mate....I really like your angle and the qualities of your linework! Keep it up!

11 November 2008, 05:11 AM
cool perspective, I like the ornaments

11 November 2008, 01:14 PM (

I've finished the linework, next up the colour flats...

11 November 2008, 01:36 PM
nwiz25: Hey Neville, thanks for stopping by  , phhew, been working feverishly here on the mechanical bits. I've brought some lessons over from the last challenge though - I must have some areas of calm space heh heh :wip:

Multiductus: Thanks dude, I hope so... :surprised

tythecooldude06: Thanks, I think the really nice part of this challenge is seeing how different people interpret the same idea - so I hope there are more artists out there doing this mythical tale! Part glass leg, I'll see if it works...

DeeVad: Had to struggle a bit to get rid of robocop but hopefully this has done the trick...

JeffDurham: Thanks a lot although I have been called colour blind before heh heh

balfs21: Thanks mate, I've gone back to pencil and paper ;)

bandro: Thanks - I tend to like drawing intricate things and I usually end up with way too much in the pic. :banghead: Hopefully I can calm myself down this time...

11 November 2008, 02:52 PM
You have unbelievable sense for detail. :) I like those lion heads.

11 November 2008, 11:18 AM (

Here I've laid down blocks of colour so I can select areas easily...

11 November 2008, 11:23 AM (

Heres my first shot at colour and tone, it needs a lot of work...and I'm not sure whether red is the colour. Maybe something grittier...

11 November 2008, 11:29 AM
Dreamtec: Thanks for stopping by - as I now have to render everything to look metallic, those lion heads may come back and bite me... :argh:

11 November 2008, 03:10 PM (

Working into the leg a bit here - I'm struggling to lock down the main light source; thinking of having a secondary orange light source below...

11 November 2008, 03:38 PM (

I've abandoned the colour version... I think I will render the tone with a pencil to give a nice gritty texture more in keeping with steampunk. So here goes.

11 November 2008, 03:42 PM
hi ,
i am new user to this forum ..
very nice work ..!

i will also upload some of my work soon..i am now creating a list and trying to finalize it ..!

great work !

warm regards ( (

11 November 2008, 04:16 PM
I really like the angle etc, so dramatic! The details is also really cool, i love to see lots of gears and springs etc

11 November 2008, 04:43 PM
Love the angle, just from the preliminary sketches i can get a great feel for the action that will be present in the final image. Great layout and composition, keep it up
My steampunk myth submission (

11 November 2008, 04:47 PM
Nice work! I think that the color version would look quite nice once you render the tones and variations in color -- the legs esp. were coming along well. But your pencil rendering is well done, so if you prefer to go that route, I'm sure it will look great as well. :)

11 November 2008, 05:41 PM
Great angle!... and I love Icarus...

11 November 2008, 06:32 PM
OMG..... This is really HUGE:buttrock: ( :buttrock: ...... can't wait to see final result:wip:

All the best....;)

11 November 2008, 06:53 PM
Good theme for the challenge! :)
Looking forward to you next steps.

11 November 2008, 06:49 AM
cyberdodo: Welcome to the forums and thanks for the kind words - looking forward to seeing your stuff. :wip:

xtremepenguin: Thanks alot - I tried to make the pose something different, not the usual horizontal format as seen from eye level.

Rivenis: Thanks a lot

M31: Thanks, I could have carried on with the colour version, but I think I wanted to try something new - we'll see what happens... :arteest:

Joana: Many thanks

sylvexsan: Hey dude thanks a lot, you rock

ChrisNoeth: Hey Chris thanks for the support! :)

11 November 2008, 02:38 PM (

A little more rendering...

11 November 2008, 02:55 PM
I really like the dramatic angle, cant wait to see how you do your metals as I'm a little stuck on that for my piece.

11 November 2008, 06:31 AM
Thanks Jono  - for the metals I did a search on Flickr for some brass pics. Keep a few handy to refer to when you are rendering the metal bits. I also did a search for steam power which turned up a whole lot of cool Victorian machinery.

12 December 2008, 03:51 PM
hey rupert. thanks for your comment.
Your post is looking very nice from day one. love the motion of all. Good luck !

12 December 2008, 04:27 PM
Unique work Man! The pose and the camera angle produce a VERY dynamic event altogether.

Good Luck!

12 December 2008, 06:16 PM
It looks fine by me - no crits yet :)

12 December 2008, 08:51 PM
Good concept and sketches Rupert! The perspective is amazing.

12 December 2008, 07:37 AM (

So here is the full image taking shape. Its a pencil and ink drawing, supposedly to get a gritty steampunk texture, which I will manipulate in photoshop later.
I'm starting to wonder why I abandoned the colour version?!

12 December 2008, 07:43 AM
chilombiano, mrpeace, MartinNielsen, decosouza - Hey guys thanks for encouragement - much appreciated. Hoping to be done with this phase soon  and go on to the colour :wip: .

12 December 2008, 05:45 PM
good idea! Icarus and Dedal! excellent picture! successes!

12 December 2008, 07:49 AM (

Nearly finished the tonal work, I think the grittiness is working nicely so I'm happy with that, its just taken far longer than I thought it would... looking forward to dropping in the colour and adding swirling steam.

12 December 2008, 07:53 AM
LexLe: Thanks for dropping by and the kind words - looking forward to putting this baby to bed now

12 December 2008, 09:22 AM (

This is roughly how I see the background lights and darks, probably with a whole lot of steam added.

