So many myths, so little time. I already some visual imagery in mind that I'd like to flesh out, but I still need to find an appropriate story for it. Thinking along the lines of something transportation related, like a curiously futuristic train or great ocean going paddle wheel steam liner, but what legendary characters to include? Back to the research I guess.

Some ideas, but none that really strike my fancy yet:
A steampunk dragon man, Yu the Great toiling to make canals.
Better yet, two Gnodsbyin, demons armed with bows and arrows. Shown are one or two of the Phu'i gzhi bdag mdzod lnga, clad upon their steampunk steeds of a loin, elephant, horse, dragon or garuda, and clad with the treasures of their individual mountain.
A steampunk sphinx “the strangler”. Face of a woman, body of a lion and wings of a bird. Perhaps a manned vehicle impersonating a god.
Steampunk Medusa, a gear-driven robot which uses crystals and light stemming from the snakes on her head to turn others to stone.
The Fir Bholg (steampunk enhanced creatures of course) using extremely advanced mechanical means to construct the drystone walls of Dun Aonghusa.
Cú Chulainn locked in epic battle with Fer Diadh using his steampunk weapon, the gae bolga. Both are fitted with mechanically enhanced shields and armor.
Hmmm.... decisions decisions...

I finally decided which myth/legend to punk. I'll be doing an honest to goodness legend from Victorian era England, Spring Heeled Jack.
Preliminary idea is to have him with mask, fire breathing apparatus, lamp, clawed gloves, complex spring powered boots, etc... assaulting a horse drawn mail carriage in a dark corner of London.
I'm excited, but I'm still in the research stage. Who'd have thought it was so tough finding photo reference of Victorian London architecture online? Still coming up with the costume ideas too, and trolling through every last steampunk reference I can find.
Well, here's a quick preliminary sketch.
I've already changed my mind on the angle and configuration of the street in the shot. Basically I'll have Jack leaping out while the carriage swerves, all viewed from behind with Jack silhouetted in the lamp light.

Very simple concept sketch for Spring Heeled Jack's mask.

This is the beginning of two of the buildings to be used for the street.
Jack will leap out from perhaps a balcony or over a street lamp.