12 December 2008, 01:06 AM
Hey thanks for the kind comments :)

This is really good.. I like the shot you've chosen.. when a character is falling, it's always hard for me to decide wether or not to have the viewer look towards the ground or up to the sky. I like the dynamic pose too. best of luck :)

12 December 2008, 05:46 AM
Cool sketch my friend, maybe the chest could have some more ornaments like the leg has, in order to be more interesting

12 December 2008, 10:48 PM
Aw ... now I wish I had gone with my original idea for this contest (I'm doing Icarus too...). You're definitely a lot further along than I am, and I'm liking what I see! The ornate little touches are great.

Good luck!

12 December 2008, 08:00 AM (

This is the completed drawing which I have scanned into photoshop. Pushing and pulling the lights and darks and picking up on some highlights... I've begun to add some steam in too so we'll see where that goes...

12 December 2008, 08:09 AM
Coldrum - thanks for stopping by and the kind words, hoping to get to the colour one day

Bandro - thanks for the advice - I'm thinking of adding a name plate with the word 'Daedalus', which should liven that area up a bit. Also the furnace in the chest will be reddish orange and radiating light which should help. :wip:

BrettJubinville - thanks a lot, I think the more the merrier! Its always interesting to see somebody else's take on the same subject. Good luck and

12 December 2008, 12:53 PM (

Finally dropped the colour in... beginning to render each part starting with the knee and leg.

12 December 2008, 04:32 PM
great concept love the angle.

12 December 2008, 06:35 PM
Hey Rupert, great design, really liking the dynamics of this piece. The colours really have set a wonderful tone for this concept. Anxious 4 some more detail. All the best

12 December 2008, 11:09 PM
Great composition and action! Nice detail! Is it a view upwards or a view downwards?

12 December 2008, 11:37 PM
sweet shot Rupert, dig the little ornaments

12 December 2008, 04:34 AM
love the colors bro!! :bounce:  make sure to shine/glare em up a bit .. this is gonna be kick ass! :buttrock: GO! go! Go!

12 December 2008, 10:30 AM
omoro: Thanks a lot, I thought an unusual angle and quite a graphic cropping treatment would add interest.

kdot: Thanks for your good wishes, still umming and aahing about what colours go where, I think the dark charcoal has got to go though!

Minnhagen: Thanks for stopping by & your kind words; it should be read as the viewer looking up at Daedelus and right at the top is Icarus getting scorched... The bits of wing are falling down ;)

jpedro: Thanks dude I think you know why the other wing is in silhouette - too lazy to draw another lion's head heh heh

nwiz25: Hey Neville thanks man! Good advice - I'm working on a colour dodge layer at the top that I will be turning way up to make everything super shiny! :arteest:

And with that I'm going on holiday - back on 6th Jan, hope to finish in time...

12 December 2008, 12:39 PM
Well I hope u dont take out 2 much of the charcoal cuz it does provide good texture in places like the foot, shin, the large wing on the right as well as inside the body (the little exposed connections). However, that could just be due to me liking textured surfaces, but do what u do best and amaze us. Just keep up the awesomely good work

12 December 2008, 01:43 PM (

Couldn't resist just fiddling around here a bit...

12 December 2008, 12:02 AM
Ah! The colors man! Looking good :)

01 January 2009, 07:10 AM (

Still a whole lot 'm not happy with, but I've added a metallic Daedelus name plate and some other details. Overall the colour is not working for me yet.

01 January 2009, 08:14 AM
Kdot: Thanks dude, back in the office from today and hoping to finish on time... :wip:

MartinNielsen: Thanks for the encouragement, it helps alot

01 January 2009, 08:54 AM (

Not sure whats happening in the background or if the colours work...

01 January 2009, 02:34 PM (

Toned down background...

01 January 2009, 06:11 PM (

Software: Photoshop

Daedelus stares up in horror as Icarus comes tumbling down, preceded by bits of his wings.

I started this off as a quick photoshop sketch, then traced it ono a piece of paper and worked into the paper with pen and ink. It gives a gritty quality which I think is quite interesting for a Victorian era Steampunk image. Thereafter I added colour and other effects. Enjoy.

01 January 2009, 07:43 PM (

Still trying to upload the final hi res image...

01 January 2009, 08:08 PM
wow. man that IS Steampunk :) I love the ornaments and pose of the character great job

01 January 2009, 08:09 PM
I think you're home :) Good choice making the background so simple.

01 January 2009, 07:29 AM
Yikes I managed to upload my final image - that took me by surprise...

MartinNielsen: as always thanks for stopping by and the support!

celiksert: Thanks a lot dude.

I'm not really that satisfied with the saturation, and the lights and darks of some of the elements but since I've finally uploaded a final image, I dont think I can bring myself to dabble any more... it might possibly drive me insane putting another layer of highlights on :p

01 January 2009, 04:27 PM
Oops this is a big grey square so scroll down to the next post

01 January 2009, 07:31 AM (

Software: Photoshop

Finally the final image: Daedalus stares up in horror as Icarus comes tumbling down, preceded by pieces of his wings.

I wanted to create a dynamic composition that told a story at first glance, but from an unusual perspective and cropping into the figure so as not to show it in its entirety.

This started as a quick photoshop sketch. I then traced it onto a piece of paper and worked into it with pencil and ink to give it a gritty appearance. Thereafter I added colour and effects in Photoshop. Enjoy.
